All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Optic neuritis: ON) is frequently a first sign of multiple sclerosis: MS), which is an inflammatory demyelinative disease of the central nerve system: CNS), including brain, optic nerve, and spinal cord. Investigating ON provides an approach to improve MS diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis: EAE) is a widely used animal model of MS and exhibits pathologies similar to the human disease. Magnetic resonance imaging: MRI) is a non-invasive tool to detect disease progress and as a standard diagnose procedure for MS in the clinic. In biological samples, the hydrogen nuclei are used to produce the MR signal due …

Non-Potential Fields In The Quiet Sun Network: Extreme-Ultraviolet And Magnetic Footpoint Observations, David L. Chesney, Hakeem M. Oluseyi, Norton B. Orange

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

The quiet Sun (QS) magnetic network is known to contain dynamics which are indicative of non-potential fields. Non-potential magnetic fields forming “S-shaped” loop arcades can lead to the breakdown of static activity and have only been observed in high temperature X-ray coronal structures—some of which show eruptive behavior. Thus, analysis of this type of atmospheric structuring has been restricted to large-scale coronal fields. Here we provide the first identification of non-potential loop arcades exclusive to the QS supergranulation network. High-resolution Atmospheric Imaging Assembly data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory have allowed for the first observations of fine-scale “S-shaped” loop arcades …

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt Nov 2013

Acoustic Droplet Vaporization In Biology And Medicine, Chung-Yin Lin, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the literature regarding the use of acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) in clinical applications of imaging, embolic therapy, and therapeutic delivery. ADV is a physical process in which the pressure waves of ultrasound induce a phase transition that causes superheated liquid nanodroplets to form gas bubbles. The bubbles provide ultrasonic imaging contrast and other functions. ADV of perfluoropentane was used extensively in imaging for preclinical trials in the 1990s, but its use declined rapidly with the advent of other imaging agents. In the last decade, ADV was proposed and explored for embolic occlusion therapy, drug delivery, aberration correction, …

The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01 × 1020 protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205 ± 17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and …

Hybrid Differential Optical Sensing Imager, Nabeel Riza, Hassan Foroosh Nov 2013

Hybrid Differential Optical Sensing Imager, Nabeel Riza, Hassan Foroosh

UCF Patents

Methods and systems for a differential compressed sensor optical design is proposed to form a smart optical imager. Specifically, the novel design uses both active (laser) and passive (ambient light) to intelligently sample the direct image information within a Three Dimensional (3-D) spatial frame with potential to 4-D (3-D space plus 1-D time) sampling. An electronically agile lens-based distance sensor is engaged that can produce smart sampling of target by adjusting the size of the laser beam spot on the target sampling grid to produce a boundary outline by a light flooding method. This target dependent direct sampling of the …

Bad Cycles, Blowup Points, And Baby Mandelbrot Sets, Jared Timothy Collins Nov 2013

Bad Cycles, Blowup Points, And Baby Mandelbrot Sets, Jared Timothy Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation focuses on two problems in complex dynamics. The first relates to Newton's method, while the second is a study of the particular dynamical properties of a one-parameter family of rational maps. Newton's method is one of the most commonly used algorithms to find the roots of a polynomial. For a fixed polynomial the roots of the polynomial are the attracting fixed points for the Newton map. It follows that for each root there is an open set of points in the complex plane which will converge to the root under iteration of the Newton map. Unfortunately, for some …

(Re)Discovering Retrospective Miscue Analysis: An Action Research Exploration Using Recorded Readings To Improve Third-Grade Students’ Reading Fluency, Melissa Born, Reagan Curtis

i.e.: inquiry in education

An action research project was undertaken focused on integrating recorded readings and Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) into center-based instructional time in a third-grade classroom. Initial DIBELS test results were used to select 6 struggling readers, all of whom showed improved fluency in response to our instructional interventions. The impact of these instructional approaches on the teacher and her students is discussed, as is the impact on the teacher of engaging in action research. The article concludes with practical ways to implement recorded readings and RMA into classrooms in order to boost student motivation, attitudes toward reading, reading fluency, and comprehension.

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Within Action Research: Promise And Possibilities, Thomas G. Ryan Nov 2013

The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning Within Action Research: Promise And Possibilities, Thomas G. Ryan

i.e.: inquiry in education

Herein the idea that Action Research (A.R.) and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) are very much related is explored. For instance, educational action research demands a series of commitments; it is a journey of self, through reflective inquiry, that is social. We do it to improve our teaching and self. We desire to improve praxes (practices) and understanding within the contexts in which these understandings are implemented. The action can be described as a quest to improve just as the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) can be viewed as a systematic, even recursive effort to illuminate, improve …

Quantitative Analysis Of Neurotransmitter Pathways Under Steady State Conditions - A Perspective, Arthur J L Cooper Nov 2013

Quantitative Analysis Of Neurotransmitter Pathways Under Steady State Conditions - A Perspective, Arthur J L Cooper

NYMC Faculty Publications

In a contribution to this Research Topic Erkki Somersalo and Daniela Calvetti carried out a mathematical analysis of neurotransmitter pathways in brain, modeling compartmental nitrogen flux among several major participants - ammonia, glutamine, glutamate, GABA, and selected amino acids. This analysis is important because cerebral nitrogen metabolism is perturbed in many diseases, including liver disease and inborn errors of the urea cycle. These diseases result in an elevation of blood ammonia, which is neurotoxic. Here, a brief description is provided of the discovery of cerebral metabolic compartmentation of nitrogen metabolism - a key feature of cerebral glutamate-glutamine and GABA-glutamine cycles. …

Collision Cross Section Measurements In A Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer, Daniel E. Austin, Dr. David Dearden

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I explored the possibility of using spectral linewidths in a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FTICR-MS) to measure ion collision cross sections. A measurement of an ion’s collision cross section would provide important information about its conformation, or the spatial arrangement of the atoms and functional groups that make up the ion.

The Surface Charging Behavior Of The Gibbsite (001) Surface: An Evaluation Of The Music Model, T. J. Campbell, Dr. Barry Bickmore

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The struggle to find and maintain sources of clean water faces billions of people throughout the world. Increases in groundwater contamination have made this problem even more severe. It is therefore of great importance to understand how contaminants travel and interact in the subsurface. Chemical reactions with the surrounding rock often control the movement of these contaminants. Mineral surfaces can become charged, attracting oppositely charged contaminant particles and slowing their progress. This surface charging is dependent on the reactivity of the individual functional groups on mineral surfaces. Reliable predictions of the reactivity of these groups are necessary to improve the …

Cad Tools For Thermal Growth Research, C. Porter Bassett, Dr. C. Greg Jensen Nov 2013

Cad Tools For Thermal Growth Research, C. Porter Bassett, Dr. C. Greg Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For my project I developed two tools to aid in manufacturing research that is currently being conducted in the Mechanical Engineering Department. This research is about milling, a type of manufacturing where metal is machined bye a spinning cutting tool, very similar to a drill bit, that cuts away the metal. This process generates a lot of heat and causes the cutting tool to heat up. When it heats up, it also expands and changes shape. The change in size of the cutting tool effects how much metal it removes. In precision work, this change in shape can be enough …

Finite Size Effects In Isolated Systems Of Hard Spheres, Scott Burt, Dr. Randy Shirts Nov 2013

Finite Size Effects In Isolated Systems Of Hard Spheres, Scott Burt, Dr. Randy Shirts

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Chemical modeling is an increasingly important tool in modern research. Despite vast improvements in computational speed, most systems of interest are so complex that simulations must be carried out on very small model systems. However, such simplified systems often contain constraints that do not apply to the larger system. This causes the simulation results to deviate significantly from the true behavior of the corresponding macroscopic system. Such deviations are known as finite size effects. Understanding these effects are important for correctly extrapolating simulation results to the macroscopic system of interest. Chemical simulations are often performed under conditions of constant total …

Gender Differences In Byu Communications Students’ Career Attitudes, Alexis Allen, Dr. Shane Reese Nov 2013

Gender Differences In Byu Communications Students’ Career Attitudes, Alexis Allen, Dr. Shane Reese

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Women have made vast advancements in the workplace within the last thirty years, but gender career issues still exist today. The field of communications presents an interesting case study about discrepancies between male and female employees’ contrasting earnings and career roles. A phenomenon called the Glass Ceiling Effect exists in the public relations field, for example. Essentially, the Glass Ceiling Effect says that although there are more women practitioners in the field, male practitioners attain management positions more frequently and earn higher salaries than their female counterparts.

We present the results of a directed search for continuous gravitational waves from unknown, isolated neutron stars in the Galactic center region, performed on two years of data from LIGO's fifth science run from two LIGO detectors. The search uses a semicoherent approach, analyzing coherently 630 segments, each spanning 11.5 hours, and then incoherently combining the results of the single segments. It covers gravitational wave frequencies in a range from 78 to 496 Hz and a frequency-dependent range of first-order spindown values down to -7.86×10-8 Hz/s at the highest frequency. No gravitational waves were detected. The 90% confidence upper limits …

Skills Needs Of The Ict Sector In Tanzania, Deirdre Lillis, Fredrick Mtenzi, Diana Mauricaite, Said Jafari, Peter Manifold

Reports

Information and Communication Technology will play a critical role in sustaining the high growth rates experienced by African economies in the last decade. Investment in the ICT sector enables the creation of high quality jobs and acts as an enabling technology for other key industries such as agriculture, mining, finance, health and education. ‘New Software Economy’ models mean international location and company scale are less relevant and enable small organisations to compete globally in niche markets. Unlike many traditional industries which have heavy infrastructure requirements, the key resource of the ICT Sector is its people and the knowledge, skills and …
