Kinetic Fractionation Of Gases By Deep Air Convection In Polar Firn, K. Kawamura, J. P. Severinghaus, M. R. Albert, Z. R. Courville Nov 2013

Kinetic Fractionation Of Gases By Deep Air Convection In Polar Firn, K. Kawamura, J. P. Severinghaus, M. R. Albert, Z. R. Courville

Dartmouth Scholarship

A previously unrecognized type of gas fractiona- tion occurs in firn air columns subjected to intense convec- tion. It is a form of kinetic fractionation that depends on the fact that different gases have different molecular diffusivi- ties. Convective mixing continually disturbs diffusive equi- librium, and gases diffuse back toward diffusive equilibrium under the influence of gravity and thermal gradients. In near- surface firn where convection and diffusion compete as gas transport mechanisms, slow-diffusing gases such as krypton (Kr) and xenon (Xe) are more heavily impacted by convec- tion than fast diffusing gases such as nitrogen (N2) and ar- gon …

Hamiltonian Cycles Through A Given Edge Of More Than 1-Tough Chordal Planar Graphs, John Estes Nov 2013

Hamiltonian Cycles Through A Given Edge Of More Than 1-Tough Chordal Planar Graphs, John Estes

Combinatorics Seminar

A graph is said to be planar if G may be con gured in the plane without edge crossings and is chordal if G has no induced cycles of size greater than 3. A graph G is hamiltonian if there is a cycle that passes through all vertices of G, a hamiltonian cycle. In 1999, Bohme et al. showed the every chordal planar graph with toughness exceeding 1 is hamiltonian. The generalized tree, the k-tree is de ned recursively as follows: (i) The smallest k-tree is the k-clique Kk. (ii) For n k, if Tk n is a k-tree with …

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide) Microgel-Based Etalons And Etalon Arrays For Determining The Molecular Weight Of Polymers In Solution, Molla R. Islam, Michael J. Serpe Nov 2013

Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide) Microgel-Based Etalons And Etalon Arrays For Determining The Molecular Weight Of Polymers In Solution, Molla R. Islam, Michael J. Serpe

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Positively and/or negatively charged poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)-based microgels were deposited on a single substrate and isolated regions of Au overlayers were deposited on top of the microgels. Each spatially isolated Au overlayer region had a different thickness to make an etalon array. We found that areas with a thin Au overlayer (5 nm) responded to a range of polymer molecular weights (MW), while areas with a thick overlayer (35 nm) can only respond to low molecular weight polyelectrolytes. By comparing the optical responses of the device’s individual array elements, a good approximation of the polyelectrolyteMWin solution can be made.

Directed Ratchet Transport In Granular Crystals, Vincent Berardi, J. Lydon, P. G. Kevrekidis, C. Daraio, R. Carretero-González

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Directed-ratchet transport (DRT) in a one-dimensional lattice of spherical beads, which serves as a prototype for granular chains, is investigated. We consider a system where the trajectory of the central bead is prescribed by a biharmonic forcing function with broken time-reversal symmetry. By comparing the mean integrated force of beads equidistant from the forcing bead, two distinct types of directed transport can be observed—spatial and temporal DRT. Based on the value of the frequency of the forcing function relative to the cutoff frequency, the system can be categorized by the presence and magnitude of each type of DRT. Furthermore, we …

Standing In The Gap: Research That Informs Strategies For Motivating And Retaining Rural High School Students, Patricia L. Hardré Nov 2013

Standing In The Gap: Research That Informs Strategies For Motivating And Retaining Rural High School Students, Patricia L. Hardré

The Rural Educator

Rural schools face the challenges of motivating and retaining students, often in the face of severe resource constraints. This paper synthesizes fifteen years of the author’s rural research on secondary students’ school-related motivation, distilling it into strategic principles for rural teachers and administrators. Effective motivational knowledge and strategies supported by both theory and research can help school staff fill the gap between potential and actual student achievement. Multi-level strategies for motivating individuals and groups include elements of classroom instructional practice, interpersonal relationships, and the broader school motivational climate including policy. By motivating students effectively, teachers and administrators can bridge the …

Common Challenges Faced By Rural Principals: A Review Of The Literature, Jane P. Preston, Brittany A. E. Jakubiec, Robin Kooymans Nov 2013

Common Challenges Faced By Rural Principals: A Review Of The Literature, Jane P. Preston, Brittany A. E. Jakubiec, Robin Kooymans

The Rural Educator

Within this article, we thematically present common challenges associated with the role of the rural principal. In this literature review, we delimit our search to work published from 2003–2013. A limitation of this study is that it represents data predominantly from American, Canadian, and Australian rural settings, restricting a global applicability of results. Findings highlight that many rural principal candidates face a hiring disadvantage if they do not have a historical connection with the community advertising a position. Additional challenges include juggling diverse responsibilities, lack of professional development and resources, gender discrimination, and issues surrounding school accountability and change. This …

Unintended Consequences Of Cigarette Taxation And Regulation, Angela Hawken, Jonathan D. Kulick, James Prieger Nov 2013

Unintended Consequences Of Cigarette Taxation And Regulation, Angela Hawken, Jonathan D. Kulick, James Prieger

School of Public Policy Working Papers

Tobacco smoking harms health. Taxes and regulations can reduce that harm. But evasion reduces the efficacy of taxes and regulations and creates harms of its own in the form of illicit markets. Enforcement can reduce evasion but creates additional harms, including incarceration and violence. Peter Reu-ter has pointed out that a flat ban on cigarettes would be likely to generate illicit-market harms similar to the harms of existing illicit drug markets. Taxes and regulations can be thought of as “lesser prohibitions,” subject to the same sorts of risks. Minimizing total harm means minimizing the sum of abuse harms and control …

Evidence For Finely-Regulated Asynchronous Growth Of Toxoplasma Gondii Cysts Based On Data-Driven Model Selection, Adam M. Sullivan, Xiaopeng Zhao, Yasuhiro Suzuki, Eri Ochiai, Stephen Crutcher, Michael A. Gilchrist

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Toxoplasma gondii establishes a chronic infection by forming cysts preferentially in the brain. This chronic infection is one of the most common parasitic infections in humans and can be reactivated to develop life-threatening toxoplasmic encephalitis in immunocompromised patients. Host-pathogen interactions during the chronic infection include growth of the cysts and their removal by both natural rupture and elimination by the immune system. Analyzing these interactions is important for understanding the pathogenesis of this common infection. We developed a differential equation framework of cyst growth and employed Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) to determine the growth and removal functions that best describe …

Analysis Of Sry Duplications On The Rattus Norvegicus Y-Chromosome, Jeremy W. Prokop, Adam C. Underwood, Monte E. Turner, Nic Miller, Dawn Pietzrak, Sarah Scott, Chris Smith, Amy Milsted Nov 2013

Analysis Of Sry Duplications On The Rattus Norvegicus Y-Chromosome, Jeremy W. Prokop, Adam C. Underwood, Monte E. Turner, Nic Miller, Dawn Pietzrak, Sarah Scott, Chris Smith, Amy Milsted

Biology Faculty Research

Background: Gene copy number variation plays a large role in the evolution of genomes. In Rattus norvegicus and other rodent species, the Y-chromosome has accumulated multiple copies of Sry loci. These copy number variations have been previously linked with changes in phenotype of animal models such as the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). This study characterizes the Y-chromosome in the Sry region of Rattus norvegicus, while addressing functional variations seen in the Sry protein products. Results: Eleven Sry loci have been identified in the SHR with one (nonHMG Sry) containing a frame shift mutation. The nonHMGSry is found and conserved in …

Review Of Spacewalker, Barrett Caldwell

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Since its founding over 15 years ago, JHPEE has always had a focal emphasis on human performance in space. Thus, it is no surprise that we would want to highlight a new book from astronaut Jerry L Ross, who has set records for launches and spacewalks with NASA. However, there is always more to an astronaut biography, as we have learned since the days of We Seven. Our interest in an astronaut’s life and experiences helps us to see the answers to four different questions, which tell us different things about this most unique of human performance environments.

N-Body:Many-Body Qm:Qm Vibrational Frequencies: Application To Small Hydrogen-Bonded Clusters, J. Coleman Howard, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present an efficient method for reproducing CCSD(T) (i.e., the coupled-cluster method with single, double and perturbative connected triple excitations) optimized geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies for molecular clusters with the N-body:Many-body QM:QM technique. In this work, all 1-body through N-body interactions are obtained from CCSD(T) computations, and the higher-order interactions are captured at the MP2 level. The linear expressions from the many-body expansion facilitate a straightforward evaluation of geometrical derivative properties (e.g., gradients and Hessians). For (H2O)n clusters (n = 3-7), optimized structures obtained with the 2-body:Many-body CCSD(T):MP2 method are virtually identical to CCSD(T) optimized geometries. …

Examination Of Tyrosine/Adenine Stacking Interactions In Protein Complexes, Kari L. Copeland, Samuel J. Pellock, James R. Cox, Mauricio L. Cafiero, Gregory S. Tschumper

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The π-stacking interactions between tyrosine amino acid side chains and adenine-bearing ligands are examined. Crystalline protein structures from the protein data bank (PDB) exhibiting face-to-face tyrosine/adenine arrangements were used to construct 20 unique 4-methylphenol/N9-methyladenine (p-cresol/9MeA) model systems. Full geometry optimization of the 20 crystal structures with the M06-2X density functional theory method identified 11 unique low-energy conformations. CCSD(T) complete basis set (CBS) limit interaction energies were estimated for all of the structures to determine the magnitude of the interaction between the two ring systems. CCSD(T) computations with double-ζ basis sets (e.g., 6-31G*(0.25) and aug-cc-pVDZ) indicate that the MP2 method overbinds …

Susan Bauer's 2003 Theory Of Well-Educated Mind: Could The Classical Approach To Teaching History Work In Southern California History K12 Classrooms?, Tomasz B. Stanek

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

The main purpose of this research evolved from the publication of S. W. Bauer Well-educated mind, a study of the significance of new methods of teaching history course. Bauer (2003) argues that the grammarian approach of simple recognition and memorization removes students from reading primary sources. This theory suggests a new methodology for the instructors and students through the three-stage process of grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric preparation with aid of primary sources or “great books list”. This paper supports Bauer’s thesis and provides evidence through extensive interviews that indeed this concept of pedagogy is present in Southern California schools.
