A Multidimensional Leadership Model For Rural Community College Presidents, Michael John Raich Jan 2013

A Multidimensional Leadership Model For Rural Community College Presidents, Michael John Raich

Theses and Dissertations

A qualitative study involving six rural community college presidents was conducted with the intended purpose of understanding what dimensions of leadership emerge from rural community college presidents during times of sustained financial distress. Unexpectedly, the presidents pointed the study's discussions to insights much broader than the issue of leading institutions with decreased budgets and instead presented qualitative data that redirected the researcher to explore what dimensions of rural community college leadership emerge because of the "new reality" of higher education. The new reality describes a higher education environment that--along with significantly decreased funding--includes rapidly changing technology, competition from for-profit institutions, …

A Case Study Of Elementary Teachers' Conceptions Of Environmental Literacy In Relationship To A Tall Grass Prairie Restoration Project, Teresa Jayne Shume Jan 2013

A Case Study Of Elementary Teachers' Conceptions Of Environmental Literacy In Relationship To A Tall Grass Prairie Restoration Project, Teresa Jayne Shume

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe seven elementary teachers' conceptions of environmental literacy in relationship to a tall grass prairie restoration project and to explore ways in which the tall grass prairie restoration project for third grade contributed to enhancing educational learning experiences. The research questions were: 1. What are teachers' conceptions of environmental literacy for third grade students? 2. How does the prairie restoration trip contribute to teachers' capacity to teach for environmental literacy of third grade students? 3. What is the pedagogical value of the prairie restoration project? The theoretical frameworks underpinning this study …

International Students' Confidence And Academic Success, Nicola Miky Telbis Jan 2013

International Students' Confidence And Academic Success, Nicola Miky Telbis

Theses and Dissertations

Research shows that the international student population is showing significant growth. Studies also show that foreign students are encountering difficulties such as social adaptability, language barriers, academic ability, and financial need. There is compelling evidence that establishes a correlation between a person's self-efficacy and his or her level of achievement. This study used quantitative analysis to determine if there is an association between international students' resources and their academic success. Analysis revealed that international students attending the University of North Dakota who scored high on their confidence levels in completing their programs of study also scored high on their confidence …

Is There A Disconnect? Comparing North Dakota And National Geography Standards, Lori Jean Young Jan 2013

Is There A Disconnect? Comparing North Dakota And National Geography Standards, Lori Jean Young

Theses and Dissertations

In 1994, Geography for Life was published. From this publication the national geography and state geography standards were developed. These national standards were the basis of the state standards.

North Dakota Studies is a Grade 9-12 course offered in North Dakota high schools. This course is offered under mandate in North Dakota high schools, so a broad range of data could be obtained by contacting those teachers.

Prior research has shown that students exposed to 3-D geographic technologies have better spatial abilities than students without a technologic background. A recent study showed that adults wanted to know more about geography …

Developing Hybrid Near-Space Technologies For Affordable Access To Suborbital Space, Brian David Badders Jan 2013

Developing Hybrid Near-Space Technologies For Affordable Access To Suborbital Space, Brian David Badders

Theses and Dissertations

High power rockets and high altitude balloons are two near-space technologies that could be combined in order to provide access to the mesosphere and, eventually, suborbital space. This "rockoon" technology has been used by several large budget space programs before being abandoned in favor of even more expensive, albeit more accurate, ground launch systems. With the increased development of nano-satellites and atmospheric sensors, combined with rising interest in global atmospheric data, there is an increase in desire for affordable access to extreme altitudes that does not necessarily require the precision of ground launches.

Development of hybrid near-space technologies for access …

Air Circulation Under Reduced Atmospheric Pressures, Lendell E. Hillhouse Jan 2013

Air Circulation Under Reduced Atmospheric Pressures, Lendell E. Hillhouse

Theses and Dissertations

The control of heat exchange is vital for plant life in off-world, low pressure,

greenhouses. The ability to control this process was limited by methodology and

technology. Mathematical models, based on classical mechanics are created to enhance

our control capabilities. Data is collected using various sensors placed inside the Low

Pressure Test Bed (LPTB) Chamber at Kennedy Space Center. Data from those sensors

became non-linear at various pressures below 25 kPa. We introduced mathematical

calibration corrections and found that sensor data linearity could be extended to a greater

range of pressures. These calibration corrections allow for sensor calibration corrections

in …

Pregnancy, Sexism, And The Greek System, Taylor Marie Walkky Jan 2013

Pregnancy, Sexism, And The Greek System, Taylor Marie Walkky

Theses and Dissertations

Both hostile and benevolent sexism have been found to correlate with attitudes related to pregnancy (Terrell et al, in prep). Benevolent and hostile sexism have both been shown to correlate with attitudes towards sorority members as well (Walkky, unpublished). The goal of the present study was to expand on the knowledge of how sexism relates to pregnancy attitudes, especially how it relates to sorority membership. Participants read a scenario about a college woman, who was either in a sorority or not, who had just discovered that she was pregnant. In the scenario, she chose to either end the pregnancy, continue …

Turf Quality Of Creeping Bentgrass Using Foliar Fertilization Tank-Mixed With Sprayable Organic Amendments, Nolan Roy Berg Jan 2013

Turf Quality Of Creeping Bentgrass Using Foliar Fertilization Tank-Mixed With Sprayable Organic Amendments, Nolan Roy Berg

Plant Sciences

The use of foliar fertilizer applications on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is a popular method of achieving quality turfgrass. Tank-mixing foliar products may increase turfgrass quality, reduce amount of applications, and create synergism between products. The objective of this thesis was to determine the effectiveness of tank-mixing organic amendments with N fertilizers to improve turfgrass quality. A greenhouse study was conducted in 2012 and 2013 to determine turf quality of three different N forms tank-mixed with three different organic amendments. Generally, urea treatments received the highest VQ among all N forms ranging from 1.6-3.5 higher than control. Experiment one; …

Unraveling The Genetics Of Seed Dormancy In Barley Using Genome-Wide Association And Biparental Mapping, Ana Maria Correa-Morales Jan 2013

Unraveling The Genetics Of Seed Dormancy In Barley Using Genome-Wide Association And Biparental Mapping, Ana Maria Correa-Morales

Plant Sciences

Seed dormancy is the delay or inability of viable seeds to germinate under favorable conditions. The differential expression of dormancy levels in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds impacts malt quality. While dormant genotypes are required to avoid the incidence of preharvest-sprouting, genotypes with low dormancy are needed for uniform germination of seeds during malting. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic basis underlying seed dormancy in spring barley using genome-wide association mapping (AM) and linkage mapping. A panel of 3,072 elite U.S. spring barley breeding lines from eight breeding programs participating in the USDA-NIFA Barley Coordinated Agricultural …
