Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher
Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher
Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation - Dissertations
The Deaf population faces substantial communication barriers in accessing quality health care. Many healthcare professionals struggle to communicate with Deaf individuals because they have little awareness of how to interact with these patients in culturally sensitive ways. This study sought to understand the perspectives and experiences of hearing border-crossers -- hearing people who cross "borders," figuratively, to interact and communicate with Deaf people. Hearing border crossers hold useful knowledge that will shed light in facilitating communication between Deaf patients and hearing healthcare professionals. Using symbolic interactionism as the epistemological framework, qualitative interviews were conducted with three clusters of hearing border …
Decoupled Third-Order Fuzzy Sliding Model Control For Cart-Inverted Pendulum System, Belal A.Elsayed, M. A. Hassan, Saad Mekhilef
Decoupled Third-Order Fuzzy Sliding Model Control For Cart-Inverted Pendulum System, Belal A.Elsayed, M. A. Hassan, Saad Mekhilef
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Cart Inverted Pendulum (CIP) system is a benchmark problem in nonlinear automatic control. It is commonly used to verify the robustness of any proposed nonlinear controller. CIP is mostly represented by two second order differential equations to avoid complexity due to the DC motor dynamics. This representation is not practical for the real CIP dynamics and might lead to instability. Therefore in this paper, two third-order differential equations were derived to combine the pendulum system and DC motor dynamics to have a more realistic mathematical model. Friction between the cart and rail was included in the system equations through a …

The National Muslim Forum Nepal: Experiences Of Conflict, Formations Of Identity, Megan Adamson Sijapati
The National Muslim Forum Nepal: Experiences Of Conflict, Formations Of Identity, Megan Adamson Sijapati
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
With Nepal's recent transition to state secularism, the politicization of Muslim religious identity has emerged with increasing vitality. One particular pan-Nepali Muslim organization, the Rastriya Muslim Mane Nepal (National Muslim Forum Nepal), offers a window into the complex relationship between national and religious identity that animates this politicization. Through analysis of the National Muslim Forum's earliest discourses, produced between 2005 and 2006, both immediately before and after the people's revolution that resulted in the declaration of Nepal as a secular state, this essay highlights the ways that experiences of conflict coupled with a national political transition shape and contribute to …

The Nose Knows: Encountering The Canine In Bisclavret, Alison Langdon
The Nose Knows: Encountering The Canine In Bisclavret, Alison Langdon
English Faculty Publications
For much of literary history, scholars have tended to focus on the symbolic valence of animals, to read their behavior and characteristics as representative of explicitly human interests and concerns. In the past medievalists have perhaps been even more prone to this, given that many of our sources providing descriptions of animal behavior, such as bestiaries, similarly emphasize the metaphorical or allegorical over the ethological.1 Thus when we read something like Bisclavret, Marie de France’s twelfth-century Anglo-Norman lai, scholars frequently discuss its werewolf protagonist as a foil for his much more beastly if wholly human wife. Communication Strategies And Language Proficiency Of Pre-Practicum Students, Vinchita G. Quinto, Lelani C. Dapat
Communication Strategies And Language Proficiency Of Pre-Practicum Students, Vinchita G. Quinto, Lelani C. Dapat
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The study describes and understands how pre-practicum students communicate, meaning using different communication strategies and how these strategies influence language proficiency. It attempts to explain how communication strategies affect proficiency in the language. The survey data on pre- practicum students’ communication strategy and the Language Proficiency Test were analyzed to find out the communication strategies’ influence on language proficiency. Results showed that communication strategies do not have an influence on language proficiency but the lack of proficiency and the lack of linguistic ability can be recompensed by using varied communication strategies in order to negotiate and communicate meaning and ideas. …
Development Of An Integrative-Comprehension Imagery Scale For Children With And Without Autism, Marcy Willard
Development Of An Integrative-Comprehension Imagery Scale For Children With And Without Autism, Marcy Willard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Autism is a debilitating disorder (Yurov et al., 2007) that is diagnosed in 1 in 88 children in America (CDC, 2012). The autism population overwhelmingly performs weakest in reading comprehension as compared to other academic areas (Chiang & Lin, 2007; Minshew, 1994). This identified weaknesses is concerning because comprehension is understood in the literature as the most critical curricular area (Chiang & Lin, 2007). One potential reason for these comprehension problems could be impaired imagery.
Neuropsychology research has found that children with autism cognitively process imagery differently than typical children, due to their unique brain structures (Just, Cherkassky, Keller, & …
Editorial Collaboration And Control: Laura Riding And The Seizen Press Years, Christina Cain Whitney
Editorial Collaboration And Control: Laura Riding And The Seizen Press Years, Christina Cain Whitney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the founding of Seizin Press in 1927, Laura Riding began a new epoch in her career as poet and literary theorist. Along with her partner, Robert Graves, Riding worked among and with important literary tastemakers of the Modernist era, such as Gertrude Stein, Len Lye and James Reeves. Riding's demanding and intense editorial and collaborative style resulted in some unique and fascinating works, such as the bizarrely beautiful Life of the Dead and the egomaniacal The World and Ourselves. Beyond close literary examination of the above works, this study looks at the pressures both within the Seizin Press …
A New Method To Evaluate Community Based Mediation Programs: Multi-Attribute Cost Utility Analysis, Cory William Stufflebeem
A New Method To Evaluate Community Based Mediation Programs: Multi-Attribute Cost Utility Analysis, Cory William Stufflebeem
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to develop a new approach to evaluating the cost-effectiveness of community based mediation programs in order to promote a more robust methodology for researching community based mediation in general, and to provide a means for the favorable claims of community based mediation to be accurately validated.
A methodology was created based on multi-attribute cost utility analysis. This analysis involves studying two programs simultaneously: a community based mediation program and a corresponding court adjudication program/institution. These programs are evaluated on three measures of effectiveness or attributes: satisfaction rating, number of successful cases processed, and compliance …
Sense-Making Bodies: Feminist Materiality And Phenomenology In Constructive Body Theologies, Heike Peckruhn
Sense-Making Bodies: Feminist Materiality And Phenomenology In Constructive Body Theologies, Heike Peckruhn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Constructive body theology provides an ethical commitment to and a set of analytical principles for understanding bodily experience. If we insist upon the theological value of embodied experience, how can we give an adequate account of it? Are feminist appeals to the senses useful in developing theological truth claims based in embodied experiences? Feminist theologies which explicitly seek to overcome body/mind dualisms often reinscribe them when they neglect to attend to perception as a critical element of bodily experience. Phenomenological analyses of perception (such as suggested by Merleau-Ponty) strengthen and refine our conception of embodiment. Grounding constructive theology in experience …
Spectacle, Sacrifice And The State: The Legacy Of European Fascism And The Revival Of Martyrdom In The Modern World, Gerald Robert Pace
Spectacle, Sacrifice And The State: The Legacy Of European Fascism And The Revival Of Martyrdom In The Modern World, Gerald Robert Pace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The rise of political martyrdom in the contemporary world is not a new phenomenon but can be traced back to at least the early Twentieth Century with the rise of European Fascist movements. Both they, and the fascist-like movements of today, share a cluster of characteristics that allow for fruitful comparisons of the ways in which martyrdom spectacles are used to communicate with constituent populations, facilitate a culture of violence, perpetuate their revolutionary zeal and demonstrate the characteristics of the ideal citizen. Examining four major movements; Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, the Palestinian Hamas and the modern Iran, this dissertation argues …
Beyond Survival To Thrival: A Narrative Study Of An Urban Teacher's Career Journey, Kristina Marie Valtierra
Beyond Survival To Thrival: A Narrative Study Of An Urban Teacher's Career Journey, Kristina Marie Valtierra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Teacher burn out contributes to the epidemic of early career exit. At least half of all new K-12 teachers leave the profession by the time they reach their fifth year of teaching. Conversely, there are urban teachers who survive burn out and thrive as career- long educators.
This qualitative study is an in-depth look into one 40-year veteran teacher's career narrative, answering the question: How did this teacher not only survive but also thrive as a career-long urban teacher? Additionally, the following sub-questions are explored: a) How is her spirit sustained throughout her teacher lifecycle? b) How can her …

Post-Oppositional Culture Theory: Counter Narratives Of African American Preservice Teachers, Sonya Victoria Scott
Theses Digitization Project
This study seeks to counter the social narrative that African Americans resist schooling by examining African American post baccalaureate college students that have developed a passion for learning as demonstrated in their persistence and motivations to enter the teaching profession. Racially correlated disparities prevalent in standardized test scores, high school dropout rates and college eligibility remain one of the most pervasive educational dilemmas facing public schools across the nation. African Americans are identified as significantly under performing when compared to the average performance of white students.

Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran
Visualizing Hate: Maus As Holocaust Literature, Geoffrey Daniel Curran
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus affected traditional classifications of Holocaust writings, specifically literary memoir. Genre studies use Holocaust writings especially those classified as "literary memoirs", to define a narrow group to exclusion of texts like Maus. If Maus was not 'allowed' to be defined as memoir then was it solely cast as fiction? To view it as fictional would have denied that Maus was a graphic novel which interlaces both received testimonial 'truth' and receptive 'truth'.

Sperm Stealers & Post Gay Politics: Lesbian-Parented Families In Film And Television, Elena Rose Martinez
Sperm Stealers & Post Gay Politics: Lesbian-Parented Families In Film And Television, Elena Rose Martinez
Theses Digitization Project
This study is theoretically significant because it addresses gaps in scholarly knowledge regarding media representations of same-sex parented families, and more specficially, lesbian-parented families. Findings of this study may also inform content-producers as to trends in representation and relevant issues of power and sexuality as well as political-economic factors to consider in future productions. This study addresses the political economy of a segment of sexual minorities that already have an uneasy history with marketers: lesbians.

The Content Of Thought Experiments And Philosophical Context, Kevin G. Gilfether
The Content Of Thought Experiments And Philosophical Context, Kevin G. Gilfether
Honors Papers
Thought experiments are one common method of trying to make a philosophical point. However, there is the question of how useful thought experiments are in telling us about the world: what does thinking about killing a king tell us about actually killing a king? Timothy Williamson offers an account of thought experiments based upon a general cognitive capacity to consider counterfactuals. Anna-Sara Malmgren is critical of such a capacity. This work assess both accounts in the context of common philosophical thought experiments and finds Williamson's could be sharpened by considerations from philosophical context and facts from cognitive science.

Resistance To Constitutional Theory: The Supreme Court, Constitutional Change, And The "Pragmatic Moment", B. Jessie Hill
Faculty Publications
This Article approaches the law-politics divide from a new angle. Drawing on the insights of literary theory, this Article argues that every act of interpretation, including constitutional interpretation, inevitably draws not only on text but also on context, and that the relevant context extends beyond both the written document and the historical context of its origination. This understanding derives from speech-act theory and from postmodern literary theory. As Paul de Man argues in his seminal essay, The Resistance to Theory, moreover, the act of interpretation always encompasses a “pragmatic moment” that undermines the effort to attain perfect theoretical coherence. Applying …
