Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of speech therapy on children with functional articulation disorder with and without sensory integration dysfunction. Method: 20 young children were divided into two groups, those without sensory integration dysfunction (normal group, 10 children) and those with it (abnormal group, 10 children). The Mandarin Consonant Articulation Test for Preschool Children was administered on the children before and after therapy for articulation function. The oral motor function was evaluated by the Riley Motor Problems Inventory Oral Motor Tasks. Total of treatment sessions was recorded after the therapy. Results: Differences between the two groups in terms of age, …

From Cultural Third-Worldism To The Literary World-System, Jernej Habjan Dec 2013

From Cultural Third-Worldism To The Literary World-System, Jernej Habjan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "From Cultural Third-Worldism to the Literary World-System" Jernej Habjan links the debate on Franco Moretti's distant reading to the debate on Fredric Jameson's "third world culture." In and around this debate, Aijaz Ahmad both critiqued close reading and rejected Jameson's "Third-Worldism." What Jameson's and Ahmad's interventions into literary theory meant at the end of the real-socialist alternative and what Moretti's meant at the end of the US-American alternative to real-socialism, a synoptic reading of all three interventions might help achieve at the end of what seemed the European alternative to the US-American alternative.

National Literatures As Intimate Expression And The Problem Of Teaching World Literatures, Kette Thomas Dec 2013

National Literatures As Intimate Expression And The Problem Of Teaching World Literatures, Kette Thomas

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "National Literatures as Intimate Expression and the Problem of Teaching World Literatures" Kette Thomas analyzes the fundamental tension embedded in the discourse on teaching world literatures. Thomas focuses on models which contextualize the problem around the subject of allegiance either to the reader or the author rather than the commonly limited geographical, national, and politically defined complex. Focus on the reader or author is often made at the expense of the "other," but it is the tension and communication between them that offers possibilities for the development of the discipline of comparative literature (against Eurocentrism and the …

Inflation In Enrichment Claims: Reflections On The Brazilian Civil Code, Aimite Jorge Dec 2013

Inflation In Enrichment Claims: Reflections On The Brazilian Civil Code, Aimite Jorge

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Inflation can be one of the risks assumed by the parties to a contract. Notwithstanding, contractual terms may provide for monetary corrections to offset that risk in cases of foreseeable inflation. The same may not hold true, however, for claims based on unjustified enrichment. They may find themselves in the position of innocents because the events that brought about the decline of purchasing power of the currency were unconnected to them. This paper analyses the approach recently favoured in the new Brazilian Civil Code on inflation in enrichment claims. Its focus is on article 884 (headed “enriquecimento sem justa causa”), …

Evaluating Survival Of Greater Sage-Grouse Chicks In Strawberry Valley, Utah, By Use Of Microtransmitters: Does Handling Time Negatively Influence Survival Rates?, Jared J. Baxter, Jordan P. Hennefer, Rick J. Baxter, Randy T. Larsen, Jerran T. Flinders Dec 2013

Evaluating Survival Of Greater Sage-Grouse Chicks In Strawberry Valley, Utah, By Use Of Microtransmitters: Does Handling Time Negatively Influence Survival Rates?, Jared J. Baxter, Jordan P. Hennefer, Rick J. Baxter, Randy T. Larsen, Jerran T. Flinders

Western North American Naturalist

Research indicates that low nest success and juvenile survival may be factors contributing to Greater Sage-Grouse population declines. Recent technological advances in microtransmitters have allowed researchers to monitor individual chicks and broods. We initiated a chick survival study in 2006 and used microtransmitters to (1) examine the viability of using microtransmitters on chicks to assess survival, including the effect of handling time during the suturing process; (2) estimate overall chick survival; and (3) compare chick survival in the Strawberry Valley population to other published reports. We used a known-fate model in program MARK to estimate ĉ (overdispersion), weekly survival rates, …

Net Primary Productivity Of Subalpine Meadows In Yosemite National Park In Relation To Climate Variability, Peggy E. Moore, Jan W. Van Wagtendonk, Julie L. Yee, Mitchel P. Mcclaran, David N. Cole, Neil K. Mcdougald, Matthew L. Brooks Dec 2013

Net Primary Productivity Of Subalpine Meadows In Yosemite National Park In Relation To Climate Variability, Peggy E. Moore, Jan W. Van Wagtendonk, Julie L. Yee, Mitchel P. Mcclaran, David N. Cole, Neil K. Mcdougald, Matthew L. Brooks

Western North American Naturalist

Subalpine meadows are some of the most ecologically important components of mountain landscapes, and primary productivity is important to the maintenance of meadow functions. Understanding how changes in primary productivity are associated with variability in moisture and temperature will become increasingly important with current and anticipated changes in climate. Our objective was to describe patterns and variability in aboveground live vascular plant biomass in relation to climatic factors. We harvested aboveground biomass at peak growth from four 64-m2 plots each in xeric, mesic, and hydric meadows annually from 1994 to 2000. Data from nearby weather stations provided independent variables …

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas Dec 2013

Producing Space: Block-By-Block Change In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Jen Douglas

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Gentrification of urban neighborhoods is part of an ongoing restructuring of the city, linked to the emerging occupational structure of the service economy and the remaking of built environments that were created for a production economy. It is the name given to processes in which commodification and reinvestment accompany the in-migration of professional and managerial workers, often displacing prior residents and giving altered spatial form to inequality.

This dissertation is a case study of gentrification in Hyde and Jackson Squares, part of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. The emergence of gentrification pressures and their uneven distribution within the area is documented …

Studying Soil Moisture And Land-To-Water Carbon Export In Urbanized Coastal Areas Using Remotely Sensed Data And A Regional Hydro-Ecological Model, Yun Yang Dec 2013

Studying Soil Moisture And Land-To-Water Carbon Export In Urbanized Coastal Areas Using Remotely Sensed Data And A Regional Hydro-Ecological Model, Yun Yang

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

The main objective of this research was to study the flux of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from a terrestrial urbanized watershed to an estuarine system using a process-based regional hydro-ecological model and remotely sensed data.

While DOC is an important component of the global carbon cycle, the link of the variations in terrestrial carbon storage is still poorly understood. Soil moisture is a key factor that influences the amount of available water for vegetation growth and the decomposition rate of organic matter in the soil and thus contributes to the amount of DOC in the soil at the land-water boundary. …

The Treatment Of Pain With Heel Fat Pad Syndrome By Hyaluronic Acid Injection: A Casereport, Wei-Han Chang, Chih-Kuan Wu, Yu-Cheng Pei, Chih-Chi Chen, Alice Mk Wong Dec 2013

The Treatment Of Pain With Heel Fat Pad Syndrome By Hyaluronic Acid Injection: A Casereport, Wei-Han Chang, Chih-Kuan Wu, Yu-Cheng Pei, Chih-Chi Chen, Alice Mk Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Plantar fasciitis and heel fat pad syndrome are two of the most common causes of plantar heel pain. Because the clinical symptoms and signs are similar, the differential diagnosis between plantar fasciitis and heel fat pad syndrome is important for proper treatment. Unfortunately, conservative treatment strategies are less effective for plantar heel pain caused by heel fat pad syndrome. We present here a 56-year-old male patient with bilateral plantar heel pain that was especially severe in the left foot. We gave him an injection of 2 ml high-concentration, cross-linked hyaluronic acid into the deep derma of the painful heel pad …

Evaluation Of Pediatric Subjects With Swallowing Disorder Part Ii, Luh Karunia Wahyuni, Ming-Yen Hsiao, Hsing-Kuo Wang, Tyng-Guey Wang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The characteristics of pediatric swallowing, anatomical differences between pediatrics and adults, and swallowing problems in common pediatric diseases had been introduced in Part 1 of the article. The common methods for evaluation of pediatric swallowing are discussed in this part. The evaluation of swallowing function in pediatric patients is a great clinical challenge. It requires a team approach, an integration of multiple disciplines, and instrumental evaluations for establishing a diagnosis and developing an appropriate management plan. This article provides an introduction of the vital concept of clinical bedside evaluation and instrumental evaluation including the videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), fibroptic endoscopic …

Future War, Future Law, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2013

Future War, Future Law, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

Advancing technology will dramatically affect the weapons and tactics of future armed conflict, including the “places” where conflicts are fought, the “actors” by whom they are fought, and the “means and methods” by which they are fought. These changes -- including continuing cyber conflict, increased use of autonomous weapon systems, the development of nanotechnology, and evolving virology capabilities -- will stress even the fundamental principles of the law of armed conflict, or LOAC. While it is likely that the contemporary LOAC will be sufficient to regulate the majority of future conflicts, the international community must be willing to evolve the …

Guantanamo And The End Of Hostilities, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2013

Guantanamo And The End Of Hostilities, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

Detainees in the War on Terror have been at Guantanamo Bay for over a decade. The justification for these detentions has been, at least in part, the on-going hostilities in Afghanistan. However, President Obama’s announcement in his 2013 State of the Union address that “By the end of [2014] our war in Afghanistan will be over” may undercut the continuing detention authority for at least some of these Guantanamo detainees. This paper analyzes the legal doctrine of release and repatriation in light of President Obama’s announcement and concludes that the President’s determination that hostilities have concluded between specific Parties to …

Joint Effect Of Multiple Common Snps Predicts Melanoma Susceptibility, Shenying Fang, Jiali Han, Mingfeng Zhang, Li-E Wang, Qingyi Wei, Christopher I. Amos, Jeffrey E. Lee Dec 2013

Joint Effect Of Multiple Common Snps Predicts Melanoma Susceptibility, Shenying Fang, Jiali Han, Mingfeng Zhang, Li-E Wang, Qingyi Wei, Christopher I. Amos, Jeffrey E. Lee

Dartmouth Scholarship

Single genetic variants discovered so far have been only weakly associated with melanoma. This study aims to use multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) jointly to obtain a larger genetic effect and to improve the predictive value of a conventional phenotypic model. We analyzed 11 SNPs that were associated with melanoma risk in previous studies and were genotyped in MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and Harvard Medical School investigations. Participants with ≥15 risk alleles were 5-fold more likely to have melanoma compared to those carrying ≤6. Compared to a model using the most significant single variant rs12913832, the increase in predictive …
