A Cost/Benefit Evaluation Of Incentives Paid For Asphalt Concrete Hot Mix (Achm) Properties, Christopher T. Mckenney Dec 2013

A Cost/Benefit Evaluation Of Incentives Paid For Asphalt Concrete Hot Mix (Achm) Properties, Christopher T. Mckenney

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was establishing if projects receiving incentive payments for Asphalt Concrete Hot Mix (ACHM) properties were providing a better quality and longer pavement life cycle. Reviewing governmental agencies' and states' Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, through literary review, indicated other possible guidelines and recommendations. Results were formulated by employing a specific methodology, allowing for data validation through an ordered series of groupings and project pairings. Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) databases furnished essential pavement data to accomplish this task. Derived from methodology, data analysis supported the comparison analysis of selected construction projects. Documented conclusions validated …

Monitoring And Evaluating Co-Teachers In The Inclusion Classroom, Angela Mobley Betancourt Dec 2013

Monitoring And Evaluating Co-Teachers In The Inclusion Classroom, Angela Mobley Betancourt

Theses and Dissertations

Inclusion programs have expanded in schools across the country as educational leaders strive to meet the needs of a more diverse group of students. In response to Special Education legislation, schools and districts implemented programs and strategies for students with disabilities in the general education setting as increasing numbers of students with diverse needs were included. Inclusion reinforced the recognition that one person cannot effectively respond to the various psychological and educational needs of students in current classrooms. Many schools are now implementing the co-teaching model in response to the new demands on classroom teachers. By definition, the general education …

Study Of Surface Modification Of Tungsten Nanostructures For Superhydrophobic Applications, Richard Alletru Dec 2013

Study Of Surface Modification Of Tungsten Nanostructures For Superhydrophobic Applications, Richard Alletru

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, we studied the impact of the modification of the structure of tungsten surfaces through physical vapor deposition (magnetron sputtering), electrochemical (anodization and electropolishing), and thermal (annealing) processes on the wettability of the designed surfaces. We observed static contact angle values ranging from around 10° to above 150° showing the importance of the techniques used to produce the surfaces. We noticed that the annealing process tends to increase the wettability, transforming hydrophobic surfaces into hydrophilic surfaces. We also observed that electropolishing affects the wettability in such a way that the contact angles of pre-chemically treated tungsten foils tend …

The Osh Family Of Proteins And Their Role In Caloric Restriction-Mediated Lifespan Extension In The Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Douglas Craft Dec 2013

The Osh Family Of Proteins And Their Role In Caloric Restriction-Mediated Lifespan Extension In The Budding Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, William Douglas Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Oxysterol-binding protein homolouges (OSH) have been implicated in mediating non-vesicular sterol transport. Caloric restriction (CR) down-regulates sterol synthesis in a variety of organisms, including the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. OSH6, when up-regulated, extends replicative lifespan. In contrast, OSH5 up-regulation shortens replicative lifespan. In this thesis I obtained evidence to show that the deletion of OSH5 extends replicative lifespan in normal media. Deletion of OSH5 in the presence of caloric restriction blocks the lifespan-extending properties of the CR media. My data demonstrate that the total cellular sterol levels of the longevity mutants are indistinguishable from that of wild type. This suggests …

Transport, Deposition, And Hygroscopic Growth Of Diverse-Regime Aerosols In Human Respiratory Airways Of Varying Ages, Jongwon Kim Dec 2013

Transport, Deposition, And Hygroscopic Growth Of Diverse-Regime Aerosols In Human Respiratory Airways Of Varying Ages, Jongwon Kim

Theses and Dissertations

Determining how many inhaled aerosols deposit in human respiratory airways and where they deposit (i.e., respiratory dosimetry) are of critical importance in a number of fields. Applications of respiratory dosimetry modeling include evaluating health effects of inhaled pollutants, establishing environmental exposure standards, and developing effective techniques for delivering pharmaceutical aerosols to the lung. However, the manifold characteristics of aerosols coupled with the complexity of respiratory tract make such analysis a challenging task as well as a highly multidisciplinary effort, entailing expertise from medicine, engineering, and physiology. In this study, three major factors that affect particle transport and depositions were systematically …

An Interstate Runs Through It: The Construction Of Little Rock's Interstate 630 And The Fight To Stop It, Darcy Pumphrey Dec 2013

An Interstate Runs Through It: The Construction Of Little Rock's Interstate 630 And The Fight To Stop It, Darcy Pumphrey

Theses and Dissertations

Completion of the first mile of Interstate 630 (I-630) occurred in 1969. However, demands from organized community groups and litigation delayed completion of the full seven-and-a-half mile route until 1985. While the freeway resistance movement in Little Rock did not stop the construction of I-630 - it did gain influence over many key decisions within the planning and construction process. Through an examination of the construction of I-630, this thesis advances the basic understanding of the elements of an organized freeway revolt and serves as a guide for other communities as they navigate their own freeway planning efforts. In order …

On The Orientation Dependence Of The Casimir Force, Christopher David Markle Dec 2013

On The Orientation Dependence Of The Casimir Force, Christopher David Markle

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In the 83 years of its development, Casimir force theory has seen many advances.

However, there still exists a need for more comprehensive approaches, particularly to complex geometries. To this end we have developed an approach to the Casimir force and demonstrated its use in predicting the Casimir force present in many cases such as the case of a single hollow sphere, finite size parallel plates, and anisotropic conductors.

Within the field of Casimir force experimentation, many predicted characteristics have not yet been demonstrated. To that end, we are performing an experiment designed to investigate the orientational dependence of the …

Efficient Design Of Nanoplasmonic Waveguide Devices Using The Space Mapping Algorithm, Pouya Dastmalchi, Georgios Veronis Dec 2013

Efficient Design Of Nanoplasmonic Waveguide Devices Using The Space Mapping Algorithm, Pouya Dastmalchi, Georgios Veronis

Faculty Publications

We show that the space mapping algorithm, originally developed for microwave circuit optimization, can enable the efficient design of nanoplasmonic waveguide devices which satisfy a set of desired specifications. Space mapping utilizes a physics-based coarse model to approximate a fine model accurately describing a device. Here the fine model is a full-wave finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) simulation of the device, while the coarse model is based on transmission line theory. We demonstrate that simply optimizing the transmission line model of the device is not enough to obtain a device which satisfies all the required design specifications. On the other hand, when …

Deciphering Babel: Dis/Locations Of The Professional Self And The Second Language Curriculum, Sandra R. Barros Dec 2013

Deciphering Babel: Dis/Locations Of The Professional Self And The Second Language Curriculum, Sandra R. Barros

The Qualitative Report

In the following (auto) ethnographic study, I draw from Burdick’s (2012) analogy of qualitative research as “auto - archeology” and from parrhesia (Foucault, 1988) as a rhetorical device of self - definition and preservation to explore the interplay of power and identity within the context of second language education discourses. Specifically, I focus on the ways in which, through the creation of particular performative strategies, two educators working within the context of Liberal Arts institutions negotiate, construct and resist the everyday pressures and implied prejudices often associated with the curriculum and instruction of second languages in the United States. I …

The Syntax Of The Arabic Determiner Phrase, Mohamed Cheikh Beina Dec 2013

The Syntax Of The Arabic Determiner Phrase, Mohamed Cheikh Beina

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to analyze the syntactic structure of the Arabic determiner phrase (DP) within the confines of Chomsky's minimalist program. Attention is drawn to a number of the misconceptions many linguists have about this constituent. Some of the issues that linguists overlook include the existence of an indefinite article as well as a possessive determiner that heads the genitive phrase. A new analysis of agreement within DP is presented, as well as an argument against the construct state analysis and analyses of other related issues.

Human Rights Pragmatism And Human Dignity, David Luban Dec 2013

Human Rights Pragmatism And Human Dignity, David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Human rights sound a lot like moral rights: rights that we have because we are human. Many philosophers think it follows that the list of international human rights must therefore be founded on some philosophical account of moral rights or of human dignity. More recently, other philosophers have rejected this foundationalist picture of international human rights (“foundationalist” meaning that moral rights are the foundation of international human rights). These critics argue that international human rights need no philosophical foundation; instead, we should look to the actual practices of human rights: the practices of international institutions, tribunals, NGOs, monitors, and activists. …
