The Implications Of Active Participation Among The Elderly To Care Giving, Sta. Maria Madelene Jun 2012

The Implications Of Active Participation Among The Elderly To Care Giving, Sta. Maria Madelene

APIAS-TSAO-ILC Symposium for Junior Researchers on Active Ageing 2012

The aging population in the Philippines has grown to over six million in 2011. This increase translates to an increase in family expenditures, with care of old adults being regarded more of a family rather than a state responsibility in the country. Transitions occurring within the Filipino family, such as increased local and foreign migration, or the growth of single-person households, will likewise result in changes in care giving arrangements for the Filipino elderly. Research studies have found that active participation addresses caregiving costs and concerns currently being faced by Filipino families. By engaging actively, old adults are able to …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. Much is known concerning AD pathophysiology but our understanding of the disease at the systems level remains incomplete. Previous AD research has used resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fcMRI) to assess the integrity of functional networks within the brain. Most studies have focused on the default-mode network (DMN), a primary locus of AD pathology. However, other brain regions are inevitably affected with disease progression. We studied rs-fcMRI in five functionally defined brain networks within a large cohort of human participants of either gender (n = 510) that ranged in …

Repeated Origin And Loss Of Adhesive Toepads In Geckos, Tony Gamble, Eli Greenbaum, Todd R. Jackman, Anthony P. Russell, Aaron M. Bauer Jun 2012

Repeated Origin And Loss Of Adhesive Toepads In Geckos, Tony Gamble, Eli Greenbaum, Todd R. Jackman, Anthony P. Russell, Aaron M. Bauer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Geckos are well known for their extraordinary clinging abilities and many species easily scale vertical or even inverted surfaces. This ability is enabled by a complex digital adhesive mechanism (adhesive toepads) that employs van der Waals based adhesion, augmented by frictional forces. Numerous morphological traits and behaviors have evolved to facilitate deployment of the adhesive mechanism, maximize adhesive force and enable release from the substrate. The complex digital morphologies that result allow geckos to interact with their environment in a novel fashion quite differently from most other lizards. Details of toepad morphology suggest multiple gains and losses of the adhesive …

The Effect Of Corticision On The Rate Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Rats, Hamed Vaziri Jun 2012

The Effect Of Corticision On The Rate Of Orthodontic Tooth Movement In Rats, Hamed Vaziri

Master's Theses

Minimal treatment time is a primary goal for orthodontic therapy. Reducing treatment time decreases risk of caries, periodontal disease, root resorption, and increases patient satisfaction. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a result of bone resorption and apposition; factors influencing the rate at which these processes take place may affect OTM. Various attempts have been made to shorten treatment time. The regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP) has been used to modify the balance between resorption and apposition of bone through selectively injuring the cortical plate of the alveolus to accelerate tooth movement. This approach is limited due to the need of flap …

Butterbeer, Cauldron Cakes, And Fizzing Whizzbees: Food In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Leisa Anne Clark Jun 2012

Butterbeer, Cauldron Cakes, And Fizzing Whizzbees: Food In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter Series, Leisa Anne Clark

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACTThis thesis situates the Harry Potter books into the greater body of food studies and into the extant children's literary tradition through an examination of how food can be used to understand cultural identity. Food is a biological need, but because we have created social rules and rituals around food consumption and sharing, there is more to eating than simple nutritional value. The Harry Potter series is as much about overcoming childhood adversity, and good versus evil, as it is about magic, and food in the Harry Potter series is both abundant and relevant to the narrative, context, and themes …

The Role And Regulation Of Nsars: A Cell-Envelope Stress Sensing Two-Component System In Staphylococcus Aureus, Stacey Lynn Kolar Jun 2012

The Role And Regulation Of Nsars: A Cell-Envelope Stress Sensing Two-Component System In Staphylococcus Aureus, Stacey Lynn Kolar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

S. aureus has 16 predicted two-component systems (TCS) that respond to a range of environmental stimuli, and allow for adaptation to stresses. Of these 16, three have no known function, and are not homologous to any other TCS found in closely related organisms. NsaRS is one such element, and belongs to the intramembrane-sensing histidine kinase (IM-HK) family, which is conserved within the Firmicutes. The regulators are defined by a small sensing domain within their histidine kinase, suggesting that they do not sense external signals, but stress in or at the membrane. Our characterization of NsaRS in this work reveals …

Caehnorhabditis Elegans: A Low-Cost In Vivo Animal Model For Efficacy Studies Of Novel Antibiotics, Rylee Ann Gregory

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Since the 1940s, antibiotics have greatly reduced the adverse effects of infectious diseases caused by microbes. However, due to excessive, and often incorrect, use of known antibiotics, many organisms have adapted antibiotic resistance. Currently, over 70% of known infectious bacteria are resistant to at least one antibiotic. In the U.S. , 90,000 deaths occur each year due to infection by bacteria resistant to antibiotics. This number has increased by nearly 75,000 in the last 20 years. It is necessary, therefore, to continue developing new antibiotics in an effort to keep up with increasing antibiotic resistance. Traditional in vitro and whole …

Rumination And Emotional Adjustment: The Role Of Social Networking Sites, Tanya B. Tran Jun 2012

Rumination And Emotional Adjustment: The Role Of Social Networking Sites, Tanya B. Tran

Open Access Dissertations

Recent research posits that it is not necessarily the immediate response to stressful life events that is associated with an increased risk for the onset and recurrence of emotional disorders, but the way in which people regulate the ensuing emotions. A tendency to respond to negative mood states with perseverative thinking, such as rumination, has been shown to increase the risk for emotional disorders. The use of social networking sites, such as Facebook, may provide new means of triggering and prolonging perseverative thinking, exacerbating negative mood and negatively affecting adjustment following a stressful life event. Results from a pilot study …

Part I. Anionic Acyl Transfer Catalysis;Part Ii. Enantioselective Alcoholysis Of Acyl Donors;Part Iii. Enantioselective N-Acylation, Xing Yang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Neutral Lewis bases, such as 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine and N-methylimidazole, are widely used as acyl transfer catalysts. In contrast, anionic nucleophiles have been little explored in acyl transfer catalysis, although their high nucleophilicity may enable unique applications. In the course of my studies, 1,2,4-triazole anion was found to be an effective acyl transfer catalyst in both aminolysis and transesterification reactions. These findings pave the way to designing asymmetric anionic acyl transfer catalysts, which may be useful, e.g., for catalytic kinetic resolution of chiral amines.

From 2003 to 2009, our group developed four generations of amidine-based enantioselective acyl transfer catalysts(ABCs) and applied them …

Experimental Interrogation Of One-Dimensional Excitons In Cadmium Selenide And Cadmium Telluride Quantum Nanostructures, Virginia Lorraine Wayman Jun 2012

Experimental Interrogation Of One-Dimensional Excitons In Cadmium Selenide And Cadmium Telluride Quantum Nanostructures, Virginia Lorraine Wayman

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The lengths of one-dimensional quantum wires: QWs) make them excellent candidates for implementation into devices that require charge transport over micrometer-scale distances. Additionally, their tunable band-gap energies, polarized emission, and large absorption cross sections make them quite attractive for potential use in photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. The quantum-confined radial dimension of quantum wires increases the coulombic interaction between photo-generated excitons, and therefore increase the exciton binding energy as compared to bulk and quantum well structures. In this thesis, excitons in single one-dimensional CdSe and CdTe QWs were investigated using a combination of optical microscopy techniques. My work indicates that excitons …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Obesity and diabetes mellitus adversely affect postischemic heart remodeling via incompletely understood mechanisms. C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein-3 (CTRP3) is a newly identified adipokine exerting beneficial metabolic regulation, similar to adiponectin. The aim of the present study was to determine whether CTRP3 may regulate postischemic cardiac remodeling and cardiac dysfunction, and, if so, to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

METHODS AND RESULTS: Male adult mice were subjected to myocardial infarction (MI) via left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion. Both the effect of MI on endogenous CTRP3 expression/production and the effect of exogenous CTRP3 (adenovirus or recombinant CTRP3) replenishment on MI injury …

A Prospective Characterization Of Postpartum Changes In Uterine Fibroid Volume Among Black African Women, Christine W. Murungi Jun 2012

A Prospective Characterization Of Postpartum Changes In Uterine Fibroid Volume Among Black African Women, Christine W. Murungi

Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Background: Fibroids are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterus common in women of reproductive age. The prevalence is thought to be higher amongst women over the age of 35 years and in African women. More women are delaying their child bearing leading to an increase in the number of women dealing with pregnancy in the context of fibroids. The relationship between pregnancy and fibroids is controversial. It is thought that pregnancy exerts a protective effect, an observation made from epidemiological and animal studies. Although the mechanism is not clear, the postpartum period is thought to possibly explain this benefit. …

Post-Fire Soil Water Repellency: Extent, Severity And Thickness Relative To Ecological Site Characteristics Within Piñon-Juniper Woodlands, Daniel Lewis Zvirzdin Jun 2012

Post-Fire Soil Water Repellency: Extent, Severity And Thickness Relative To Ecological Site Characteristics Within Piñon-Juniper Woodlands, Daniel Lewis Zvirzdin

Theses and Dissertations

Erosion and weed dominance often limit the recovery of burned piñon-juniper woodlands. Soil water repellency (SWR) is one factor that may contribute to this by increasing overland flow and impeding seedling establishment. In spite of these effects, the extent of SWR within piñon-juniper woodlands is unknown. In this study, the extent, severity and thickness of SWR were sampled across 41 1,000 m2 plots within three 2009 Utah wildfires. Predictive models of SWR were built from ecological site characteristic data collected at each site. Across the study, SWR was found at 37% of the points sampled. SWR extent was strongly related …

First Steps Towards Hearts And Minds? Usaid's Countering Violent Extremism Policies In Africa, Daniel P. Aldrich

PPRI Digital Library

The United States government has adopted new approaches to counter violent extremist organizations around the world. “Soft security” and development programs include focused educational training for groups vulnerable to terrorist recruitment, norm messaging through local radio programming, and job creation in rural communities. This article evaluates the effectiveness of one set of these multi-vectored, community-level programs through analysis of data from 200 respondents in two similar, neighboring cities in northern Mali, Africa. The data show that residents in Timbuktu who were exposed to the programming for up to five years displayed measurably altered civic behavior and listening patterns in comparison …

The Role Of Argininosuccinate Synthase Serine 328 Phosphorylation In Nitric Oxide Production, Ricci Haines Jun 2012

The Role Of Argininosuccinate Synthase Serine 328 Phosphorylation In Nitric Oxide Production, Ricci Haines

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Until recently, the main mechanism of argininosuccinate synthase (AS) regulation was described to exist mainly at the level of transcription. Transcriptional regulation of AS has been shown to be coordinate with eNOS in response to shear stress, hypoxia, tumor necrosis factor á (TNF-á), and PPAR ã agonist troglitizone. However, it is now understood that one level of NO regulation is cellular control of arginine availability to eNOS via post-translational modifications of AS such as phosphorylation. The purpose of this investigation was to determine under what conditions AS is phosphorylated at S328, identify the pathway that AS phosphorylation at S328 plays …
