Hypotheses Generation As Supervised Link Discovery With Automated Class Labeling On Large-Scale Biomedical Concept Networks, Jayasimha R. Katukuri, Ying Xie, Vijay Raghavan, Ashish Gupta

Faculty Articles

Computational approaches to generate hypotheses from biomedical literature have been studied intensively in recent years. Nevertheless, it still remains a challenge to automatically discover novel, cross-silo biomedical hypotheses from large-scale literature repositories. In order to address this challenge, we first model a biomedical literature repository as a comprehensive network of biomedical concepts and formulate hypotheses generation as a process of link discovery on the concept network. We extract the relevant information from the biomedical literature corpus and generate a concept network and concept-author map on a cluster using Map-Reduce framework. We extract a set of heterogeneous features such as random …

Observations Of A Developing Boundary Layer In A Tidally Forced Estuary, Meagan E. Wengrove Jan 2012

Observations Of A Developing Boundary Layer In A Tidally Forced Estuary, Meagan E. Wengrove

Master's Theses and Capstones

Field observations of sediment resuspension within a developing tidal boundary layer were collected during two field deployments from summer 2011 in a long straight channel of the Great Bay Estuary of New Hampshire. The first deployment observed boundary layer development during typical tidal forcing, while the second deployment monitored the tidal boundary layer development response to Tropical Storm Irene. During a typical flood tide, the flow field over the flat sandy mud bed at the monitoring location is unidirectional. Bed stress estimations suggest that during typical tidal forcing, the Estuary is in local morphological equilibrium, and the boundary layer supports …

Strategies Of Cooperation And Punishment Among Students And Clerical Workers, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari Jan 2012

Strategies Of Cooperation And Punishment Among Students And Clerical Workers, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari

ESI Working Papers

We study the individual behavior of students and workers in an experiment where they repeatedly face the same cooperative task. The data show that clerical workers differ from college students in overall cooperation rates, strategy adoption and use of punishment opportunities. Students cooperate more than workers. Cooperation increases in both subject pools when a personal punishment option is available. Students are less likely than workers to adopt strategies of unconditional defection, and more likely to select strategies of conditional cooperation. Finally, students are more likely than workers to sanction uncooperative behavior by adopting decentralized punishment, and also personal punishment when …

Implications Of Decade Time Scale Arctic Plant Community Change On Ecosystem Function, Mark Jason Lara Jan 2012

Implications Of Decade Time Scale Arctic Plant Community Change On Ecosystem Function, Mark Jason Lara

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Almost half the global soil organic carbon pool is found in northern high latitudes. The majority of this soil carbon is stored in a greenhouse inert state within permafrost. As pronounced warming of high northern latitudes ensues, there is a strong likelihood that this substantial soil organic carbon pool will be mobilized to the atmosphere where it is likely to positively enhance greenhouse warming. Modeling studies suggest this positive feedback could alter future climate states of the Arctic and the globe, and affect how humans may need to adapt to climate change. Accordingly, understanding the patterns and controls and the …

New Multi-Objective Evolutionary Game Theory Algorithm For Border Security, Franciso Oswaldo Aguirre Jan 2012

New Multi-Objective Evolutionary Game Theory Algorithm For Border Security, Franciso Oswaldo Aguirre

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The complexity of border security relays on the diversity and volume of illegal activity that must be controlled, and the variety of resources that can be deployed to secure the border. A key operational problem encountered by those charged with the task of border security is the scheduling and deployment of patrols. Patrolling can be defined as the act of walking or traveling around an area - network-, at regular intervals, in order to protect or supervise it. The problem of optimizing schedules for patrolling open areas is one that arises in many contexts, and has attracted significant attention from …

Bioabsorbable Atrial Septal Occluder For Percutaneous Closure Of Atrial Septal Defect In Children, Osman Baspinar, Mehmet Kervancioglu, Metin Kilinc, Ahmet Irdem Jan 2012

Bioabsorbable Atrial Septal Occluder For Percutaneous Closure Of Atrial Septal Defect In Children, Osman Baspinar, Mehmet Kervancioglu, Metin Kilinc, Ahmet Irdem

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

The BioSTAR bioabsorbable septal repair implant is a new transcatheter secundum atrial septal defect occlusion device that is absorbed and replaced by healthy native tissue. This retrospective analysis was designed to determine the most significant factors for its successful use in children. From October 2009 through December 2010, 33 children underwent catheterization to close secundum atrial septal defects by means of the BioSTAR. The mean age of the patients was 6.8 ± 3.4 years (range, 2.5-13 yr), and the mean body weight was 22.6 ± 11 kg (range, 11-55 kg). The device was successfully implanted in 91% of patients (30/33). …

A Database For Estimating Organ Dose For Chest And Head Ct Scans For Arbitrary Spectra And Angular Tube Current Modulation, Franco Rupcich, Andreu Badal, Iacovos Kyprianou, Taly Gilat Schmidt Jan 2012

A Database For Estimating Organ Dose For Chest And Head Ct Scans For Arbitrary Spectra And Angular Tube Current Modulation, Franco Rupcich, Andreu Badal, Iacovos Kyprianou, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a database for estimating organ dose in a voxelized patient model for coronary angiography and brain perfusion CT acquisitions with any spectra and angular tube current modulation setting. The database enables organ dose estimation for existing and novel acquisition techniques without requiring Monte Carlo simulations. Methods: The study simulated transport of monoenergetic photons between 5 and 150 keV for 1000 projections over 360◦ through anthropomorphic voxelized female chest and head (0◦ and 30◦ tilt) phantoms and standard head and body CTDI dosimetry cylinders. The simulations resulted in tables of normalized dose …
