Flirting With Erotic Capital: Erotic Capital And Labor Market Earnings Among Women, Isabelle-Christine Beulaygue Jun 2012

Flirting With Erotic Capital: Erotic Capital And Labor Market Earnings Among Women, Isabelle-Christine Beulaygue

Open Access Theses

Extant research indicates a wage premium for attractive individuals and a wage penalty for homelier individuals. In addition, further research has showed that being well-groomed and having a pleasant personality was associated with a wage premium and partially mediated the effects of beauty alone. The purpose of this thesis is to extend this line of research and to examine the impact of erotic capital on annual earnings among young women. Erotic capital is the combination of six personal and inter-personal assets: beauty, sexual attractiveness, social skills, social presentation, liveliness, and sexuality. I constructed an index of erotic capital, incorporating all …

Impacts Of An Invasive Snail (Tarebia Granifera) On Nutrient Cycling In Tropical Streams: The Role Of Riparian Deforestation In Trinidad, West Indies, Jennifer M. Moslemi, Sunny B. Snider, Keeley Macneill, James F. Gilliam, Alexander S. Flecker

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Non-native species and habitat degradation are two major catalysts of environmental change and often occur simultaneously. In freshwater systems, degradation of adjacent terrestrial vegetation may facilitate introduced species by altering resource availability. Here we examine how the presence of intact riparian cover influences the impact of an invasive herbivorous snail, Tarebia granifera, on nitrogen (N) cycling in aquatic systems on the island of Trinidad. We quantified snail biomass, growth, and N excretion in locations where riparian vegetation was present or removed to determine how snail demographics and excretion were related to the condition of the riparian zone. In three …

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ozark Ant Ecology, Robin Michelle Verble Jun 2012

Effects Of Prescribed Fire On Ozark Ant Ecology, Robin Michelle Verble

Theses and Dissertations

Fires are among the most conspicuous disturbances affecting leaf litter communities, and are sources of both direct and indirect insect mortality. Fires historically occurred on the Ozark landscape at high frequencies, and modern forest managers utilize prescribed fire to restore and maintain those ecosystems. I examined fire effects at multiple scales, ranging from post-fire patterns in leaf litter arthropod community structure to responses of individual organisms to heat stress. This dissertation summarizes the history of fire occurrences in Ozark forests of Arkansas. It then unifies the results of four observational and experimental studies designed to assess how Ozark forest ant …

Statistical Mechanics Of The Community Detection Problem: Theory And Application, Dandan Hu Jun 2012

Statistical Mechanics Of The Community Detection Problem: Theory And Application, Dandan Hu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

We study phase transitions in spin glass type systems and in related computational problems. In the current work, we focus on the "community detection" problem when cast in terms of a general Potts spin glass type problem. We report on phase transitions between solvable and unsolvable regimes. Solvable region may further split into easy and hard phases. Spin glass type phase transitions appear at both low and high temperatures. Low temperature transitions correspond to an order by disorder type effect wherein fluctuations render the system ordered or solvable. Separate transitions appear at higher temperatures into a disordered: or an unsolvable) …

Deconstructing Children's Expectations For Psychotherapy: Understanding How Parents Prepare Their Children For Mental Health Treatment, Heather Nix Jun 2012

Deconstructing Children's Expectations For Psychotherapy: Understanding How Parents Prepare Their Children For Mental Health Treatment, Heather Nix

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Little research has investigated the effects of stigma on child psychotherapy. Because parents are a primary factor in determining whether children receive psychotherapy and how therapy progresses, understanding how parental perceptions of psychopathology and psychotherapy are associated with children’s mental health treatment seems to be an important step in investigating how stigma impacts child psychotherapy. Researchers have not closely examined, however, how parents might influence children’s experiences of psychotherapy. To address this topic, the current study examined how parents’ views of psychotherapy were related to how they prepared their children for psychotherapy and how this preparation was related to children’s …

Genome Plasticity And Systems Evolution In Streptomyces, Zhan Zhou, Jianying Gu, Yong-Quan Li, Yufeng Wang

Publications and Research

Background Streptomycetes are filamentous soil-dwelling bacteria. They are best known as the producers of a great variety of natural products such as antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, and anticancer agents and the decomposers of organic substances for carbon recycling. They are also model organisms for the studies of gene regulatory networks, morphological differentiation, and stress response. The availability of sets of genomes from closely related Streptomyces strains makes it possible to assess the mechanisms underlying genome plasticity and systems adaptation. Results We present the results of a comprehensive analysis of the genomes of five Streptomyces species with distinct phenotypes. These streptomycetes have …

that habit is the most important and unifying element in John Dewey's philosophy of

education, (2) Critically investigates habit's fundamental role in his democratic project of

reconstructing culture toward establishing and sustaining the democratic way of life. In

addition to the latter points, …

Water Bathing Alters Threat Perception In Starlings, Bo Brilot, M Bateson Jun 2012

Water Bathing Alters Threat Perception In Starlings, Bo Brilot, M Bateson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The majority of bird taxa perform water bathing, but little is known about the adaptive value of this behaviour. If bathing is important for feather maintenance then birds that have not bathed should have poorer feather condition, compromised escape ability and therefore increased responsiveness to cues of predation. We conducted two experiments examining the behaviour of captive starlings responding to conspecific alarm calls. Birds that had no access to bathing water showed a decreased willingness to feed and increased their vigilance behaviour following an alarm call. We argue that birds denied access to bathing water interpreted an ambiguous cue of …
