Over 4000 flavonoids have been identified so far and among these, many are known to have antitumor activities. The basis of the relationships between chemical structures, type and position of substituent groups and the effects these compounds exert specifically on cancer cells are not completely elucidated. Here we report the differential cytotoxic effects of two flavone isomers on human cancer cells from breast (MCF7, SK-BR-3), colon (Caco-2, HCT116), pancreas (MIA PaCa, Panc 28), and prostate (PC3, LNCaP) that vary in differentiation status and tumorigenic potential. These flavones are derived from plants of the family Asteraceae, genera Gnaphalium and Achyrocline reputed …

Who Teaches Information Literacy Competencies? Report Of A Study Of Faculty, Sharon A. Weiner Jun 2012

Who Teaches Information Literacy Competencies? Report Of A Study Of Faculty, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Information literacy is recognized as an essential competency for educational success. It relates to all disciplines but is not a separate discipline, so it is not clear who takes responsibility for teaching this competency to undergraduates. This is a report of a survey conducted to better understand the extent to which teaching information literacy concepts by faculty occurred in a research university. The results indicated that faculty in the disciplines generally teach information literacy competencies to undergraduate students without collaborating with others on their campus. Many faculty also had the expectation that students know how to avoid plagiarism, find articles …

Diverse microbial communities chronically colonize the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. Pyrosequencing of amplicons for hypervariable regions in the 16S rRNA gene generated taxonomic profiles of bacterial communities for sputum genomic DNA samples from 22 patients during a state of clinical stability (outpatients) and 13 patients during acute exacerbation (inpatients). We employed quantitative PCR (qPCR) to confirm the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus by the pyrosequencing data and human oral microbe identification microarray (HOMIM) analysis to determine the species of the streptococci identified by pyrosequencing. We show that outpatient sputum samples have significantly higher bacterial diversity than inpatients, but …

Availability And Quality Of Vegetation Affects Reproduction Of The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Improved Pastures, Anna Louise Hathaway

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As part of a state-funded Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus Daudin) translocation project, I monitored actively grazed improved pastures to determine if they could serve as suitable recipient sites for the threatened Gopher Tortoise displaced by human development. For cattle ranches to be considered suitable recipient sites females must be able to acquire sufficient energy to produce a clutch of viable eggs, and sufficiently high quality vegetation must be available to support juvenile recruitment into the population. Vegetation surveys were conducted to determine the composition and percent cover of plant species, especially those containing high amounts of nutrients, specifically nitrogen. Resident …

Older Consumers In Malaysia : Spending Pattern, Leisure Activities And Consumption Preferences, Fon Sim Ong

APIAS-TSAO-ILC Symposium for Junior Researchers on Active Ageing 2012

This paper brings consumption activities into the domain of active ageing by proposing that consumption process engages older people physically, socially, and emotionally in line with the concept of active ageing. In Malaysia as in elsewhere in Asia, the number of older adults is growing and the attractiveness of this market segment is expected to grow in the years to come since the newer cohorts of older consumers have higher levels of educational achievement and income, and adopt a lifestyle that is different from their parents. In spite of this, marketers have largely overlooked this market segment.

The focus of …

Reconfigurable Antenna And Rf Circuits Using Multi-Layer Stretchable Conductors, Riaz Ahmed -. Liyakath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The growth of flexible electronics industry has given rise to light-weight, flexible devices which have a wide range of applications such as wearable electronics, flexible sensors, conformal antennas, bio-medical applications, solar cells etc. Though several techniques exist to fabricate flexible devices, the limiting factors have been durability, cost and complexity of the approach. In this research, the focus has been on developing stretchable (flexible) conductors using a multi-layer structure of metal and conductive rubber. The stretchable conductors developed using this approach do not lose electrical connection when subjected to large strains up to 25%. Also, the conductivity of the conductive …

Effects Of Hydrologic Changes And Precipitation On Tree Island Fire Frequency In The Everglades, Florida, Katie Laux Jun 2012

Effects Of Hydrologic Changes And Precipitation On Tree Island Fire Frequency In The Everglades, Florida, Katie Laux

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

This thesis documents a 100-year history of fire in Water Conservation Area 2A (WCA-2A) in the Florida Everglades. Natural fire frequency in this area is not fully understood, and because the region has undergone dramatic anthropogenic changes since the early 1900s due to drainage, it is important to understand how fire frequency has been affected by drainage in order to properly plan restoration activities. Sediment cores taken from tree islands in WCA-2A were processed and examined microscopically for the presence of charcoal. Charcoal concentrations were compared to drainage and precipitation data to determine the impact of these factors on historical …

Facilitation Drives Mortality Patterns Along Succession Gradients Of Aspen-Conifer Forests, W. John Calder, Samuel B. St. Clair Jun 2012

Facilitation Drives Mortality Patterns Along Succession Gradients Of Aspen-Conifer Forests, W. John Calder, Samuel B. St. Clair

Aspen Bibliography

While it is well established that facilitation and competition are important structuring forces in plant communities, a clear understanding of the interactions between them and how they change through the life stages of plants and affect long-term plant community development is lacking. We have observed that conifer seedlings are rarely found growing in meadows but readily establish under adjacent aspen stands, particularly at the base of aspen trees, creating the potential for antagonistic interactions in later life stages. To examine these relationships and their potential consequences on forest community development, we characterized patterns of establishment, regeneration, and overstory mortality of …

Salt Stress Induced Variation In Dna Methylation Pattern And Its Influence On Gene Expression In Contrasting Rice Genotypes, Ratna Karan, Teresa Deleon, Hanamareddy Biradar, Prasanta K. Subudhi

Faculty Publications

Background: Salinity is a major environmental factor limiting productivity of crop plants including rice in which wide range of natural variability exists. Although recent evidences implicate epigenetic mechanisms for modulating the gene expression in plants under environmental stresses, epigenetic changes and their functional consequences under salinity stress in rice are underexplored. DNA methylation is one of the epigenetic mechanisms regulating gene expression in plant's responses to environmental stresses. Better understanding of epigenetic regulation of plant growth and response to environmental stresses may create novel heritable variation for crop improvement. Methodology/Principal Findings: Methylation sensitive amplification polymorphism (MSAP) technique was used to …

A Prior-Free Framework Of Coherent Inference And Its Derivation Of Simple Shrinkage Estimators, David R. Bickel Jun 2012

A Prior-Free Framework Of Coherent Inference And Its Derivation Of Simple Shrinkage Estimators, David R. Bickel

COBRA Preprint Series

The reasoning behind uses of confidence intervals and p-values in scientific practice may be made coherent by modeling the inferring statistician or scientist as an idealized intelligent agent. With other things equal, such an agent regards a hypothesis coinciding with a confidence interval of a higher confidence level as more certain than a hypothesis coinciding with a confidence interval of a lower confidence level. The agent uses different methods of confidence intervals conditional on what information is available. The coherence requirement means all levels of certainty of hypotheses about the parameter agree with the same distribution of certainty over parameter …

Preparation And Characterization Of Prussian Blue Modified Nanoelectrode, Wei Wang, Bao-Fa Su, Dong-Ping Zhan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Pt nanoelectrodes were fabricated by using a laser-based pipet puller and the recessed nanoelectrodes were prepared by etching of disk Pt nanoelectrodes wtih high frequency ac voltage. Prussian blue microcrystal was synthesized electrochemically on the both disk and recessed Pt nanoelectrodes. The strength of mechanical adhesion for the Prussian blue microcrystal on the nanoelectrode was enhanced. A novel method for the controllable synthesis of single particle is proposed, which has potential applications in modified electrodes and single particle electrocatalysis.

On The Molecular Mechanism Of Electron Transfer Of Cytochrome C Modulated By Gold Nanoparticles In Nano-Sandwich Architecture, Shou-Rui Lin, Li-Xu Wang, Xiu-E Jiang, Li-Ping Guo Jun 2012

On The Molecular Mechanism Of Electron Transfer Of Cytochrome C Modulated By Gold Nanoparticles In Nano-Sandwich Architecture, Shou-Rui Lin, Li-Xu Wang, Xiu-E Jiang, Li-Ping Guo

Journal of Electrochemistry

The effects of adsorbed gold nanoparticles on the surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) difference spectra of redox-induced cytochrome (Cyt) c in AuNPs/Cyt c/Au sandwich architecture were monitored by SEIRA spectroscopy. The results indicated that the intensity of SEIRA difference spectrum for the vibration of the heme was significantly increased due to the adsorption of gold nanoparticles on the Cyt c. This was induced by the electron transfer between the heme and the gold nanoparticles, which also promoted electron transfer of adsorbed protein. This study suggested a new technique for optimizing the electrochemical property of adsorbed protein.

AIMS AND HYPOTHESIS: Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from beta-cells is a tightly regulated process that requires calcium flux to trigger exocytosis of insulin-containing vesicles. Regulation of calcium handling in beta-cells remains incompletely understood. Gem, a member of the RGK (Rad/Gem/Kir) family regulates calcium channel handling in other cell types, and Gem over-expression inhibits insulin release in insulin-secreting Min6 cells. The aim of this study was to explore the role of Gem in insulin secretion. We hypothesised that Gem may regulate insulin secretion and thus affect glucose tolerance in vivo.

METHODS: Gem-deficient mice were generated and their metabolic phenotype characterised by in …

Protonization Of Amino Functional Groups Confined In Nanochannels, Hong-Li Gao, Kai-Lin Zhou, Chen Wang, Su-Juan Li, Hui Zhang, Xing-Hua Xia

Journal of Electrochemistry

Protonization process is the key step of acid-base reaction and occurs in many biological processes. Study of the protonization process of molecules and/or functional groups in confined conditions would assist understanding in the acid-base theory and confinement effect of biomolecules. In this paper, we developed a novel approach to study protonization of functional groups in porous anodic alumina array nanochannels by measuring the flux of electrochemical active probes using an Au film electrochemical detector sputtered at the end of the nanochannels. The protonization status of the surface functional groups in nanochannels can change the surface charges and further modulate the …

Examining Family Functioning In Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Through Kinetic Family Drawings, Christiana Lajudice Jun 2012

Examining Family Functioning In Pediatric Bipolar Disorder Through Kinetic Family Drawings, Christiana Lajudice

Theses

Pediatric bipolar disorder (PBD) is a mental illness that affects the daily lives of children and adults, particularly their family functioning. Past research has found significant differences in maternal-child warmth and disciplinary warmth, maternal and paternal hostility and tension, family cohesion and adaptability, and minor conflicts between children with PBD and comparison groups. Typical methods for assessing family functioning involve objective scales, questionnaires, and interviews. The projective measure, the Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD), has been utilized with other groups including populations of abused and maltreated children, and children with serious medical illnesses, but has yet to be utilized with the …
