Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie
Feeding Ecology And Life History Strategies Of White-Faced Capuchin Monkeys, Elizabeth C. Eadie
Anthropology ETDs
Dietary niches have widespread effects on individuals life histories, behaviors, and morphologies. Capuchin monkeys inhabit a complex dietary niche that often entails hunting of relatively large vertebrate prey, tool-use, and extraction of embedded resources that other closely related and sympatric species do not exploit. In this dissertation I examine, a) how juvenile capuchins overcome the challenges of reliance on a difficult-to-acquire diet, b) at what age juveniles achieve maximum foraging return rates for difficult-to-acquire foods, and c) what nutritional benefits capuchins obtain from exploitation of these foods. In the process of addressing these questions I test two prominent hypotheses regarding …

Industrial Revolution brought about fundamental changes in the essence of design. These changes occurred through shaping Modern thought and were also a response to needs of modern world. Prominent Thoughts in Modern Design led the academics toward more concentration on Engineering and Industrial Production. This direction reduced the relation between designers and users, including also contextual factors. Consequences of this problem was resulted in anti-functional movements and also post-modern thoughts , in which directions such as emotional design, Cultural design were defined and the direction was changed toward mass production and regional production. Production in a regional way needs a …

Car styling and features play an important role in an automobile’s design and how consumers perceive it. The goal of this study is to propose a methodology to assist automotive designers in understanding consumers’ affective responses to green vehicles' form design, in order to further develop the shape and styling of green cars. Given the increase of environmental awareness among consumers and the current fierce competition in the automotive industry, it is very important for automobile makers to effectively consider consumer desires for the form features of green vehicles. To achieve this, we performed Support Vector Regression (SVR) to incorporate …
Fighting Fear Of Blood Test With Secret Powers: Using Game Design As A New Method Of Inquiry In Design Research, Eva Knutz
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Non-verbal forms of interactions as found in play and gaming has not been investigated as a method that can actually communicate or express an emotional state. In this paper we are using the design of a computer game (called the Child Patient Game) designed especially for hospitalized children as Design Case. We are demonstrating how children’s interaction with a computer game is used as a method for letting children express their emotions towards a hospital examination. In order to make sense of the different elements that constitute a Playful Experience this paper makes use of the Playful Experience Framework. This …

Design Case Studies: Never Let The Facts Get In The Way Of A Good Story!, Seymour Roworth-Stokes
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper argues that the primary advantage of the case study, its ability to reveal insight into ‘real-life’ contemporary phenomena (the here and now) set against critical incidents, happenings or events over time (cause and effect), could be undermined by a lack of methodological rigor and sound empiricism in design research. Often the ‘one off’ is reported as a ‘case’ without the critical insight or analytical discourse necessary to derive sound theory from practice. A systematic audit of design case studies in four of the leading design research journals has been undertaken along with a detailed analysis of the type, …
Experimental Design In The Cultural Space Interior Design Studio: Linear Programmatic Versus Holistic Mind-Mapping Approach, Diana Thamrin
Experimental Design In The Cultural Space Interior Design Studio: Linear Programmatic Versus Holistic Mind-Mapping Approach, Diana Thamrin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Since its development into an independent university-based programme, interior design has drawn from the arts and engineering disciplines in the formulation of its pedagogical approach. This paper discusses interior design studio pedagogy at a private university in Indonesia, in which design methodologies in interior design studios have over the years employed the common sequential steps in design developed from architecture studios, interior design text books and professional experiences. While this linear programmatic approach has yielded logical products that could be applied to pragmatic spaces like residences and offices, they are insufficient in accommodating ambiguous and complex ideas essential in cultural …

Individual Differences In Delay Discounting Under Acute Stress: The Role Of Trait Perceived Stress, Karolina M. Lempert, Anthony J. Porcelli, Mauricio R. Delgado, Elizabeth Tricomi
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Delay discounting refers to the reduction of the value of a future reward as the delay to that reward increases. The rate at which individuals discount future rewards varies as a function of both individual and contextual differences, and high delay discounting rates have been linked with problematic behaviors, including drug abuse and gambling. The current study investigated the effects of acute anticipatory stress on delay discounting, while considering two important factors: individual perceptions of stress and whether the stressful situation is future-focused or present-focused. Half of the participants experienced acute stress by anticipating giving a videotaped speech. This stress …
Development Of In Vitro Tissue Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics In Complex Geometries For Coronary Stent Testing, Robert Dalton Chavez
Development Of In Vitro Tissue Engineered Blood Vessel Mimics In Complex Geometries For Coronary Stent Testing, Robert Dalton Chavez
Master's Theses
Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and occurs when plaque occludes coronary arteries. Coronary stents, which may be used to treat coronary occlusions, are small metal tubes that are implanted in coronary arteries to restore blood flow. After stent implantation, endothelial cells grow over the stent so that blood contacts the endothelial cells instead of the stent surface; this event is known as re-endothelialization. Re-endothelialization prevents blood from clotting on the stent surface and is a good predictor of stent success. Blood vessel mimics (BVMs) are in vitro tissue engineered models of human …
Characterization Of Tight Junction Formation In An In-Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Michael Robert Machado
Characterization Of Tight Junction Formation In An In-Vitro Model Of The Blood-Brain Barrier, Michael Robert Machado
Master's Theses
Active and passive transport of substances between the microcirculation in the brain and the central nervous system is regulated by the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB). This barrier allows for chronic and acute modulation of the CNS microenvironment, and protects the brain from potentially noxious compounds carried in the circulatory system. In-vitro modeling of the BBB has become the target of much research over the past decade, as there are many unanswered questions regarding modulations in the permeability of this barrier. Additionally, the development of a practical and inexpensive model of the BBB would facilitate a much more efficient drug development process. …

Development And Characterization Of An In-House Custom Bioreactor For The Cultivation Of A Tissue Engineered Blood-Brain Barrier, Amin Hadi Mirzaaghaeian
Master's Theses
The development of treatments for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease begins by understanding what these diseases affect and the consequences of further manifestation. One particular region where these diseases can produce substantial problems is the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is the selective diffusion barrier between the circulating blood and the brain. The barrier’s main function is to maintain CNS homeostasis and protect the brain from the extracellular environment. The progression of BBB research has advanced to the point where many have modeled the BBB in vitro with aims of further characterizing and testing the barrier. Particularly, …

Pollination Ecology Of Agave Palmeri In New Mexico, And Landscape Use Of Leptonycteris Nivalis In Relation To Agaves, Angela E. England
Biology ETDs
Where animals spend time can provide important clues to their ecological needs, but this information is very difficult to obtain for small volant animals. The research described in Chapter 1 was an attempt to discern how L. nivalis utilize the landscape in relation to the distribution of Agave havardiana in Big Bend National Park, Texas. I found that although the landscape use of Leptonycteris nivalis is centered on habitat with high concentrations of blooming A.havardiana, it is not restricted to those areas, and furthermore adults and juveniles may differ in their behavior. Adult females may remain near food sources in …
The Effect Of Increased Growth Temperature On Mid-Day And Mid-Night Co2 Fluxes In Populus Deltoids, Rachel Zulick
The Effect Of Increased Growth Temperature On Mid-Day And Mid-Night Co2 Fluxes In Populus Deltoids, Rachel Zulick
Biology ETDs
As global temperatures rise, understanding the effects of increased temperature on daily carbon dioxide fluxes is necessary to predict changes to the global carbon cycle. Using tunable diode laser spectroscopy, I measured CO2 fluxes and changes in isotopic composition of root respiration, leaf respiration and photosynthesis over a 12-hour night to day transition. I found that after a 10°C increase in growth temperature for four weeks, root CO2 fluxes acclimated to the higher temperature (i.e. they were not significantly different from controls). In contrast, both photosynthesis and respiration of leaves were higher at the elevated growth temperature. Though the root …

Mechanism And Control Of Beef Toughening During Retail Display In High Oxygen Modified Atmosphere Packages, Lasika S. Senaratne
Mechanism And Control Of Beef Toughening During Retail Display In High Oxygen Modified Atmosphere Packages, Lasika S. Senaratne
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This research was conducted to elucidate the mechanism and factors (diet, aging time, antioxidant level, and retail display time) affecting beef toughening in retail display under high oxygen atmosphere packages (HiOx-MAP; 80% O2 and 20% CO2). In the first study, effects of HiOx-MAP on color and lipid stability of beef m. longissimus lumborum steaks from yearlings fed corn or 30% wet distillers grains plus soluble (WDGS) diets supplemented with (150 mg/kg) or without (0 mg/kg) AGRADO-PLUS (AG) antioxidants were studied. Steak color-shelf life was extended (P < 0.0001) by HiOx-MAP compared to oxygen permeable film packages (PVC-OW). Steaks from corn+AG-supplemented cattle had (P ≤ 0.05) less discoloration and lower lipid oxidation levels …
Exile On Main Street: Competing Traditions And Due Process Dissent, Colin Starger
Exile On Main Street: Competing Traditions And Due Process Dissent, Colin Starger
All Faculty Scholarship
Everybody loves great dissents. Professors teach them, students learn from them, and journalists quote them. Yet legal scholars have long puzzled over how dissents actually impact the development of doctrine. Recent work by notable empirical scholars proposes to measure the influence of dissents by reference to their subsequent citation in case law. This Article challenges the theoretical basis for this empirical approach and argues that it fails to account for the profound influence that uncited dissents have exerted in law. To overcome this gap in the empirical approach, this Article proposes an alternative method that permits analysis of contextual and …
Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose
Beyond Post-Modernity In Mathematics Education, Ole Skovsmose
The Mathematics Enthusiast
A radical form of postmodernity is presented with reference to Nietzsche’s ideas with respect to truth, knowledge, sciences, progress, democracy, and ethical values in general. Thereafter is presented Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge. This brings us forward to the notion of genealogy, which is a defining idea for the postmodern conception of critique. However, it is emphasised that a critique can address the generativity of mathematical rationality by considering mathematics-based fabrications. Finally, imagination is presented as yet another feature of a critical enterprise. It is illustrated how such a three dimensional critical enterprise is relevant for both mathematics and mathematics education. …

Demographics Of Self-Selected Participants In Mathematical Tracks In Swedish Upper Secondary School, Linda Mattsson
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This study investigates the three demographic factors gender, geographical origin and parents educational level among self-selected students in mathematical tracks in Swedish Upper Secondary School (n=147). Comparisons are made, through statistical tests of significance, with corresponding student distributions on the closely related Natural Science program (n = 1528). Data is obtained from Statistics Sweden. Results confirm that females are under-represented in mathematical tracks (p<0,01) and that parents of students in mathematical tracks have higher educational level than parents of students in the comparison group (p<0,05). Results do not show that students with foreign background are underrepresented in mathematical tracks, but raise questions about under-representation of Swedish students. Possible implications of these findings for these and similar programs are discussed.

Silicon: A Benefit Or A Detriment To Plant Physiology For Creeping Bent (Agrostis Stolonifera L.), Sheep's Fescue (Festuca Ovina L.) And Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium Perenne L.)?, Nicola Warburton, Jo Bayley, Stuart Lane
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Silicon shows alleviatory effects in many previous studies involving abiotic and biotic stress factors. A germination trial for the optimum concentration of ERA-3 initially showed an optimum dilution factor of 2,500:1 (Distilled water: ERA-3). Over one hundred individuals of each species of Agrostis stolonifera L., Festuca ovina L. and Lolium Perenne L. were all grown for eight weeks in closed hydroponic systems, in warmed greenhouse conditions (15°C). When solely tested, the effects on all three species showed contrasting results to what was expected. In all three selected species, silicon significantly reduced the shoot area, and photosynthetic efficiency (measured as Fv/Fm …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Introduction. To evaluate the efficacy of epoetin-α prior to revision total knee arthroplasty, we hypothesized that epoetin-α will reduce blood transfusion. Methods. Eighty-one patients were compared in this retrospective review; twenty-eight patients received our dosing regimen. All patients were mildly anemic. Epoetin-α to control (1 : 2) patient matching occurred so that one of two attending surgeons, gender, BMI, complexity of surgery, ASA score, and age were similar between groups. The clinical triggers for blood transfusion during or after the procedure were determined based on peri- and postoperative hemoglobin levels, ASA score, and/or clinical symptoms consistent with anemia. Blood salvage …

Sculpture is how I bring to life the dark corners of my mind. There have always been images of creatures, geology, and botanical life swirling around my head. Images that often include spires of exoskeleton, creeping tendrils searching for sustenance, or something that moves in an unnatural way. After years of envisioning and automatically sketching out these "things" it is beginning to get a bit crowded in there. It was time to excise this world in my mind and bring it into existence through my hands.
Using many different materials, including plaster, wire, paper mache, epoxy, urethane resins, many different …

Identity Of A Single Black Woman, Daphne Stevenson
All Student Theses and Dissertations
There is not much literature that speaks to the identity of singles, considering this is a growing group in our society today. Singleness may be by choice or by circumstance; nevertheless, this is a group worth investigating. Over the course of the last decade there have been various media programs that depict or explore the idea of singleness and the challenges singles may encounter maneuvering through the world of coupledom. There has been much dialog in prominent mainstream mediums as the Washington Post and ABC’s Nightline concerning the plight of single black women the decreasing number of marriages in the …
Herding Immunity: Can U.S. Public Health Fight Off Disease Using Canada's Voluntary Vaccination System?, Tara Sheoran
Herding Immunity: Can U.S. Public Health Fight Off Disease Using Canada's Voluntary Vaccination System?, Tara Sheoran
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note advocates for the adoption of uniform federal vaccination laws in the United States, allowing only medical exemptions, to effectively protect public health. It references the Jacobson v. Massachusetts case, which upheld states' authority to mandate vaccinations, and contrasts the U.S. system with Canada's voluntary approach. The author argues that cultural differences in the U.S. make a voluntary system infeasible and emphasizes the need to balance individual rights with collective safety to prevent disease resurgence and maintain herd immunity.

Displays Of Personal Adornent And Body Decoration By Nineteenth Century Lakota (Sioux) Tribes: A Costly Signaling Model, Michelle L. Night Pipe
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Throughout the nineteenth century, Lakota (Sioux) individuals devoted an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources to the production and purchase of lavish clothing, headdresses, and accessories. These items seemingly lack any practical value, making them difficult to account for in economic terms. Costly signaling theory, however, predicts that the costs of the production of personal adornment and body decoration may be offset by the accumulation of prestige. For Lakota men, prestige translated into higher status, membership in warrior and headmen's societies, leadership opportunities, marital opportunities, and ultimately, differential reproductive success. Lakota women also garnered prestige based on the quality …

Independent of the stage of economic development, entrepreneurship plays a significant role for the expansion, job creation and overall economic health within a country. As a leading international indicator of entrepreneurial activity around the world, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) provides valuable insight into the state of entrepreneurship within and across developed and developing economies. Knowing the entrepreneurial aspirations of country’s residents is particularly relevant in Singapore’s innovation-driven economy given that the country’s prosperity depends largely on the economic activities of its citizens. We describe the key definitions and terms used in the GEM as well as the stages of …

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumour Of Infancy: A Rare Brain Tumour Of Childhood, Muhammad Babar Khan, Delvene Soares, Muhammad Zubair Tahir, Rajesh Kumar, Khurram Minhas, Muhammad Ehsan Bari
Medical College Documents
Melanotic neuroectodermal tumour of infancy is a rare, mostly benign but locally aggressive tumour of neural crest cell
origin occurring in infants. The most commonly affected anatomic site is the maxilla. Such tumours of the brain and skull are very rare. We present the case of an 8 months old baby girl whose presenting complaint was a swelling in the scalp for 6 months. She was otherwise asymptomatic. CT imaging confirmed the presence of an osteolytic tumour in the anterior parasagittal skull with dural involvement. The tumour was surgically excised enbloc. The patient has been well at 2 years follow-up …
