Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley Jul 2012

Modeling A Solar-Heated Anaerobic Digester For The Developing World Using System Dynamics, Johanna Bentley

Theses

Much of the developing world lacks access to a dependable source of energy. Agricultural societies such as Mozambique and Papua New Guinea could sustain a reliable energy source through the microbacterial decomposition of animal and crop waste. Anaerobic digestion produces methane, which can be used directly for heating, cooking, and lighting. Adding a solar component to the digester provides a catalyst for bacteria activity, accelerating digestion and increasing biogas production. Using methane decreases the amount of energy expended by collecting and preparing firewood, eliminates hazardous health effects linked to inhalation of particles, and provides energy close to where it is …

A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Adherent Leukocytes On Secondary Recruitment, Dhananjay Subramaniam Jul 2012

A Computational Study Of The Effects Of Adherent Leukocytes On Secondary Recruitment, Dhananjay Subramaniam

Theses

Leukocyte rolling is known to be mediated by the selectin family of adhesion molecules and their corresponding ligands and is characterized by the formation and breakage of receptor-ligand bonds. Selectin mediated rolling is associated with the initial stages of the leukocyte adhesion cascade (LAC) in which the cell passes through several stages including chemo-attraction, rolling adhesion, tight adhesion and transmigration before moving out of the circulatory system towards the site of injury. This thesis studies the initial stages of the leukocyte adhesion cascade through a direct numerical simulation based on boundary element techniques. Besides, cell deformation during rolling is believed …

Computational Modeling Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Nathaniel Lee Miller Jul 2012

Computational Modeling Of Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes, Nathaniel Lee Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Ab initio self-consistent field (SCF) molecular orbital calculations were performed employing various basis sets to computationally predict methods to functionalize and solubilize carbon nanotubes. The structure and Restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) or “total” energies of functionalized nanotubes of various configurations were determined via theoretical calculations. Total energies were used to determine preferences for adsorption on nanotube sur-faces. Various diameter carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were tested to determine where a transition from a non-wrapping to a wrapping approach was found likely to occur as a function of diameter. Further refinements to this method could be used to explore additional interactions as nanotube diameter …

Plasmodium Falciparum Ssb Tetramer Wraps Single-Stranded Dna With Similar Topology But Opposite Polarity To E. Coli Ssb, Edwin Antony, Elizabeth A. Weiland, Sergey Korolev, Timothy M. Lohman Jul 2012

Plasmodium Falciparum Ssb Tetramer Wraps Single-Stranded Dna With Similar Topology But Opposite Polarity To E. Coli Ssb, Edwin Antony, Elizabeth A. Weiland, Sergey Korolev, Timothy M. Lohman

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Single-stranded DNA binding (SSB) proteins play central roles in genome maintenance in all organisms. Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of malaria, encodes an SSB protein that localizes to the apicoplast and likely functions in the replication and maintenance of its genome. P. falciparum SSB (Pf-SSB) shares a high degree of sequence homology with bacterial SSB proteins but differs in the composition of its C-terminus, which interacts with more than a dozen other proteins in Escherichia coli SSB (Ec-SSB). Using sedimentation methods, we show that Pf-SSB forms a stable homo-tetramer alone and when bound to …

Plasmodium Falciparum Ssb Tetramer Binds Single-Stranded Dna Only In A Fully Wrapped Mode, Edwin Antony, Alexander G. Kozlov, Binh Nguyen, Timothy M. Lohman Jul 2012

Plasmodium Falciparum Ssb Tetramer Binds Single-Stranded Dna Only In A Fully Wrapped Mode, Edwin Antony, Alexander G. Kozlov, Binh Nguyen, Timothy M. Lohman

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The tetrameric Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) binding protein (Ec-SSB) functions in DNA metabolism by binding to ssDNA and interacting directly with numerous DNA repair and replication proteins. Ec-SSB tetramers can bind ssDNA in multiple DNA binding modes that differ in the extent of ssDNA wrapping. Here, we show that the structurally similar SSB protein from the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum (Pf-SSB) also binds tightly to ssDNA but does not display the same number of ssDNA binding modes as Ec-SSB, binding ssDNA exclusively in fully wrapped complexes with site sizes of 52–65 nt/tetramer. Pf …

Experimental Evidence For The Interplay Of Exogenous And Endogenous Factors On The Movement Ecology Of A Migrating Songbird, Emily B. Cohen, Frank R. Moore, Richard A. Fischer Jul 2012

Experimental Evidence For The Interplay Of Exogenous And Endogenous Factors On The Movement Ecology Of A Migrating Songbird, Emily B. Cohen, Frank R. Moore, Richard A. Fischer

Faculty Publications

Movement patterns during songbird migration remain poorly understood despite their expected fitness consequences in terms of survival, energetic condition and timing of migration that will carry over to subsequent phases of the annual cycle. We took an experimental approach to test hypotheses regarding the influence of habitat, energetic condition, time of season and sex on the hour-by-hour, local movement decisions of a songbird during spring stopover. To simulate arrival of nocturnal migrants at unfamiliar stopover sites, we translocated and continuously tracked migratory red-eyed vireos (Vireo olivaceus) throughout spring stopover with and without energetic reserves that were released in two replicates …

Persons With Multiple Sclerosis Show Altered Joint Kinetics During Walking After Participating In Elliptical Exercise, Jessie M. Huisinga, Kendra K. Schmid, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou Jul 2012

Persons With Multiple Sclerosis Show Altered Joint Kinetics During Walking After Participating In Elliptical Exercise, Jessie M. Huisinga, Kendra K. Schmid, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) experience abnormal gait patterns and reduced physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine if an elliptical exercise intervention for patients with MS would change joint kinetics during gait toward healthy control values. Gait analysis was performed on patients with MS (n = 24) before and after completion of 15 sessions of supervised exercise. Joint torques and powers were calculated, while also using walking velocity as a covariate, to determine the effects of elliptical exercise on lower extremity joint kinetics during gait. Results show that elliptical exercise significantly altered joint torques at the …

Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease Exhibit Reduced Joint Powers Compared To Velocity-Matched Controls, Shane Wurdeman, Panagiotis Koutakis, Sara Myers, Jason Johanning, Iraklis Pipinos, Nicholas Stergiou Jul 2012

Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease Exhibit Reduced Joint Powers Compared To Velocity-Matched Controls, Shane Wurdeman, Panagiotis Koutakis, Sara Myers, Jason Johanning, Iraklis Pipinos, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

Previous studies have shown major deficits in gait for individuals with peripheral arterial disease before and after the onset of pain. However, these studies did not have subjects ambulate at similar velocities and potential exists that the differences in joint powers may have been due to differences in walking velocity. The purpose of this study was to examine the joint moments and powers of peripheral arterial disease limbs for subjects walking at similar self-selected walking velocities as healthy controls prior to onset of any symptoms. Results revealed peripheral arterial disease patients have reduced peak hip power absorption in midstance ( …

Closely Paired Flowers Produce Single Fruit, W. John Hayden Jul 2012

Closely Paired Flowers Produce Single Fruit, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

Perhaps one of the most striking features of partridge berry (Mitchella repens), the 2012 VNPS Wildflower of the Year, is its closely paired flowers that yield a single berry fruit (figure 1). That these fruits are double structures, formed by pairs of flowers, is revealed in the presence of two discrete rings of five sepals each on the fruit apex, or in some cases, by a single ring of 10 sepals. Viewed in isolation, without context, the nature of these double fruits may seem perplexing, but as in so many things, a comparative perspective helps to make sense …

Surface Modification Of Titanium Implant Influenced To Osseointegration, Kritirat Kiatsirirote Jul 2012

Surface Modification Of Titanium Implant Influenced To Osseointegration, Kritirat Kiatsirirote

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

Titanium and its alloy are the most widely used material for dental implants as these materials are highly biocompatible and possess excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, their application as implant materials is lack of bioactive behavior, on the other words, they cannot form a direct mechanically stable bond between their surface and the surrounding bone tissue. To overcome this limitation, research efforts have focused on modifying implant surface to improve the biological response. Several techniques of surface treatments have been developed and applied to promote the mechanism of osseointegration with faster and stronger bone formation. This article is …

A civil servant selection attributes transaction cost. Aim of this conceptual paper is to explain behavior of transaction cost payment from perspective theory of the rationale of economics. This study was conducted by understanding various theories regarding a phenomena of transaction cost payment. This study revealed transaction cost payment as typical self interest and utility maximization (neo-classic rationality), to behave as Al-Nafs Al-Ammarah (Islamic rationality). The transaction cost payment was encouraged by perception, understanding and prior experiences (Keynes rationality), environment (psychology rationality). However, there was a limited scope of information for transaction cost payment (bounded rationality).

Energy Consumption In Networks On Chip : Efficiency And Scaling, George Bezerra Jul 2012

Energy Consumption In Networks On Chip : Efficiency And Scaling, George Bezerra

Computer Science ETDs

Computer architecture design is in a new era where performance is increased by replicating processing cores on a chip rather than making CPUs larger and faster. This design strategy is motivated by the superior energy efficiency of the multi-core architecture compared to the traditional monolithic CPU. If the trend continues as expected, the number of cores on a chip is predicted to grow exponentially over time as the density of transistors on a die increases. A major challenge to the efficiency of multi-core chips is the energy used for communication among cores over a Network on Chip (NoC). As the …

The Pseudomonas Syringae Type Iii Secretion System: The Translocator Proteins, Their Secretion, And The Restriction Of Translocation By The Plant Immune System, Emerson Crabill

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pseudomonas syringae is a Gram-negative plant pathogen whose virulence is dependent upon its type III secretion system (T3SS), a nanosyringe that facilitates translocation, or injection, of type III effector (T3E) proteins into eukaryotic cells. The primary function of P. syringae T3E proteins is suppression of plant immunity. Bacterial proteins called translocators form a translocon that forms a pore in the host plasma membrane which is traversed by T3Es. HrpK1, a putative P. syringae translocator, is a type III-secreted protein important for virulence and T3E injection, but not secretion of T3Es. Harpins are a group of proteins specific to plant pathogens …

An Invasive Riparian Tree Reduces Stream Ecosystem Efficiency Via A Recalcitrant Organic Matter Subsidy, Madeline M. Mineau, Colden V. Baxter, Amy Marcarelli, G. Wayne Minshall Jul 2012

An Invasive Riparian Tree Reduces Stream Ecosystem Efficiency Via A Recalcitrant Organic Matter Subsidy, Madeline M. Mineau, Colden V. Baxter, Amy Marcarelli, G. Wayne Minshall

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

A disturbance, such as species invasion, can alter the exchange of materials and organisms between ecosystems, with potential consequences for the function of both ecosystems. Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia) is an exotic tree invading riparian corridors in the western United States, and may alter stream organic matter budgets by increasing allochthonous litter and by reducing light via shading, in turn decreasing in-stream primary production. We used a before-after invasion comparison spanning 35 years to show that Russian olive invasion increased allochthonous litter nearly 25-fold to an invaded vs. a control reach of a stream, and we found that …

Confronting The Wizard Of Oz: National Security, Expertise, And Secrecy, David Cole Jul 2012

Confronting The Wizard Of Oz: National Security, Expertise, And Secrecy, David Cole

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Aziz Rana’s account of the takeover of American national security by experts, and of the public’s acceptance of that state of affairs, offers an important and novel perspective on what ails us in national security today. In this Comment, I suggest that while Rana is correct to identify our deference to experts as a central aspect of the problem, the problem is more complicated. First, the phenomenon of elite control over foreign and security policy questions is not new, but likely dates back to the founding—when elites ruled not based on expertise but on the basis of status, class, and …

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, G Livadiotis, Saber Elaydi Jul 2012

General Allee Effect In Two-Species Population Biology, G Livadiotis, Saber Elaydi

Mathematics Faculty Research

The main objective of this work is to present a general framework for the notion of the strong Allee effect in population models, including competition, mutualistic, and predator–prey models. The study is restricted to the strong Allee effect caused by an inter-specific interaction. The main feature of the strong Allee effect is that the extinction equilibrium is an attractor. We show how a ‘phase space core’ of three or four equilibria is sufficient to describe the essential dynamics of the interaction between two species that are prone to the Allee effect. We will introduce the notion of semistability in planar …

Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2) is a chromatin-binding protein that mediates transcriptional regulation, and is highly abundant in brain. The nature of its binding to reconstituted templates has been well characterized in vitro. However, its interactions with native chromatin are less understood. Here we show that MeCP2 displays a distinct distribution within fractionated chromatin from various tissues and cell types. Artificially induced global changes in DNA methylation by 3-aminobenzamide or 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine, do not significantly affect the distribution or amount of MeCP2 in HeLa S3 or 3T3 cells. Most MeCP2 in brain is chromatin-bound and localized within highly nuclease-accessible regions. We …

Analysis Of The Fish Community On Tidal-Freshwater Constructed Reefs, Briana Langford Jul 2012

Analysis Of The Fish Community On Tidal-Freshwater Constructed Reefs, Briana Langford

Theses and Dissertations

Constructed reefs are used successfully in marine systems to enhance spawning habitat; this study examines the effectiveness of constructed reefs in a tidal-freshwater river. Fish abundance, species diversity and richness, residency, water column position, reproductive guilds, and feeding guilds were analyzed on two constructed reefs in the tidal-freshwater James River and compared to silted regions representing the primary substrate in the river. Reefs were sampled using hydroacoustics, electroshocking, gillnetting, trawling, and egg mats. The constructed reefs had a greater proportion of fish that broadcast spawn over hard substrate and a trend of more overall individual, residential, and demersal fish. The …
