The Relationship Between Cancer-Related Fatigue And Upper Extremity Function In Breast Cancer Survivors, Meryl Marger Picard

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and arm morbidity constitute the two most common symptom complexes impacting breast cancer survivors (BCS) following surgery and adjuvant treatment, but these multifaceted entities have traditionally been researched as if they were separately occurring events in the survivor’s recovery. Objective: This study examined the relationship between breast cancer survivors’ perceptions of CRF and upper extremity function one to six years post-diagnosis. The study further investigated the impact of multiple adjuvant therapies, node dissection procedures, caring for dependent children, and physical aspects of employment on CRF and upper extremity function. Methods: One hundred fifty-eight BCS responded to …

Unitas Via Diversitas. Can The Common European Sales Law Harmonize Through Diversity?, Gary Low Jul 2012

Unitas Via Diversitas. Can The Common European Sales Law Harmonize Through Diversity?, Gary Low

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The proposed Regulation for a Common European Sales Law (CESL),1 unveiled on 11 October 2011, marks the opening legislative salvo on the future of European contract law. Besides critique from private lawyers on the substantive content therein,2 the legality of the CESL under Union law may be called into question.3 The CESL cites Article 114 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) as its legal basis." In so doing, it goes against the grain of received wisdom: virtually all the studies on the subject ruled out the use of Article 114 TFEU in favour of Article …

Short Lesson Plan Associated With Increased Acceptance Of Evolutionary Theory And Potential Change In Three Alternate Conceptions Of Macroevolution In Undergraduate Students, Joel K. Abraham, Kathryn E. Perez, Nicholas Downey, Jon C. Herron, Eli Meir Jul 2012

Short Lesson Plan Associated With Increased Acceptance Of Evolutionary Theory And Potential Change In Three Alternate Conceptions Of Macroevolution In Undergraduate Students, Joel K. Abraham, Kathryn E. Perez, Nicholas Downey, Jon C. Herron, Eli Meir

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Undergraduates commonly harbor alternate conceptions about evolutionary biology; these alternate conceptions often persist, even after intensive instruction, and may influence acceptance of evolution. We interviewed undergraduates to explore their alternate conceptions about macroevolutionary patterns and designed a 2-h lesson plan to present evidence that life has evolved. We identified three alternate conceptions during our interviews: that newly derived traits would be more widespread in extant species than would be ancestral traits, that evolution proceeds solely by anagenesis, and that lineages must become more complex over time. We also attempted to measure changes in the alternate conceptions and levels of acceptance …

Were Multiple Stressors A "Perfect Storm" For Northern Gulf Of Mexico Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In 2011?, Ruth H. Carmichael, William M. Graham, Allen Aven, Graham Worthy, Stephan D. Howden

Faculty Publications

An unusual number of near term and neonatal bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) mortalities occurred in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) in 2011, during the first calving season after two well documented environmental perturbations; sustained cold weather in 2010 and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWHOS). Preceding the stranding event, large volumes of cold freshwater entered the nGOM due to unusually large snowmelt on the adjacent watershed, providing a third potential stressor. We consider the possibility that this extreme cold and freshwater event contributed to the pattern of perinatal dolphin strandings along the nGOM coast. During the 4-month period starting …

Preservation Of Methanogenic Cultures To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion, Ujwal H. Bhattad Jul 2012

Preservation Of Methanogenic Cultures To Enhance Anaerobic Digestion, Ujwal H. Bhattad

Dissertations (1934 -)

The use of anaerobic biotechnology is increasing as a sustainable process to treat various organic wastes. Methanogens convert organic COD into CH4 and play the key role to drive thermodynamically unfavorable biochemical fermentation reactions and keep the digestion process steady and efficient. Progressive understanding of anaerobic microbiology with digester functionality may help to develop efficient, customized methanogenic cultures to enhance anaerobic bioprocesses. Preservation of methanogenic cultures via drying would be a cost-effective option for research and practical applications. However, preservation of methanogenic cultures is challenging due to methanogen sensitivity to O2 toxicity and drying, and very limited work is reported …

Naturalized Panpsychism: An Alternative To Fundamentalist Physicalism And Supernaturalism, Earl R. Cookson Jul 2012

Naturalized Panpsychism: An Alternative To Fundamentalist Physicalism And Supernaturalism, Earl R. Cookson

Dissertations (1934 -)

A central problem in the mind-body debate is the generation problem: how consciousness occurs in a universe understood as primarily non-conscious. This problem is particularly bothersome for physicalists. I argue that the generation problem stems from a non-critical presupposition about the nature of reality, namely, that the mental is an exception in the universe, a non-fundamental property. I call this presupposition mental specialism. Despite the fact that mental specialism dogmatically ingrained in the debate, there has been little reason offered either to accept or reject it. And doing so would dissolve the generation problem. But rejecting mental specialism, though it …

This policy research investigated the question: "What are the implications of Republic Act 7161 (or the Forest Charges Law) as it is interpreted, imposed, and implemented towards sustainable rattan-based livelihoods of indigenous peoples (IP) communities in the Philippines?" An in-depth review and analysis of the Act was undertaken by examining the past policies, relevant administrative orders, and memorandum circulars issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and relevant forerunner agencies. The policy performance of forest charges via-a-vis collection and resource conservation targets and the perceptions of the IP communities towards RA 7161 were assessed. Results provide evidence …

Bark Beetles, Ryan S. Davis, Darren Mcavoy Jul 2012

Bark Beetles, Ryan S. Davis, Darren Mcavoy

All Current Publications

Bark beetles are one of the most destructive forest pests in the world. They are different than the larger longhorned and roundheaded/metallic woodboring beetles commonly infesting the inner wood of trees. The largest bark beetle, the red turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus valens), reaches only 8.3 mm in length. Because of their tiny size, bark beetles are not effective tree killers as individuals.

Memory Modulation In The Classroom: Selective Enhancement Of College Examination Performance By Arousal Induced After Lecture, Kristy A. Nielson, Timothy J. Arentsen

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Laboratory studies examining moderate physiological or emotional arousal induced after learning indicate that it enhances memory consolidation. Yet, no studies have yet examined this effect in an applied context. As such, arousal was induced after a college lecture and its selective effects were examined on later exam performance. Participants were divided into two groups who either watched a neutral video clip (n = 66) or an arousing video clip (n = 70) after lecture in a psychology course. The final examination occurred two weeks after the experimental manipulation. Only performance on the group of final exam items that …

Unconventional Uses Of Microcantilevers As Chemical Sensors In Gas And Liquid Media, I. Dufour, Fabien Josse, Stephen M. Heinrich, C. Lucat, C. Ayela, F. Ménil, O. Brand

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The use of microcantilevers as (bio)chemical sensors usually involves the application of a chemically sensitive layer. The coated device operates either in a static bending regime or in a dynamic flexural mode. While some of these coated devices may be operated successfully in both the static and the dynamic modes, others may suffer from certain shortcomings depending on the type of coating, the medium of operation and the sensing application. Such shortcomings include lack of selectivity and reversibility of the sensitive coating and a reduced quality factor due to the surrounding medium. In particular, the performance of microcantilevers excited in …

The serotonergic system has been hypothesized to contribute to the biological susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and body-mass index (BMI) categories. We investigate a possible association of 5-HTTLPR polymorphism (L and S alleles) in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) with the development of T2DM and/or higher BMI by analyzing a sample of 138 individuals diagnosed with T2DM and 172 unrelated controls from the Mexican general population. In the total sample genotypes were distributed according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and S allele frequency was 0.58. There was no statistical association between 5-HTTLPR polymorphism and the development …

Further Exploration Of Nontypable Haemophilus Influenzae Proteins P5 And P6 As Vaccine Candidates, Anthony Mangan Jul 2012

Further Exploration Of Nontypable Haemophilus Influenzae Proteins P5 And P6 As Vaccine Candidates, Anthony Mangan

Theses

Nontypable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) is a Gram-negative bacterium which causes otitis media (ear infections), pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis. For many years, the P6 protein has been a leading candidate for a protein vaccine against NTHi, because it is conserved among NTHi strains, is believed to be surface exposed, and contains binding sites for specific antibodies. However, recent structural analysis suggests that P6 may be inserted into the outer membrane in two orientations. Based on the interaction with its homologues in Escherichia coli (E. coli), we proposed that P5, a transmembrane protein in NTHi, plays a role in P6's apparent dual …

A Regression-Based Training Algorithm For Multilayer Neural Networks, Christopher W. Sherry Jul 2012

A Regression-Based Training Algorithm For Multilayer Neural Networks, Christopher W. Sherry

Theses

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful tools for machine learning with applications in many areas including speech recognition, image classification, medical diagnosis, and spam filtering. It has been shown that ANNs can approximate any function to any degree of accuracy given enough neurons and training time. However, there is no guarantee on the number of neurons required or the time it will take to train them. These are the main disadvantages of using ANNs. This thesis develops an algorithm which uses regression-based techniques to decrease the number of training epochs. A modification of the Delta Rule, combined with techniques established …

Clustered Subsampling For Clinically Informed Diagnostic Brain Mapping, Malin Björnsdotter, Diego Sona, Sonny Rosenthal, Justin Dauwels

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Brain based diagnostic systems have recently received attention as a tool in the characterization and diagnosis of a variety of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Nonetheless, a majority of disorders are still diagnosed entirely based on symptom assessments and behavioral correlates. We therefore propose a method for fusing brain responses with clinical measures for improved diagnosis. To this end, we utilized the flexibility of clustered random subspace brain mapping to detect regions where brain responses in conjunction with a clinical measure could reliably differentiate patients from control subjects. We demonstrate the approach on realistically simulated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain …

Cash In Hand, Want Better Looking Mate: Significant Resource Cues Raise Reported Mating Standards In Men, Jose C. Yong, Norman P. Li Jul 2012

Cash In Hand, Want Better Looking Mate: Significant Resource Cues Raise Reported Mating Standards In Men, Jose C. Yong, Norman P. Li

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Resources are a cardinal component of male mate value in the sexual exchange between men and women. Inspired by theories and research suggesting a link between mating and resource constructs as well as studies linking money and valuations of others, the current study tests the hypothesis that cues to resource availability may lead to higher mating standards for men, but not women. Participants were exposed to either stacks of paper, a small sum of money (104 Singapore dollars ~USD$84), or a large sum of money (2600 Singapore dollars ~USD$2100). Consistent with the hypothesis, after male – but not female – …

Environmental Damages After The Federal Environmental Enforcement Act: Bringing Ecosystem Services To Canadian Environmental Law?, Martin Z. P. Olsynski

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Canadian Environmental Enforcement Act [EEA] directs judges to consider actual environmental damage, or risk thereof, when setting fines for environmental offences. The EEA defi nes damage as including the loss of use and non-use values. While these terms are not unprecedented in Canadian environmental law, their use in environmental damage assessment is. Bearing in mind recent developments in environmental valuation in the United States and internationally, and considering the emergence of the “ecosystem services” paradigm in particular, this article explores the opportunities and challenges for ecosystem services based environmental damages assessment in the Canadian environmental sentencing context. The ecosystem …

Fostering Ecological Citizenship: The Case Of Environmental Service-Learning In Costa Rica, Jennifer Rebecca Kelly, Troy D. Abel

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The intent of this study was to explore how experiential education fosters ecological or environmental citizenship. In this context, we investigated the impact of international environmental service-learning in a college course. Specifically our research question was does environmental service-learning have an effect on ecological citizenship? Using a multimethod approach of both qualitative and quantitative instruments our study drew on 13 participant interviews, 19 student journals and 10 survey responses. Employing variables from the Value-Belief-Norm Theory our findings suggest that environmental service-learning experiences impact both awareness of environmental consequences and personal normative beliefs. We conclude that ecological citizenship was indirectly impacted …

Effectively Ministering To Congregants With Attention Deficit Disorder (A.D.D.), Jason Whitehurst

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A survey of recent medical studies show a rise each year in the number of people diagnosed with A.D.D., or Attention Deficit Disorder. However, pastors have not been adequately educated on how to effectively communicate, counsel, and minister to those with A.D.D. The goal of this project is to educate pastors and church leaders about the nature of A.D.D., the statistics, the symptoms, so that they may better understand how to minister to these people in their congregation. Medical statistics, findings, and new approaches to preaching and ministering will be utilized in this project to fulfill the goal.

The Effect Of Differentiated Instruction On Standardized Assessment Performance Of Students In The Middle School Mathematics Classroom, Kimberly Gail Williams Jul 2012

The Effect Of Differentiated Instruction On Standardized Assessment Performance Of Students In The Middle School Mathematics Classroom, Kimberly Gail Williams

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Changing demographics, student diversity, and increased accountability have compelled educators to challenge the uniform constraints of traditional instruction and create an environment focused on individual achievement. Differentiated instruction empowers teachers to target multiple learning styles through varied themes, adapted content delivery, and assessment options. This quantitative quasi-experimental research study examined the effects of differentiated instruction on seventh grade student performance on standardized mathematics assessments using a repeated-measures design. Two independent research trials, controlling for initial group differences with 2011 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) scores, provided inconclusive assessment results. Significant differences between students who received differentiated instruction compared …

The Relationship Of Student Family Structure And Absence Type To Reading Achievement, James Hixson Jul 2012

The Relationship Of Student Family Structure And Absence Type To Reading Achievement, James Hixson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Middle school students are affected to different degrees by absences from school. While social learning theory suggests students acquire new skills through observation and modeling, some students are more able than others to compensate for school absences. Research has shown that a student's family structure can influence achievement. Unexcused absences have also been linked to lower achievement than excused ones. Excessive unexcused absences have also been associated with family problems including insufficient support for school endeavors. This quantitative causal comparative research study will examine the relationship between family structure and absence type to reading achievement in a Title I school. …
