Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Stanley Hauerwas’S Influence On Catholic Moral Theology, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
One might begin considering the reception of Stanley Hauerwas’s work in Catholic moral theology by asking: why did both Commonweal and First Things opt to publish reviews of Hauerwas’s memoir Hannah’s Child? What is it about Hauerwas’s theological discussion of his own work that engages an educated Catholic audience of magazines putatively representing both ends of the spectrum? It is not only that both journals actively seek engagement with Protestant voices; nor is it only that Hauerwas has a degree of renown, thanks to Time magazine. It is also exactly what Peter Steinfels alludes to in his review, that Hauerwas …
Women, Disabled, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Women, Disabled, Jana Marguerite Bennett
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Women are disabled. This is not simply the notion that some women have disabilities (in the way that I myself am a woman with a hearing loss), but that the very fact of being a woman is a disability. I have no doubt that there are people who might find this statement offensive. People with disabilities (as commonly understood) might find it so because it would seem to lessen difficulties, pains, and real encumbrances that disability entails. Some feminists might do so because it would seem to emphasize some of the very stereotypes of women that they wish to overcome: …

Leadership & Statesmanship: An Introduction, Kahlib Fischer
Leadership & Statesmanship: An Introduction, Kahlib Fischer
Faculty Publications and Presentations
This course allows us to focus on statesmanship—its definition, attributes, and application in the political arena. Before doing so, we need to understand the extent to which statesmanship and leadership overlap. After all, to be a statesman is to be a leader, but does that mean that all leaders are statesman? Before that question can be answered, we will look at a basic (and Biblical) overview of the key ideas of leadership which may be relevant to our understanding of statesmanship. In doing so, it is hoped that the reader will look for points of personal application from the principles …

Targeting Cell Nuclei For The Automation Of Raman Spectroscopy In Cytology, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitri Dubovitskiy, Fiona Lyng
Conference papers
Biological cell analysis has, and is still, an important aspect in medical research and clinical diagnosis. Although cytologists routinely undertake a diagnosis using optical mi-croscopy, human factors make this routine unreliable especially when it involves many consecutive tasks that are monotonous, time consuming and focus on pattern matching tasks where the patterns concerned are not always entirely clear and/or do not necessarily belong to a well defined class. Raman Spectroscopy provides the potential to generate a fundamental representation on the status of cellular conditions through the characteristics of a Raman spectrum generated by the back-scatter of a laser pulse incident …
A Selective Force Favoring Increased G+C Content In Bacterial Genes, Rahul Raghavan, Yogeshwar D. Kelkar, Howard Ochman
A Selective Force Favoring Increased G+C Content In Bacterial Genes, Rahul Raghavan, Yogeshwar D. Kelkar, Howard Ochman
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Bacteria display considerable variation in their overall base compositions, which range from 13% to over 75% G+C. This variation in genomic base compositions has long been considered to be a strictly neutral character, due solely to differences in the mutational process; however, recent sequence comparisons indicate that mutational input alone cannot produce the observed base compositions, implying a role for natural selection. Because bacterial genomes have high gene content, forces that operate on the base composition of individual genes could help shape the overall genomic base composition. To explore this possibility, we tested whether genes that encode the same protein …
Robinson Jeffers,W.B. Yeats, And Ecoprophecy, Deborah Fleming
Robinson Jeffers,W.B. Yeats, And Ecoprophecy, Deborah Fleming
Jeffers Studies
W. B. Yeats and Robinson Jeffers shared a vision of modernity which rejected contemporary values in favor of tradition. Both emphasized permanence in times of fragmentation and featured dramatic landscapes and cultural myth. Included among Modernist poets in spite of early Romantic influence and his commitment to formalist verse, Yeats fixed his gaze on the past, establishing the poetic terms of decolonization and interconnectedness of culture, place, and nature. Excluded from the circle of Modernist poets, Jeffers’s voiced what we call today ecocentrism—the earth or natural world rather than the human mind being the center of things. Jeffers’s ecoprophecy stems …

Photochemistry of dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in marine biogeochemical cycles, including the regeneration of inorganic nutrients. DOM photochemistry affects nitrogen cycling by converting bio-refractory dissolved organic nitrogen to labile inorganic nitrogen, mainly ammonium (NH4+).During the August 2009 Mackenzie Light and Carbon (MALINA) Program, the absorbed photon-based efficiency spectra of NH4+ photoproduction (i.e. photoammonification) were determined using water samples from the SE Beaufort Sea, including the Mackenzie River estuary, shelf, and Canada Basin. The photoammonification efficiency decreased with increasing wavelength across the ultraviolet and visible regimes and was higher in offshore waters …
Unsex Mothering: Toward A New Culture Of Parenting, Darren Rosenblum
Unsex Mothering: Toward A New Culture Of Parenting, Darren Rosenblum
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
In this Article, I observe that “mothering” and “fathering” have been inappropriately tethered to biosex. “Mothering” should be unsexed as the primary parental relationship. “Fathering,” correspondingly, should be unsexed from its breadwinner status. In an ideal world, people now considered “mothers” and “fathers” would be “parents” first, a category that includes all forms of caretaking. One could even imagine an androgynous world in which parenting has no sexed subcategories, whether attached to biosex or not. I doubt our world is anywhere near that; I also wonder whether universal androgyny is a utopian ideal worth pursuing. I instead focus in this …
