Providing A Fast Conversion Of Total Dose To Biological Effective Dose (Bed) For Hybrid Seed Brachytherapy, Jakub Pritz, Kenneth M. Forster, Amarjit S. Saini, Matthew C. Biagioli, Geoffrey G. Zhang Jan 2012

Providing A Fast Conversion Of Total Dose To Biological Effective Dose (Bed) For Hybrid Seed Brachytherapy, Jakub Pritz, Kenneth M. Forster, Amarjit S. Saini, Matthew C. Biagioli, Geoffrey G. Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications

Optimization of permanent seed implant brachytherapy plans for treatment of prostate cancer should be based on biological effective dose (BED) distributions, since dose does not accurately represent biological effects between different types of sources. Currently, biological optimization for these plans is not feasible due to the amount of time necessary to calculate the BED distribution. This study provides a fast calculation method, based on the total dose, to calculate the BED distribution. Distributions of various numbers of hybrid seeds were used to calculate total dose distributions, as well as BED distributions. Hybrid seeds are a mixture of different isotopes (in …

Anthropological Data Regarding The Adaptiveness Of Hebephilia, Raymond B. Hames, Ray Blanchard Jan 2012

Anthropological Data Regarding The Adaptiveness Of Hebephilia, Raymond B. Hames, Ray Blanchard

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Hebephilia is the sexual attraction to early pubertal children in Tanner Stages 2 and 3, generally ages 11 through 14.

The second author of this letter (R.B.), a member of the Paraphilias Subworkgroup of the Work Group on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders for DSM-5, proposed a diagnostic entity for DSM-5 that resembles the ICD-10 model, but with a different name: Pedohebephilic Disorder. In the original proposal (Blanchard, 2010a), this disorder would have three subtypes: pedophilic, hebephilic, and pedohebephilic. In the current version of the proposal, which is still under consideration, the name has been changed to Pedophilic Disorder, in …

Binford, Lewis R., Alan J. Osborn Jan 2012

Binford, Lewis R., Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Binford challenged anthropologists and archaeologists to expand the scope of their research, to develop more rigorous methodologies for data collection and analysis, and to think more critically. Science is a marathon without a finish line. Our understanding of past and present human behavior and cultural systems does not come easily. Social scientists can produce reliable knowledge by means of an iterative process that involves generating, testing, and refining (or rejecting) explanatory models. These models are, then, combined to construct scientific theories. The robust consequences of these theories are then continually scrutinized and evaluated. Binford continually made use of the complex …

Estimation Of Breed-Specific Heterosis Effects For Birth, Weaning And Yearling Weight In Cattle., L. N. Schiermiester, R. M. Thallman, L. A. Kuehn, M. L. Spangler Jan 2012

Estimation Of Breed-Specific Heterosis Effects For Birth, Weaning And Yearling Weight In Cattle., L. N. Schiermiester, R. M. Thallman, L. A. Kuehn, M. L. Spangler

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Heterosis, assumed proportional to expected breed heterozygosity, was calculated for 4,835 individuals with birth, weaning and yearling weight records from Cycle VII of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center Germplasm Evaluation Program. Heterosis was further estimated by proportions of British x British (BxB), British x Continental (BxC) and Continental x Continental (CxC) crosses. Angus and Red Angus were considered a single breed for estimation of heterosis. Direct heritability estimates (SE) for birth, weaning and yearling weight were 0.39 (0.05), 0.18 (0.04) and .40 (0.06), respectively. The BxB covariate was significant and BxC approached significance for weaning weight. The BxB proportion …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

In recent years, prices for N fertilizer have increased dramatically, reducing net returns of fertilized pasture systems. A 5-yr study from 2005 to 2009 was conducted to evaluate management strategies and relative differences in profitability for 3 methods of backgrounding calves on smooth bromegrass pastures. Forty-five steers were used each year for a total of 225 animals in a randomized complete block design. Treatments included pastures fertilized in the spring with 90 kg N/ha (FERT), nonfertilized pastures with calves supplemented daily with dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) at 0.6% of BW (SUPP), and control (CONT) pastures that had no …

Controversial Conceptions: The Unborn And The American Convention On Human Rights, Alvaro Paul Jan 2012

Controversial Conceptions: The Unborn And The American Convention On Human Rights, Alvaro Paul

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

This study interprets the ambiguous Article 4(1) of the American Convention on Human Rights, which establishes that life shall be protected "in general, from the moment of conception." When doing so, it pays attention to different interpretive systems, and takes into account what is recorded in the travaux priparatoires of the Convention. Likewise, this study analyzes what the Inter-American Commission has determined on this issue, and assesses the value of these decisions. This article concludes that, even though one of the possible interpretations of the American Convention affirms that it would tolerate domestic legislations providing for abortion in exceptional circumstances, it …

Heifer Development: Think Profit, Not Just Cost Or Revenues, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Richard N. Funston Funston Jan 2012

Heifer Development: Think Profit, Not Just Cost Or Revenues, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Richard N. Funston Funston

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Recent research on the economics of optimal beef replacement heifer size development reinforced the established economic principle that revenue or cost optimization are not equal to profit optimization. A modified profit function was used to analyze simulated results which demonstrated the differences among the three measures. In the case of optimizing pregnancy rates, a heifer must be heavier to optimize productivity as measured by revenue verses profit. Similarly in the case of cost minimization, the reduction in developmental expenses results in less profit except in the case where the economically optimal sized heifer equals that of the size chosen to …

Towards Optimized Population Control Efficiency In Space And Time: A Modelling Framework Adapted To A Colonial Waterbird, Alban Guillaumet, Brian S. Dorr, Guiming Wang

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The double-crested cormorant is a native North American waterbird that recently underwent a dramatic population expansion. Population control efforts in the USA and Canada attempt to mitigate cormorant damages to natural resources and aquaculture. However, there is currently no coordination among the various stakeholders involved in management activities as well as no attempt to optimize population control efficiency. In this paper, we present for the first time a spatially explicit stage-structured metapopulation model parameterized for the cormorant. We developed simulation tools to get insights into the efficiency gain that can be expected from a better planning of management activities in …

Changing Museum Visitors’ Conceptions Of Evolution, Amy N. Spiegel, E Margaret Evans, Brandy Frazier, Ashley Hazel, Medha Tare, Wendy Gram, Judy Diamond Jan 2012

Changing Museum Visitors’ Conceptions Of Evolution, Amy N. Spiegel, E Margaret Evans, Brandy Frazier, Ashley Hazel, Medha Tare, Wendy Gram, Judy Diamond

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

We examined whether a single visit to an evolution exhibition contributed to conceptual change in adult (n030), youth, and child (n034) museum visitors’ reasoning about evolution. The exhibition included seven current research projects in evolutionary science, each focused on a different organism. To frame this study, we integrated a developmental model of visitors’ understanding of evolution, which incorporates visitors’ intuitive beliefs, with a model of free-choice learning that includes personal, sociocultural, and contextual variables. Using pre- and postmeasures, we assessed how visitors’ causal explanations about biological change, drawn from three reasoning patterns (evolutionary, intuitive, and creationist), were modified as a …

Introduction To Artifacts & Illuminations: Critical Essays On Loren Eisley, Thomas Lynch, Susan M. Maher

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Acknowledged as one of the most important twentieth-century American nature writers, Loren Eiseley was a widely admired practitioner of creative nonfiction, a genre that, in part due to his example, has flourished in recent decades. Contemporary nature writers regularly cite Eiseley as an inspiration and model. General readers, as well, appreciate Eiseley's eloquent, complex, and informative essays; devoted readers have helped keep Eiseley continuously in print since his books first began appearing more than a half century ago. Clearly, Eiseley is a writer who matters. As many observers lament, current environmental and other problems require a public and media that …

Bean Leaf Beetle And Soybean Aphid Control Using Foliar Treatments In A Certified-Organic Operation—Neely-Kinyon Trial, 2010-2011, Andrea Mckern

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Summary of Project

Goal: The goal of this project is to find effective management treatments for the bean leaf beetle (Cerotoma trifurcata) and soybean aphid (Aphis glycines) for use in certified-organic soybeans. The bean leaf beetle is one of the major vectors of bean pod mottle virus, which causes seed staining and can cause a downgrading of the soybeans at market from food grade to feed grade. Feeding from the soybean aphid causes stunted plants, reduced pods and seeds, and can transmit viruses that cause mottling and distortion of the leaves and a reduced seed set. …

Ralph W. Schreiber Conservation Award, 2012, Paul A. Johnsgard

Paul Johnsgard Collection

The 2012 Ralph W. Schreiber Conservation Award is presented by the American Ornithological Union to Paul A. Johnsgard for his outstanding contributions to the conservation of the Great Plains of North America. Few living ornithologists have written as widely about birds, been more instrumental in promoting awareness of birds generally and the Great Plains avifauna specifically, or have influenced the public more than Paul A. Johnsgard.

The Great Plains of North America is one of the most imperiled landscapes in the world. The birds that depend upon these fragile habitats are being lost. Without the support of the public, policy-makers, …

Examining Chronic Non-Cancer Pain Among A Sample Of Individuals In Opioid Treatment Programs, Erin Stevenson Jan 2012

Examining Chronic Non-Cancer Pain Among A Sample Of Individuals In Opioid Treatment Programs, Erin Stevenson

Theses and Dissertations--Social Work

National rates of chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) are rising alongside increasing reports of prescription opioid abuse and mortality. Associations between the rise in CNCP and in opioid abuse seem logical, yet research on CNCP among individuals with opioid dependence is currently limited due to the complicated nature of comorbid conditions in research and treatment. This study aims to expand the CNCP knowledge base by responding to the question: Do individuals with CNCP participating in an opiate treatment program have better or worse treatment outcomes than individuals without CNCP?

This study used a secondary dataset including 483 adults from Kentucky’s Opiate …

Expert Evidence In Gender-Based Asylum Cases: Cultural Translation For The Court, Lindsay M. Harris

Journal Articles

This article examines the use of country conditions experts in gender-based asylum claims, with a focus on African women and girls facing gender-based violence in their countries of origin. Using anonymous case examples from the work of the Tahirih Justice Center’s African Women’s Empowerment Project, the article explores the role of experts and the critical bridge that experts can provide in asylum claims adjudicated at the asylum office and in immigration court. A brief overview of U.S. asylum law and procedures sets the stage for a deeper look at expert evidence.

Early Events Of Human Metapneumovirus Infection, Andres Chang Jan 2012

Early Events Of Human Metapneumovirus Infection, Andres Chang

Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a worldwide respiratory pathogen that belongs to the paramyxovirus family of enveloped viruses and affects primarily the pediatric, geriatric, and immunocompromised populations. Despite its prevalence and importance to human health, no therapies are available against this pathogen. For paramyxoviruses, it is believed that infection starts by attachment of the virus to the surface of the cell through the viral attachment protein followed by fusion between the viral and cellular membranes, a process mediated by the fusion (F) protein at the plasma membrane and at neutral pH. Previous work showed that HMPV infection can occur in the …
