Glioblastoma Derived Exosomes Induce Apoptosis In Cytotoxic T Cells Through A Fas Ligand Mediated Mechanism , Keith Z. Sabin, Richard A. Rovin, Johnathan Lawrence, Robert J. Belton Jr, Robert J. Winn

Journal Articles

INTRODUCTION: Glioblastoma multiforme deploy s a number of weapons to thwart the immune system. Within the tumor microenvironment, cytotoxic T cells fall victim to Fas ligand (FasL) induced apoptosis. In prostate and colorectal cancer, exosomes can mediate this FasL induced T cell apoptosis. Exosomes are tiny, membrane bound vesicles that are released from a cell. They contain functional mRNA and protein and have cell surface molecules representative of their parent cell. It is not known if GBM derived exosomes can also mediate FasL triggered apoptosis. In this study, the role of tumor derived exosomes as the delivery vehicle for FasL …

Sellarsian Synopsis: Integrating The Images, Jay L. Garfield

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Most discussion of Sellars’ deployment of the distinct images of “man- in-the-world” in Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man focus entirely on the manifest and the scientific images. But the original image is important as well. In this essay I explore the importance of the original image to the Sellarsian project of naturalizing epistemology, connecting Sellars’ insights regarding this image to recent work incognitive development.

East Beach and Hanna Bay Beach, located on the northeast coast of San Salvador, were two of the island's beaches most heavily impacted by Hurricane Frances (category 3) on September 2, 2004. A maximum storm surge of 3.1 m was reported for East Beach, with erosion occurring up to 70 m inland from the wave-break line and resulting in scarps cut into dunes of up to 1.5 m height. In January 2005, 5 beach profile stations along 1 km of East Beach and 3 stations along Hanna Bay Beach were established to monitor long-term coastal recovery from hurricane damage. East …

Belonging As A Mode Of Interpretive In-Between: Image, Place And Space In The Video Works Of Racialised And Homeless Youth, Rory Crath Jan 2012

Belonging As A Mode Of Interpretive In-Between: Image, Place And Space In The Video Works Of Racialised And Homeless Youth, Rory Crath

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

In an essay in Critical Social Work, Robert Fairbanks suggests that space perspectives need to be accounted for in social work practice if the profession is to procure a more nuanced understanding of the production of social relationships. Yet, Fairbanks s analysis fails to account for the problematic of a spatialised politics of belonging for racialised subjects, and for the connections between racialising practices and (neo)liberal governance on localized social-spatial relations. This paper addresses these shortcoming by accomplishing three objectives: (1) To introduce a renewed vector of space thesis by borrowing from post-colonial writings; (2) To enliven that frame by …

A Law Clinic Systems Theory And The Pedagogy Of Interaction: Creating Legal Learning System, Patrick C. Brayer Jan 2012

A Law Clinic Systems Theory And The Pedagogy Of Interaction: Creating Legal Learning System, Patrick C. Brayer

Faculty Works

This article introduces a clinical systems approach that reframes professional experience as an interaction with a professional environment. The article encourages clinical faculty and other legal educators to contemplate the pedagogy of systemic interaction when teaching from experience and to then expand professional interactive opportunities within the short period of student participation. Clinical systems theory operates on the premise that students should reframe how they look at their surroundings so that the challenges that make up their professional system are not seen as problems but as means to a solution. Reframing by the student is realized in a clinical system …

An Analysis Of Factors That Impact Secondary Science Outcomes In Tennessee, Suzanne Lawson South

Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze school and district characteristics for 2005–2006 through 2007–2008 to determine which factors impacted science achievement for the graduating class of 2008–2009 in Tennessee. School size, socioeconomic status, per pupil instructional expenditures and rurality/urbanicity were predictor variables. Achievement was represented by performance on the science and reasoning portion of the ACT. Correlational studies indicated that socioeconomic status had a significant impact on science achievement while the impact of school size and rurality/urbanicity was observed to be weak. Statistical analyses through multiple linear regression produced a model in which socioeconomic status and rurality/urbanicity explained …

Pathway To Minority Shareholder Protection: Derivative Actions In The People's Republic Of China, Donald C. Clarke, Nicholas C. Howson

Book Chapters

Using a dataset of Chinese judicial opinions arising in over fifty cases, this paper analyses the development and current implementation of shareholder derivative actions in the courts of the People’s Republic of China (“PRC”), both before and after the derivative lawsuit was explicitly authorized in the PRC’s 2006 Company Law effective January 1, 2006. In addition, we describe the very unique ecology of enterprise organization and corporate governance in modern China, and critique the formal design of the derivative action and offer reform suggestions. We find the design of the Chinese derivative lawsuit to be, in some respects, innovative and …

False Convictions, Phoebe C. Ellsworth, Samuel R. Gross

Book Chapters

False convictions have received a lot of attention in recent years. Two-hundred and forty-one prisoners have been released after DNA testing has proved their innocence, and hundreds of others have been released without DNA evidence. We now know quite a bit more about false convictions than we did thirty years ago - but there is much more that we do not know, and may never know.

Attitudes Toward Suicide In Peers Affected By A Point Cluster Of Suicides As Adolescents, Caroline Abbott Jan 2012

Attitudes Toward Suicide In Peers Affected By A Point Cluster Of Suicides As Adolescents, Caroline Abbott

Psychology Honors Papers

This thesis aimed to study how exposure to peer suicide may relate to current adjustment and attitudes towards suicide. Eight-five young adult graduates of the same public high school in the northeast who were exposed to multiple peer suicides as adolescents filled out an Attitudes Towards Suicide Scale, Scale of Perceived Social Support, reported their level of agreement with Thomas Joiner’s suicide myths, and completed the Texas Revised Inventories of Grief for each peer lost to suicide. Grief was relatively low in this sample, but related to number of peers lost to suicide and closeness to those peers. Exposure to …

Attitudes, Beliefs, And Practices Of Providers And Key Opinion Leaders On Emergency Contraception In India, M.E. Khan, Deepthi S. Varma, Isha Bhatnagar, Anvita Dixit, Martha Brady

Reproductive Health

The Population Council undertook this study to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding emergency contraception (ECP) among providers in public and private facilities and pharmacies in India. The objectives of the study were to: assess providers' knowledge of ECP's biological mechanism; understand providers' knowledge and attitudes about ECP's safety, effectiveness, and availability as an OTC drug; and identify providers' definitions of “repeated use” and profiling women who are “repeated users” of ECP. This study's findings show that most providers, including doctors and some KOLs, were incorrectly informed about ECP's mechanism of action. Service guidelines are necessary for accurate and …

Effects Of Berberine, Chelerythrine, And Sanguinarine On Proliferation In Four Human Immortalized Cell Lines, David S. Senchina, Nisarg B. Shah, Marc G. Busch

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis L., Papaveraceae) is a plant rich in benzophenanchridine (isoquinoline) alkaloids such as sanguinarine and chelerychrine. Both isolated alkaloids and whole-tissue rhizome extracts have demonstrated in vitro anticarcinogenic (antiproliferacive) activity in limited immortalized cell culture models, but the relative contribution of various alkaloid constituents to whole-tissue extract activity, and whether or not various alkaloids may act synergistically, has not been investigated. We challenged four immortalized cell lines (Jurkat, K562, Ramos, U937) with various doses of chelerythrine, sanguinarine, and berberine (a structurally and functionally similar alkaloid absent from bloodroot), alone and in all possible combinations, and measured proliferation …

Perspectives: Developing And Defining Both Science And Science Education As Disciplines, Robert E. Yager Jan 2012

Perspectives: Developing And Defining Both Science And Science Education As Disciplines, Robert E. Yager

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The six "domains" have been identified as features for the "doing" of science. These six are: Concept, Process, Creativity, Attitude, Application, and Worldview. They are offered to affect teaching, student learning, as well as a new way of defining science. Concepts and Processes often are the only two typically used to define school and college science content; Creativity and Positive Attitudes are added as two "enabling" domains; a fifth Domain is offered as a focus on the Application of typical concepts and process skills. It is the Domain where and how most people live and operate! The sixth Domain is …

Growing Gaps: Children's Experiences Of Inequality In A Faith-Based Afterschool Program In The U.S. South, Caroline Ellender Compretta Jan 2012

Growing Gaps: Children's Experiences Of Inequality In A Faith-Based Afterschool Program In The U.S. South, Caroline Ellender Compretta

Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology

This ethnographic research examines the social service encounter between private providers and child recipients involved in a faith-based afterschool program located in a southern US city. I specifically focus on the tensions and divisions that developed between staff members and participating families in daily programmatic interactions and rhetoric. I highlight how race, class, and gender intersected with age to shape children’s different experiences of the afterschool program and their lives beyond the agency. I also show how these social categories converged in local stories of religious poverty relief, which build upon cultural narratives about American welfare, to blind staff to …

The purpose of this study was to explore how secondary mathematics teachers involved in a National ICT Project (NIP) use ICT in their teaching practice. A qualitative approach was used for the study which was done in one of the seven zones which make up NIP. Data was collected through interviews, document analysis and observation. In Tanzania, the National ICT Project aims to enhance teaching and learning of mathematics by providing ICT equipment, training and electronic content to secondary schools. However, availability of ICT will not improve learning on its own. The process through which ICT enhances teaching and learning …

Exploring Teacher Leadership Development In A Public Secondary School In Uganda, Stephen Olukor Jan 2012

Exploring Teacher Leadership Development In A Public Secondary School In Uganda, Stephen Olukor

Master of Education

Effective school leadership is currently associated with school improvement that enhances teaching and learning processes. School improvement is believed to be possible with teacher participation in leadership at the classroom and school organizational levels. To create a culture of reflective teaching and learning in a school requires a shift in perception of school leadership as actions of an individual called a head teacher to a process of collective influence. Schools need to put in place effective leadership development programmes for teachers. This study on teacher leadership development was conducted in one public secondary school in Uganda to explore how teacher …

Exploring The Use Of The Science Laboratory In Science Teaching: A Case Of A Secondary School In Kenya, Peter Kibet Chemjor Jan 2012

Exploring The Use Of The Science Laboratory In Science Teaching: A Case Of A Secondary School In Kenya, Peter Kibet Chemjor

Master of Education

The natural sciences are highly regarded subjects in the Kenya science curriculum. This is due to the fact that the country hopes to use scientific knowledge to enhance development of industries and propel the country to achieve vision 2030. However, the performance of students in science examination has not been impressive, especially in questions that require science process skills usually acquired from the laboratory. For Kenya that is aiming at using scientific literacy to achieve industrialization by 2030, it is unlikely that this goal will be attained. This study, therefore, sought to explore how science teachers use the science laboratory …
