A Look At The Causes Of Gender Identity With The Help Of Four Core Genotype Mice, Evan Serio Friedenberg Apr 2012

A Look At The Causes Of Gender Identity With The Help Of Four Core Genotype Mice, Evan Serio Friedenberg

Scripps Senior Theses

The purpose of this project is to better understand the influences underlying gender differences in the brain using Four Core Genotype mice. Four Core Genotype mice are transgenic mice in which the SRY gene has been translocated from the Y chromosome to another location. This enables separation of the genetic sex and gonadal sex. For example, there are female mice based on sexual organs but their chromosomes are XY(UY- in mice). This allows us to determine whether sexual differentiation in the brain is due to genes or hormones. In this project, I looked at a sexually dimorphic area of the …

Targeting Apoptosis For Optical Imaging Of Infection, Mathew L Thakur, Kaijun Zhang, Bishnuhari Paudyal, Devadhas Devakumar, Maria Y Covarrubias, Changpo Cheng, Brian D Gray, Eric Wickstrom, Koon Y Pak Apr 2012

Targeting Apoptosis For Optical Imaging Of Infection, Mathew L Thakur, Kaijun Zhang, Bishnuhari Paudyal, Devadhas Devakumar, Maria Y Covarrubias, Changpo Cheng, Brian D Gray, Eric Wickstrom, Koon Y Pak

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: Infection is ubiquitous and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The most reliable method for localizing infection requires radiolabeling autologous white blood cells ex vivo. A compound that can be injected directly into a patient and can selectively image infectious foci will eliminate the drawbacks. The resolution of infection is associated with neutrophil apoptosis and necrosis presenting phosphatidylserine (PS) on the neutrophil outer leaflet. Targeting PS with intravenous administration of a PS-specific, near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore will permit localization of infectious foci by optical imaging.

METHODS: Bacterial infection and sterile inflammation were induced in separate groups (n = 5) …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Iron(Ii) Complexes Modeling The Active Site Structure Of Nonheme Iron Dioxygenases, Jacob Baus Apr 2012

Synthesis And Characterization Of Iron(Ii) Complexes Modeling The Active Site Structure Of Nonheme Iron Dioxygenases, Jacob Baus

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The aerobic degradation of polycyclic aromatic compounds, which are widespread contaminants in soils and groundwaters, is carried-out in large part by various Fe-containing dioxygenases that perform the cis-dihydroxylation and oxidative cleavage of aromatic rings. Recently, a new Fe dioxygenase family emerged that catalyzes a remarkable set of transformations; the distinguishing feature of these enzymes is that their monoiron(II) centers are coordinated by three histidines residues (i.e., imidazole ligands) in a facial geometry - a departure from the "canonical" 2-histidine-1-carboxylate facial triad that is dominant among nonheme monoiron enzymes. Members of the "3His family" are capable of oxidatively cleaving C-C bonds …

Causal Varian Discovery In Familial Congenital Heart Disease - An Integrative -Omic Approach, Wendy Demos Apr 2012

Causal Varian Discovery In Familial Congenital Heart Disease - An Integrative -Omic Approach, Wendy Demos

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a congenital heart defect that leads to neonatal death or compromised quality of life for those affected and their families. This syndrome requires extensive medical intervention for the affected to survive. It is characterized by significant underdevelopment or non-existence of the components of the left heart and the aorta, including the left ventricular cavity and mass. There are many factors ranging from genetics to environmental relationships hypothesized to lead to the development of the syndrome, including recent studies suggesting a link between hearing impairment and congenital heart defects (CHD). Although broadly characterized those factors …

Detection And Analysis Of Sludge Bulking Events Using Data Mining And Machine Learning Approach, Yuanhao Zhao Apr 2012

Detection And Analysis Of Sludge Bulking Events Using Data Mining And Machine Learning Approach, Yuanhao Zhao

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Sludge bulking is the most notable cause of activated sludge plant failure (i.e. exceeding discharge permit quality limits) worldwide. Numerous mathematical methods have been applied to detect and provide warning for the prevention of sludge bulking. However, these models often fail to reliably forecast sludge bulking events because they focus on the point-by-point "curve-fitting" strategy, while the number of bulking event data points is relatively small in comparison with the large amount of data in the time series. Therefore, three machine learning approaches which focus on detecting the temporal pattern data before the sludge bulking events are considered in this …

The Effect Of Extracorporeal Shock Wave (Esw) On Cementoblasts In Vitro, Joshua Barta Apr 2012

The Effect Of Extracorporeal Shock Wave (Esw) On Cementoblasts In Vitro, Joshua Barta

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Root resorption is an adverse consequence of orthodontic treatment, and currently no effective treatment method exists. Extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) has been applied to enhance angiogenesis, growth and healing of bone, but the effects of ESW on root resorption have not been studied. Cementoblasts are the cells responsible for forming and repairing cementum covering the dental root, and ESW may enhance this reparative process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ESW on cementoblasts to determine if ESW could potentially be used to treat root resorption. OCCM.30 cementoblasts were prepared in suspension at a density of …

Mechanical Stress Modulates Expression Of Toll-Like Receptors In Human Pdl, Yaroslav Yarmolyuk Apr 2012

Mechanical Stress Modulates Expression Of Toll-Like Receptors In Human Pdl, Yaroslav Yarmolyuk

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Orthodontic movement of teeth with compromised periodontium is risky because heavy orthodontic force could exacerbate the damaged periodontal status. Guidelines for moving periodontally-compromised teeth have not been established due to the lack of scientific evidence about the relationship between periodontal inflammation and mechanical force. In periodontitis, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is recognized in the periodontal ligament (PDL) by toll-like receptors (TLR) which leads to destruction of periodontal tissues through inflammatory cascades. Recent studies have demonstrated that absence of TLR2 and TLR4 leads to reduced alveolar bone loss in mice. Therefore, reduction of TLR2 and TLR4 on PDL cells can have a protective …

Hazy Shades Of Winter: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Preliminary Injunctions, Rachel A. Weisshaar Apr 2012

Hazy Shades Of Winter: Resolving The Circuit Split Over Preliminary Injunctions, Rachel A. Weisshaar

Vanderbilt Law Review

The preliminary injunction is an extraordinarily powerful remedy. After only an initial hearing, a court can command the nonmovant to perform-or to refrain from performing-an action, enforceable by criminal contempt. This supposedly temporary form of relief is often, in practical terms, dispositive of the case because the preliminary injunction remains in effect unless and until a subsequent decision vacates it.

The Acute Responses Of Different-Sized Coronary Arteries To Testosterone, Sampath Madanu Apr 2012

The Acute Responses Of Different-Sized Coronary Arteries To Testosterone, Sampath Madanu

Masters Theses

Coronary arteries supply blood to the myocardium. The blood flow within the coronary arteries is altered by various compounds produced within the body. Sex hormones such as testosterone are known to cause the relaxation of large coronary arteries. But the response to testosterone is greater in in vivo conditions compared to in vitro conditions. We hypothesize that the responses of LADs (left anterior descending arteries) and its side branches to testosterone are heterogeneous and testosterone-induced vasodilation is greater in its side branches. Therefore, our study was designed to determine the effect of testosterone in different-sized coronary arteries. LADs and one …

Automatic Atlas Based Analysis Of Radiotracer Uptake In Bones From Fused Nuclear Imaging/Ct Data Sets Of Mice, Jeffrey Lee Vanoss Apr 2012

Automatic Atlas Based Analysis Of Radiotracer Uptake In Bones From Fused Nuclear Imaging/Ct Data Sets Of Mice, Jeffrey Lee Vanoss

Masters Theses

Preclinical in vivo imaging is a powerful tool used for a wide variety of biomedical research applications including oncology, cardiac disease, and neurological disease. Disease physiology can be imaged in vivo with molecular imaging such as PET and SPECT. Quality analysis of molecular in vivo images currently requires an expert technician. The feasibility of large preclinical molecular imaging studies is limited by the man hours required to process the overwhelming amount of data created from preclinical scans. Our proposed solution to the bottle neck of manual image analysis is to implement automation of preclinical molecular image analysis. The method described …

Development Of A Computer-Aided Detection (Cad) Tool For Contrast Micro Computed Tomography Imaging In Diagnosing Liver Metastases, Anderson Steadham Peck Apr 2012

Development Of A Computer-Aided Detection (Cad) Tool For Contrast Micro Computed Tomography Imaging In Diagnosing Liver Metastases, Anderson Steadham Peck

Masters Theses

High morbidity of metastatic tumors in the liver has been observed in several different types of cancers. Liver failure from metastases is one of the primary causes of death in these patients. Effective treatments for liver metastases do not currently exist. However, new pharmaceutical treatments are being explored in a preclinical setting where the cancer and its treatments are designed in vitro and then studied in vivo in mice. Therefore, effective and accurate techniques for non-invasive imaging and analysis of liver metastases in mice are critical to the development of new treatments.

In-vivo micro CT imaging is not only one …

Image-Guided Robotic Dental Implantation With Natural-Root-Formed Implants, Xiaoyan Sun Apr 2012

Image-Guided Robotic Dental Implantation With Natural-Root-Formed Implants, Xiaoyan Sun

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Dental implantation is now recognized as the standard of the care for tooth replacement. Although many studies show high short term survival rates greater than 95%, long term studies (> 5 years) have shown success rates as low as 41.9%. Reasons affecting the long term success rates might include surgical factors such as limited accuracy of implant placement, lack of spacing controls, and overheating during the placement.

In this dissertation, a comprehensive solution for improving the outcome of current dental implantation is presented, which includes computer-aided preoperative planning for better visualization of patient-specific information and automated robotic site-preparation for superior …

Nonosecond Pulsed Electric Field Induced Changes In Dielectric Properties Of Biological Cells, Jie Zhuang Apr 2012

Nonosecond Pulsed Electric Field Induced Changes In Dielectric Properties Of Biological Cells, Jie Zhuang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nanosecond pulsed electric field induced biological effects have been a focus of research interests since the new millennium. Promising biomedical applications, e.g. tumor treatment and wound healing, are emerging based on this principle. Although the exact mechanisms behind the nanosecond pulse-cell interactions are not completely understood yet, it is generally believed that charging along the cell membranes (including intracellular membranes) and formation of membrane pores trigger subsequent biological responses, and the number and quality of pores are responsible for the cell fate. The immediate charging response of a biological cell to a nanosecond pulsed electric field exposure relies on the …

An Exploration Of Neutron Detection In Semiconducting Boron Carbide, Nina Hong Apr 2012

An Exploration Of Neutron Detection In Semiconducting Boron Carbide, Nina Hong

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The 3He supply problem in the U.S. has necessitated the search for alternatives for neutron detection. The neutron detection efficiency is a function of density, atomic composition, neutron absorption cross section, and thickness of the neutron capture material. The isotope 10B is one of only a handful of isotopes with a high neutron absorption cross section—3840 barns for thermal neutrons. So a boron carbide semiconductor represents a viable alternative to 3He. This dissertation provides an evaluation of the performance of semiconducting boron carbide neutron detectors grown by plasma enhance chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) in order to determine …

Ultrafast Intense-Field Photoionization And Photofragmentation Of Systematic Series Of Substituted Organic Molecules, Timothy D. Scarborough Apr 2012

Ultrafast Intense-Field Photoionization And Photofragmentation Of Systematic Series Of Substituted Organic Molecules, Timothy D. Scarborough

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The abundance and relevance of organic molecules similar to benzene makes their study important. Studying the interactions of such molecules with intense light fields has implications for the generation of short-wavelength radiation, attosecond science, high-harmonic generation, and many other fields. However, the computing power necessary to complete fully ab initio calculations describing molecules of this size does not exist; this leaves theoretical studies to rely on assumptions and approximations just to calculate the energies of the ground state. Including any sort of dynamics in these calculations is prohibitively complicated, and this makes experimental observations important. Since many organic molecules are …

Superstars And Misfits: Two Pop-Trends In The Gender Culture Of Contemporary Evangelicalism, Kelsy Burke, Amy Mcdowell Apr 2012

Superstars And Misfits: Two Pop-Trends In The Gender Culture Of Contemporary Evangelicalism, Kelsy Burke, Amy Mcdowell

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper examines gender in two forms of mediated contemporary Protestant evangelicalism in the United States: a male-dominated punk network, called Misfits United, and a women’s group studying Beth Moore’s Bible study, It’s Tough Being a Woman (ITBAW). While the appearance and performance styles of these two groups are drastically different, both support gender hierarchies in similar ways. Misfits United and Moore’s ITBAW present the gender of their Christian God as flexible, even transformative, and in effect open up discursive space to conceptualize gender on non-traditional grounds. Paradoxically, however, both reinforce traditional gender roles by emphasizing what distinguishes God from …

Channel Width And Least Tern And Piping Plover Nesting Incidence On The Lower Platte River, Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen, Mary Bomberger Brown, Andrew J. Tyre Apr 2012

Channel Width And Least Tern And Piping Plover Nesting Incidence On The Lower Platte River, Nebraska, Joel G. Jorgensen, Mary Bomberger Brown, Andrew J. Tyre

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Endangered interior least terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos) and threatened northern Great Plains piping plovers (Charadrius melodus) nest together on midstream sandbars in large rivers in the interior of North America. We investigated the relationship between river channel width and tern and plover nesting incidence on the lower Platte River, Nebraska, using a model-based logistic regression analysis. Multiple channel width measurements and a long-term nesting data set were used in the analysis. Nesting incidence was positively associated with increasing river channel width proximal to the nesting site. At a greater distance, up to 802 m away from …

Reproduction And Population Characteristics Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Charles Dieter, Dustin Schaible Apr 2012

Reproduction And Population Characteristics Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Charles Dieter, Dustin Schaible

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

We evaluated the reproductive biology of314 white-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii) in 44 counties throughout South Dakota from June 2004 to September 2005. We classified jackrabbits as juveniles or adults based on the closure of the proximal epiphysis of the humerus using X-ray analysis. We determined annual reproductive activity through fluctuations in measured weights of reproductive organs for both sexes. The 2005 breeding season started in late February and proceeded until mid-July, approximately 142 days, allowing for females to potentially produce 3.3 litters. We found four distinct breeding periods by the overlap of estimated conception and parturition dates. Mean …

Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer Is Unaffected By Modest Changes In Pressure, Benjamin Charles Webber, Christiane A. Carney, Mark Woods Apr 2012

Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer Is Unaffected By Modest Changes In Pressure, Benjamin Charles Webber, Christiane A. Carney, Mark Woods

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

ParaCEST (paramagnetic Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer) agents offer an unparalleled opportunity to perform quantitative molecular imaging by MRI. Agents that can alter the image contrast they generate in response to changes in local environmental parameters such as pH, glucose concentration or lactate concentration can be used ratiometrically to quantitatively describe the local tissue environment. However, when performing such quantitative measurements it is important that the results are not confounded by changes in a second environmental parameter. In vivo pressure varies quite considerably, both through the respiratory cycle and from tissue to tissue (tumors in particular have high interstitial pressures). Since …

Egg Oiling To Reduce Hatch-Year Ring-Billed Gull Numbers On Chicago’S Beaches During Swim Season And Water Quality Test Results, Richard M. Engeman, John W. Hartmann, Scott F. Beckerman, Thomas W. Seamans, Sarah Abu-Absi Apr 2012

Egg Oiling To Reduce Hatch-Year Ring-Billed Gull Numbers On Chicago’S Beaches During Swim Season And Water Quality Test Results, Richard M. Engeman, John W. Hartmann, Scott F. Beckerman, Thomas W. Seamans, Sarah Abu-Absi

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

A burgeoning ring-billed gull population along Chicago’s Lake Michigan beaches contributes to degraded water quality through fecal contamination. Egg oiling was conducted at Chicago’s gull colonies to reduce production and the influx of hatch-year (HY) gulls using Chicago’s beaches, with a second, long-term objective of eventually reducing adult gull numbers through attrition. We also investigated swim season water quality trends through the course of this work. From 2007 to 2009, 52, 80, and 81%, of nests at the two primary nest colonies had their eggs rendered inviable by corn oil application. Counts of HY and after hatch-year (AHY) gulls were …
