Community Gardening: Benefits Focused Strategies, Joseph Zaanan Tellschow Apr 2012

Community Gardening: Benefits Focused Strategies, Joseph Zaanan Tellschow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Throughout history humans have had varying degrees of interaction with nature and natural environments. This interaction has shaped our species in almost every way possible from our physical traits to our behaviors and places we have chosen to occupy. Currently, humans have developed such overwhelming mastery of the planet that it is easy for many humans to feel disconnected from nature. This separation could have detrimental effects on various aspects of human well-being including physical and mental health. To understand these effects, it is important to evaluate the benefits that humans receive from exposure to nature and interaction with natural …

Two Ways Of Being Conscious: The Notion Of Psychic Conversion, Robert Doran Apr 2012

Two Ways Of Being Conscious: The Notion Of Psychic Conversion, Robert Doran

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

In this essay I will present an overview of what I have called psychic conversion. I will begin by narrating the birth of the idea, then will present a brief schematic history of its development and principal applications to date, and will conclude by presenting my current thinking, which involves connections with the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, and the mimetic theory of Rene Girard. It will be clear from the first section that Heidegger and Jung were influential in the very emergence of the idea, but in my current work I have developed …

Recognition And Treatment Modalities For Complicated Grief In The Bereaving Widowed Elderly, Tanya Smith Apr 2012

Recognition And Treatment Modalities For Complicated Grief In The Bereaving Widowed Elderly, Tanya Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Reactions to spousal bereavement are very individualized; while a large majority of individuals are able to navigate their way through the bereavement process, there are a significant number who can’t. Individuals who suffer from complicated grief are thought to be essentially stuck in a chronic and intense state of mourning that lasts longer than six months post loss. As one would expect, adverse health outcomes are a consequence of untreated complicated grief. It is the purpose of this paper to present the reader with evidence that there are effective treatment interventions for complicated grief. Additionally, a second purpose of this …

Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick Apr 2012

Freedom As A Natural Phenomenon, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This phenomenon of "freedom" in the natural world - and indirectly the question of free will - is explored using systems-theoretic concepts that link the idea of freedom to ideas about autonomy and agency. The focus is on living systems in general, and on living systems that have cognitive subsystems more specifically. After touching on the relevance to freedom of determinism vs. randomness, the paper examines four types of freedom: (i) independence from fixed materiality, (ii) activeness that is unblocked and wholistic, (iii) internal rather than external determination, and (iv) regulation by an informational subsystem. These types of freedom are …

The Development And Validation Of The Preference For Adherence To Theoretical Orientation Scale, Tiffinee S. Hamilton Apr 2012

The Development And Validation Of The Preference For Adherence To Theoretical Orientation Scale, Tiffinee S. Hamilton

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

One of the most common criticisms of undergraduate and master's level graduate programs is that students lack the ability to define their view of human nature. One effective means of assisting students in their desire to identify their preference in orientation is the use of a validated psychometric instrument developed for mental health trainees. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop and initially validate a new assessment tool, the Preference for Adherence to Theoretical Orientation Scale (PATOS). PATOS provides a theoretically grounded method for assessing a counselor's preference for a particular orientation(s) as well as adherence to a …

Deterring And Dissuading Nuclear Terrorism, John J. Klein Apr 2012

Deterring And Dissuading Nuclear Terrorism, John J. Klein

Journal of Strategic Security

While nuclear deterrence theory may be well-suited to dealing with nuclear-armed states, its suitability for deterring nuclear terrorism has frequently been questioned since 9/11. While terrorist organizations do not necessarily act uniformly or according to the same underlying beliefs, many of the most aggressive organizations are motivated by an ideology that embraces martyrdom and an apocalyptic vision.1 This ideology may be based on religion or a desire to overthrow a government. Consequently, terrorists motivated by ideology who intend to use a stolen or improvised nuclear device against the United States or its interests may not care about the resulting military …

In Search Of "Compass And Gyroscope": Where Were Adaptive Management And Principled Negotiation In Nova Scotia's Forest-Strategy Process?, Peter N. Duinker Apr 2012

In Search Of "Compass And Gyroscope": Where Were Adaptive Management And Principled Negotiation In Nova Scotia's Forest-Strategy Process?, Peter N. Duinker

Dalhousie Law Journal

In his landmark 1993 book entitled Compass and Gyroscope: Integrating Science and Politics for the Environment, Kai Lee outlined the need for stronger processes in support of sustainable development. The science of adaptive management and the politics of principled negotiation were offered as the most promising approaches. The author uses these concepts to evaluate the process used to develop Nova Scotia's natural resources strategies of August 2011, specifically the forest strategy following the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act. The findings show that, by comparison with similar policy-development processes used elsewhere in Canada, the Nova Scotia process lacked both foresight …

Hungry Heart, Valarie Clark Apr 2012

Hungry Heart, Valarie Clark

English Theses & Dissertations

The essays in this collection explore the resistance to and simultaneous need for human connections. In order to illustrate this concept, I use myself as an example of an individual who both longs for and despises her dependence on other people in order to support and define her. The essays are not presented in a traditional chronological format, but instead reflect the chronology of my own realization of the theme of this work. The essay titles are drawn from popular music, intended to mimic the contents of an MP3 player, which reflects the owner's personality, wants and needs. The structure …

After the different effects are analyzed, this paper offers recommendations to recreation programmers. These recommendations account for the different factors of leisure. Overall, this paper is an analysis of …

Genetic Engineering Of Dunaliella: Potential For Improved Biofuel Production, Alison Wirshing Apr 2012

Genetic Engineering Of Dunaliella: Potential For Improved Biofuel Production, Alison Wirshing

Honors Theses and Capstones

Biodiesel produced from algal lipids is a promising source of renewable energy. Reasons for using algae, as opposed to vascular plants, are numerous. Oleaginous algae do not require fertile land or fresh water to grow, and therefore do not compete with food crop resources. Algae have short generation times and higher growth rates than larger vascular plants allowing for synthesis and accumulation of large quantities of neutral lipids, about 20-50% of the dry cell weight, in a short period of time. The efficiency of biodiesel production from oleaginous algae could be improved by using transgenic (genetically engineered) algae. The goal …

Estimating Connecticut Stream Temperatures Using Predictive Models, Erik Carlson Apr 2012

Estimating Connecticut Stream Temperatures Using Predictive Models, Erik Carlson

Honors Theses and Capstones

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) seeks to better classify their streams into thermal regimes (cold, cold transitional, warm transitional, and warm water). A prediction model was created based upon physical characteristics such that CT DEEP could classify streams into thermal regimes based upon the parameters described in Lyons et al. 2009 and compare them to their own classification system. Accurately classifying these thermal regimes determines the environmental protection provided to a stream as well as the potential for establishing fisheries.

Phosphate Availability During Sediment Resuspension Events In The Great Bay Estuary, Taylor Langkau Apr 2012

Phosphate Availability During Sediment Resuspension Events In The Great Bay Estuary, Taylor Langkau

Honors Theses and Capstones

Phosphate is an important nutrient to marine ecosystems such as the Great Bay Estuary. However, its bioavailability is limited due to its tendency to adsorb to marine sediments, especially iron oxides. This paper investigates phosphate dynamics during a simulated storm compared to calm conditions and aims to quantify the mechanisms of phosphate adsorption.

Defeating Cytoplasmic Sequestration Of P53 In Human Breast Cancer Cells; Is Mortalin Involved?, Sarah Yunes Apr 2012

Defeating Cytoplasmic Sequestration Of P53 In Human Breast Cancer Cells; Is Mortalin Involved?, Sarah Yunes

Honors Theses and Capstones

Cytoplasmic sequestration of p53, possibly caused by p53 interacting with mortalin, can prevent p53 from functioning in DNA repair and apoptosis, causing aberrant growth. This project treated SKBR3 breast cancer cells with MKT-077, a dye that is a competitive binder to mortalin to see if it would result in the release of p53 from the cytoplasm and restoration of p53 function. Treatment resulted in partial translocation of a protein suspected to be p53 to the nucleus and apoptosis initiated at the mitochondria.

The extraction of volatile components from flowers of henna was studied using supercritical carbon dioxide at temperatures and pressures ranging from 35 to 55°C and 80 to 120 bar, respectively. A maximum extraction yield of 31 % from 2g of henna flowers was obtained at 45 °C and 120 bar. The composition of the extracts was investigated by gas chromatography technique. …

The Hollow Promise Of Freedom Of Conscience, Nadia N. Sawicki Apr 2012

The Hollow Promise Of Freedom Of Conscience, Nadia N. Sawicki

Cardozo Law Review

Two hundred years ago, Thomas Jefferson asserted that no law "ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience against the enterprises of the civil authority." Since then, freedom of conscience has continued to be heralded as a fundamental principle of American society. Indeed, many current policy debates - most notably in the medical and military contexts - are predicated on the theory that claims of conscience are worthy of legal respect. This Article, which offers a comprehensive account of the contemporary treatment of conscience, challenges established assumptions and seeks to reframe the debate about …

Unblocked Future: Why Gene Patents Won't Hinder Whole Genome Sequencing And Personalized Medicine, W. Nicholson Price Ii Apr 2012

Unblocked Future: Why Gene Patents Won't Hinder Whole Genome Sequencing And Personalized Medicine, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Cardozo Law Review

Whole-genome sequencing has been hailed as the crucial next step in personalized medicine. It has also been described as likely violating hundreds - if not thousands - of pre-existing patents on individual genes. These claims of patent infringement, however, are usually made without detailed analysis. Instead of stating that infringement definitely occurs, or in what circumstances it occurs, the discussion of whole-genome sequencing mentions that some claims may be typically infringed, but some may be invalid, and leaves the matter there. This Article seeks to provide a detailed analysis of the ways that whole-genome sequencing may infringe extant gene patents, …

Comparison Of Regional Eggshell Porosity Between The Brood Parasitic Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) And Its Hosts: The Dickcissel (Spiza Americana), And Two Non-Parasitic Relatives, The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus) And The Common Grackle (Quiscalus Quiscula)., Brittany Childs Apr 2012

Comparison Of Regional Eggshell Porosity Between The Brood Parasitic Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) And Its Hosts: The Dickcissel (Spiza Americana), And Two Non-Parasitic Relatives, The Red-Winged Blackbird (Agelaius Phoeniceus) And The Common Grackle (Quiscalus Quiscula)., Brittany Childs

Honors Projects

The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) is a generalist brood parasite that lays eggs in the nests of many host species, including the Dickcissel (Spiza americana) and two non-parasitic relatives: the Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) and the Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula). Cowbird eggs reportedly hatch sooner than equivalently-sized host eggs, presumably via accelerated embryonic development enabled by a greater eggshell porosity and consequently greater gas exchange. However, the distribution of pores among apical, equatorial and basal eggshell regions within cowbirds and host species is undetermined. I tested the hypothesis that equatorial porosity would …

Economic Assimilation Of Chinese Immigrants In The United States: Is There Wage Convergence With Natives?, Yujie Wu Apr 2012

Economic Assimilation Of Chinese Immigrants In The United States: Is There Wage Convergence With Natives?, Yujie Wu

Honors Projects

Asian Americans are often referred to as the “model minority” due to perceptions of their high income and educational attainment; yet relatively little is known about their economic assimilation experience. The purpose of this study is to determine economic assimilation of Chinese immigrants over time. This research follows a cohort of Chinese immigrants from 1994 to 2011 and compares their earnings performance with natives that have similar educational attainment. Multiple regression analysis is used to analyze data from the Current Population Survey. Results show that, although the cohort of Chinese immigrants initially has earnings substantially lower than the natives, it …
