In order to establish an efficient in vitro propagation protocol for Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Murashige and Skoog (MS) and woody plant medium (WPM) with different concentrations and types of auxin and cytokinin were used. The leaf explants of G. jasminoides were cultured on MS and WPM medium containing 3% sucrose and different concentrations of NAA, IBA, IAA, 2,4-D as aux-in and TDZ & Kn as cytokinin with range of 0-5 mg l-1 in order to obtain callus, shoot and root formation. This research was made to study the antimicrobial activity of fungal isolates from different regions of maritime, Antarctica, namely, King George Island and Greenwich Island (Barrientos Island, Dee Island and Ambato point). A total of 17 isolates composed of 7 mesophilic and 10 psychrotrophic fungi were tested in-vitro against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and yeast human pathogens. Initial antimicrobial activity screening of Antarctic isolates was made using plug assay method. Five test-microorganisms namely Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used. Mutations in the APC tumour suppressor gene cause Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a predisposition to colorectal cancer. This condition is characterized by adenomatous polyp formation in the colon and rectum which may advance to malignancy if not detected and treated early. FAP is 100% penetrant and segregates in an autosomal dominant manner. Screening for mutation in the APC gene is part of the preemptive genetic screening and risk assessment efforts for individuals with high risk of FAP. One of the well-studied neurotrophic factors is nerve growth factor (NGF), which is required for the growth and differentiation of dorsal root ganglion and sympathetic ganglion neurons. A survey through floristic inspection of home gardens and semi-structured interviews with home garden owners were carried out at 94 home at various villages in Peninsular Malaysia from June through December of 2008. The main aims of this study were to investigate the combined effects of a natural compound 1’S-1’-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) with cisplatin (CDDP) on human cervical carcinoma cells Ca Ski, and to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) asscociated with response towards ACA and/or CDDP. Data obtained from MTT cell viability assays indicated that both ACA and CDDP induced dose- and time-dependent cytotoxicity on Ca Ski cells when used as a standalone agent. The in vitro studies also demonstrated that ACA potentiates the cytotoxic effects of CDDP when used in combination through synergistic interactions. The phytochemical study on the leaves of Litsea grandis and on the barks of Litsea lancifolia involved extraction and separation of alkaloids by using dichloromethane as a solvent. The crude alkaloids obtained were subjected to extensive chromatographic techniques such as thin layer chromatography (TLC) and column chromatography (CC). The structural elucidations of the purified alkaloids were performed with the aid of spectroscopic methods notably 1D-NMR (1H, 13C, DEPT) and 2D-NMR(COSY, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY), UV, IR and LCMS-IT-TOF. Two phase pure copper sulfides, rhombohedral phase digenite (Cu9S5) and hexagonal phase covellite (CuS) have been successfully prepared via hydrothermal method using copper nitrate and sodium thiosulfate without any assisting agent. Goniothalamus tapisoides Mat Salleh, a plant from Annonaceae family, has been studied. Collected from Sarawak, the bark of this plant were dried and grounded before phytochemical study was performed. The chromatographic separation on the dichloromethane extracts of the bark gave eleven compounds – six known and five new. Six known compounds were identified as goniothalamin 1, pterodondiol 164, liriodenine 114, 9-deoxygoniopypyrone 15, benzamide 161 and cinnamic acid 155. Five new compounds are goniomicin A 157, goniomicin B 158, goniomicin C 159, goniomicin D 160 and tapisoidin 162.

Yogurt is popularly consumed because of its high digestibility, refreshing organoleptic properties and the healthy bacteria it contains. Milk incubated with starter culture (SC) at 41⁰C in the presence of plants (Momordica grosvenori, Psidium guajava, Lycium barbarum or Garcinia mangostana) water extract were studied to examine the effects on acidification, microbial growth, gelation and exopolysaccharide (EPS) content. The first part in this research, was screened six strains of Geomyces spp. isolated from King George Island in the Maritime Antarctica for chitinase enzyme. Initially, microfungi were grown at 4 °C and 25 °C on a series of plates each containing 1% colloid chitin, 0.5% (NH4)2SO4, 0.05% MgSO4.7H2O, 0.24% KH2PO4, 0.06% K2HPO4.3H2O and 1.5% agar. Colony radius and hydrolytic activity were measured and a relative activity index (RA) constructed. Relative activity values at 25 ˚C were higher than at 4 ˚C. The present investigation was designed to elucidate the chemoprotective effects of ethanolic extract of this plant against azoxymethane-induced (AOM) foci of aberrant crypts in rats. The study was to detect and characterize the selected antimicrobial resistance genes, class 1 integron, Salmonella Genomic Island 1 (SGI1) and plasmid profile of 41 selected multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella strains of human origin. Salmonella strains harbored blaCTX-M (33.3%) followed by blaTEM (25.0%), blaPSE-1 (13.9%), blaCMY-2 (8.3%) and blaSHV (2.8%) genes. Quinolone or fluoroquinolone-resistant strains harbored qnrB (75.0%) and qnrS (29.2%) genes. Concurrent presence of β-lactamase genes and qnr genes were detected in 9 strains, including S. Biofuel is biodegradable, nontoxic and suitable substitute for fossil fuels, and capable to reduce greenhouse gas like CO2, CO, HC and NOX emissions. The study investigated the use of waste date from date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera) as a source of bio-ethanol production that could be used as a fuel. The bioethanol was produced by fermentation process using the waste dates as a substrates for yeast and enzymes such as cellulase and amylase.
