Plastic debris is the main cluster of solid waste component present in the marine environment. Anthropogenic activities namely recreational and fishing activities are believed to contribute to the abundance of plastic debris (1 – 30 mm in size) especially along the beach. Similarity searching tools are generally divided to two distinct groups: Alignment-based and alignment-free methods. There is no standard comparison between alignment-based and alignment-free methods` performance. In this project, I compared CLUSTALW, T-COFFEE and MUSCLE algorithms with four alignment-free methods, Kr, D2, D2z and MplusD to find out which of these methods are more efficient with respect to time and accuracy. In both alignment-based and alignment-free, results are represented by phylogenetic trees. Here, all phylogenetic trees are compared against the reference tree to determine how accurate the methods are. We studied bacterial community structure in three different sewage treatment plants (STPs), namely STP 1, 2 and 3, in Klang Valley. STP 1, 2 and 3 were located in residential, commercial and light-industrial areas, respectively. Cu and Pb pollution detected in STP 3 was shown to affect its sludge production and biomass. Investigation by 16S rRNA PCR-DGGE demonstrated that bacterial community structures in the three STPs were different; and heavy metal resistant bacteria were predominant at STP 3. A study was conducted to investigate the ecological parameters and glucomannan content of selected Amorphophallus spp. in Peninsular Malaysia. A survey and documentation of Amorphophallus spp. were carried out throughout Peninsular Malaysia and the ecological parameters were measured and quantified. Although much research has been focused on the therapeutic and medicinal effects of wild mushrooms, there is still paucity of information on the pharmacological properties of Marasmius species. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the cytotoxic and antioxidant activities of M. guyanensis (KUM 20044, KUM 20222, and KUM 20117), M. kanchingnensis (KUM 20160), Marasmius sp. Coral stone mosques of Maldives are ancient mosques assembled using finely shaped interlocking 'porite' coral stone from the reef, that have architectural features with coral carvings and detailed lacquer work. These mosques are among the earliest surviving buildings in the country where its cultural heritage is vanishing fast due to rapid changes and development. MicroRNAs are ~20-22nt non protein-coding RNA regulatory genes that posttranscriptionally regulate many protein–coding genes to influence critical biological and metabolic processes. While the number of known microRNA is increasing, there is no published data for microRNA in freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) a commercially cultured and economically important food species. Through deep parallel sequencing and an in silico data analysis approach, 327 miRNA families have been identified from small RNA libraries with reference to both the de novo transcriptome of M.rosenbergii obtained from RNA-Seq and to miRBase (Release 18.0, November 2011). Obesity is in rising prevalence globally and it has been associated with high mortality rate and other comorbidities. Obesity is a highly heritable disorder but genes responsible for hereditary variations remain to be largely elusive. Recent findings have shown that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the following genes predispose to the increased risk of obesity and obesity-related traits: leptin (LEP), melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), β2-adrenoceptor (ADRB2), insulin-induced gene 2 (INSIG2), syndecan 3 (SDC3), fat mass and obesity associated (FTO), resistin (RETN) and adiponectin (ADIPOQ). Compared to the rest of the brain, the cerebellum is a small but outstanding structure which is present in all vertebrates. It is a dorsally located metencephalic structure of the rhombencephalon and plays important roles in movements. As in other vertebrates, the cerebellum is expected to be regulating the control of fish movements; related to maintenance of posture and balance, and coordinated movements. The concentration of five heavy metals, namely copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) were determined in water, sediment, fish, cockles and shrimp collected from eight selected sites in Larut River and Sangga Besar River which are located in the state of Perak. This study is an interdisciplinary research that analyses written discourses in natural history through the genre analysis’ lens. Genres are explored and examined by drawing on insights gathered from different disciplines such as linguistics, communication and environmental humanities. Data collected comprise a corpus of selected natural history texts published by the Malaysian Nature Society, Malaysia’s oldest non-governmental environmental and conservation body. In forensic entomology, knowledge of insect taxonomy, development, behaviour and ecology is required to allow accurate data interpretation from entomological evidence in investigations. In this thesis, five forensic entomology related studies have been carried out and discussed in two Malaysian forensically important fly families, the Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae. These studies involve the taxonomy, species checklist, ecological distribution, dipteran succession pattern on pig carcasses in Sarawak and DNA-based species identification analysis. This study aims to investigate and analyze morpho-syntactic errors on ESL learners’ essays; it attempts to identify these errors, justifies and provides evidences, and establishes how lexical information affects the sentential structure. The subject of this study comprises of 36 narrative essays written by Sudanese university students, Minimalist Program is used as analytical tool. The results revealed that, agreement features, inflectional morphology, categorical features, and lexical projections of TP to be errors found in the study. Dynamics and trophic role of zooplankton community were studied in the Matang mangrove estuaries and adjacent coastal waters, Malaysia. Monthly zooplankton samples collected from May 2002 to October 2003 at five stations located from the upper estuary (7 km upstream) to 16 km offshore showed highest biomass and abundance of zooplankton at nearshore waters. Both standing stocks decreased towards upstream and offshore waters. Copepods (62% of total zooplankton abundance) dominated the zooplankton, followed by larvae of cirripede (18%) and polychaete (4%).
