Faulty Phrases: "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait", Jake K. Bates Jan 2012

Faulty Phrases: "Good Things Come To Those Who Wait", Jake K. Bates

The Intellectual Standard

"Good things come to those who wait" has become such a staple of English -speaking culture that it has been used in Guinness and Heinz ad campaigns. Just as Heinz encouraged ketchup consumers to endure the bottle's slow trickle, people use the words in a variety of contexts to encourage patience. A friend or parent may console a student anxious to receive essay results by declaring "good things come to those who waif' In honestly analyzing each of the words and the possible meanings interpreted from their interaction, without endowing any white-washed meaning, it should be easily observed that "good …

Making Human Rights Really Real, Jake K. Bates Jan 2012

Making Human Rights Really Real, Jake K. Bates

The Intellectual Standard

In lieu of Illinois Wesleyan's "Making Human Rights Real" endeavors this school year, questions arise concerning the meaning of human rights and how we can effectively apply such a concept in the world around us. The discussion of human rights has long been one of the most contested among political philosophers and ordinary citizens alike. And rightfully so, because its conclusions hold drastic implications for individuals everywhere at all times. In order to avoid a muddled debate on the subject, it is critical to concretely define human rights. Thus, the concept of a "human;' the concept of a "right:' and …

Swiss Foundation On Mine Action 2012 Annual Report, Fsd

Global CWD Repository

The adventure of the Swiss Foundation on Mine Action (FSD) started 16 years ago with demining activities and the destruction of antipersonnel mines. It is only natural that the FSD very quickly broadened the range of its activities to encompass all types of mines and unexploded ordnances of war.

Thanks to the know-how it acquired and to its experience in project management, FSD was able to successfully embark on new projects dealing with all types of explosives, be it in or on the ground like cluster munitions, battlefield clearance, ammunitions stockpile management and destruction of stocks.

Today our demining activities …

Possible Early Foraminiferans In Post-Sturtian (716-635 Ma) Cap Carbonates, Tanja Bosak, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Sara B. Pruss, Francis A. Macdonald, Andrew J. Gooday, Lilly Dalton, Emily D. Matys

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Foraminifera are an ecologically important group of modern heterotrophic amoeboid eukaryotes whose naked and testate ancestors are thought to have evolved ~1 Ga ago. However, the single-chambered agglutinated tests of these protists appear in the fossil record only after ca. 580 Ma, coinciding with the appearance of macro scopic and mineralized animals. Here we report the discovery of small, slender tubular microfossils in the Sturtian (ca. 716-635 Ma) cap carbonate of the Rasthof Formation in Namibia. The tubes are 200-1300 μm long and 20-70μm wide, and preserve apertures and variably wide lumens, folds, constrictions, and ridges. Their sometimes fl exible …

Significant Beneficial Effect Of At-1 Receptor Blockers (Sartans) In Stroke, Marwan S. Al-Nimer Jan 2012

Significant Beneficial Effect Of At-1 Receptor Blockers (Sartans) In Stroke, Marwan S. Al-Nimer

Neurosciences

Hypertension is the most important controllable and modifiable risk factor for stroke. The relationship between blood pressure and stroke mortality is strong and linear. Angiotensin receptor blockers (sartans) are competitive pharmacological antagonists of angiotensin II receptors, and some of them are approved for use in the treatment of hypertension. These drugs also show anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the cytokine levels. The anti-inflammatory effects of sartans play a role in reducing cerebral injury following stroke, and improve the outcome of stroke in terms of improving cognitive function. In humans, sartans are safe in hypertensive acute stroke patients and may offer advantages …

An Uncommon Cause Of Brachial Plexus Injury, Bassam M. Addas Jan 2012

An Uncommon Cause Of Brachial Plexus Injury, Bassam M. Addas

Neurosciences

We report a case of left upper trunk neuropraxia following an uneventful case of lumbar spine fixation and fusion performed in the prone position. The cause of the injury was believed to be a very tight endotracheal tube tie in addition to the patient’s head turned to one side; both caused a compression in the left supraclavicular region compressing the upper trunk of the brachial plexus. On literature review, there are limited reports of endotracheal tube tie causing upper trunk brachial plexus reported in the English literature. Attention and care needs to be exercised to avoid this largely preventable complication.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Over the past several years, the authors of this work have investigated external structures of microdrile oligochaetes using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both published and still-unpublished data have revealed new structures of interest, especially those associated with mating, ciliate sense receptors, chaetae, and dorsal pores. Mating systems can be classified in 3 categories: grasping, coupling, and embracing. Ciliate sense receptors can be classified as poorly defined (unelevated), sensory buds, or papillae, and are provided with blunt cilia and/or sharp cilia. They are present along the whole body (including clitellum, budding, and regeneration zones), scattered on the prostomium, peristomium, and pygidium, …
