New Record Of Lynx Lynx (L., 1758) In Turkey (Mammalia: Carnivora), İrfan Albayrak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This paper reports the morphological characteristics of a subadult lynx, Lynx lynx, collected in 2005 from Ardanuç in Artvin Province. Pelage color, hair structure, and some cranial measurements of this specimen and other recent records of Turkish lynxes are given, including that from Beyaz Dağ in Şırnak Province in the southeastern part of Turkey collected during field work and a skin from an unknown locality in Isparta. It was concluded that Turkish lynxes are likely to represent the subspecies L. lynx dinniki based on a comparison of morphometric values given in the literature.

Distribution Of Aphanius Dispar Dispar (Rüppell, 1829) Populations In Iran, With A New Record From Western Iran (Actinopterygii: Cyprinodontidae), Yazdan Keivany, Majid Ghorbani
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The distribution of Aphanius dispar dispar (Rüppell, 1829) populations in Iran, which are mostly known from the eastern and southern parts of the country, and a new population in western Iran about 50 km northwest of Ilam City and 20 km east of the Iran-Iraq border are recorded. The habitat is an odd environment with sulfide water in a remote area. This is the first report of a population of this species in western Iran and at a latitude this high within its distribution range.

The Importance Of Moral Construal: Moral Versus Non-Moral Construal Elicits Faster, More Extreme, Universal Evaluations Of The Same Actions, Jay J. Van Bavel, Dominic J. Packer, Ingrid J. Haas, William A. Cunningham
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Over the past decade, intuitionist models of morality have challenged the view that moral reasoning is the sole or even primary means by which moral judgments are made. Rather, intuitionist models posit that certain situations automatically elicit moral intuitions, which guide moral judgments. We present three experiments showing that evaluations are also susceptible to the influence of moral versus non-moral construal. We had participants make moral evaluations (rating whether actions were morally good or bad) or non-moral evaluations (rating whether actions were pragmatically or hedonically good or bad) of a wide variety of actions. As predicted, moral evaluations were faster, …
How Indeterminism Shapes Ecologists’ Contributions To Managing Socio-Ecological Systems, Sarah Michaels, Andrew Tyre
How Indeterminism Shapes Ecologists’ Contributions To Managing Socio-Ecological Systems, Sarah Michaels, Andrew Tyre
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
To make a difference in policy making about socio-ecological systems, ecologists must grasp when decision makers are amenable to acting on ecological expertise and when they are not. To enable them to do so we present a matrix for classifying a socio-ecological system by the extent of what we don’t know about its natural components and the social interactions that affects them. We use four examples, Midcontinent Mallards, Laysan Ducks, Pallid Sturgeon, and Rocky Mountain Grey Wolves to illustrate how the combination of natural and social source of indeterminism matters. Where social indeterminism is high, ecologists can expand the range …

The Status Of Five State-Listed Tidal Plant Species In New Hampshire With Emphasis On Potential Impacts Of Sea Level Rise, Lauren A. Kras
The Status Of Five State-Listed Tidal Plant Species In New Hampshire With Emphasis On Potential Impacts Of Sea Level Rise, Lauren A. Kras
Master's Theses and Capstones
Tidal habitat in New Hampshire is restricted to 162 miles along coasts and estuaries. Limited area combined with anthropogenic impacts has caused 27 tidal plant species to be listed as threatened or endangered. In 2009 and 2010, the status of four threatened species: Eleocharis parvula, Samolus valerandi, Lilaeopsis chinensis , and Agalinis maritima and one endangered species Salicornia bigelovii was examined. To guide management and conservation, the historic and current distributions were compared and habitat features were determined. All five species were stable; however, S. valerandi and L. chinensis appear threatened by sea level rise and coastal squeeze as they …

Circuit Development In The Dorsal Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (Dlgn) Of The Mouse., Tania Seabrook
Circuit Development In The Dorsal Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (Dlgn) Of The Mouse., Tania Seabrook
Theses and Dissertations
The visual system is one of the most widely used and best understood sensory systems and the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the mouse has emerged as a model for investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the development and activity-dependent refinement of sensory connections. Thalamic organization is highly conserved throughout species and the dLGN of the mouse possesses many features common to higher mammals, such as carnivores and primates. Two general classes of neuron are present within the dLGN, thalamocortical relay cells and interneurons, both of which receive direct retinal input. Axons of relay cells exit dLGN and …
Targeting The Endocannabinoid System To Reduce Inflammatory Pain, Sudeshna Ghosh
Targeting The Endocannabinoid System To Reduce Inflammatory Pain, Sudeshna Ghosh
Theses and Dissertations
The endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids) anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG) exert their effects predominantly through cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, but these actions are short-lived because of rapid hydrolysis by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), respectively. Selective inhibition of either enzyme elevates CNS levels of the appropriate endocannabinoid and produces analgesic effects with fewer psychomimetic side effects than Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary active constituent of marijuana. While cannabinoid receptor agonists and FAAH inhibitors reliably produce anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperalgesic effects in the carrageenan test and other inflammatory pain models, much less is known about the consequences of inhibiting …
The Role Of Fyn And B-Cell Expressed Adam10 In Early B Cell Development, Germinal Center Formation And Terminal B Cell Differentiation, Natalia Chaimowitz
The Role Of Fyn And B-Cell Expressed Adam10 In Early B Cell Development, Germinal Center Formation And Terminal B Cell Differentiation, Natalia Chaimowitz
Theses and Dissertations
In these studies we sought to determine the role of Fyn kinase and ADAM10 in B cell biology. A disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) is a zinc dependent proteinase related to matrix metalloproteinases. ADAM10 has emerged as a key regulator of cellular processes by cleaving and shedding extracellular domains of multiple transmembrane receptors and ligands. In particular, ADAM10 has been identified as a key regulator of lymphocyte development. Here we report that ADAM10 is dispensable for early B cell development within the bone marrow. However, deletion of ADAM10 from all peripheral B cells or in post-switch cells leads to severe …
Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors On Selective Cellular Subtypes In Epileptogenic Malformed Cortex, William Bruch
Group I Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors On Selective Cellular Subtypes In Epileptogenic Malformed Cortex, William Bruch
Theses and Dissertations
Cortical malformations from altered development are common causes of human epilepsy. The cellular mechanisms responsible for the epileptic state of cortex remain unclear and a significant portion of these cases do not respond to treatment. Previous electrophysiological recordings in the Jacobs lab in a rat polymicrogyria model indicated an increased response to group I metabotropic glutamate receptor agonists in the region adjacent to the malformation (PMZ). In addition there was a novel response in low threshold spiking (LTS) interneurons via mGluR5 activation. To determine whether cell specific expression of these receptors was altered in malformed cortex immunohistochemical stains were performed …
The Role Of High Affinity Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors On Anxiety-Like Behavior: A Study In Female Mice, Jessicka Hall
The Role Of High Affinity Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors On Anxiety-Like Behavior: A Study In Female Mice, Jessicka Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Tobacco dependence is high in women who suffer from anxiety disorders yet little is known about the contributions of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) on anxiety-like behavior. β2*nAChRs (*denotes assembly with other subunits) are the most abundantly expressed nAChRs in the brain yet little is known about the contributions of β2*nAChRs on anxiety-like behavior in female mice. In this study, antagonism and nicotine effects on anxiety-like behavior was investigated across the life span in 6, 12 and 24-month-old drug-naïve knockout (KO), heterozygous (HET) and a gain of function α6L9S mice and wild type (WT). HET mice showed increased sensitivity to di-hydrobeta-erythroidine …
Non-Canonical Roles For Stat1 And Stat2 In Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Fasting Homeostasis., Jennifer Sisler
Non-Canonical Roles For Stat1 And Stat2 In Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Fasting Homeostasis., Jennifer Sisler
Theses and Dissertations
The signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) and 2 (STAT2) are primarily activated by interferons and play a central role in orchestrating responses to a variety of pathogens by activating the transcription of nuclear encoded genes that mediate antiviral, antigrowth and immune surveillance responses. In addition to their nuclear effects, we report that STAT1 and STAT2 inhibit the expression of mitochondrial encoded mRNAs by activating type I interferons (IFNβ) under basal conditions. STAT1-/- livers also exhibit elevated levels of nuclear encoded components of the electron transport chain (ETC). Treatment of wild-type mice with IFNβ inhibits both mitochondrial and …
Transient Camk-Ii Activation Is Necessary For Left-Right Asymmetry In The Zebrafish Embryo, Ludmila Francescatto
Transient Camk-Ii Activation Is Necessary For Left-Right Asymmetry In The Zebrafish Embryo, Ludmila Francescatto
Theses and Dissertations
Despite external bilateral symmetry, the internal organs of vertebrates are asymmetrically arranged. The development of Left-Right (LR) asymmetry is dependent on the activity of a ciliated organ known as the Kupffer’s vesicle (KV) or the embryonic node, in zebrafish and mouse, respectively. Cilia beating within the KV are essential to generate a counterclockwise flow of fluid, which leads to left-sided Ca2+ elevation. Ca2+ is a crucial morphogenic second messenger during vertebrate development. Ca2+ elevation activates targets, such as CaMK-II, which is also known as the multifunctional Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase. Studies have linked CaMK-II to secretion (mediated through synapsin I) and …

Minimalist Ensemble Algorithms For Genome-Wide Protein Localization Prediction, J.-R. Lin, A. M. Mondal, R. Liu, Jianjun Hu
Faculty Publications
Background
Computational prediction of protein subcellular localization can greatly help to elucidate its functions. Despite the existence of dozens of protein localization prediction algorithms, the prediction accuracy and coverage are still low. Several ensemble algorithms have been proposed to improve the prediction performance, which usually include as many as 10 or more individual localization algorithms. However, their performance is still limited by the running complexity and redundancy among individual prediction algorithms.
Results
This paper proposed a novel method for rational design of minimalist ensemble algorithms for practical genome-wide protein subcellular localization prediction. The algorithm is based on combining a feature …

Water for irrigation is a major constraint in the Great Plains, and it is expected that the proportion of irrigated crop land to grow irrigated wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), which requires less water than other crops, will increase to conserve irrigation water. ‘NI04421’ (Reg. No. CV-1064, PI 659690) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed cooperatively by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS and released in 2010 by the developing institutions and the Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station. NI04421 was released primarily for its superior performance under irrigation and rainfed conditions in western Nebraska and …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
October weaned cows had greater average BCS and BW compared to December weaned cows; however, the level of supplementation on winter range did not impact BCS or BW. Subsequent pregnancy rates (96.5% - 98.5%) were not influenced by weaning date or any winter treatments. Steer progeny showed no differences in feedlot entry BW, final BW, DMI, ADG, or carcass characteristics; and there were no differences in percentage cycling before breeding or in pregnancy rates of heifer progeny.

The environment that the oocyte develops in (follicle) and the mRNA that is produced (mRNA abundance) during development were examined. Androgen levels within the follicle were higher in heifers (≤ 2 years) that never established a pregnancy compared to cows that stayed in the herd at least 3 years and had at least one successful pregnancy. These high androgen levels were associated with increased abundance of several candidate mRNAs in the cumulus-oocyte complex (COC), which includes the oocyte and somatic cells immediately surrounding the oocyte, isolated from the dominant follicle. The data suggest that androgen levels represent a marker for …

Heifers (n = 500) were fed 0.5 mg/ day of melengestrol acetate for 14 days, and 19 days later, administered PGF2α. Following PGF2α, heifers were detected for estrus and artificially inseminated (AI) approximately 18-24 hours later. Three days following PGF2α, heifers not detected in estrus were given GnRH and AI. Heifers were AI with one of two sires, either conventional or sexed semen, creating four possibilities for AI sire. Pregnancy rate was greater for conventional than sexed semen. In addition, more heifers detected in estrus were pregnant than heifers time AI. Further research is …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Pedigree data from the American Simmental Association from 1986-2008 were used to analyze the pedigree structure and changes in generation intervals over time within the Simmental breed. The number of breeders that accounted for 10% of sires of sires (SS), sires of dams (SD), dams of sires (DS), and dams of dams (DD) were 3, 5, 5, and 16, respectively. States with the greatest influenceon the four pathways of selection (SS, SD, DS, and DD) included Montana, South Dakota, Kansas, and Texas. In general, generation intervals for the four pathways decreased by year of birth over the time span of …
Economic Analysis Of Keeping A Nonpregnant Cow, Trenton Bohling, Darrell R. Mark, Richard Rasby, David R. Smith
Economic Analysis Of Keeping A Nonpregnant Cow, Trenton Bohling, Darrell R. Mark, Richard Rasby, David R. Smith
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Abnormally large numbers of nonpregnant cows in cow-calf herds may be caused by diseases like trichomoniasis or a culmination of environmental factors such as heat stress during breeding and abnormally cold winters and wet spring conditions. Typically, producers sell nonpregnant females and replace them with bred heifers or cows. The five-year cash flow budgets developed in this study suggest that in some circumstances it is economically feasible to keep a nonpregnant cow.

Beef Heifer Development And Profitability, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Richard N. Funston Funston
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The determination of the ideal breeding size of beef replacement females is traditionally centered on maximizing pregnancy rate. Relevant physical and economic relationships were combined into a bioeconomic systems model that identified key profit factors. This system-wide approach encapsulated the physical relationships with relevant costs and revenues, including annual and seasonal variations and measures relative to profitability through the application of an incomplete or modified profit function. Optimaloutcomes were relative to heifer size and management regime.

Two growing experiments compared effects of feeding a diet consisting of cornstalks or wheat straw and modified distillers grains when ensiled or mixed fresh daily. Wheat-straw based diets also were compared at different moisture levels (50% and 70%) when ensiled and mixed daily. In Experiment 1, steers fed ensiled diets had greater DMI compared to diets mixed daily. Moisture level and crop residue type had no effect on steer performance. In Experiment 2, steers were offered the supplements and a hay mix to determine palatability and forage replacement. Moisture level had no effect, cornstalks were consumed better than wheat straw, …

Spoilage Of Wet Distillers Grains Plus Solubles And Feed Value, Jana L. Harding, Kelsey M. Rolfe, Cody J. Schneider Schneider, Brandon L. Nuttelman, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Performance of growing or finishing steers fed wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) from a silo bag (nonspoiled) or bunker (spoiled) was studied. Spoiled WDGS lost DM, as well as decreased in fat, NDF, and CP. Even though DM was lost, and composition of the spoiled WDGS changed, the spoiled WDGS had no effect on finishing cattle performance, but it did affect DMI of the growing steers consuming high forage diets.

Metabolism Of Finishing Diets Containing Condensed Distillers Solubles And Wdgs, Anna C. Pesta, Adam L. Shreck, Terry J. Klopfenstein Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A metabolism study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding wet distillers grains (WDGS) and condensed distillers solubles (CDS), both separately and in combination, on the metabolism characteristics of feedlot steers. Diet had no impact on nutrient digestibility. Average ruminal pH was lower for steers fed CDS than for those fed WDGS alone, and steers fed WDGS spent less time below pH 5.6 than steers fed diets with no WDGS. Inclusion of CDS decreased ruminal acetate concentration and acetate to propionate ratio compared to diets with less or no CDS.

The relationship between ruminal degradable sulfur intake (RDSI) and ruminal hydrogen sulfide concentration ([H2S]) as well as ruminal parameters were evaluated. Steers were fed diets containing organic, inorganic, and wet distiller grains with solubles (WDGS) sources of sulfur, as well as a control diet. A laboratory procedure was developedto measure RDS of ingredients. RDSI explained 65% of [H2S] variation, whereas total sulfur intake and ruminal pH, individually, explained 29 and 12%, respectively. Availability of sulfur for ruminal reduction is more important than total sulfur in the diet.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Angus crossbred yearling heifers and steers (n = 144 and 168, respectively) were used to evaluate effects of feeding soybeans and additional potassium (K) on performance and tympanic temperature (TT) of cattle under heat stress and seasonal summer conditions. In Experiment 1, cattle fed diets supplemented with potassium carbonate had lower ADG and tended to have decreased water intake, G:F, and dressing percent. In Experiment 2, cattle fed diets supplemented with K with or without whole soybeans had lower or tended to have lower TT than control cattle during the hottest portion of the day (between 1300 and 2100 hours).

Effects of barley starch:NDF ratio and DDGS inclusion on feedlot performance, carcass characteristics, and N and P mass balance were evaluated in a commercial feedyard in Alberta, Canada. Yearling heifers were assigned randomly at reimplant to four treatments (0 or 20% DDGS and LOW or HIGH starch:NDF barley). Feeding LOW starch:NDF barley improved feedlot performance and increased N retention. Feeding 20% DDGS increased DMI, had a slight negative impact on F:G, and increased N and P losses.

Steers fed (0.6% BW) modified distillers grains plus solubles on the ground had increased ADG and BW at the end of summer grazing and were more profitable. Supplemented steers were fed 24 fewer days to reach feedlot harvest goal, had greater LM area, and lower marbling. Steers sorted on feedlot entry BW had increased HCW, marbling, and YG, but percentage overweight carcasses and profitability were similar. Steers supplemented during summer grazing had $11.80/ animal greater overall profit.
