Complex Interactions Between Marine Sponges And Their Symbiotic Microbial Communities, Christopher John Freeman Jan 2012

Complex Interactions Between Marine Sponges And Their Symbiotic Microbial Communities, Christopher John Freeman

All ETDs from UAB

Microbial communities spanning nearly all evolutionary lineages of bacteria and archaea are found within many species of marine sponges. Although diverse microbial metabolic pathways may benefit sponge hosts, minimal experimental evidence exists supporting host assimilation of symbiont-derived nutrients. By coupling manipulative shading experiments with stable isotope analyses of isolated microbial and sponge cell fractions, I provide evidence that some sponge hosts assimilate a large proportion of their C and N from microbial symbionts and that these inputs are crucial to host performance. Interestingly, however, these interactions are highly variable across host species, suggesting that overall symbiont abundance alone does not …

Investigating Potential Novel Angiogenic And Immunogenic Properties Of Heme Oxygenase-1, Carl Antonio Frizell Jan 2012

Investigating Potential Novel Angiogenic And Immunogenic Properties Of Heme Oxygenase-1, Carl Antonio Frizell

All ETDs from UAB

INVESTIGATING POTENTIAL NOVEL ANGIOGENIC AND IMMUNOGENIC PROPERTIES OF HEME OXYGENASE-1 According to the American Heart Association and Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, cardiovascular diseases comprise the primary causes of death in the United States. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an inducible microsomal enzyme, catalyzes the rate limiting step in heme degradation releasing equimolar amounts of biliverdin, iron and carbon monoxide. Importantly, the induction of HO-1 is an adaptive response that affords protection in these disease states and several others. Expression of HO-1 has been demonstrated in several disease states and pathophysiological processes, including ischemia-reperfusion, inflammation and organ transplantation. This protection is …

Myosin Ii Regulates Actin Dynamics Critical For Structural Plasticity And Fear Memory Formation, Cristin Gavin Jan 2012

Myosin Ii Regulates Actin Dynamics Critical For Structural Plasticity And Fear Memory Formation, Cristin Gavin

All ETDs from UAB

Dynamic changes to the actin cytoskeleton are required for synaptic plasticity and long-term memory formation. However, the molecular mechanisms that mediate filamentous actin (F-actin) dynamics during both activity-dependent synaptic potentiation and long-term memory encoding are poorly understood. Myosin II motor proteins are highly expressed in actin-rich growth structures in neurons, including dendritic spines. Recent work demonstrates that these molecular machines mobilize F-actin in response to synaptic stimulation and are required for memory encoding in CA1 hippocampus of rodents. The aims of this project were two-fold. First, we sought to establish if myosin II regulates actin filament polymerization necessary for structural …

Calcium Signaling And The Regulation Of Ecdysteroid Hormone Synthesis By Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Molting Glands, Hsiang-Yin Chen Jan 2012

Calcium Signaling And The Regulation Of Ecdysteroid Hormone Synthesis By Blue Crab (Callinectes Sapidus) Molting Glands, Hsiang-Yin Chen

All ETDs from UAB

In crustaceans, cellular events that lead to molting are triggered by steroid molting hormones, ecdysteroids. The synthesis of ecdysteroids is negatively regulated by molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) mediated by one or more cyclic nucleotide second messengers. Existing data indicate ecdysteroidogenesis is positively regulated by Ca2+ through the activation of phosphodiesterases (PDEs). The studies presented in this dissertation composed the first report of intracellular Ca2+ measurement in Y-organ cells from any crustacean species. Studies demonstrated that elevated cytosolic Ca2+ levels in Y-organ cells were associated with increased hemolymphatic ecdysteroid titer. Measurement of Ca2+ levels in Y-organ cells in a natural molting cycle …

Partnership Representation In Public Communications: An Analysis Of Community-Engaged Universities' Websites, Christy Kayser Arrazattee Jan 2012

Partnership Representation In Public Communications: An Analysis Of Community-Engaged Universities' Websites, Christy Kayser Arrazattee

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the ways in which campus-community partnerships are represented in public communications produced by community-engaged institutions of higher education. Leading scholars of campus-community partnerships and service-learning agree that such relationships should be based on a reciprocal exchange between partners. In public relations endeavors, however, professionals concentrating solely on communicating the university’s achievements may overlook the equal contributions of the community partner. This study analyzed website content and universities publications from six colleges nationally recognized for their community-engagement efforts. Using quantitative and qualitative analysis, web content was analyzed for indicators of reciprocity developed from foundational literature regarding campus-community partnerships. …

Repeatability Of Prolactin Responses To Sulpiride In Mares And Geldings And The Effect Of Pergolide And Cabergoline, Rebekah C. Hebert Jan 2012

Repeatability Of Prolactin Responses To Sulpiride In Mares And Geldings And The Effect Of Pergolide And Cabergoline, Rebekah C. Hebert

LSU Master's Theses

Four experiments were conducted in an effort to develop a method, based on prolactin secretion, for assessing the efficacy and duration of activity of dopaminergic agonists for the treatment of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in horses. In the first experiment, prolactin response to a low dose of the dopamine antagonist, sulpiride, was generally repeatable in estrogen-primed geldings in winter over 8 every-other-day challenges. It was concluded that estrogen-primed, sulpiride-challenged geldings in winter could serve as a model for the study of potential dopaminergic drugs for the treatment of PPID in horses. The second experiment was performed in the summer …

Impact Of Teaching Style On Student Learning Of Evolution, Laurie Font Jan 2012

Impact Of Teaching Style On Student Learning Of Evolution, Laurie Font

LSU Master's Theses

Natural selection is a topic that is laden with misconceptions. These misconceptions are often not addressed, and students can leave a biology classroom with the same incorrect ideas that they entered with. These misconceptions can be identified and addressed by using the Concept Inventory of Natural Selection (CINS). Furthermore, by teaching using methods that encourage hands-on, inquiry based techniques, students are more apt to reconcile these misconceptions and have a deeper understanding of the natural selection process. The goal of my research was to show a positive correlation between reduction in student misconceptions about natural selection and inquiry based activities. …

This research consists of a two-part analysis: examination of macrobotanical remains from the 2009 field season and excavated human feces found in various contexts of the site …

Lentiviral Transduction Of Epigenetically Modified Bovine Adult Stem Cells, Meredith Kathleen Addison Jan 2012

Lentiviral Transduction Of Epigenetically Modified Bovine Adult Stem Cells, Meredith Kathleen Addison

LSU Master's Theses

Bovine adipose-derived stem cells (ADS), a form of adult stem cells, are somatic cells that have similar characteristics of embryonic stem (ES) cells. Bovine ADS cells possess multipotent capabilities and have been found to express pluripotency genes associated with ES cells. The unique properties of ADS cells make them a desirable source for reprogramming experiments. The goal of reprogramming experiments is to transform somatic cells from a differentiated state to a pluripotent state. When somatic cells reprogram, there are certain epigenetic changes or modifications that must occur in order to successfully reprogram the nucleus. Epigenetic modifications will change the chromatin …

Effective Knowledge Management System Implementation In Small Organisations., Orna Nicholl Jan 2012

Effective Knowledge Management System Implementation In Small Organisations., Orna Nicholl

Dissertations

Much of the key research in the field of Knowledge Management carries an inherent set of assumptions as to the nature of the organisations under investigation, such as the fact that the organisation is a large one. As a consequence of this, Knowledge Management papers tend to focus on the distinctions such as: management-led initiatives versus grassroots initiatives, and the importance of inter-departmental communications, but for smaller organisations these types of issues are minimised or completely absent. This project will look at models and techniques from the existing body of Knowledge Management literature (with its focus on larger organisations) and …

Biochemical Links Between Hormonal Mediators Of Psychological Stress And The Expression Of Muc1 In Prostate Cancer Cells, Kristina Andrijauskaite

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

A growing body of scientific evidence has demonstrated that chronic psychological stress can not only increase the growth and metastasis of tumors through a number of mechanisms, such as by an increase of VEGF and Bcl-2, but also can decrease the survival of cancer patients. However, no studies have reported the effect of psychological stress with respect to the tumor marker MUC1. Therefore, building upon previous research, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the stress hormones cortisol and norepinephrine on the tumor marker MUC1, which is highly associated with tumor cell metastasis and is …

Star Messengers, Paul Zimet, Ellen Maddow, Smith College. Kahn Liberal Arts Institute Jan 2012

Star Messengers, Paul Zimet, Ellen Maddow, Smith College. Kahn Liberal Arts Institute

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Star Messengers is a musical theater work about two scientists, Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler, who changed our view of the universe. Writer Paul Zimet and composer Ellen Maddow have created a carnival of genres—opera, Commedia dell'Arte, Strindbergian Dream Play, and contemporary dance/theater—to produce a theatrical language that conveys the wonder of Galileo's and Kepler's discoveries. While some aspects of Galileo's life and discoveries are well known, hardly anything is popularly known of his scientific contemporaries. Johannes Kepler's realization that the planets moved not in perfect circles, but in elliptical paths, was a leap of mind as extraordinary as that …

From Goods To A Good Life: Intellectual Property And Global Justice, Madhavi Sunder Jan 2012

From Goods To A Good Life: Intellectual Property And Global Justice, Madhavi Sunder

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Most scholarship on intellectual property considers this law from the standpoint of law and economics. Under this conventional wisdom, intellectual property is simply a tool for promoting innovative products, from iPods to R2D2. In this highly original book Madhavi Sunder calls for a richer understanding of intellectual property law’s effects on social and cultural life. Intellectual property does more than incentivize the production of more goods. This law fundamentally affects the ability of citizens to live a good life. Intellectual property law governs the abilities of human beings to make and share culture, and to profit from this enterprise in …

The Eye Alone Is The Judge: Images And Design Patents, Rebecca Tushnet Jan 2012

The Eye Alone Is The Judge: Images And Design Patents, Rebecca Tushnet

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Design patents are an area of intellectual property law focused entirely on the visual, unlike copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or the various sui generis protections that have occasionally been enacted for specific types of innovation. Judges and lawyers in general are highly uncomfortable with images, yet design patents force direct legal engagement with images. This short piece offers an outsider’s view of what design patent law has to say about the use of images as legal tools, why tests for design patent infringement are likely to stay unsatisfactory, and what lessons other fields of intellectual property, specifically copyright, might …

Encountering Asian Art Through Joint Faculty-Student Field Research And Museum Curatorship: Ignatian Parallels, Susan Rodgers

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

The early Jesuits placed the arts at the center of their pedagogy and worldview. Taking cues from such Ignatian teachings on crossing cultural boundaries with respect and humility, and on the an emphasis on the centrality of art in human life, this article reports on a recent ethnographic fieldwork-based encounter with the Balinese arts, specifically ritual textile dyeing and weaving in the village of Tenganan Pegeringsingan, east Bali. This fieldwork on geringsing ceremonial cloth went toward a small college exhibition at the College of the Holy Cross in Spring 2011, an exhibition designed to skewer some of the more popular, …

Social Networking And The Employment Relationship: Is Your Boss Creeping Up On You?, Michael Keliher Jan 2012

Social Networking And The Employment Relationship: Is Your Boss Creeping Up On You?, Michael Keliher

LLM Theses

There are currently over 900 million Facebook users worldwide (and counting). With increased use of social networking comes new concerns for personal privacy and control of social networking information. More and more, Facebook activity trickles its way into offline contexts, perhaps none more so than the employment context. A new trend in the hiring process is social networking background checks, where some employers go so far as to request a candidate's Facebook password. Not only this, but the frequency of Facebook activity resulting in employment law disputes is increasing, and has even been found to constitute sufficient grounds for discipline …

Situation Analysis Of Behavior Change Communication Activities In Bihar: A Step Towards Developing A Comprehensive Bcc Strategy, M.E. Khan, Isha Bhatnagar, Avishek Hazra, Mukesh Kumar

Reproductive Health

A situation analysis undertaken by the Population Council in Bihar, India assessed a number of contributing factors to a behavior change communication (BCC) strategy. Social norms and practices can be changed if appropriate messages are delivered through a combination of communication channels including mass, mid-, and other media, coupled with improved interactions between frontline healthcare workers and target populations at family and community levels. The analysis notes that effective BCC strategy should be measured in terms of actual behavior change. Impact of BCC activities can be measured by immediate outputs and intermediate and final outcomes depending on implementation duration. The …

5 Cm Gap Injury Repair: Growth Factor Support And Functional Analysis In A Rabbit Common Peroneal Nerve Model, Princy K. Prasad Jan 2012

5 Cm Gap Injury Repair: Growth Factor Support And Functional Analysis In A Rabbit Common Peroneal Nerve Model, Princy K. Prasad

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Nerve conduits have shown to successfully bridge nerve gaps of ≤ 3 cm; however repair of longer, mixed or motor nerve gaps still remains a clinical challenge. In order to study regeneration techniques in clinically relevant long gaps, larger animal models are required. Standardized methods to evaluate functional outcome are necessary to clinically translate experimental treatments. In this study, the capability of the biodegradable and transparent cross-linked doped polyester elastomer (CUPE) to serve as a nerve conduit material in a multiluminal nerve conduit across a 5 cm gap in a rabbit common peroneal nerve model was evaluated. The effect of …

Evaluation Of Tissue Response From The Regenerative Multielectrode Array (Remi) Implant Using Atf-3 And Cjun, Sarita Bhetawal Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Tissue Response From The Regenerative Multielectrode Array (Remi) Implant Using Atf-3 And Cjun, Sarita Bhetawal

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Currently available peripheral nerve regenerative interfaces such as the sieve and the micro-channel regenerative electrode, intended to be used for the control and natural feel from advanced robotic prosthetic devices, eventually fail due to nerve damage due to axonopathy. The Regenerative Multi-electrode array (REMI) developed in our lab overcomes this limitation by providing a non-obstructive pathway for regenerating axons. However, it is possible that the mismatch at the electrode-tissue interface may cause axonal injury during limb stretching. In order to determine if micro-motion at the REMI causes neuronal injury I evaluated the nuclear expression of Activating Transcription Factor 3 (ATF-3), …
