Scireader Enables Reading Of Medical Content With Instantaneous Definitions, Patrick R. Gradie, Megan Litster, Rinu Thomas, Jay Vyas, Martin Schiller Jan 2011

Scireader Enables Reading Of Medical Content With Instantaneous Definitions, Patrick R. Gradie, Megan Litster, Rinu Thomas, Jay Vyas, Martin Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Background

A major problem patients encounter when reading about health related issues is document interpretation, which limits reading comprehension and therefore negatively impacts health care. Currently, searching for medical definitions from an external source is time consuming, distracting, and negatively impacts reading comprehension and memory of the material.

Methods

SciReader was built as a Java application with a Flex-based front-end client. The dictionary used bySciReader was built by consolidating data from several sources and generating new definitions with a standardized syntax. The application was evaluated by measuring the percentage of words defined in different documents. A survey was used …

Dna Biochip And Methods Of Use, Arun Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Shree R. Singh, Souheil Zekri

USF Patents

The subject invention concerns materials and methods for detecting nucleic acid sequences. One aspect of the invention concerns a silicon-based “biochip” comprising nucleic acid immobilized thereon. In one embodiment, the silicon comprises microcavities. The nucleic acid to be assayed for the presence of one or more target nucleic acid sequences is immobilized on the silicon. A nucleic acid, such as an oligonucleotide probe, having a sequence substantially complementary to the target nucleic acid sequence can be used to detect the immobilized nucleic acid on the silicon. If the nucleic acid used for detection hybridizes with a target nucleic acid sequence, …

The Crime Of Aggression And Humanitarian Intervention On Behalf Of Women, Beth Van Schaack Jan 2011

The Crime Of Aggression And Humanitarian Intervention On Behalf Of Women, Beth Van Schaack

Faculty Publications

This article is part of a larger project to analyze the rarely-considered gender aspects of the crime of aggression and to explore whether or not the amendments adding the crime of aggression to the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) represent an advancement for women. This piece focuses on the potential for the new provisions to chill bona fide exercises of humanitarian intervention given that (1) the crime is expansively drafted to potentially cover all uses of sovereign force, (2) delegates rejected efforts by the United States to include an express exception for military operations launched to prevent the …

Cx3cl1 Reduces Neurotoxicity And Microglial Activation In A Rat Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Mibel M. Pabon, Adam D. Bachstetter, Charles E. Hudson, Carmelina Gemma, Paula C. Bickford

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is characterized by a progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. The cause of the neurodegeneration is unknown. Neuroinflammation has been clearly shown in Parkinson's disease and may be involved in the progressive nature of the disease. Microglia are capable of producing neuronal damage through the production of bioactive molecules such as cytokines, as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO). The inflammatory response in the brain is tightly regulated at multiple levels. One form of immune regulation occurs via neurons. Fractalkine (CX3CL1), produced by neurons, suppresses the activation of microglia. CX3CL1 …

INTRODUCTION: Microsomal prostaglandin E2 synthase-1 (mPGES-1) is an inducible enzyme that acts downstream of cyclooxygenase (COX) to specifically catalyze the conversion of prostaglandin (PG) H2 to PGE2. mPGES-1 plays a key role in inflammation, pain and arthritis; however, the role of mPGES-1 in fibrogenesis is largely unknown. Herein, we examine the role of mPGES-1 in a mouse model of skin scleroderma using mice deficient in mPGES-1.

METHODS: Wild type (WT) and mPGES-1 null mice were subjected to the bleomycin model of cutaneous skin scleroderma. mPGES-1 expressions in scleroderma fibroblasts and in fibroblasts derived from bleomycin-exposed mice were assessed by Western …

Binding Of Tolbutamide To Glycated Human Serum Albumin, K.S. Joseph, Jeanethe Anguizola, David S. Hage Jan 2011

Binding Of Tolbutamide To Glycated Human Serum Albumin, K.S. Joseph, Jeanethe Anguizola, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

The presence of elevated levels of glucose in blood during diabetes can lead to the non-enzymatic glycation of serum proteins such as human serum albumin (HSA). This study examined the changes that occur in binding of the sulfonylurea drug tolbutamide to HSA as the level of glycation for this protein was increased. High-performance affinity chromatography was used in this work along with columns containing various preparations of in vitro glycated HSA. It was found in frontal analysis experiments that the binding of tolbutamide with all of the tested preparations of glycated HSA could be described by a two-site model involving …

Spatiotemporal Analyses Of Soil Moisture From Point To Footprint Scale In Two Different Hydroclimatic Regions, Champa Joshi, Binayak P. Mohanty, Jennifer M. Jacobs, Amor V. M. Ines

Faculty Publications

This paper presents time stability analyses of soil moisture at different spatial measurement support scales (point scale and airborne remote sensing (RS) footprint scale 800 m × 800 m) in two different hydroclimatic regions. The data used in the analyses consist of in situ and passive microwave remotely sensed soil moisture data from the Southern Great Plains Hydrology Experiments 1997 and 1999 (SGP97 and SGP99) conducted in the Little Washita (LW) watershed, Oklahoma, and the Soil Moisture Experiments 2002 and 2005 (SMEX02 and SMEX05) in the Walnut Creek (WC) watershed, Iowa. Results show that in both the regions soil properties …

On The Need For Embodied And Dis-Embodied Cognition, Guy Dove Jan 2011

On The Need For Embodied And Dis-Embodied Cognition, Guy Dove

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This essay proposes and defends a pluralistic theory of conceptual embodiment. Our concepts are represented in at least two ways: (i) through sensorimotor simulations of our interactions with objects and events and (ii) through sensorimotor simulations of natural language processing. Linguistic representations are “dis-embodied” in the sense that they are dynamic and multimodal but, in contrast to other forms of embodied cognition, do not inherit semantic content from this embodiment. The capacity to store information in the associations and inferential relationships among linguistic representations extends our cognitive reach and provides an explanation of our ability to abstract and generalize. This …
