A Quantitative Cost Model Of Haccp Implementation, Zhen Wu Jan 2011

A Quantitative Cost Model Of Haccp Implementation, Zhen Wu

Food Safety

Foodbome illness is an important public health problem in the United States. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is widely acknowledged as an effective method to ensure product quality and control foodbome hazards. Existing literature considers the economic aspects of implementing a HACCP plan and identifies the major cost items for specific firms but stops short of providing a model to quantitatively analyze the cost of HACCP implementation over a variety of firms. This research used the case study method to refine the Prevention-Appraisal-Failure (PAF) model to identify potential costs associated with the implementation of HACCP plans and develop a …

Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Miocene-Age Glacial Deposits, Friis Hills, Antarctica, Alexander Ryan Smith Jan 2011

Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of Miocene-Age Glacial Deposits, Friis Hills, Antarctica, Alexander Ryan Smith

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

The Friis Hills is an isolated plateau standing as much as 600 m above surrounding topography in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region or Antarctica.Preserved on the plateau surface is a sequence of early to middle Miocene-aged dritis. At the eastern edge of the plateau, these drifts fill a shallow paleovalley to a depth of at least 35 m. The drills are exposed in a natural cross-section where modern topography crosscuts the paleovalley. Establishing an age and an environmental interpretation for these deposits is important because Antarctic paleoclimate records are lacking from the Mid-Miocene Climate Optimum. Two drifts fill the ancient …

Multi-Element Composition Of Triglochin Maritima L. From Contrasting Habitats Including Hot Springs And Metal Enriched Areas, Sharmila Sunwar Jan 2011

Multi-Element Composition Of Triglochin Maritima L. From Contrasting Habitats Including Hot Springs And Metal Enriched Areas, Sharmila Sunwar

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

The aim of this PhD research was to study multi-element composition in wetland plants from contrasting habitats, including hot springs, temporary wetlands, and metal-rich areas. Triglochin maritima L. (seaside arrowgrass) was chosen for the study because this species is common in alkaline/saline soils and is adapted to diverse habitats. Eleocharis rostellata, Juncus balticus, Salix exigua, S. boothii, and S. wolfii were also included in the study. Field studies and greenhouse experiments were conducted to study the multi-element composition in plants. In the greenhouse experiment the effects of temperature and soil biota on multielement uptake in T. maritima were studied. Root-zone …

Impact Of Ragl Aphid Resistant Soybeans On Binodoxys Communis (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Soybean Aphid Aphis Glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae ), Kiran Ghising Jan 2011

Impact Of Ragl Aphid Resistant Soybeans On Binodoxys Communis (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), A Parasitoid Of Soybean Aphid Aphis Glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae ), Kiran Ghising

Entomology

After its discovery in North America during the summer of 2000, the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) became a major pest of the soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., in most soybean growing regions of the United States. The use of insect-resistant plant varieties and natural enemies, important components of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), when applied solely have the potential to be effective measures for controlling soybean aphids. However, resistant host plants may influence natural enemies in beneficial or detrimental ways, thereby altering their effectiveness when the two strategies are combined. Therefore, we investigated how a resistant variety impacts …

Classical Rhetoric For Modem Problems: Accommodating Stasis For The W Ac/Wid Curriculum, Seth Andrew Archer Jan 2011

Classical Rhetoric For Modem Problems: Accommodating Stasis For The W Ac/Wid Curriculum, Seth Andrew Archer

English

This paper performs a case study of scientific information as it moves between media, in this case, from the journal Science to the New York Times. In order to monitor the rhetorical shifts between texts, both are analyzed using a modified four tier taxonomic system of stasis as outlined by Jeanne Fahnestock and Marie Secor (140-143, 1983). As the information from the different texts is analyzed under a singular lens, in this case 'the stases,' the rhetorical accommodations, both the subtle and the not subtle, become obvious in a manner since stasis is a "general scheme capable of accounting for …

Pregnancy, Illness, And Violence : The Power Discourses Of Motherhood In Mary Morrissy's Mother Of Pearl, Rebecca Renae Oster Jan 2011

Pregnancy, Illness, And Violence : The Power Discourses Of Motherhood In Mary Morrissy's Mother Of Pearl, Rebecca Renae Oster

English

This paper aims to explore the connection between the power structures of religion and medicine within Mary Morrissy's Mother of Pearl. Morrissy's text explores the ways in which women are oppressed by the Irish construct of perfect motherhood, which stems from the internalized social control exemplified in the religious and cultural expectations of women. Morrissy's text points out that a woman's national and individual identity is directly defined by her role as a mother and a religious figure. Morrissy's text critiques this construct and shows it to be unattainable as the power structures create a new form of oppression that …

The Human Animal : Posthumanism In John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Cece Rohwedder Jan 2011

The Human Animal : Posthumanism In John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Cece Rohwedder

English

In this paper, I examine John Steinbeck's Cannery Row on the basis of the posthuman vision that courses through it, as it does through many of Steinbeck's works. I propose that Steinbeck presents human and animal worlds that intermingle, mimic, and sustain one another; what Steinbeck described as non-teleological may justifiably be considered posthuman. In Cannery Row, people of various social positionings and mental capacities are presented plainly and matter-of-factly, without even a hint at causation or judgment of their character, abilities, behaviors, morals, or actions. The novel is grounded in a vision of close inter-species connections in which humans …

Uses And Gratifications Of Amputees' Online Social Networks, Dennis Owen Frohlich Jan 2011

Uses And Gratifications Of Amputees' Online Social Networks, Dennis Owen Frohlich

Computer Science

The following thesis examined amputee support groups on Facebook. Having an 111 amputation can be a life-changing experience. and social support may be necessary to understand one's amputation. Hundreds of amputee groups exist on Face book, and many of them foster active onlinc communities. This study sought to accomplish two goals: describe how amputees use these groups, and uncover the predictors that lead to engagement in socially supportive behaviors, particularly providing informational support and emotional support. While not all groups are active, this study found that amputees do connect with others through Facebook, sometimes quite frequently. Posting on group walls …

Multi-Agent Based Simulation Of An Unmanned Aerial Vehicles System, Karthiksivaram Murugesan Jan 2011

Multi-Agent Based Simulation Of An Unmanned Aerial Vehicles System, Karthiksivaram Murugesan

Computer Science

The rapid growth of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for civilian and military applications has promoted the development of research in many areas. Most of the unmanned aerial vehicles in use are manually controlled. Often, UAVs require highly trained pilot operators. Hence, the main challenge faced by researchers has been to make UAVs autonomous or semiautonomous. The goal of this research project is to develop and implement a simulation for a user-defined environment allowing UAVs to maneuver in free environments and obstacle-laden environments using Boid's algorithm of flocking with obstacle avoidance. The users are permitted to analyze the maneuvering area …

In recent years, various disciplines have generated large quantities of sequence data which has necessitated automated techniques for classifying these sequences into different categories of interest. Especially with the rapid rate at which biological sequence data has been emerging out of high throughput sequencing efforts, the need to interpret these large quantities of raw sequence data and gain deeper insights into them has become an essential part of modern biological research. Understanding the functions, localization and structure of newly identified protein sequences in particular has become a major challenge and is seeking the aid of computational techniques to keep up …

Discovering Complex Relationships Between Drugs And Diseases, Ranjana Sharma Jan 2011

Discovering Complex Relationships Between Drugs And Diseases, Ranjana Sharma

Computer Science

Finding the complex semantic relations between existing drugs and new diseases will help in the drug development in a new way. Most of the drugs which have found new uses have been discovered due to serendipity. Hence, the prediction of the uses of drugs for more than one disease should be done in a systematic way by studying the semantic relations between the drugs and diseases and also the other entities involved in the relations. Hence, in order to study the complex semantic relations between drugs and diseases an application was developed that integrates the heterogeneous data in different formats …

Vector-Item Pattern Mining Algorithms And Their Applications, Jianfei Wu Jan 2011

Vector-Item Pattern Mining Algorithms And Their Applications, Jianfei Wu

Computer Science

Advances in storage technology have long been driving the need for new data mining techniques. Not only are typical data sets becoming larger, but the diversity of available attributes is increasing in many problem domains. In biological applications for example, a single protein may have associated sequence-, text-, graph-, continuous and item data. Correspondingly, there is growing need for techniques to find patterns in such complex data. Many techniques exist for mapping specific types of data to vector space representations, such as the bag-of-words model for text [58] or embedding in vector spaces of graphs [94, 91]. However, there are …
