The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton
The Expanding Ecology Of A Hot Commodity: A Century Of Changes In The New Mexican Chile Pepper, William Carleton
History ETDs
Over the past century, the New Mexican chile pepper transformed from a principally local and regional crop grown by many, small scale growers into an industrial commodity on a global market. With this transformation, the ecology of the chile pepper has shifted and expanded. The actors in this ecology- the growers, the research scientists, the manufacturers of equipment, chemicals, and seeds, government legislatures, the consumers, and even the genome of the chile itself- became increasingly global with little or no ties to the local watersheds, ecosystems, and communities within the state. Driving this ecological expansion has been a close public-private …

Using Multicultural Literature In The Classroom To Encourage Tolerance And Respect, Laurel Hartmann
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to determine what happens when multicultural children's literature is used to supplement the kindergarten curriculum. Over the course of four weeks, students were read eight books about diverse cultures during centers and during circle time. Qualitative inquiry strategies such as parent questionnaires, audio recordings of small group and whole group discussions, student artifacts, and observations recorded in a teacher research journal were all used as a means of collecting data. Upon analyzing the data and searching for main ideas throughout the study, I found that multicultural picture books helped the children become more …

Structural Characterization Of Metal Binding In Metallo-Β-Lactamases Using X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert M. Breece
Structural Characterization Of Metal Binding In Metallo-Β-Lactamases Using X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Robert M. Breece
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
In an effort to probe the structure and mechanism of metallo-β-lactamases, the metal-binding behaviors of several enzymes were studied using EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure). Three members of the metallo-β-lactamase subclass B1, BcII from Bacillus cereus, Bla2 from Bacillus anthracis and CcrA from Bacillus fragilis, were compared to examine metal-binding behavior within a subclass. Each system exhibits different metal-binding behavior including cooperative binding (BcII), sequential binding (CcrA), and differential binding between zinc(II) and cobalt(II) forms (Bla2). The metal-binding behavior of subclass B3 of L1 from Stenotrophomonas maltophilia was explored with RFQ (rapid-freeze quenched) EXAFS and site selective metal …

Transient storage (TS) zones are important areas of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) processing in rivers. We assessed sensitivities regarding the relative impact that the main channel (MC), surface TS (STS), and hyporheic TS (HTS) have on network denitrification using a model applied to the Ipswich River in Massachusetts, United States. STS and HTS connectivity and size were parameterized using the results of in situ solute tracer studies in first‐ through fifth‐order reaches. DIN removal was simulated in all compartments for every river grid cell using reactivity derived from Lotic Intersite Nitrogen Experiment (LINX2) studies, hydraulic characteristics, and simulated discharge. Model …

Metaphors: Universal, Specific, And Public, Deli Nirmala
Metaphors: Universal, Specific, And Public, Deli Nirmala
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
Metaphors in written discourse, such as letters using bahasa Indonesia, can be derived from the metaphorical expressions used by writers to editors, showing conceptualization based on what they experience, feel, and think in their lives. This paper aims to find out the universality of the concepts shown by the metaphors and the users employing them. Using nonparticipant observation with a note-taking technique, the data are collected and selected purposively. Through distributional, referential, reflective introspective, and abductive inferential methods, the data are analyzed. The results indicate that metaphors can be grouped into universal, specific, and public types based on the universality …

Overcoming Glial-Derived Inhibition Of Regeneration In Cns Neurons: From Novel Compounds To Novel Uses For Fda-Approved Compounds, Andrea L. Johnstone
Open Access Dissertations
Trauma to the central nervous system (CNS) results in an irreversible disruption of axon tracts, often leading to lifelong functional deficits. Despite a large body of research into the mechanisms that underlie the lack of axonal regeneration after CNS injury, there are currently no effective treatments. One major obstacle involves the presence at injury sites of CNS growth-inhibitory molecules, such as myelin proteins and astrocyte-derived chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs), which act as environmental barriers to axonal regeneration. Our lab recently described the identification and characterization of a novel compound, F05, which promotes growth on inhibitory substrates in vitro. I show …

Serotonin 1a Receptor Signaling In The Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus Of The Peripubertal Rat, Maureen Lynn Petrunich Rutherford
Dissertations (6 month embargo)
Serotonin (5-HT) is a ubiquitous neurotransmitter in the brain that is involved in various physiologic functions including the regulation of hypothalamic hormones and has been implicated in various mood disorders such as depression. Preclinical and clinical data from studies in adults have shown that antidepressant drugs produce time-dependent changes in serotonergic and other systems and can also normalize dysfunction associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. To date, our understanding of the mechanisms of 5-HT receptor signaling and the actions of drugs on serotonergic function have been derived from extensive preclinical research carried out using cell lines in vitro or in …
Forced-Exercise Dependent Changes In Cellular Immunity: Effects On Experimental Autoimmune Neuritis, Michael W. Calik
Forced-Exercise Dependent Changes In Cellular Immunity: Effects On Experimental Autoimmune Neuritis, Michael W. Calik
Dissertations (6 month embargo)
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a debilitating inflammatory autoimmune disease of the peripheral nervous system that is characterized by rapid-onset paraparesis with areflexia progressing to neuromuscular paralysis. The most common form of GBS observed in North America and Europe is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP). Enhanced infiltration of pro-inflammatory type 1 helper T (Th1) cells into peripheral nerves of AIDP patients leads to demyelination.
Increasing evidence supports exercise as an effective rehabilitative intervention. Exercise attenuates the onset and progression of autoimmune diseases. Whether exercise alters the progression of GBS remains unclear.
In this study, we determined the effects of forced-exercise on …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Tanninsulfonic Acid Doped Polyaniline (Tanipani) - Metal Oxide Nanocomposites For Solar Cell Applications, Venu Gopal Bairi
Theses and Dissertations
Nanocomposites of polyaniline have gained much importance due to their improved electronic properties. The presence of metal oxides in the nanocomposites may enhance the photovoltaic effect and increase the efficiency of solar cells. We have synthesized tanninsulfonic acid doped polyaniline (TANI-PANI) composites in view of preparing metal oxide complexed composites due to the presence of o-catechol in tannin. Tanninsulfonic acid doped polyaniline (TANIPANI)-TiO2 or Al2O3 nanocomposites were synthesized by varying the amount of TiO2 from 10% to 70% (with respect to the mass of aniline) and by carrying out the synthesis at -10° C. Covalent bonding of the metal oxide …

We recorded via telemetry the arterial blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) response to classical conditioning following the spontaneous onset of autoimmune diabetes in BBDP/Wor rats vs. age-matched, diabetes-resistant control (BBDR/Wor) rats. Our purpose was to evaluate the autonomic regulatory responses to an acute stress in a diabetic state of up to 12 months duration. The stress was a 15-s pulsed tone (CS+) followed by a 0.5-s tail shock. The initial, transient increase in BP (i.e., the "first component," or C1), known to be derived from an orienting response and produced by a sympathetic increase in peripheral …

Bursting as well as tonic firing patterns have been described in various sensory systems. In the olfactory system, spontaneous bursts have been observed in neurons distributed across several synaptic levels, from the periphery, to the olfactory bulb (OB) and to the olfactory cortex. Several in vitro studies indicate that spontaneous firing patterns may be viewed as “fingerprints” of different types of neurons that exhibit distinct functions in the OB. It is still not known, however, if and how neuronal burstiness is correlated with the coding of natural olfactory stimuli. We thus conducted an in vivo study to probe this question …
