The Runt-related transcription factor, Runx2, is essential for osteogenesis and is controlled by both distal (P1) and proximal (P2) promoters. To understand Runx2 function requires determination of the spatiotemporal activity of P1 and P2 to Runx2 protein production. We generated a mouse model in which the P1-derived transcript was replaced with a lacZ reporter allele, resulting in loss of P1-derived protein while simultaneously allowing discrimination between the activities of the two promoters. Loss of P1-driven expression causes developmental defects with cleidocranial dysplasia-like syndromes that persist in the postnatal skeleton. P1 activity is robust in preosteogenic mesenchyme and at the onset …

Altered Toll-Like Receptor 2-Mediated Endotoxin Tolerance Is Related To Diminished Interferon Beta Production., Ss Zaric, Wa Coulter, Ce Shelburne, Cr Fulton, Ms Zaric, A Scott, Mj Lappin, Dc Fitzgerald, Cr Irwin, Cc Taggart
Peninsula Dental School
Induction of endotoxin tolerance leads to a reduced inflammatory response after repeated challenge by LPS and is important for resolution of inflammation and prevention of tissue damage. Enterobacterial LPS is recognized by the TLR4 signaling complex, whereas LPS of some non-enterobacterial organisms is capable of signaling independently of TLR4 utilizing TLR2-mediated signal transduction instead. In this study we report that Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS, a TLR2 agonist, fails to induce a fully endotoxin tolerant state in a human monocytic cell line (THP-1) and mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages. In contrast to significantly decreased production of human IL-8 and TNF-α and, in mice, …

All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer
All Too Human: "Animal Wisdom" In Nietzsche's Account Of The Good Life, Jonathan D. Singer
Between the Species
In this paper I argue that a certain understanding of “animality” – or that a certain problematization of the traditional human-animal hierarchy and divide – is central to Nietzsche’s account of the good life. Nietzsche’s philosophical project is primarily directed against those “metaphysical oppositions of values” that traditionally structure how we think, feel and live, and in this paper I submit that, for Nietzsche, the classical opposition between the human and the animal is the most basic and the most pernicious, for it undergirds the oppositional hierarchy between rationality and irrationality that has turned human life against itself. I draw …

Direct Anthelmintic Effects Of Cereus Jamacaru (Cactaceae) On Trichostrongylid Nematodes Of Sheep: In Vivo Studies, A. F. Vatta, C. Kandu-Lelo, I. O. Ademola, J. N. Eloff
Faculty Publications
Following claims of anthelmintic activity of Cereus jamacaru DC (Cactaceae) by a commercial farmer, in vivo studies were conducted to determine the possible direct anthelmintic effects of the plant on ovine gastrointestinal nematodes. Eighteen sheep were infected with 4000 Haemonchus contortus and 6000 Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae given in three divided doses over a period of three days. Once the infections were patent, the sheep were allocated to three groups and were drenched once a week for six weeks with fresh blended C. jamacaru plant material at a single (32.3. g/sheep) or double dose (64.6. g/sheep) or they remained as undrenched …
Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu
Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu
Theses and Dissertations
Noncompliance is the main reason for treatment failure. Approximately 50 to 75% of patients misuse their medication due to forgetfulness and busy schedule. Instead of heavily depending on patient's memory for following medication deadlines, we propose a new automated medication helper called "Mobile Treatment Monitoring System" to help patients take their medication on time. Among other technologies that help patients to follow up their medication such as Pill Organizers, Medication Reminders, and Pill Dispensers, using remote treatment monitoring system appears to be a promising technology because system creates a direct link between doctor and patient so doctor will be notified …

A Model Approach To The Electrochemical Cell: An Inquiry Activity, Deanna Cullen, Thomas Pentecost
Peer Reviewed Articles
In an attempt to address some student misconceptions in electrochemistry, this guided-inquiry laboratory was devised to give students an opportunity to use a manipulative that simulates the particulatelevel activity within an electrochemical cell, in addition to using an actual electrochemical cell. Students are led through a review of expected prior knowledge relating to oxidation and reduction half-reactions. Then, the students examine the macroscopic level by constructing and using an electrochemical cell. Finally, students use the manipulative and make connections between the two levels through class discussion. The misconceptions involve the movement of electrons and ions through solution and the salt …

Hemiscorpius Novaki Sp. N. From Somaliland (Scorpiones: Hemiscorpiidae), František Kovařík, Tomáš Mazuch
Euscorpius
Hemiscorpius novaki sp. n. from Somaliland is described and compared with other African species of the genus. The new species is characterized chiefly by the total length of 40–46 mm; yellow to yellowish-brown color with pedipalp fingers reddish brown to black, darker than the chela; slightly longer metasoma in the male than in the female. These characters distinguish H. novaki sp. n. from H. somalicus Lourenço, 2011. The third African species of the genus, H. tellinii Borelli, 1904, is known only from the female holotype, which differs from females of H. novaki sp. n. in having much less pronounced granulation …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Background
Epidemiological evidence suggests that moderately elevated levels of circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) are associated with increased risk of breast cancer in women. How circulating IGF-I may promote breast cancer incidence is unknown, however, increased IGF-I signaling is linked to trastuzumab resistance in ErbB2 positive breast cancer. Few models have directly examined the effect of moderately high levels of circulating IGF-I on breast cancer initiation and progression. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of circulating IGF-I to independently initiate mammary tumorigenesis and/or accelerate the progression of ErbB2 mediated mammary tumor growth.

Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst
Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst
Theses and Dissertations
The sophistication of the devices through which a man shapes his world are the tool-marks of his development upon history. One device currently shaping the lives of man is the High Performance Computer (HPC) system. HPC systems have been described as ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010).'' The reason for HPC systems to be declared ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010)'' comes from the fact that it is cheaper for a manufacturer to conduct thousands of tests in virtual space, than it is to try multiple experimental designs in the physical world. Through capabilities of HPC …
