An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz Jan 2011

An Animal Model Of Performance Enhancing Drugs And Catastrophic Interference, Akiva Rabinowitz

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The neural networks that underlie memory and learning are some of the most complex systems that scientists seek to describe. Recent research has demonstrated that drugs which increase synaptic plasticity possess the capacity to enhance memory. The question that the present study sought to address was whether it is possible that cognition-enhancing drugs might enhance some memories to the detriment of others. Mice of the C57BL/6J inbred strain were trained on the Morris water maze task. They were then transferred over to a second, similar, water maze and trained using either the cognition-enhancing drug apamin or saline injected intraperitoneally. A …

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem Jan 2011

Analysis Of Mutant Manganese-Superoxide Dismutase On The Lifespan Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae"", Sarah Salem

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Previously isolated mutants of the superoxide dismutase 2 gene (SOD2), selected for increased activity in E. coli, were transformed into yeast cells in order to observe their effects on aging. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to confirm that the yeast incorporated the mutant form of the gene. The strains with mutant forms of the SOD2 gene were observed to have decreased growth rates compared to the unmutated strain. Lifespan analyses were then conducted in order to see if yeast with mutant versions of SOD2 had lifespans that differed significantly from those with the unmutated forms of the …

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod Jan 2011

Lysander Spooner, Lifestyle Anarchism, And Jury Nullification, Ed Skrod

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Individual anarchism, a social movement of the early nineteenth century, was founded on the principles of self-sovereignty and individualism. One such anarchist, Lysander Spooner, argues in “Vices are not Crimes” that vices should not be criminalized by the State. To do so, “deprive*s+ every man of his… liberty to pursue his own happiness.”1 I argue that Spooner’s essay lays the foundation for “lifestyle anarchism,” the doctrine that all the affairs of human beings within the domain of their lifestyle choices (provided they do not harm the person or property of another), should be managed by individuals or voluntary associations. One …

Fresh Waters And Fish Diversity: Distribution, Protection And Disturbance In Tropical Australia., Stephanie R. Januchowski-Hartley, Richard G. Pearson, Robert Puschendorf, Thomas Rayner Jan 2011

Fresh Waters And Fish Diversity: Distribution, Protection And Disturbance In Tropical Australia., Stephanie R. Januchowski-Hartley, Richard G. Pearson, Robert Puschendorf, Thomas Rayner

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Given the globally poor protection of fresh waters for their intrinsic ecological values, assessments are needed to determine how well fresh waters and supported fish species are incidentally protected within existing terrestrial protected-area networks, and to identify their vulnerability to human-induced disturbances. To date, gaps in data have severely constrained any attempt to explore the representation of fresh waters in tropical regions. METHODOLOGY AND RESULTS: We determined the distribution of fresh waters and fish diversity in the Wet Tropics of Queensland, Australia. We then used distribution data of fresh waters, fish species, human-induced disturbances, and the terrestrial protected-area network …

Can Oxygen Set Thermal Limits In An Insect And Drive Gigantism?, Wilco C.E.P. Verberk, David T. Bilton Jan 2011

Can Oxygen Set Thermal Limits In An Insect And Drive Gigantism?, Wilco C.E.P. Verberk, David T. Bilton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Thermal limits may arise through a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand in a range of animal taxa. Whilst this oxygen limitation hypothesis is supported by data from a range of marine fish and invertebrates, its generality remains contentious. In particular, it is unclear whether oxygen limitation determines thermal extremes in tracheated arthropods, where oxygen limitation may be unlikely due to the efficiency and plasticity of tracheal systems in supplying oxygen directly to metabolically active tissues. Although terrestrial taxa with open tracheal systems may not be prone to oxygen limitation, species may be affected during other life-history stages, particularly …

Capture Technique And Fish Personality: Angling Targets Timid Bluegill Sunfish,Lepomis Macrochirus, Alexander D.M. Wilson, Thomas R. Binder, Keegan P. Mcgrath, Steven J. Cooke, Jean Guy J. Godin Jan 2011

Size-selective harvesting associated with commercial and recreational fishing practices has been shown to alter life history traits through a phenomenon known as fishing-induced evolution. This phenomenon may be a result of selection pathways targeting life-history traits directly or indirectly through correlations with behavioral traits. Here, we report on the relationship between individual differences in behavior and capture technique (beach seining versus angling) in wild-caught juvenile bluegill sunfish ( Lepomis macrochirus ). Both fish caught by using a seine net (seined) and fish caught by using a lure (angled) were individually tested under standardized laboratory conditions for their boldness, water-column use, …

White Body: Animating Feminine Pleasure, K Parker Jan 2011

White Body: Animating Feminine Pleasure, K Parker

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Following Luce Irigaray’s perspective that “femininity’ ... may be recovered only in secret, in hiding’ (1985a: 30), my paper investigates the relationship between the moving image screen, feminine pleasure and the body, through critical reflection as an artist film-maker on the plasticine animation White Body (2009): in this practice-as-research film, I manipulate plasticine, sugar and dust with my fingers under the animation rostrum camera to explore my early childhood memories of secret, transgressive play; seeking to liberate a cascading feminine sensibility through the creative process of working ‘intuitively’ frame-by-frame with materiality and digital technologies.

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown Jan 2011

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The aim of this pedagogic research project is to aid student’s reflective practice in an environment that is not suited to written critical reflection. To this end we have used technology to capture the students working practice in order for them to re-visit the work at a later date, enhancing their ability to develop their practice as well as critically evaluating the work of others. The projects main aims can be broken down in to:Innovatively use and assess pedagogic value of “Brushes” app and new iPad technology in an arts context. Aid student learning, understanding and reflection of methods and …
