Los Tres Grandes - Herman Gallegos, Ernesto Galarza, Julian Samora: Rooted In Community, Guided By Friendship, Cultivating Leadership., Carmen R. Samora

American Studies ETDs

Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. At a time when foundations earmarked minority support primarily for African Americans, Los …

Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther Aug 2011

Contextually-Controlled Semantic False Memories In The Form Of Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training, Paul Guinther

Psychology ETDs

Modified versions of the original Derived Relational Intrusions Following Training paradigm (DRIFT; Guinther & Dougher, 2010) were used to engineer semantic false memories and contextually-controlled semantic false memories in group data. Experiment I replicated and extended the original DRIFT paradigm by showing that interrelated conditional discrimination training (match-to-sample; MTS) could influence subsequent false recall even in the absence of tests of symmetry and transitivity. It was also found that false recall was especially likely among those participants whose self reports indicated awareness that the study list words shared a common conditionally discriminative function. Experiment II required participants to complete a …

Equine Embrace : Touch And The Therapeutic Encounter In Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy From The Perspective Of The Clinician, Ann Marie Sexauer Aug 2011

Equine Embrace : Touch And The Therapeutic Encounter In Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy From The Perspective Of The Clinician, Ann Marie Sexauer

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to examine touch between human and equine in the therapeutic context from the perspective of the clinician conducting an equine facilitated psychotherapy session. Thirteen practitioners, twelve from the mental health field and one life coach, participated in a single semi-structured in-depth interview. The practitioners were questioned on their views of touch between themselves and their clients, and between horse and client. They were also asked if their touch practices changed with the presence of an animal, as well as what outcome they saw due to clients touching the horse, and in which situations. The findings showed …

Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah Aug 2011

Use Of Fluorescent Micropsheres To Measure Coronary Flow Reserve In Rat Animal Model, Riddhi Harsh Shah

Theses

Heart attacks result from reduced or blocked blood flow through major coronary arteries, resulting in permanent damage to heart muscle. Coronary blood flow (CBF) is thus important to measure in experimental animal models of heart disease. A standard method to measure CBF uses tracer microspheres (Ø = 15 µm) injected into the left ventricle that flow through coronary arteries but cannot pass through capillaries and so become trapped in heart muscle. Previously, radioactive or colored microspheres have quantified the number of tracers trapped in the muscle. Fluorescent microspheres offer a more recent and more sensitive measurement mode. However, fluorescent microspheres …

Trauma In Adults With Developmental Disabilities : An Analysis Of Trauma Theory And Behavior Modification, Lauren Rae Rosenblum Aug 2011

Trauma In Adults With Developmental Disabilities : An Analysis Of Trauma Theory And Behavior Modification, Lauren Rae Rosenblum

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explored the phenomenon of trauma in adults with developmental disabilities. The study examined adults with developmental disabilities' vulnerabilities to abusive conditions and systemic oppression, increasing the populations' risk of traumatization. The study analyzed trauma theory and behavior modification, comparing the prevalence and treatment implications of each theory on adults with persons with developmental disabilities. Furthermore, findings indicated that there were limitations in research and access to trauma-based therapy, while behavior modification was predominantly used as a treatment remedy. This report concludes with recommendations for the social worker and mental health fields.

Cognitively Informed Therapeutic Relationships Between Dogs And Humans : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Dawn Marie Colinan Aug 2011

Cognitively Informed Therapeutic Relationships Between Dogs And Humans : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Dawn Marie Colinan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Humans and dogs have been interacting and building relationship for what is thought to be tens of thousands of years. Within the last few generations, attention has been paid to the potential therapeutic effects of this relationship. Beneficial effects have been observed for many years. Recently, criticisms in methodology from primarily qualitative and anecdotal data have suggested that evidence is weak. Ethology, the study of animal behavior, is accustomed to experimental procedures. Typically studying wild species, ethology presents a fortunate opportunity to apply its rigorous scientific methodology to the therapeutic literature being critiqued. Ethology has evolutionary theory as its foundational …

Using Marriage To Protect White Supremacy And Heterosexual Privilege : A Historical Analysis Of Marriage Law In The United States, Katharine Franks Kyros Aug 2011

Using Marriage To Protect White Supremacy And Heterosexual Privilege : A Historical Analysis Of Marriage Law In The United States, Katharine Franks Kyros

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study tracks the ways that the regulation of marriage in the United States has been used to oppress populations and protect privilege, specifically focusing on racial and heterosexual privilege. Looking at the intersection of oppression with marriage law in the United States, the more specific concepts of othering, marginalization, and institutional discrimination are addressed. The United States had laws prohibiting interracial marriage in place from 1630 until these laws were declared unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in 1967. Miscegenation laws were used to target and punish individuals engaging in relationships that threatened the social order. The exclusion of …

Encompassing Acholi Values : Culturally Ethical Reintegration Ideology For Formerly Abducted Youth Of The Lord's Resistance Army In Northern Uganda, Neil James Bilotta Aug 2011

Encompassing Acholi Values : Culturally Ethical Reintegration Ideology For Formerly Abducted Youth Of The Lord's Resistance Army In Northern Uganda, Neil James Bilotta

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The focus of this study was to explore the historical underpinnings of culturally specific "healing" strategies associated with returning formerly abducted children in northern Uganda, post captivity in the Lord's Resistance Army rebel group. Although studies exist that examined both individualistic and collective approaches to aid in the reintegration process for youth who escape the war, there is minimal literature focusing on the cultural implications of Western therapeutic interventions for former child combatants in northern Uganda. Are Western mental health practitioners culturally aware of the distinctions between the Western world and that of Acholi youth? Are traditional Acholi values maintained …

Social And Environmental Protection In Bilateral Investment Treaties: Foreign Investors’ Perspective, M. Aji Satria Suleiman Aug 2011

Social And Environmental Protection In Bilateral Investment Treaties: Foreign Investors’ Perspective, M. Aji Satria Suleiman

Indonesia Law Review

The limit of host states’ right to regulate foreign investment within their jurisdiction has been the main, yet unresolved issues in international investment law. This makes it more difficult, given the global structure of investment law that consists of networks of Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs). This article will not deal with the question of optimal structure of regulatory discretion under BITs which is still debatable among scholars. The central agenda of this article is to address the precondition for an efficient outcome to materialize within the complex web of BITs already signed among states. It is even more complex to …

There Is (Not) A Black President : A Psychodynamic Exploration Of Doubts About Obama's Citizenship In A Post-Racial America, Luke David Mechem

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Using the psychodynamic concepts of projection and paranoia, this paper examines the phenomenon of challenges to Barack Obama's American citizenship. Through analysis of various acts of media and political discourse, the birthers' claim that Obama is not a citizen—and can thus not be president—is situated within the larger context of the current ideological position of 'colorblind' racism and of America as 'post-racial.' Further links are made with sociopolitical conspiracy theory as well as with historical Nativist and populist movements. Through this exploration, the paper suggests that the significance of Obama's presidency and the intensity of the anxiety that it has …

The Deg/Enac Protein Mec-10 Regulates The Transduction Channel Complex In Caenorhabditis Elegans Touch Receptor Neurons, Jóhanna Árnadóttir, Robert O'Hagan, Yushu Chen, Miriam B. Goodman, Martin Chalfie Aug 2011

The Deg/Enac Protein Mec-10 Regulates The Transduction Channel Complex In Caenorhabditis Elegans Touch Receptor Neurons, Jóhanna Árnadóttir, Robert O'Hagan, Yushu Chen, Miriam B. Goodman, Martin Chalfie

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Gentle touch sensation in Caenorhabditis elegans is mediated by the MEC-4/MEC-10 channel complex, which is expressed exclusively in six touch receptor neurons (TRNs). The complex contains two pore-forming subunits, MEC-4 and MEC-10, as well as the accessory subunits MEC-2, MEC-6, and UNC-24. MEC-4 is essential for channel function, but beyond its role as a pore-forming subunit, the functional contribution of MEC-10 to the channel complex and to touch sensation is unclear.Weaddressed this question using behavioral assays, in vivo electrophysiological recordings from TRNs, and heterologous expression of mutant MEC-10 isoforms. Animals with a deletion in mec-10 showed only a partial loss …

Probing Ultra-Subwavelength Inhomogeneities Embedded Within Dielectric Targets Using Photonic Nanojets, Cesar Méndez Ruiz

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The use of optics to detect ultra-subwavelength features embedded within structures is a hot topic for a broad diversity of applications like spectroscopy, nanotechnology, microscopy, and optical data storage discs. Conventional objective lens based optical systems have a fundamental limit on the best possible resolution of about 200 \u03b7m due to the diffraction of light as it propagates into the far-field. There already exist several near-field techniques with the capability to overcome this limitation, but each of these systems has certain drawbacks related to the complexity of the system or to limitations imposed by the system. A photonic nanojet is …

Go Out Of Yourselves!, Rev W M Statham

ATS Digital Resources

"Living in yourself alone is as miserable thing as living to yourself alone. We all need something higher than ourselves to lean upon, to trust in, to love; and this is very beautifully expressed by the Psalmist when he says, "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I." "

Man's Gift To God, Rev Adolphe Monod

ATS Digital Resources

"Every system of philosophy has attempted its own definition of human nature; but has man, therefore, been more thoroughly understood? The Bible, the most practical and the least systematic of books, pursues and inverse order: instead of defining man without revealing him, it reveals him without defining him."

Characterizing The Local Food Environment In Albuquerque, New Mexico: A Dual Perspective Of Retailer And Consumer, Kathryn Lenzer

Geography ETDs

This research used local produce as a way to investigate the construction and meaning of the local food environment by food retailers and consumers in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The research consisted of three components. First, the observed local food environment was defined through store surveys that were conducted in 193 food retail outlets and farmers markets in the Albuquerque study area. These surveys were performed in order to collect information, through signage and other advertising materials, about how retailers defined 'local' produce. The subsequent qualitative text analysis on these materials allowed for several themes to emerge that characterized the observed …
