Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker
Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker
Journal Articles
Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for healthy and functional movement. This variability has a particular organization and is characterized by a …

Battling Clearance Culture Shock: Comparing U.S. Fair Use And Canadian Fair Dealing In Advancing Freedom Of Expression In Non-Fiction Film, Sarah Sklar-Heyn
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note explores the tension between intellectual property rights and freedom of expression, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by nonfiction filmmakers in navigating copyright laws. It highlights how fair use and fair dealing doctrines in the U.S. and Canada serve as critical tools for balancing these competing interests. The analysis emphasizes the importance of flexible legal frameworks to accommodate the unique needs of documentary filmmaking, which often relies heavily on the use of preexisting works. The note also examines the potential for international harmonization of these doctrines to facilitate global distribution of audiovisual works.
The Manual Scavenging Problem: A Case For The Supreme Court Of India, Samuel D. Permutt
The Manual Scavenging Problem: A Case For The Supreme Court Of India, Samuel D. Permutt
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note addresses the persistent issue of manual scavenging in India, a practice where predominantly Dalit women and girls clean human waste under deplorable conditions. Despite legal prohibitions, the practice continues due to caste-based discrimination and inadequate sanitation infrastructure. The author argues that the Supreme Court of India, through Public Interest Litigation (PIL), can effectively tackle this issue by implementing a three-step solution to eradicate manual scavenging.

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
The advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are associated with increased cardiac endothelial injury. However, no causative link has been established between increased AGEs and enhanced endothelial injury after ischemia/reperfusion. More importantly, the molecular mechanisms by which AGEs may increase endothelial injury remain unknown. Adult rat cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) were isolated and incubated with AGE-modified bovine serum albumin (BSA) or BSA. After AGE-BSA or BSA preculture, CMECs were subjected to simulated ischemia (SI)/reperfusion (R). AGE-BSA increased SI/R injury as evidenced by enhanced lactate dehydrogenase release and caspase-3 activity. Moreover, AGE-BSA significantly increased SI/R-induced oxidative/nitrative stress in CMECs (as measured …

Using Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Glycoprotein To Pseudotype Bacmam Viruses For Enhancement Of Transduction Efficiency, Lydia Sanchez
Using Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Glycoprotein To Pseudotype Bacmam Viruses For Enhancement Of Transduction Efficiency, Lydia Sanchez
PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship
Baculovirus has been a common tool for protein production since the mid 1980s. The virus has an exclusive tropism only capable of infecting the larval stages of insects. Originally, baculovirus recombinant gene expression used Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) insect cells as the host cells for protein production. However, in 1995, it was discovered that baculoviruses could be modified to transduce mammalian cells with the insertion of a mammalian promoter and gene of interest. Due to its ease of generation and low biology safety hazards, this technology, known as BacMam (Baculovirus Mammalian) is popular in the research field for protein production and …
Developing An Employee Training Addendum For A Sustainable Hospitality Operation, Devonne A. Williams
Developing An Employee Training Addendum For A Sustainable Hospitality Operation, Devonne A. Williams
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
As sustainability has become an important part of everyday life for American consumers, it is important that the hospitality industry do whatever it takes to meet their needs. Consumers expect businesses that they patronize to have policies in place for waste reduction, air and water conservation, and improved air quality and environment. Without the support of the front line employees, however, a hospitality operation has no chance to obtain sustainable success in these arenas. By creating addendums to previously existing employee handbooks, businesses are able to provide their employees with new policies and expectations of sustainable behaviors. This professional paper …

Chinese Culture And Casino Customer Service, Qing Han
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the tightened competitive conditions in the gaming industry, it is essential for casino management to focus on customer service. Chinese customers are very important for the Las Vegas gaming market. Even though the games offered by the casinos are the core value that Chinese customers seek when visiting a casino, a warm, comfortable and intimate service will enhance their gaming experience as well. Understanding important Chinese culture factors such as superstitions, gaming characteristics and communication styles can help casino employees enhance the quality of the service they are able to offer to Chinese customers, thereby increasing satisfaction and retention.
The Mindstorm, Jeffrey P. Harrison
The Mindstorm, Jeffrey P. Harrison
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
The Mindstorm is the story of Marcus Hamilton, a gay, African-American, teenager who is born with incredible telekinetic powers. He has the ability to levitate considerably large objects with his mind, create telekinetic force fields, and fly. After preventing a convenience store hold-up, he decides to become a superhero and takes the name Mindstorm.
There are two story arcs: 1) Marcus’ everyday life and high school problems, including racism, homophobia, and his first same-sex relationship; and, 2) Marcus, as Mindstorm, developing his powers and confronting Nathan Vaughn, a corrupt industrialist/weapons developer, terrorist, and main antagonist.

A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack
A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack
Law Student Publications
This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to long-reaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia’s tribes an equal place …
Punishment V. Restoration: A Comparative Analysis Of Juvenile Delinquency Law In The United States And Mexico, Beth Caldwell
Punishment V. Restoration: A Comparative Analysis Of Juvenile Delinquency Law In The United States And Mexico, Beth Caldwell
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article critiques the punitive approach to juvenile justice in the United States, particularly in California, by contrasting it with Mexico's restorative model, as seen in Oaxaca. It argues that the U.S. system violates international human rights standards, fails to address adolescent development, and prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation, while Oaxaca's approach aligns with the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child and incorporates restorative justice principles. The analysis calls for U.S. juvenile justice reform, urging policymakers to consider Oaxaca's model and align policies with adolescent brain development research and human rights frameworks.

Disgust Sensitivity And The Neurophysiology Of Left-Right Political Orientations, Kevin B. Smith, Douglas R. Oxley, Matthew V. Hibbing, John R. Alford, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Disgust has been described as the most primitive and central of emotions. Thus, it is not surprising that it shapes behaviors in a variety of organisms and in a variety of contexts—including homo sapien politics. People who believe they would be bothered by a range of hypothetical disgusting situations display an increased likelihood of displaying right-of-center rather than left-of-center political orientations. Given its primal nature and essential value in avoiding pathogens disgust likely has an effect even without registering in conscious beliefs. In this article, we demonstrate that individuals with marked involuntary physiological responses to disgusting images, such as of …
