Microplastics Contamination In Marine Environment: Sources And Management Strategies, Aishah Hamdi, Mohammad Oves, Naser Alkenani, Majed Alshaeri
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Marine Science
Microplastics (MPs) have been identified as emerging global pollutants because of their persistence, mobility, and significant ecological impacts. These particles, which result from the degradation of plastic waste and from various industrial and consumer activities, are now widespread in marine environments. The capacity of MPs to adsorb contaminants and bioaccumulate within food webs increases their ecological and health risks, prompting substantial concern regarding their long-term consequences for marine ecosystems and human health. This review synthesizes current knowledge regarding the composition, sources, transport, mechanisms, and environmental behavior of microplastics (MPs), with particular emphasis on marine systems. In these environments, the persistence …

Every year, over 700,000 people, particularly children under five, die from vector-borne diseases worldwide. Effectively controlling endemics and preventing new outbreaks requires an integrated approach that can lead to the elimination of both vectors and diseases. In the last two decades, integrating medical interventions and vector control has significantly reduced the incidence of Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT), with the World Health Organization validating eight countries as having eliminated the disease as a public health problem. However, elimination of the tsetse vector has not been confirmed, leaving the possibility of re-emergence. We developed a six-step modeling framework to assess vector …

Nonparametric Control Charts Estimation Using Hybrid Cyber-Intelligence Algorithms For Stock Market Monitoring, Mariam Jumaah Mousa, Munaf Yousif Hmood
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
This paper introduces a novel nonparametric hybrid cyber-intelligence-based statistical process control and anomaly detection framework in time series data. It is developed to overcome the shortcomings of the classical control schemes in dealing with complex, abnormal, and noisy input data, especially when it is autocorrelated. The proposed methodology combines three technical pillars: First, it utilizes a bidirectional long-short-term memory architecture (Bi-LSTM) to capture long-term time dependency and learn nonlinear patterns, leaving only true deviations as residuals that remove trends and noises from the market. Second, it adopts the Golden Eagle Optimizer (GEO) algorithm for optimal parameter selection. This intelligent algorithm …

Photoaging caused by chronic sun exposure exhibits characteristics similar to intrinsic aging, including skin thinning, moisture loss, roughness, collagen degradation, and wrinkle formation. This process is driven by oxidative stress and the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA) as a result of lipid peroxidation. Topical intervention using antioxidant-based moisturizers could prevent further damage. Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora), high levels of chlorogenic acid and caffeine, is known for its antioxidant properties. When fermented with a Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY) to produce kombucha coffee, its bioactive compounds are enhanced, potentially offering additional protection against oxidative stress and photoaging. This …

Cryopreservation of goat semen is an essential tool for genetic improvement, germplasm conservation, and the expansion of artificial insemination programs in caprine breeding. However, buck spermatozoa are highly susceptible to cryo-induced oxidative stress due to their membrane composition rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Excessive generation of reactive oxygen species during semen processing, freezing, and thawing compromises sperm motility, viability, membrane integrity, mitochondrial function, and DNA stability, ultimately reducing post-thaw fertilizing potential. Semen extenders play a pivotal role in mitigating these detrimental effects by providing cryoprotection and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Among commercial extenders, Triladyl® is widely used in ruminant semen preservation; …

Journal of Bioresource Management
Polythene bags are highly inert plastic materials made from monomers of ethylene. Due to their durability, lightweight, and low-weight characteristics, polythene bags are in high demand among consumers and retailers worldwide. This widespread use of polythene bags has led to the generation of polythene waste in the environment. This study focused on the degradation of polythene bags through fungal strains in the desired region. In this research, three identified fungal strains, namely Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Fusarium oxysporum, were screened using two synthetic media for degradation, such as the culture plate method (CPM) and Liquid media degradation (LMD). A …

Clinical Epidemiology Of Stroke In The Productive Age Population In Indonesia: A Scoping Review, Satria Akbar Putra Asmara, Ulil Albab Habibah
Jurnal Epidemiologi Kesehatan Indonesia
Data from the 2018 Indonesian Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) demonstrates a marked increase in stroke prevalence, rising from 7% in 2013 to 10% in 2018. This upward trend is accompanied by a notable epidemiological shift, with stroke no longer predominantly affecting older adults ≥65 years, but increasingly occurring among the productive-age population (15–64 years). This scoping review was conducted in February 2026 in accordance with the JBI methodological guidelines and PRISMA-ScR. Searches were conducted in Google Scholar, PubMed, Garuda, and ScienceDirect. Inclusion criteria include articles published within the last 10 years (2016–2026), articles discussing the characteristics of stroke patients in …

BackgroundThe project ‘World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Tumours (WCT): a Living Evidence Gap Map by Tumour Type’ applies the Evidence and Gap Map (EGM) methodology to systematically synthesise evidence to support iterative refinements of the WCT. As part of this work, we created the first EGM for the WCT of Urinary and Male Genital Tumors, covering clear cell renal cell carcinoma, non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma, glandular neoplasms of the prostate and urothelial tumours.MethodsSystematic searches in PubMed and Ovid Embase were conducted and harmonised to a 2020 to 2024 publication time period. Following title and abstract screening, reviewers coded …

From Tragedy To Liberation: The Tragic Mulatta And Abolition Democracy At The Intersection Of Race And Gender In The Quadroons And The Octoroon, Maram Mohammed Mahmoud Samman
University of Tabuk Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences
This essay explores the figure of the tragic mulatta in Lydia Maria Child’s The Quadroons and Dion Boucicault’s The Octoroon, analyzing how mixed-race female characters critique the racial and gender hierarchies of 19th-century America. Using an intersectional lens, it examines how race, gender, and class shape the identities and tragic fates of Xarifa and Zoe—women who were socially excluded from both Black and White communities. Drawing on W.E.B. Du Bois’s concept of double consciousness and the framework of Abolition Democracy, the essay argues that the tragic mulatta is not merely a narrative trope but a site of political tension and …

A 10-year-old castrated male Korean Shorthair cat was presented with a 5-day history of lethargy and nonambulatory paraparesis. Neurological examination revealed delayed postural reactions in both pelvic limbs. Initial radiography of the lumbar spine revealed narrowing of the L7–S1 intervertebral disc space with ventral bony proliferation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed collapse of the L7–S1 intervertebral disc space with heterogeneous T2-weighted hyperintensity and ventral contrast enhancement of the affected disc, as well as contrast enhancement of the adjacent paraspinal musculature. These findings suggested the presence of discospondylitis. Coccoid bacteria detected in both urine and splenic fine-needle aspirate indicated hematogenous spread. The …
