Long Term Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Administered During Different Developmental Stages In Mice, Henry Boeh Oct 2011

Long Term Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Administered During Different Developmental Stages In Mice, Henry Boeh

Dissertations (1934 -)

A number of studies have suggested that the occurrence of past trauma can increase an individual's chance of developing PTSD from a new traumatic experience later in life. Trauma that occurs during childhood appears to have a particularly strong effect on this risk increase. Furthermore, conditioned fear responses have been shown to incubate over extended periods of time in animal models. To further investigate the role these phenomena play in the development of PTSD, this study exposed juvenile and adult mice to 7 days of chronic variable stress (CVS). One month later, a Pavlovian delay fear conditioning procedure was used …

Application Of Engineered Porosity And Modified Effective Moduli To The Design Of Orthopaedic Implants, John Anthony Choren Oct 2011

Application Of Engineered Porosity And Modified Effective Moduli To The Design Of Orthopaedic Implants, John Anthony Choren

Dissertations (1934 -)

Commercially available orthopaedic implants have a bending stiffness (flexural rigidity) that is at least 10 times greater than cortical bone. Effects of this stiffness mismatch have been extensively studied relative to total hip arthroplasty (THA). Clinical experience with THA has shown that stiffness mismatch is the primary cause of accelerated bone resorption due to the stress shielding, resulting in sub-optimal bone loading, aseptic loosening and inadequate bone support for a future revision implant.

Attempts to incorporate design features that reduce the flexural rigidity of implants have yielded inconsistent results or failures due to biomaterial incompatibilities and practical manufacturing complications. The …

Investigation Of Spatio-Temporal Effects Of Fmri Visual Field Mapping Techniques On V1, John J. Janik Oct 2011

Investigation Of Spatio-Temporal Effects Of Fmri Visual Field Mapping Techniques On V1, John J. Janik

Dissertations (1934 -)

Blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging has been used extensively for mapping the representation of the visual field within the human brain. Visual field mapping using fMRI has been used clinically to assess patients with cortical pathology and to plan surgical treatment impacting the visual system. The accuracy of fMRI-based visual field mapping methods needs to be better understood for clinical use. This accuracy can be important for presurgical mapping of brain function near a tumor resection site since inaccurate rendition of the underlying neural function could lead to inappropriate resection of viable brain tissue. The most widely …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan Oct 2011

Quantitative Evaluation Of Redox Processes In Intact Rat Lungs And Endothelial Cells And The Effect Of Hyperoxia, Zhuohui Gan

Dissertations (1934 -)

A common initial treatment of hypoxemia in patients with lung failure secondary to acute lung injury (e.g., adult respiratory distress syndrome) is oxygen (O2) therapy (hyperoxia). However, prolonged O2 therapy causes lung O2 toxicity, which can further impair lung functions. The rat model of lung O2 toxicity replicates key features of human lung O2 toxicity. In addition, rats develop tolerance or susceptibility to 100% O2 by pre-exposing them to 85% O2 (hyper-85) or 60% O2 (hyper-60) for 7 days, respectively. Therefore, the long-term objectives of this study are to elucidate mechanisms …

Muscle Fatigue And Motor Output Variability With Acute Stress In Healthy Young Adults And Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Manda Linea Keller Oct 2011

Muscle Fatigue And Motor Output Variability With Acute Stress In Healthy Young Adults And Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Manda Linea Keller

Dissertations (1934 -)

Acute stress can alter motor performance differently for men and women. The first aim of this dissertation addresses possible causes for the sex difference in the motor response of a low-intensity fatiguing contraction of the elbow flexor muscles to an acute stressor (difficult mental math) in young, healthy adults. Muscle fatigue increased for men and women when exposed to the stressor, but impairment was more prominent for the women. This work showed that fatigue in the central nervous system, specifically in cortical motor and premotor areas, as well as relaxation rates of the muscle (quantified with cortical stimulation) were not …

Sexualized Violence, Moral Disintegration And Ethical Advocacy, Melissa Mosko Oct 2011

Sexualized Violence, Moral Disintegration And Ethical Advocacy, Melissa Mosko

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation develops and defends a conception of sexualized violence that is rooted in philosophical theories of violence, and at the same time helps us understand the way that violence is connected to various kinds of oppression, namely, the oppression of women. It argues that sexualized violence, which is typically theorized through related notions of physical violation and psychological trauma, is best understood in terms of its moral quality. Sexualized violence against women is fundamentally a moral problem insofar as it disrupts victims' ability to grow and develop in relationships with others, to conceive and meet responsibilities to and emerging …

Absence And Sociality In Live Film Narration: Poets Of The Unreeled In Miami, Alan Clinton Oct 2011

Absence And Sociality In Live Film Narration: Poets Of The Unreeled In Miami, Alan Clinton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

"Every medium, in its presence, presents its own absence." This was the mantra running through my head as I lay flat on my back, eyes closed, on the concrete floor of a dark, empty room in the Dorsch Gallery in Miami, an extra dose of Klonopin running through my blood to calm my nerves before the show. It was the explanation of why I would soon be entering the Gallery’s yard to participate with Walter K. Lew and several University of Miami poets in the strange phenomenon Lew has dubbed "movie telling," or live film narration. It was, …

Standing In Livestock's 'Long Shadow': The Ethics Of Eating Meat On A Small Planet, Brian G. Henning Oct 2011

Standing In Livestock's 'Long Shadow': The Ethics Of Eating Meat On A Small Planet, Brian G. Henning

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

A primary contribution of this essay is to provide a survey of the human and environmental impacts of livestock production. We will find that the mass consumption of animals is a primary reason why humans are hungry, fat, or sick and is a leading cause of the depletion and pollution of waterways, the degradation and deforestation of the land, the extinction of species, and the warming of the planet. Recognizing these harms, this essay will consider various solutions being proposed to ““shrink”” livestock's long shadow, including proposed ““technical”” or ““market”” solutions, a transition to ““new agrarian”” methods, and a vegetarian …

A Fig For Your Philosophy And Great Knowledge In The Sciences: Observation, Deception, Scientific Fraud And Social Authority In The Antebellum Museum, Jeff Nagle , '12 Oct 2011

A Fig For Your Philosophy And Great Knowledge In The Sciences: Observation, Deception, Scientific Fraud And Social Authority In The Antebellum Museum, Jeff Nagle , '12

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

There is an increasingly sophisticated literature on the role played by museums in reaffirming social norms of examination in the antebellum United States. This literature has largely focused on the way museums presented this knowledge to the public, not how audiences reacted to claims of scientific authority. Popular reaction to pseudoscientific claims demonstrated to the public in the scientific context of museums, in this case Charles Redheffer's 1812 perpetual motion device and P. T. Barnum's Fejee Mermaid, shed light on the close relationship between early popular scientific observation and ways of judging authenticity and deception in the commercial and social …

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

Diabetes exacerbates ischemic heart disease morbidity and mortality via incompletely understood mechanisms. Although adiponectin (APN) reduces myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury in nondiabetic animals, whether APN's cardioprotective actions are altered in diabetes, a pathologic condition with endogenously reduced APN, has never been investigated. High-fat diet (HD)-induced diabetic mice and normal diet (ND) controls were subjected to MI via coronary artery ligation, and given vehicle or APN globular domain (gAPN, 2 μg/g) 10 min before reperfusion. Compared to ND mice (where gAPN exerted pronounced cardioprotection), HD mice manifested greater MI/R injury, and a tripled gAPN dose was requisite to achieve cardioprotective extent …

Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Across Developmental Stages In Mice, Sheryl Jayne Stevens Oct 2011

Effects Of Chronic Variable Stress Across Developmental Stages In Mice, Sheryl Jayne Stevens

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a response to trauma exposure that involves a number of symptoms that can be highly impairing to affected individuals. Only a subset of those exposed to traumatic events will develop the disorder, which is conceptualized as developing via conditional fear. Research into factors predisposing for PTSD is needed. Furthermore, little work has been done to investigate predisposing factors in children more specifically. This research tests the effects of stress exposure on subsequent fear learning, across developmental stages in mice, as a model for PTSD. Juvenile and adult male mice were exposed to chronic variable stress …
