Although thiazolidinediones (TZD) effectively improve hyperglycemia and increase adiponectin, a proinsulin-sensitizing adipokine, they also increase adipogenesis via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)γ induction, which may be undesirable. Recent safety concerns about some TZD have prompted the search for next generation agents that can enhance glycemic control and adiponectin independent of PPARγ or adipogenesis. Reminiscent of TZD action, a human adenovirus, adenovirus 36 (Ad36), up-regulates PPARγ, induces adipogenesis, and improves systemic glycemic control in vivo. We determined whether this effect of Ad36 requires PPARγ and/or adipogenesis. Glucose uptake and relevant cell signaling were determined in mock-infected or human adenoviruses Ad36 or Ad2-infected …

Between Victim And Agent: A Third-Way Feminist Account Of Trafficking For Sex Work, Shelley Cavalieri
Between Victim And Agent: A Third-Way Feminist Account Of Trafficking For Sex Work, Shelley Cavalieri
Indiana Law Journal
Feminist legal theorists have devoted enormous attention to conceptualizing the issues of sex work and trafficking for sexual purposes. While these theories vary, they typically fall into one of two camps. The abolitionist perspective, having grown out of dominance feminist theory, perceives sex work as inherently exploitative. In contrast, a second group of theorists adopts a liberal notion of individual choice and draws on the poststructuralist rejection of gender essentialism to envision a theoretical model of sex-worker rights. The legal and public policies that grow from these two models are similarly polarized. Radical feminist abolitionists are often strange bedfellows with …

According to the Hutterite chronicles, the Habans arrived from Austrian Tyrol, Switzerland and northernmost Italy and stayed in four regions of Slovakia (Sobotište, Vel'ké, Leváre, Moravský, Svätý, Ján, Trenčín). There are some communities in western Slovakia, which retained their Haban cultural identity and still identify themselves as descendents of the Hutterite population with their own specific customs. Slovak Habans are typical founder population with significant social isolation for which high degree of inbreeding is typical. Present study investigated STR polymorphisms as a powerful genetic tool for population genetic studies. The aim was to perform a comparative, population genetic study based …

Food insecurity has been linked to high-risk sexual behavior in sub-Saharan Africa, but there are limited data on these links among people living with HIV/AIDS, and on the mechanisms for how food insecurity predisposes individuals to risky sexual practices. We undertook a series of in-depth open-ended interviews with 41 individuals living with HIV/AIDS to understand the impact of food insecurity on sexual-risk behaviors. Participants were recruited from the Immune Suppression Clinic at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Mbarara, Uganda. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, translated, and coded following the strategy of grounded theory. Four major themes emerged …
Structural And Functional Changes In Iota-Carrageenan Upon Addition Of Salts And Sweeteners, Cordelia Running
Structural And Functional Changes In Iota-Carrageenan Upon Addition Of Salts And Sweeteners, Cordelia Running
Open Access Theses
Iota‐carrageenan, a sulfated galactan from marine algae, is used by food and pharmaceutical industries for its gelling and thickening properties. This hydrocolloid adopts a variety of solid‐state structures, depending on the amount and nature of co‐solutes, and displays a wide range of functional properties. Information about the relationships between atomic structure and macroscopic behavior, however, is still lacking. The overall goal of this research was to understand the effects of cations (Na+ and Ca2+) and sweeteners (sucrose and Rebiana, a non‐nutritive sweetener) on the three‐dimensional structure, solution and thermal properties of iota‐carrageenan. X‐ray diffraction analyses revealed typical half‐staggered molecular structures …

Sustained Cd8+ T Cell Memory Inflation After Infection With A Single-Cycle Cytomegalovirus., Christopher M Snyder, Kathy S Cho, Elizabeth L Bonnett, Jane E Allan, Ann B Hill
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a β-herpesvirus that establishes a lifelong latent or persistent infection. A hallmark of chronic CMV infection is the lifelong persistence of large numbers of virus-specific CD8+ effector/effector memory T cells, a phenomenon called "memory inflation". How the virus continuously stimulates these T cells without being eradicated remains an enigma. The prevailing view is that CMV establishes a low grade "smoldering" infection characterized by tiny bursts of productive infection which are rapidly extinguished, leaving no detectable virus but replenishing the latent pool and leaving the immune system in a highly charged state. However, since abortive reactivation with limited …

This paper shows the importance of Python in Houdini. It goes into how and why Python is so important in Houdini. We see how we can build tools in Python that can be invaluable in the making of 3d animations in Houdini. Through building tools that help Houdini the programmer needs a way to build a GUI application. In building a GUI application we used wxWidget. Showing what wxWidget and how it can be used in Python. Then showing the strengths of wxWidget we compared it to Python's built in GUI application builder Tkinter, and from there showed how wxPython …

In doing so a 3D computer model was engineered using a 3D modeling software system called 3ds MAX and a …
Why They Say "No" (Casi—"No"): Countries That Reject Legalized Casino Gambling, William N. Thompson
Why They Say "No" (Casi—"No"): Countries That Reject Legalized Casino Gambling, William N. Thompson
UNLV Gaming Law Journal
Most world venues have legalized casino gambling. Indeed, the numbers of venues has been growing rapidly. In 1986, seventy-seven nations permitted legal casino gambling; in 1996, 109; while recent reports indicate 132 countries have casinos. Nonetheless, there are several cases of jurisdictions rejecting the legalization of casinos.
This article seeks to find common reasons for the rejections, and examines the following ten venues: Bhutan, Brazil, Japan, Liechtenstein, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, and Norway. The study utilizes a framework from the book The Last Resort: Success and Failure in Campaigns for Casinos, by John Dombrink and William N. Thompson. …

The Pendulum Swings: Commerce Clause And Tenth Amendment Challenges To Paspa, Thomas L. Skinner Iii
UNLV Gaming Law Journal
The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (“PASPA”) prohibits betting, gambling, or wagering on competitive games (“sports betting,” “sports gambling,” or “sports wagering”) wherein professional or amateur athletes participate or are intended to participate. Enacted in 1992, PASPA makes it illegal for any government entity or person to participate in or sponsor sports betting in all but a few states. Exemptions were carved out for parimutuel animal racing, jai-alai games, and for sports betting gambling schemes already in existence or that would become authorized within one year from the effective date of PASPA, provided that the municipality authorizing sports betting …

Equal Citizenship And The Individual Right To Vote, Jospeh Fishkin
Equal Citizenship And The Individual Right To Vote, Jospeh Fishkin
Indiana Law Journal
An emerging consensus among election law scholars urges courts to break out of “the stagnant discourse of individual rights and competing state interests” and instead adopt a jurisprudence of “structural” democratic values that sidelines individual rights. This structuralist approach won out in the great “rightsstructure” debate in election law, and came to dominate the field, during a period in which the main controversies—vote dilution, gerrymandering, ballot access, campaign finance—were all ones in which the structuralist move was illuminating. However, structuralism is now causing both scholars and courts to evaluate the new wave of vote denial controversies, over such issues as …
Saving Seaborn: Ownership Not Marriage As The Basis Of Family Taxation, Dennis J. Ventry Jr
Saving Seaborn: Ownership Not Marriage As The Basis Of Family Taxation, Dennis J. Ventry Jr
Indiana Law Journal
One of the most famous Supreme Court tax cases celebrated its eightieth birthday last year. In Poe v. Seaborn, the Court reified two principles of the federal income tax: ownership determines tax liability and state law determines ownership. This Article affirms that family taxation continues to follow ownership, not marriage, despite the federal government’s position that the “ownership equals taxability” rule applies almost exclusively to heterosexual spouses. Verifying the vitality of this principle carries significant implications for all families, particularly nontraditional families. Under the aegis of Seaborn, the principle authorizes certain members of state-recognized relationships—marriages, domestic partnerships, civil unions—to file …
