A Pilot Study Of Brief Group Therapies For Preschool Children: Parent Training Vs Group Play Therapy Vs Project Group, William S. Evans, Jr., M.D., Susan A. Black, M.D. Oct 2011

A Pilot Study Of Brief Group Therapies For Preschool Children: Parent Training Vs Group Play Therapy Vs Project Group, William S. Evans, Jr., M.D., Susan A. Black, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The optimum modality for treating preschool age children with behavioral and emotional problems is uncertain. One study showed that children with good ego strength respond to psychotherapy independent of whether it is group or individual psychotherapy, provided that a minimum period of psychotherapy occurs (ovick, 1965). The literature has demonstrated that parent training, individual play therapy, and group therapy are all effective modes of treatment with children (Axline, 1969; Moreland, et ai, 1983; Pesco solido & Petrella, 1986). Due to the limited psychiatric resources in the military setting and increasing demand for service, the option for individual therapy may be …

Pharmacologic Treatments Of Cocaine Dependence, Michael B. Knable, D.O. Oct 2011

Pharmacologic Treatments Of Cocaine Dependence, Michael B. Knable, D.O.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The rapid escalation of cocaine abuse in the United States in the 1980's has generated a host of interesting hypotheses on various aspects of this problem. After a succinct discussion of epidemiologic, clinical, and neuro-pharmacologic aspects of cocaine abuse, a survey of the current literature on psychopharmacologic management of dependence is offered. While several agents have emerged as useful adjunctive treatments for abstinence syndromes it is important for the clinician to remember that there is not official approval for such treatments. Additionally, psychotherapeutic maneuvers, which remain the major tools in treatment of addicts, should not be overlooked when an experimental …

Differential Effects Of Accumbens Core Vs. Shell Lesions In A Rat Concurrent Conditioned Place Preference Paradigm For Cocaine Vs. Social Interaction, Michael Fritz, Rana El Rawas, Sabine Klement, Kai Kummer, Michael J. Mayr, Vincent Eggart, Ahmad Salti, Michael T. Bardo, Alois Saria, Gerald Zernig

Center for Drug Abuse Research Translation Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: A main challenge in the therapy of drug dependent individuals is to help them reactivate interest in non-drug-associated activities. Among these activities, social interaction is doubly important because treatment adherence itself depends on it. We previously developed a rat experimental model based on the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm in which only four 15-min episodes of social interaction with a gender- and weight-matched male conspecific (i) reversed CPP from cocaine to social interaction despite continuing cocaine training and (ii) prevented the reinstatement of cocaine CPP. In the present study, we investigated if the two subregions of the nucleus accumbens …

Molecular Diversity Of Fungal Phylotypes Co-Amplified Alongside Nematodes From Coastal And Deep-Sea Marine Environments, Punyasloke Bhadury, Holly Bik, John D. Lambshead, Melanie C. Austen, Gary R. Smerdon, Alex D. Rogers

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Nematodes and fungi are both ubiquitous in marine environments, yet few studies have investigated relationships between these two groups. Microbial species share many well-documented interactions with both free-living and parasitic nematode species, and limited data from previous studies have suggested ecological associations between fungi and nematodes in benthic marine habitats. This study aimed to further document the taxonomy and distribution of fungal taxa often co-amplified from nematode specimens. A total of 15 fungal 18S rRNA phylotypes were isolated from nematode specimens representing both deep-sea and shallow water habitats; all fungal isolates displayed high pairwise sequence identities with published data in …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

The molecular bases of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unclear. We used a lipidomic approach to identify lipid abnormalities in the brains of subjects with AD (N = 37) compared to age-matched controls (N = 17). The analyses revealed statistically detectable elevations in levels of non-esterified monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and mead acid (20:3n-9) in mid-frontal cortex, temporal cortex and hippocampus of AD patients. Further studies showed that brain mRNAs encoding for isoforms of the rate-limiting enzyme in MUFAs biosynthesis, stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD-1, SCD-5a and SCD-5b), were elevated in subjects with AD. The monounsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio ('desaturation index')--displayed a strong …

Biomimicry: Architecture That Imitates Nature’S Functions, Forms And Parts, Kostika Spaho

Architecture Theses and Projects

Architecture imitates nature’s functions, forms, and parts in order to solve the problems of sustainability, efficiency, strength, durability and more. Nature displays its solutions to these problems through endless examples, which appear everywhere on this planet. Such designs represent nature’s work, which has evolved over a “3.8 billion year period.” Nature’s creations are carefully articulated in order to fit in with their context, and to optimize their need for energy and material. It is likely that the answers to most of our design questions lie amid the surrounding organic fabric.

Early Exposure To Paraquat Sensitizes Dopaminergic Neurons To Subsequent Silencing Of Pink1 Gene Expression In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Cao Huang, Jianbin Tong, Xugang Xia Oct 2011

Early Exposure To Paraquat Sensitizes Dopaminergic Neurons To Subsequent Silencing Of Pink1 Gene Expression In Mice., Hongxia Zhou, Cao Huang, Jianbin Tong, Xugang Xia

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Environmental exposure, genetic modification, and aging are considered risky for Parkinson's disease (PD). How these risk factors cooperate to induce progressive neurodegeneration in PD remains largely unknown. Paraquat is an herbicide commonly used for weed and grass control. Exposure to paraquat is associated with the increased incidence of PD. In contrast to familial PD, most sporadic PD cases do not have genetic mutation, but may suffer from partial dysfunction of neuron-protective genes as aging. Using conditional transgenic RNAi, we showed that temporal silencing of PINK1 expression in adult mice increased striatal dopamine, the phenotype that could not be induced by …

Population Attributable Risk Of Unintentional Childhood Poisoning In Karachi Pakistan, Bilal Ahmed, Zafar Fatmi, Amna R Siddiqui

Department of Medicine

Background: The percentage of unintentional childhood poisoning cases in a given population attributable to specific risk factors (i.e., the population attributable risk) which can be calculated, determination of such risk factors associated with potentially modifiable risk factors, are necessary to focus on the prevention strategies.

Methods: We calculated PARs, using 120 cases with unintentional poisoning and 360 controls in a hospital based matched case- control study. The risk factors were accessibility to hazardous chemicals and medicines due to unsafe storage, child behavior reported as hyperactive, storage of kerosene and petroleum in soft drink bottles, low socioeconomic class, less education of …

Private Ordering With Shareholder Bylaws, D. Gordon Smith, Matthew Wright, Marcus Kai Hintze Oct 2011

Private Ordering With Shareholder Bylaws, D. Gordon Smith, Matthew Wright, Marcus Kai Hintze

Fordham Law Review

In this Article, we propose legal reforms to empower shareholders in public corporations. Currently, most shareholders participate in corporate governance in three ways: they vote, they sell, and they sue. We would expand the menu for shareholders in public corporations by enabling them to contract using shareholder bylaws. We contend that such private ordering will improve shareholder monitoring of managers and create laboratories of corporate governance that benefit the entire corporate governance system.
