Disengagement, Petra Tuns Oct 2011

Disengagement, Petra Tuns

Theses

Disengagement is a body of photographic work that recounts my memories of suffering from depression. My aesthetic is directly influenced by the pathology of the illness. My thesis aims to let the viewer witness how depression has impacted me, so they can understand the disease on a more personal level rather than a stereotypical image, such as TV commercials for anti-depression medication. I analyze both depression in art and the history of depression through the writings of Christine Ross, and Michel Foucault. Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory also inform my work. They are also the foundation from which I defend …

Modeling Nitrogen Loading In A Small Watershed In Southwest China Using A Dndc Model With Hydrological Enhancements, Jia Deng, Zaixing Zhou, Bo Zhu, Xunhua Zheng, Changsheng Li, X. Wang, Z. Jian Oct 2011

Modeling Nitrogen Loading In A Small Watershed In Southwest China Using A Dndc Model With Hydrological Enhancements, Jia Deng, Zaixing Zhou, Bo Zhu, Xunhua Zheng, Changsheng Li, X. Wang, Z. Jian

Faculty Publications

The degradation of water quality has been observed worldwide, and inputs of nitrogen (N), along with other nutrients, play a key role in the process of contamination. The quantification of N loading from non-point sources at a watershed scale has long been a challenge. Process-based models have been developed to address this problem. Because N loading from non-point sources result from interactions between biogeochemical and hydrological processes, a model framework must include both types of processes if it is to be useful. This paper reports the results of a study in which we integrated two fundamental hydrologic features, the SCS …

Shaping Topographies Of Home: A Political Ecology Of Migration, Carylanna Kathryn Taylor Oct 2011

Shaping Topographies Of Home: A Political Ecology Of Migration, Carylanna Kathryn Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Even from afar, transnational migrants influence how their households and communities of origin use natural resources. This study depicts the circulation of people, funds, and ideas within transnational families that extend from a Honduran village to the United States. Developing a "political ecology of migration" approach, I show how these circulations can reshape resource use practices and the socio-economic and bio-physical topographies of emigrants' former homes. The project advances anthropological thought by linking rich literatures on political ecology and transnationalism through a multi-method ethnography of transnational families. The study is also relevant to emigrants, community members, and practitioners interested in …

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity

Wayne McGregor is hunting the ghost in the machine. Inspired by Roy Porter’s Flesh in the Age of Reason (detailing cognitive exploration during the Enlightenment), FAR is a kinetically explosive interpretation of the mind-body connection. McGregor’s dancers, classically trained and moving with an almost super-human energy, whip themselves around the stage in a blur of spins and disjointed angles - hyperextended arms and legs doing the near im-possible. They search for the divine relationship between the body and the soul. McGregor’s work spans all mediums: from the stage (2010’s ENTITY) to film (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) to …

Brek Eaton, Barbara Caldarone, Katie Cavino, Christina Ruiz, Matthew Terry, Allison Fedolak, Daguang Wang, Afshin Ghavami, David A. Lowe, Dani Brunner, Ronald J. Lukas, Alan P. Kozikowski

Translational Neuroscience

Depression, a common neurological condition, is one of the leading causes of disability and suicide worldwide. Standard treatment, targeting monoamine transporters selective for the neurotransmitters serotonin and noradrenaline, is not able to help many patients that are poor responders. This study advances the development of sazetidine-A analogues that interact with α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as partial agonists and that possess favorable antidepressant profiles. The resulting compounds that are highly selective for the α4β2 subtype of nAChR over α3β4-nAChRs are partial agonists at the α4β2 subtype and have excellent antidepressant behavioral profiles as measured by the mouse forced swim test. …

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

Studies of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) have identified threshold doses of T cells below which severe GVHD is usually absent. However, little is known regarding optimal T-cell dosing as it relates to engraftment, immune reconstitution, and relapse. To begin to address this question, we developed a 2-step myeloablative approach to haploidentical HSCT in which 27 patients conditioned with total body irradiation (TBI) were given a fixed dose of donor T cells (HSCT step 1), followed by cyclophosphamide (CY) for T-cell tolerization. A CD34-selected HSC product (HSCT step 2) was infused after CY. A dose of 2 × 10(8)/kg …

Rapid Intraosseous Vascular Access While Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, Stephen W. Borron, Diana F. Montez, Patti Haas, Thomas Philbeck, Juan C. Arias Oct 2011

Rapid Intraosseous Vascular Access While Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, Stephen W. Borron, Diana F. Montez, Patti Haas, Thomas Philbeck, Juan C. Arias

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: The ability to obtain rapid vascular access for fluid or medication administration is standard of care when working in emergency conditions. Hazardous material incidents require more sophisticated levels of personal protective equipment (PPE) that can interfere with fine motor skills needed for intravenous line placement. This study included participants representing a variety of clinical professions who could potentially face that challenge. Participants were tested for their ability to place intraosseous (IO) lines for quick antidote administration wearing various levels of PPE.

Design: This was an experimental study utilizing live anesthetized goats. Setting: The study was conducted in the lab …

The Effect Of Shifts In Medium Types On The Growth And Morphology Of Spirulina Platensis (Arthrospira Platensis), Yean-Chang Chen Oct 2011

The Effect Of Shifts In Medium Types On The Growth And Morphology Of Spirulina Platensis (Arthrospira Platensis), Yean-Chang Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In order to reduce the cultural cost and increase the biomass of Spirulina platensis cultures, two basic culture media were used in the present study, the Zarrouk (Z9) and Provasoli's enriched seawater (PES) media. They were re-modified into five media by adding varied concentrations of NaCl, NaHCO3 and seawater (salinity). S. platensis could grow well in all of these media. The Z9 medium provided the best growth rate at the end of culture and the PES medium provided the best initial growth curve slope. After the media were shifted from PES to Z9, the long algal filaments fragmented to form …

Confrontations With Death: Psychological Responses During Internship, Michael Miller, M.D. Oct 2011

Confrontations With Death: Psychological Responses During Internship, Michael Miller, M.D.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

During internship, the daily confrontation with the consequences of disease contributes much to the distress which young physicians experience (I). Not only are interns responsible for first line medical care, they must also provide emotional support for their patients struggling with pain, disability and impending death. This paper seeks to examine some of the factors responsible for the turmoil involved in caring for these dying patients.

Our conceptions of death and dying are determined to a large extent by the cultural context in which we live. Compared with other times in which death was not so ego alien, we presently …
