Rapid Expansion Of Oceanic Anoxia Immediately Before The End-Permian Mass Extinction, Gregory A. Brennecka, Achim D. Herrmann, Thomas J. Algeo, Ariel D. Anbar

Faculty Publications

Periods of oceanic anoxia have had a major influence on the evolutionary history of Earth and are often contemporaneous with mass extinction events. Changes in global (as opposed to local) redox conditions can be potentially evaluated using U system proxies. The intensity and timing of oceanic redox changes associated with the end-Permian extinction horizon (EH) were assessed from variations in 238U/ 235U δ 238U) and Th/U ratios in a carbonate section at Dawen in southern China. The EH is characterized by shifts toward lower δ 238U values (from -0.37‰ to -0.65‰), indicative of an expansion of oceanic anoxia, and higher …

A method of providing emergency related information to and from a centralized location over a wireless network. The method utilizes cellular phones in emergency communications and entails two embodiments that employ location-aware technologies, in portable form, in security applications. One embodiment serves as a modern high-tech “neighborhood watch,” enabling law enforcement access to the many “eyes and ears” of the public simultaneously via available cell phones. Cell phones with embedded digital cameras allow the instant capture and remote submission of suspicious circumstances to law enforcement through pictures or video.

The Tubulin Deglutamylase Ccpp-1 Regulates The Function And Stability Of Sensory Cilia In C. Elegans, Robert O'Hagan, Brian P. Piasecki, Malan Silva, Prasad Phirke, Ken C Q Nguyen, David H. Hall, Peter Swoboda, Maureen M. Barr

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: Posttranslational modifications (PTMs) such as acetylation, detyrosination, and polyglutamylation have long been considered markers of stable microtubules and have recently been proposed to guide molecular motors to specific subcellular destinations. Microtubules can be deglutamylated by the cytosolic carboxypeptidase CCP1. Loss of CCP1 in mice causes cerebellar Purkinje cell degeneration. Cilia, which are conserved organelles that play important diverse roles in animal development and sensation, contain axonemes comprising microtubules that are especially prone to PTMs. Results: Here, we report that a CCP1 homolog, CCPP-1, regulates the ciliary localization of the kinesin-3 KLP-6 and the polycystin PKD-2 in male-specific sensory neurons …

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Healthy brain aging and cognitive function are promoted by exercise. The benefits of exercise are attributed to several mechanisms, many which highlight its neuroprotective role via actions that enhance neurogenesis, neuronal morphology and/or neurotrophin release. However, the brain is also composed of glial and vascular elements, and comparatively less is known regarding the effects of exercise on these components in the aging brain. Here, we show that aerobic exercise at mid-age decreased markers of unhealthy brain aging including astrocyte hypertrophy, a hallmark of brain aging. Middle-aged female mice were assigned to a sedentary group or provided a running wheel for …

Laparoscopic Surgery Recording As An Adjunct To Conventional Modalities Of Teaching Gross Anatomy, Pananghat A. Kumar, Mark Norrish, Thomas Oct 2011

Laparoscopic Surgery Recording As An Adjunct To Conventional Modalities Of Teaching Gross Anatomy, Pananghat A. Kumar, Mark Norrish, Thomas

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: In order to increase their effectiveness, methods of teaching morphological sciences need to be revised to incorporate the recent technological advances made in the field of medicine. Teaching human structure with conventional methods of prosections using dissected cadaveric specimen alone quite often fails to prepare students adequately for their clinical training. A learner-oriented method, incorporating three dimensional spatial anatomy and more closely mirroring the clinical setting, is required. Methods: With these challenges in mind, a 30-minute slow-paced video recording of a cholecystectomy performed laproscopically on a 45 year-old lady was adapted to supplement the conventional teaching of anatomy of …

High Stakes Play: Early Childhood Special Educators' Perspectives Of Play In Pre-Kindergarten Classrooms, Joanne Scandling Manwaring

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined Early Childhood Special Educators' perceptions of play as a developmentally appropriate practice in special education prekindergarten classrooms in one southeastern school district. Through purposeful sampling, eight prekindergarten special educators were identified because they held multiple teaching certifications and some held National Board certification. The participants had many years of experience in pre-kindergarten special education, and were professional development trainers, teacher mentors and or leaders in the prekindergarten special education community. These eight accomplished pre-kindergarten special education teachers were interviewed using an informal, semi-structured format about their beliefs concerning play, how they implement it in their classrooms as …

Evaluation Of Prebiotic And Probiotic Effects On The Intestinal Gut Microbiota And Histology Of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar L.), Mads Kristiansen, Daniel L. Merrifield, Jose L.Gonzalez Vecino, Reidar Myklebust, Einar Ringø

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

In the present study the impact on gut microbiology and indigenous gut histology of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was investigated following feeding of a control and a prebiotic (EWOS prebiosal®) diet and ex vivo exposure to saline or the probiotic bacterium Carnobacterium divergens. The results showed that ex vivo exposure of C. divergens at 108 CFU ml-1 did not cause cell damage to the intestine tract of Atlantic salmon. Furthermore, prior provision of dietary prebiotic elevated the ability of C. divergens to adhere to the epithelium or mucus layer in the proximal intestine, where culturable heterotrophic bacterial …

Cannabis Exposure In An Omani Child : First Case Report From Oman, Thuraya A. Al-Shidhani, Vinita Arora Oct 2011

Cannabis Exposure In An Omani Child : First Case Report From Oman, Thuraya A. Al-Shidhani, Vinita Arora

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

We report a confirmed case of cannabis exposure in an Omani female child with developmental delay. Cannabis exposure in children can lead to many consequences; for example, chronic use can result in developmental delay, abnormal behaviour, and hyperactivity while there is a risk of coma with acute exposure. It is important for clinicians to consider substance abuse as a differential diagnosis for similar presentations in paediatric patients, noting that children are at risk of cannabis exposure if their parents/caregivers are cannabis users.

Handel's Opus 2: The Flutist's Perspective, Andra Ruth Hawks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This project explores the trio sonotas of Handel's Opus 2 from the flutist's perspective. Of the many editions that were published, the primary source for this paper is the 1789 edition by Dr. Samuel Arnold. Handel's music was often marketed toward the widest amateur audience possible, and this collection was no different: the title page reads as follows, Six Sonatas for Two Violins, Two Hautboys, or Two German Flutes, & a Violoncello/ First Published at Amsterdam 1731/ Composed by G. F. Handel. Range, key signature, and idiomatic string music can make pieces difficult at best, if not unplayable, for the …

Signquote: A Remote Testing Facility For Eliciting Signed Qualitative Feedback, Jerry Schnepp, Rosalee Wolfe, Brent Shiver, John Mcdonald, Jorge Toro

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Sign synthesis is still an evolving technology and improving it requires the elicitation of qualitative feedback from users. Current options for acquiring qualitative feedback are limited. Face-toface tests conducted in sign language are expensive. On the other hand, remote tests do not use the preferred language of the test participants. A new tool, SignQUOTE, (Signed Qualitative Usability Online Testing Environment) is a configurable, cross platform remote testing system based entirely on sign language. It includes an innovative method for capturing qualitative feedback in sign language via webcam. In a comparison study, participants viewed animations of American Sign Language and gave …

Thrombospondin1 Deficiency Reduces Obesity-Associated Inflammation And Improves Insulin Sensitivity In A Diet-Induced Obese Mouse Model, Yanzhang Li, Xiaopeng Tong, Courtney Rumala, Kate Clemons, Shuxia Wang Oct 2011

Thrombospondin1 Deficiency Reduces Obesity-Associated Inflammation And Improves Insulin Sensitivity In A Diet-Induced Obese Mouse Model, Yanzhang Li, Xiaopeng Tong, Courtney Rumala, Kate Clemons, Shuxia Wang

Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Obesity is prevalent worldwide and is associated with insulin resistance. Advanced studies suggest that obesity-associated low-grade chronic inflammation contributes to the development of insulin resistance and other metabolic complications. Thrombospondin 1 (TSP1) is a multifunctional extracellular matrix protein that is up-regulated in inflamed adipose tissue. A recent study suggests a positive correlation of TSP1 with obesity, adipose inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, the direct effect of TSP1 on obesity and insulin resistance is not known. Therefore, we investigated the role of TSP1 in mediating obesity-associated inflammation and insulin resistance by using TSP1 knockout mice.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Male TSP1-/- mice …
