Flagellar Formation In C-Ring-Defective Mutants By Overproduction Of Flii, The Atpase Specific For Flagellar Type Iii Secretion, Manabu Konishi, Masaomi Kanbe, Jonathan L. Mcmurry, Shin-Ichi Aizawa

Faculty Articles

The flagellar cytoplasmic ring (C ring), which consists of three proteins, FliG, FliM, and FliN, is located on the cytoplasmic side of the flagellum. The C ring is a multifunctional structure necessary for flagellar protein secretion, torque generation, and switching of the rotational direction of the motor. The deletion of any one of the fliG, fliM, and fliN genes results in a Fla - phenotype. Here, we show that the overproduction of the flagellum-specific ATPase FliI overcomes the inability of basal bodies with partial C-ring structures to produce complete flagella. Flagella made upon FliI overproduction were paralyzed, indicating that an …

Just Doing What They Gotta Do: Single Black Custodial Fathers Coping With The Stresses And Reaping The Rewards Of Parenting, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

For single African American custodial fathers, parenting stress is exacerbated by the cultural expectation that Black fathers are "normally" absent and by the clustering of stresses that Black men are more likely to encounter. This sample of African American fathers have used a repertoire of problem-focused and cognitive coping strategies, including some that are frequently considered "culturally specific." Twenty Black single custodial fathers are interviewed and their narratives are analyzed for concepts and thematic categories related to stress and coping. Their narratives indicate that certain strategies are avoided because (a) these strategies are not available to them and (b) they …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Introduction: Breast carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor and the leading cause of cancer death in women. In western countries, a sharp increase in the detection of breast carcinoma, largely due to widespread use of mammography, has recently led to a fall in breast cancer mortality. This, however, is not true for less developed countries, in which mortality continues to rise.
Objective:The aim of this study was to acquire information about the extent and spread of breast carcinoma in our Patients by grading the tumors, determining the tumor size, and axillary lymph node status, staging of the tumors …

Sirenomelia, The Mermaid Syndrome: Case Report And A Brief Review Of Literature, Rozina Sikandar, Shama Munim Oct 2009

Sirenomelia, The Mermaid Syndrome: Case Report And A Brief Review Of Literature, Rozina Sikandar, Shama Munim

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Sirenomelia, the Mermaid Syndrome is a rare and lethal congenital anomaly with an incidence of one in 60,000 to 70,000 pregnancies. Sirenomelia is characterized by complete fusion of the lower limbs, commonly associated with renal agenesis, absent external genitalia and other gastrointestinal defects. Another pathognomonic finding is the presence of single umbilical, persistent vitelline artery which is the chief distinguishing anatomic finding from Caudal Regression Syndrome. We report a case of termination of pregnancy done on the basis of ultrasound diagnosis of bilateral renal agenesis with no liquor volume. The foetus was identified to have characteristic features of Sirenomelia at …

H.R. 3200: The Demise Of Health Care Quality And The Beginning Of The Rationing Of Medical Services In The United States, Sarah Blanzy

Senior Honors Theses

On July 14, 2009, the bill H.R. 3200 America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 was introduced on the floor of the House of Representatives. This bill proposes legislation that President Obama and its supporters promise will improve the health care system in the United States. The opponents of the bill, however, believe that H.R. 3200 will negatively impact the quality of America‟s health care. The bill drastically increases government involvement in the health care process, introduces a public option, which will eventually lead to a single-payer system and proposes regulating the wages of physicians in effort to minimize health …

Accounting For Differences Among Patients In The Fda Approval Process, Mark Van Der Laan, Anup Malani, Oliver Van Der Bembom Oct 2009

Accounting For Differences Among Patients In The Fda Approval Process, Mark Van Der Laan, Anup Malani, Oliver Van Der Bembom

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The FDA employs an average-patient standard when reviewing drugs: it approves a drug only if the average patient (in clinical trials) does better on the drug than on control. It is common, however, for different patients to respond differently to a drug. Therefore, the average-patient standard can result in approval of a drug with significant negative effects for certain patient subgroups (false positives) and disapproval of drugs with significant positive effects for other patient subgroups (false negatives). Drug companies have a financial incentive to avoid false negatives. After their clinical trials reveal that their drug does not benefit the average …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

EuroSCORE (European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation) used for calculating the risk of the postoperative mortality rate for patients undergoing open-heart surgery may be able to predict postoperative complications as well. Consecutive cases of isolated on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) (n=1552) performed between 1991 and 2006 at our hospital group were placed into a systematic database. Patients were stratified using additive EuroSCORE. Incidence of postoperative mortality, morbidity (bleeding, heart failure, mediastinitis, pneumonia, myocardial infarction, renal failure, and stroke), and recovery time (intubation time, ICU stay, and postoperative length of stay) was assessed in each EuroSCORE group. EuroSCORE was …
