Profiling Maine’S Long Term Support System [Project Brief], Eileen Griffin Jd

Disability & Aging

A recent report by the Muskie School and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services provides a new way of looking at the state’s long term support system. With an emphasis on developing a common approach for description and analysis across programs, the profile reveals that users of long term services and supports in Maine span all age groups and types of service users. In fact, 28% are ages 17 or younger and 29% are between the age of 35 and 64. Long term service users include people with physical impairments, cognitive and intellectual disabilities, and people who need …

Protecting The Family Pet: The New Face Of Maryland: Domestic Violence Protective Orders, Gary C. Norman Oct 2009

Protecting The Family Pet: The New Face Of Maryland: Domestic Violence Protective Orders, Gary C. Norman

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

Domestic violence is on the rise, and pets are increasingly becoming the victims of marital disputes. There is a demonstrated link between acts and offenses of domestic violence and animal abuse. Domestic abusers often do not think twice about beating or otherwise harming pets that have bonded with the other spouse in order to control, coerce, intimidate, or cause emotional harm to that spouse.

There is an emerging awareness that animals are more than just property. Several states have recognized, through the enactment of legislation fortifying their family law systems, that animals play an integral role in the lives of …

In 2000 the Athletics & Recreation Department at UMass Boston Implemented a five year strategic plan that would more realistically align sports sponsorship with available financial and facility resources. We reduced the number of sports sponsored from 20 to 14 maintaining 7 sports for women and 7 sports for men. The only sports maintained without a facility were Men’s baseball and Cross Country Track. We eliminated football, swimming and indoor & outdoor track and field for men and women.

Since 2005 The Athletics & Recreation Department has been focused on University wide transition and planning efforts. In that period we …

The Use Of Remote Monitoring For Internal Cardioverter Defibrillators (Icds): The Infusion Of Information Technology And Medicine, Susan Shirato, Msn, Rn, Ccrn

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The clinical use of automated implantable cardioverter defibrillators (AICDs) has been rapidly increasing since the results of several randomized trials confirmed the efficacy of AICDs in the secondary and primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. Patients with AICDs require high-quality care and intense follow-up to ensure safe and effective device performance. According to international guidelines these patients should be followed at 1- to 4 month intervals, depending on the device model and the patient’s clinical status (Schoenfeld, 2004). Given the expanding indications for use and the complexity of these devices, there is an urgent need to develop new means of …

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The need for evidence based teaching has become an important ideology for nurse educators who are frequently encouraged to expand their teaching strategies based on recent advances in technology and student learning styles. Traditional lecture is often preferred by students, yet the literature encourages case study methodology for the development of critical thinking. A pilot study was conducted comparing learning outcomes using two different teaching strategies: lecture and case study instruction. Recommendations for using case study as a teaching methodology are offered.

President Nixon’S Decision To Renounce The U.S. Offensive Biological Weapons Program, Jonathan B. Tucker, Erin R. Mahan

WMD Case Studies

The nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union was a prominent feature of the Cold War. A lesser known but equally dangerous element of the superpower competition involved biological weapons (BW), living microorganisms that cause fatal or incapacitating diseases in humans, animals, or plants. By the late 1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union had both acquired advanced BW capabilities. The U.S. biological weapons complex, operated by the U.S. Army Chemical Corps, consisted of a research and development laboratory at Fort Detrick in Maryland, an open-air testing site at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, and …

Burma In Strategic Perspective: Renewing Discussion Of Options, Lewis M. Stern, George Thomas, Julia A. Thompson

Strategic Forums

U.S. policy has sought to nudge the junta in Burma toward a more reasonable approach to its dilemma, either in the form of managing Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest in a semitransparent fashion, allowing the release of imprisoned prodemocracy activists and the National League for Democracy cadre, agreeing to visits from United Nations special representatives, or accepting regional advice and guidance at critical moments. But Burma is a minuet dramatizing the “one step forward, two steps backward” description of progress. Even as the administration of President Barack Obama commits itself in principle to reaching out to Burma, events conspire …

Wages Required For Self-Sufficiency In South Dakota, Kristi Corocran, Michael Mccurry Oct 2009

Wages Required For Self-Sufficiency In South Dakota, Kristi Corocran, Michael Mccurry

SDSU Extension Circulars

This publication discusses how much money a South Dakota breadwinner has to earn to be considered self-sufficient. The data presented is at the county level, reflecting the difference in cost of living among the state’s counties. The authors replicate the techniques developed by Diana Pearce in The Self-Sufficiency Standard for South Dakota (2000). Pearce described self-sufficiency as “earning adequate wages to provide for basic needs without additional support.” As Pearce’s publication has become dated and it seems unreasonable to wait for another regional study to update our local data, in respectfully updating her report, we stand on Dr. Pearce’s shoulders.

An Application Of The Bass Diffusion Model To Border Security And Illegal Immigration, Ayeh Ohene-Asah

Theses

This research's objective was to apply the Bass Diffusion model to border security and illegal immigration. The Potential Actual Illegal Immigration Population (PAIIP) model was created using the Vensim software program to illustrate and simulate illegal border crossings and assess the impact of detention, deportation, and amnesty on the communication between potential and actual illegal immigrants. This systems modeling approach combined with a secondary analysis method was used for data collection and analysis. Results indicate that no single or combination of policies solves the problem of illegal immigration. This study's conclusions point out that the greater the quality of information …

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report, Ilonka Zlatar, Cassidee Shinn

Reports (USI)

National and international organizations and programs like the United States Global Change Research Project and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change agree, and scientific evidence indicates, that anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are resulting in global climate change. Unless actions are taken to reverse and reduce the effects of these emissions, future generations will need to either adapt to or bear the burden of the changed environment. Individuals, companies, institutions, municipalities and countries are being called upon during this urgent world crisis. Universities, which support research and education, have a unique opportunity to become leaders in sustainability.

A Beneficiary As Trust Owner: Decoding Section 678, Jonathan G. Blattmachr, Mitchell M. Gans, Alvina H. Lo

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the circumstances under which a person who does not contribute property to a trust can be considered its "owner" for income tax purposes. The article focuses particularly on whether the a beneficiary's power to distribute trust property to himself or herself, subject to an "ascertainable standard," should be treated as the income tax owner of some portion of the trust property. The article then examines whether a holder of an unrestricted power of withdrawal that has lapsed may continue to be treated for income tax purposes as the owner of some portion of the trust property.

Investigation And Mitigation Of Driver Confusion At Modern Roundabouts, Aemal Khattak, Gregory Mcknight, Karen Schurr, Ram R. Bishu

Nebraska Department of Transportation: Research Reports

Construction of modern roundabouts in place of traditional four-legged intersections is becoming common in the United States. Roundabout negotiation can be confusing for drivers who are not familiar with their use. This research was carried out to identify roundabout elements that play a role in incorrect roundabout negotiation, ascertain driver characteristics prominent in incorrect roundabout negotiation, assess the relative potential for incorrect negotiation amongst different groups of drivers, and suggest measures for improving drivers’ abilities to negotiate roundabouts. Potential for incorrect roundabout negotiation was measured by asking questions in a survey questionnaire related to rules of roundabout negotiation and the …

Caring For The Country: Physician Retention At Cortland Regional Medical Center, Jennifer E. Truck Oct 2009

Caring For The Country: Physician Retention At Cortland Regional Medical Center, Jennifer E. Truck

MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015

Americans living in rural areas of the United States have historically suffered from a lack of adequate health care. As the focus of this study, the Cortland County area of central upstate New York State is a rural community of 74,000 that has been served for the last 118 years by Cortland Regional Medical Center (CRMC). CRMC is the federally designated "sole community hospital" which means that there are no other hospitals within 45 minutes of the medical center ("Department of Health and Human Services," 2009). Its HSPA designation indicates that on average, each primary care physician must allocate services …

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices For Risk Education: How To Implement Kap Surveys, Hi

Global CWD Repository

The KAP is a representative survey conducted on a particular population to identify the knowledge (K), attitudes (A) and practices (P) of a population on a specific topic – landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) in our case. In the majority of KAP studies, data are gathered orally by an interviewer who uses a structured, standardised questionnaire. These data can then be quantitatively or qualitatively analysed according to the objectives and the ins and outs of the survey. A KAP survey can be specially designed to collect information on the issue of, but it is also possible to include …
