Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder Jan 2008

Re-Islamization In Higher Education From Above And Below: The University Of South Florida And Its Global Contexts, Terri K. Wonder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study explores Islamism's interplay with higher education as the movement advances an agenda for worldwide reformation. Over an eighty-year period, Islamism has appropriated higher education institutions, professional associations, on- and off-campus organizations, and publications as a primary means to achieve its utopian objective of the Nizam Islami, or "Islamic Order." Findings show how the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt developed a Weberian bureaucratic organizational and administrative structure to exert influence not only in Egypt but also the world. A Qutb-inspired "hijra" of Muslim Brothers in universities proved itself adroit at filling macro-and micro-level policy vacuums in Soviet-aligned post-colonial societies, marginalizing …

Dealing With The Malicious Insider, Andy Jones, Carl Colwill Jan 2008

Dealing With The Malicious Insider, Andy Jones, Carl Colwill

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper looks at a number of issues relating to the malicious insider and the nature of motivation, loyalty and the type of attacks that occur. The paper also examines the changing environmental, social, cultural and business issues that have resulted in an increased exposure to the insider threat. The paper then discusses a range of measures that can be taken to reduce both the likelihood of an attack and the impact that such an attack may have. These measures should be driven by focused and effective risk management processes.

Organisational Security Requirements:An Agile Approach To Ubiquitous Information Security, A B. Ruighaver Jan 2008

Organisational Security Requirements:An Agile Approach To Ubiquitous Information Security, A B. Ruighaver

Australian Information Security Management Conference

This paper proposes to address the need for more innovation in organisational information security by adding a security requirement engineering focus. Based on the belief that any heavyweight security requirements process in organisational security will be doomed to fail, we developed a security requirement approach with three dimensions. The use of a simple security requirements process in the first dimension has been augmented by an agile security approach. However, introducing this second dimension of agile security does provide support for, but does not necessarily stimulate, innovation. A third dimension is, therefore, needed to ensure there is a proper focus in …

Enhanced Security For Preventing Man-In-The-Middle Attacks In Authentication, Dataentry And Transaction Verification, Jason Wells, Damien Hutchinson, Justin Pierce Jan 2008

Enhanced Security For Preventing Man-In-The-Middle Attacks In Authentication, Dataentry And Transaction Verification, Jason Wells, Damien Hutchinson, Justin Pierce

Australian Information Security Management Conference

There is increasing coverage in the literature highlighting threats to online financial systems. Attacks range from the prevalent reverse social engineering technique known as phishing; where spam emails are sent to customers with links to fake websites, to Trojans that monitor a customer’s account log on process that captures authentication details that are later replayed for financial gain. This ultimately results in loss of monetary funds for affected victims. As technological advances continue to influence the way society makes payment for goods and services, the requirement for more advanced security approaches for transaction verification in the online environment increases. This …

Securing A Wireless Network With Eap-Tls: Perception And Realities Of Its Implementation, Brett Turner, Andrew Woodward Jan 2008

Securing A Wireless Network With Eap-Tls: Perception And Realities Of Its Implementation, Brett Turner, Andrew Woodward

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In the arena of wireless security, EAP-TLS is considered one of the most secure protocols. However since its inception the uptake has been poor and the investigation into the reasons for this are sparse. There is an industry perception that EAP-TLS is complex as well as difficult to configure and manage. One of the major barriers is in the use of public key infrastructure and the perceived difficulties in its application. The paper discusses why it is seemingly difficult to implement and how this may differ from the reality of its implementation. This premise is investigated using Windows Server 2003 …

Dead Reckoning (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers Jan 2008

Dead Reckoning (Book Review), Edward L. Ayers

History Faculty Publications

Long before she became the first female president of Harvard University in July 2007, Drew Gilpin Faust showed herself to be an inventive, energetic, and restless historian. Her first book, in 1977, focused on a subject many people had doubted was a subject, "the intellectual in the Old South." Five years later, she produced what is still the fullest — and most disturbing — portrayal of a white Southern planter, a man who sought complete mastery over the white women in his charge as well as over the enslaved people he claimed as property.

Soon after that, in a series …

Hardware/Software Codesign In A Compact Ion Mobility Spectrometer Sensor Systemfor Subsurface Contaminant Detection, Sin Ming Loo, Jonathan P. Cole, Molly M. Gribb Jan 2008

Hardware/Software Codesign In A Compact Ion Mobility Spectrometer Sensor Systemfor Subsurface Contaminant Detection, Sin Ming Loo, Jonathan P. Cole, Molly M. Gribb

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A field-programmable-gate-array-(FPGA-) based data acquisition and control system was designed in a hardware/software codesign environment using an embedded Xilinx Microblaze soft-core processor for use with a subsurface ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) system, designed for detection of gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). An FPGA is used to accelerate the digital signal processing algorithms and provide accurate timing and control. An embedded soft-core processor is used to ease development by implementing nontime critical portions of the design in software. The design was successfully implemented using a low-cost, off-the-shelf Xilinx Spartan-III FPGA and supporting digital and analog electronics.

Professional Military Firms Under International Law, Richard Morgan Jan 2008

Professional Military Firms Under International Law, Richard Morgan

Chicago Journal of International Law

On July 18, 2006, four employees of Triple Canopy, an American security- provision contract firm, embarked on the dangerous convoy route in downtown Baghdad colloquially known as "Route Irish." Their assignment was to escort an employee of the military-service provision firm KBR, Inc. from the Baghdad International Airport to the relative security of the Green Zone. According to statements made by three of the Triple Canopy employees, during the trip to the airport, the fourth contractor, who had previously commented that he "wanted to kill someone today," opened fire on a presumably civilian truck that was approaching the contractor's convoy …

State-Building In A Post-Colonial Society: The Case Of Solomon Islands, Sinclair Dinnen Jan 2008

State-Building In A Post-Colonial Society: The Case Of Solomon Islands, Sinclair Dinnen

Chicago Journal of International Law

Despite growing levels of conflict and instability in parts of the southwest Pacific, Australia has, until recently, been reluctant to intervene in the affairs of neighboring states. As the dominant metropolitan power in the region, a former colony of Britain, and the ex-colonial administrator of Papua New Guinea, Australia has gone out of its way to avoid any perceptions of acting in an imperialist or neo-colonial fashion. Instead, its influence has been wielded primarily through diplomacy and bilateral development assistance. This traditional reluctance to intervene was also justified in terms of the practical limitations of external intervention, given the cultural …

Cyberwar And Customary International Law: The Potential Of A "Bottom-Up" Approach To An International Law Of Information Operations, Jon P. Jurich Jan 2008

Cyberwar And Customary International Law: The Potential Of A "Bottom-Up" Approach To An International Law Of Information Operations, Jon P. Jurich

Chicago Journal of International Law

Section II of this Development explores the various definitions of cyberwar, information operations, information warfare, and cybercrime. This exploration attempts to create a stable ground that accounts for widening dependence on network technologies, the challenges in separating their military and nonmilitary uses, and the threats and opportunities which result from their use. Section III examines how current law governs the use of these technologies and identifies the areas in which existing law struggles to meet the challenges of the emerging technologies and their users. Section IV analyzes the realist perspective of customary international law and its reflections in developing international …

An Analytical Understanding Of Administrative Practices Minimizing Vicarious Traumatization In Domestic Violence Organizations I, Katharine Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Working within the field of domestic violence can result in the occurrence of vicarious traumatization. The literature supports that collegial support and supervision are effective tools organizations can implement to assist in minimizing vicarious trauma. This study, guided by constructive self development theory and feminist theory, examines whether the level of vicarious trauma is impacted by knowledge base, collegial support, and supervision. Staff within certified shelters in the state of Florida were surveyed using a research designed instrument and the Trauma and Attachment Belief Scale. A total of 112 participants were recruited using the Tailor Design Method of surveying. Findings …

Military Leader Development And Autonomous Learning: Responding To The Growing Complexity Of Warfare, Kirk G. Mensch, Tim Rahschulte Jan 2008

Military Leader Development And Autonomous Learning: Responding To The Growing Complexity Of Warfare, Kirk G. Mensch, Tim Rahschulte

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The complexity in today’s operational military environment and the responsibility of leadership in this environment has exponentially increased over the past century. This trend will continue as global economies, political structures, and technologies continue to evolve. Learner autonomy is recognized as a paramount concern in leadership programs, including military programs. The purpose of this article is to increase awareness of the need for learner autonomy among military leaders; however, the implications may be generalizable to any organization responsible for developing leaders who operate in ambiguous and complex environments.

A Trickster’S Oaths In The Homeric Hymn To Hermes, Judith Fletcher Jan 2008

A Trickster’S Oaths In The Homeric Hymn To Hermes, Judith Fletcher

Ancient Studies Faculty Publications

Hermes’ maturation into a god of commerce and diplomacy is punctuated by a series of oaths. At first he uses tricky or unsworn oaths in the investigation of his theftof Apollo’s cattle, but eventually he and Apollo exchange oaths that evoke the protocols of ritualized friendship. Although the ceremony suggests that Hermes has achieved adulthood, a narrative sleight of hand leaves some ambiguity about the completion of the ritual.

Aggressive And Passive Propaganda: Cuba And The United States, Eugene Humberto Pons Jan 2008

Aggressive And Passive Propaganda: Cuba And The United States, Eugene Humberto Pons

Open Access Theses

The proposed thesis intends at quantitatively measuring the Cuba anti-American propaganda associated with the effects of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America. We propose to analyze the Cuban government run international newspaper service, Granma Internacional, to determine if the amount of aggressive propaganda changed as a result of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The question answered is: Did the amount of anti-American propaganda decrease, increase, or remain relatively the same in Cuba?s international newspaper during a time span of one year after the terrorist attack compared to one year before the terrorist attack. In …
