Another Forgotten Army: The French Expeditionary Corps In Italy,1943-1944, Brook White Jan 2008

Another Forgotten Army: The French Expeditionary Corps In Italy,1943-1944, Brook White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The French Expeditionary Corps that fought in Italy during World War II was a French army, but that description must be qualified. Therefore this thesis asks two questions: how did France manage to send the equivalent of an army to Italy if French military leadership in 1943 had no direct access to French manpower resources; and the most important question since it is unique to the historical debate, why were the troops that were sent to Italy so effective once there when compared to the 1940 French army? To answer the first question, it was a French colonial army - …

Consumer Theology: Its Causes, Effects, And Solution, R. Douglas Bailey Jan 2008

Consumer Theology: Its Causes, Effects, And Solution, R. Douglas Bailey

Doctor of Ministry

This paper claims that consumerism has permeated our culture so completely as to affect the church as well, creating a consumer theology. The thesis of this paper is that spiritual formation, properly understood and implemented in an established church, is the corrective for the harmful effects of consumer theology. Chapter 1 traces the rise of consumerism in America, noting its harmful effects on society. This chapter also introduces consumer theology, claiming that it is characterized by a commodification of the Holy; churches' becoming vendors of religious goods and services; a radical individualism; and a sense of entitlement among congregants. Hiding Out: Creative Resistance Among Anonymous Workbloggers, Abigail Schoneboom Jan 2008

Hiding Out: Creative Resistance Among Anonymous Workbloggers, Abigail Schoneboom

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Anonymous workbloggers—employees who write online diaries about their work—are often simultaneously productive workers and savage critics of the corporate cultures in which they toil. Writing under an assumed identity, these workers create satirical portraits of their supervisors and colleagues, rail against management gurus and corporate buzzwords, celebrate time-wasting capers, and daydream about quitting. Their irreverent and fictionalized accounts of work, which are shielded from the gaze of co-workers and supervisors, reveal how office workers critically negotiate a labor process that, increasingly, demands their hearts and minds.

This study, which comprises an overview of media and organizational responses to the phenomenon, …

Family Responsibilities Discrimination And The New Institutionalism: The Interactive Process Through Which Legal And Social Factors Produce Institutional Change, Marcy C. Still Jan 2008

Family Responsibilities Discrimination And The New Institutionalism: The Interactive Process Through Which Legal And Social Factors Produce Institutional Change, Marcy C. Still

UC Law Journal

The recent formal adoption of both the logic and language of legal and work/family activists by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) legitimized the issue of workplace discrimination against employees with family caregiving responsibilities and conferred credibility crucial for triggering social change. In this Article, the Author examines the social and legal process leading to such an important action on the part of the U.S. government by identifying key change agents involved: legal intellectuals, the media, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, work/life activists, and hybrid political organizations. The Author then draws from new institutionalist theory to consider whether substantive …

The Additive Value Of Positive Psychological Capital In Predicting Work Attitudes And Behaviors, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Carolyn M. Youssef Jan 2008

The Additive Value Of Positive Psychological Capital In Predicting Work Attitudes And Behaviors, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Carolyn M. Youssef

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom over the years and recent research findings have supported the importance of positivity in the workplace. However, to date, empirical analysis has not demonstrated potential added value of recently emerging positive state-like constructs such as psychological capital over the more established positive traits in predicting work attitudes and behaviors. This study of a sample of employees (N=336) from a broad cross section of organizations and jobs found that their state-like psychological capital is positively related to desired extra-role organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and negatively with undesired organizational cynicism, intentions to quit and counterproductive workplace behaviors. Except for individual …

The model highlights mechanisms of cultural change and stability, and provides a versatile framework for understanding culture on multiple levels.

A Scale-Free Theory Of Emergence: Four Sequences Of Emergence Within, Of, And Across Organizations, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein Jan 2008

A Scale-Free Theory Of Emergence: Four Sequences Of Emergence Within, Of, And Across Organizations, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein

College of Management Working Papers and Reports

Emergence – the “coming into being” of new processes, structures and entities – is a consequential phenomenon that management scholars have been exploring since Babbage (1832) described the emergence of a division of labor, and Weber (1947) explained the emergence of bureaucratic hierarchy. Emergence is important and unique not only because it occurs at multiple levels within and across organizations, but also because emergence is the process that creates new “levels” of organizing (McKelvey & Lichtenstein, 2007).

A Strategy To Strengthen The Role And Function Of The District Pastor For Effective Leadership And Guidance Of Local Churches In Ghana, Paul Adu Sampah Jan 2008

A Strategy To Strengthen The Role And Function Of The District Pastor For Effective Leadership And Guidance Of Local Churches In Ghana, Paul Adu Sampah

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Ever since the General Conference introduced Union and Conferences to run local churches, progress of the gospel work in Ghana has been slow. Before their introduction, churches were grouped into districts and run by district pastors. Due to their high administrative expenditure, local churches have become poor with no proper pastoral care. When church administration is given back to the districts and district pastor’s role is strengthened, conference expenditure will be reduced, more pastors will be sent to the churches, and local churches will be saved from financial collapse.

Method

Studies were carried out by reviewing current literature on …

Entrepreneurial Organizational Characteristics In Hawaiian Elementary Schools: Its Relationship To School Characteristics And Student Achievement, J. Patrick Byrne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To determine the level of entrepreneurial organizational characteristics in Hawaiian public elementary schools, 3,816 teachers in 111 schools were surveyed using the Public School Entrepreneurial Inventory (PSEI). This survey was developed and used previously in Israel. This was the first application of the PSEI in the United States. Two domains of entrepreneurial organizational characteristics were measured: principal proactiveness and school innovativeness. Based on the levels of entrepreneurial characteristics, schools were grouped into four entrepreneurial profiles. A chi square goodness of fit was used to determine the variation in entrepreneurial profiles between the regions of Israel and Hawaii. Based on the …

Framing Strategies Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Advocacy Organizations: The Case Of Let California Ring's 'Garden Wedding' Commercial, Helena Mica

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Framing is the process of presenting a complicated argument by relying on the ideas and concepts that a person already has regarding a basic subject. The idea of same-sex marriage has traditionally been presented by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) advocacy organizations using a frame of equal rights, with same-sex couples seeking equal treatment under the law. However, due to a lack of support for this argument, the organization Let California Ring introduced the 'Garden Wedding' commercial in the fall of 2007 that presented same-sex marriage in a new, emotional frame. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the …

Essays In Outsourced Is Program Management, Neeraj Parolia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

IS vendor organizations are increasingly using program management practices to manage complex projects (Gierra 2004). The move to program teams is due to the realization that the management of many client projects and their underlying dependencies requires teamwork among project managers from different projects (Cooke-Davies 2002; Ferratt et al. 2006; Sanghera 2007). With two separate studies, first we extend the team competence framework and utilize organizational learning theory to understand the antecedents and outcomes of teamwork behaviors. Empirical results from the first study indicated that teamwork behaviors within the program team were significantly related to an increase in team competencies …

A Meta Analysis Of Critical Success Factors For Computer Technology Projects, Ross A. Baker Jan 2008

A Meta Analysis Of Critical Success Factors For Computer Technology Projects, Ross A. Baker

Theses

Project managers are continually in pursuit of a magic formula that will deliver a successful project. Companies arc interested in formulas for project success because billions of dollars arc wasted each year, in U.S.A. Information Technology projects alone. through poorly managed or failed projects. Failing projects arc not only bad for the individual project team members, but a failed project's impacts emanate outward to cause companies to decline or die. In addition, the targeted customers who receive inferior products, late products, or no products at all (due to project failures) are significantly impacted as well. Because failed computer technology projects …

Co-Creating A Change-Adept Organizational Culture, Janet Mccollum Jan 2008

Co-Creating A Change-Adept Organizational Culture, Janet Mccollum

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations are experiencing accelerated rates of change while at the same time organizational change initiatives are experiencing high rates of failure. If organizations are to be successful now and in the future, they must develop the capacity to become change-adept while maintaining business performance. This retrospective case study explores how an emergent change process influenced an organization's movement toward a change-adept culture while continuing to perform its normal operations. Using a mixed method approach, the researcher analyzed artifact qualitative data by applying Kanter's 3 dimensions of a change-adept culture--professionalism to perform, imagination to innovate, and openness to collaborate. A Grounded Theory Study Of The Leadership Characteristics Of John F. Kennedy: A Leadership Model For Educational Leaders, Kanika D. Colvin-White

Theses and Dissertations

Adverse challenges in schools that distract from student learning have necessitated effective leadership more than ever before. These challenges include, but are not limited to, budget cuts, standardized testing, poorly trained teachers, poverty, and low parent participation. Every school year academic administrators approach the aforementioned challenges with the hope of improving student achievement. However, without effective practices to foster and sustain student achievement, often, their efforts are in vain. As school districts recruit and deploy leaders, it is critical to select those who have passion to foster positive change. It is equally important to hire administrators who possess those characteristics …

Measuring Community-Engaged Departments: A Study To Develop An Effective Self-Assessment Rubric For The Institutionalization Of Community Engagement In Academic Departments, Kevin Kecskes

Dissertations and Theses

Change in American higher education is occurring at a rapid pace. The increasing reemergence of civic or community engagement as a key component in the overall landscape of American higher is emblematic of that change. Academic departments play a critical role in higher education change, including institutionalizing community engagement on campuses. Yet, designing a way of measuring community engagement specifically at the level of the academic department has not been undertaken.

Based on advice from national expert/key informant interviews and the recognition of the importance of the role of academic departments in the overall institutionalization of community engagement in higher …
