Money For Nothing, Your Crisis For Free?: A Comparative Analysis Of Consumer Credit Policies For Post-1997 South Korea And Thailand, Jasper Kim, Kemavit Bhangananda

Washington International Law Journal

Both the South Korean and Thai governments encouraged consumer credit card usage to boost consumer spending and reinvigorate the national economy following the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. Today, almost a decade following the crisis, the authors provide a comparative analysis of how policymakers in both South Korea and Thailand have attempted to regulate the rapid upsurge in consumer credit card debt in their respective economies. This Article also notes some of the benefits and risks of the approaches taken by the South Korean and Thai governments, using as focal points the South Korean government’s Individual Debtor Rehabilitation Act, a personal …

Global Law Firms: Globalization And Organizational Spaces Of Cross-Border Legal Work, James R. Faulconbridge, Jonathan V. Beaverstock, Daniel Muzio, Peter J. Taylor

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The aim of this paper is not, however, to generically chart the rise of the global law firm; others have already done this. Instead, our interest lies in better understanding how existing geographies of globalization of law and lawyers, alongside the new geographies of professional partnership and legal work, have created opportunities and challenges for global law firms. More specifically, we seek to unravel the complexities of: (a) the factors driving the presence and absence of global law firms in different cities; and (b) the way that law firms have been reconfigured to operate as spatially distributed organizations present in …

Hospital Administrators' Perceptions Regarding Their Role In Quality Improvement, Benjamin F. Brown Jan 2008

Hospital Administrators' Perceptions Regarding Their Role In Quality Improvement, Benjamin F. Brown

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

As the formal leaders of their organizations, hospital administrators play a major role in ensuring that their hospitals meet the challenge of continually improving the care that is provided within their organizations. While the literature identifies some of the things that these leaders should be doing to lead their organizations toward providing exemplary care, the literature is lacking with regard to the specifics of how those who are successful are actually able to do so. This study sought to fill this gap in the literature through a qualitative examination of hospital administrators' perceptions of their roles in Q I. The …

Creativity In The Printing Industry: The Context Of Organizational Change, Shalini Khazanchi, Holly Slay, Mathew Sheep

Books

The printing industry is undergoing numerous changes. The advancement of digital technologies has profoundly impacted the ways in which information is conveyed to consumers and has given people the ability to produce documents on their own, thereby limiting reliance on traditional print companies. As an example of this phenomenon, Freeman and Rothenberg (2006) report on decreasing demand for traditional print products, citing statistics from the Newspaper Association of America that mark a decrease in newsprint consumption of 14%.

Value Mapping Framework Involving Stakeholders For Supply Chain Improvement When Implementing Information Technology Projects, Karla Moore Jan 2008

Value Mapping Framework Involving Stakeholders For Supply Chain Improvement When Implementing Information Technology Projects, Karla Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Successful Supply Chain Management (SCM) depends on how well an organization performs internal and external communications with trading partners, executes the logistics component, and understands/monitors related costs of conducting its business. The use of information technology (IT) is considered a prerequisite for the effective control of today's complex supply chains. Increased communication technology has redefined how businesses work together, raised customer expectations, and placed new demands on supply chain performance. IT components with proven and rapid return-on-investment are favored to support critical supply chain processes such as leaner manufacturing processes, consumer-driven supply chains, and customer responsiveness. The use of IT …

Deriving A Taxonomy Of Its Transition Costs, Zhi Tang, Delmonize Smith, Joanne Hale Jan 2008

Deriving A Taxonomy Of Its Transition Costs, Zhi Tang, Delmonize Smith, Joanne Hale

Articles

Those charged with implementing information technology often face the daunting task of assessing the total organizational costs of such initiatives. Our study posits evaluating such expenditures as IT transition costs - organizational resource expenditures stemming from a positive IT investment decision. A content analytic review of academic, IT-related articles yielded 57 cases germane to the construct. Data produced a meaningful and comprehensive taxonomy that distinguished IT transition costs by two dimensions: goal (prescriptive, evaluative, adaptive, corrective) and target (human, structure, process, technology). The significance of the taxonomy as a useful guide to both practitioners and future research is discussed.

Understanding Church Size Based On Empirical Data, Bill M. Sullivan Jan 2008

Understanding Church Size Based On Empirical Data, Bill M. Sullivan

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

One of the most remarkable graphs I have ever seen was developed by ANSR’s own Rich Houseal. While he was serving as president of ASARB he was able to acquire, from five other denominational statisticians, the church attendance data for their respective churches. Attendance data has only been collected in recent years and has not been readily available. Of course, actual report data is more desirable than survey data. It may not be 100% accurate but it is generally consistent and reliable. Most denominations have standard reporting procedures which over time have produced an acceptable level of reliability.

Co-Teaching As A Faculty Development Model, Andrea L. Beach, Charles Henderson, Michael Famiano Jan 2008

Co-Teaching As A Faculty Development Model, Andrea L. Beach, Charles Henderson, Michael Famiano

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Co-teaching is a promising and cost-effective approach to promoting fundamental research-based instructional change. In this chapter, we discuss the theoretical underpinnings of co-teaching and describe our initial experience with it. A new instructor (MF) co-taught with an instructor experienced in physics education research-based reforms (CH). An outsider (AB) conducted separate interviews with each instructor and observed several class sessions. Results include immediate use of research-based instructional practices by the new instructor and a significant change in teaching beliefs over time. Recommendations are made for implementing co-teaching as part of a faculty development program.

Lessons From India In Organizational Innovation: A Tale Of Two Heart Hospitals, Barak D. Richman, Krishna Udayakumar, Will Mitchell, Kevin A. Schulman Jan 2008

Lessons From India In Organizational Innovation: A Tale Of Two Heart Hospitals, Barak D. Richman, Krishna Udayakumar, Will Mitchell, Kevin A. Schulman

Faculty Scholarship

Recent discussions in health reform circles have pinned great hopes on the prospect of innovation as the solution to the high-cost, inadequate-quality U.S. health system. But U.S. health care institutions--insurers, providers and specialists--have ceded leadership in innovation to Indian hospitals such as Care Hospital in Hyderabad and the Fortis Hospitals around New Delhi, which have U.S.-trained doctors and can perform open heart surgery for $6000 (compared to $100,000 in the United States). The Indian success is a window into America's stalemate with inflating costs and stagnant innovation.

User Reactions To Information Technology: Evidence From The Healthcare Sector., Anol Bhattacherjee, Christopher Davis, Neset Hikmet, Varol O. Kayhan

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

This paper examines the diverse nature of user reactions to information technology (IT) within the social-historical context of its organizational use. Employing activity theory as a conceptual framework, we conduct an interpretive analysis of physicians work, perceptions, and IT usage experience at a large community hospital to understand why some of these physicians were favorably disposed toward IT use while others were not. This study complements prior positivistic analyses of IT usage that explain similarities in usage patterns within a user population, by using an interpretive lens to explain differences in usage patterns. Further, we contribute methodologically to the literature …

Women's Health Transnational Networks, Corradi, Giovanna Vingelli Jan 2008

Women's Health Transnational Networks, Corradi, Giovanna Vingelli

Societies Without Borders

The emergence and diffusion of global networks working around health issues with a gender perspective (gender & health organizations) is a relatively new phenomenon characterizing the last three decades with growing interest in gender studies, sociology of health and sociology of social movements. A transnational dimension seems to be more fit to negotiate women's different conditions and interests - compared to traditional ones, whose actions remain limited to national arenas. We carried out exploratory research of about 284 international health-related organizations. Here we are going to present the results of a quantitative survey of 48 of them, dealing specifically on …

Teaching Basic Counseling Skills To Aspiring School Leaders: Active Listening Skills As Critical Components Of Team Building And Collaboration, Paul T. Hackett, L. Christopher Ross, Irene Asuncion Jan 2008

Teaching Basic Counseling Skills To Aspiring School Leaders: Active Listening Skills As Critical Components Of Team Building And Collaboration, Paul T. Hackett, L. Christopher Ross, Irene Asuncion

Perspectives In Learning

The preparation of school leaders in educational leadership programs provides multiple challenges in terms of a set course of study with discrete skills for the leader. Programs in educational leadership have been criticized for curricular disarray (Levine, 2005). Deficiencies cited by an American Enterprise Institute study of 31 educational leadership programs found that a small percentage of instruction in those programs focused on issues such as data analysis, public relations, marketing, and parent and school board relations (Hess & Kelly, 2005). A Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) study of educational leadership programs found that the majority of universities “fall short …

Extending Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Through Postpartum Family Planning In Lesotho, Charlotte E. Warren, Semakaleng Phafoli, Bosielo Majara, Thato Tsukuluet

Reproductive Health

Recognizing the need to improve the care and follow up of mothers and infants in the postpartum period, the Lesotho Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW), with technical support from the Frontiers in Reproductive Health (FRONTIERS) of Population Council and funding from PEPFAR/RHAP/USAID, carried out an operations research project to strengthen the existing postpartum care services. This study had a specific focus on strengthening linkages with existing PMTCT follow-up and family planning services during the postpartum period by changing the number, timing, and content of postpartum consultations that a woman and her newborn should receive. The key findings indicated …
