Dissatisfaction Theory And Superintendent Turnover: An Exception To The Rule, Richard Perry
Dissatisfaction Theory And Superintendent Turnover: An Exception To The Rule, Richard Perry
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The cycle of change and superintendent replacement in a public school district was documented and later named Dissatisfaction Theory by Iannaccone and Lutz (1970). Since then there have been multiple studies that have further documented failed relationships between the values of the community, the school board, and the superintendent. The research has demonstrated that dissatisfied voters replace school board members who in turn replace the superintendent with someone who will reflect the ideology and policies desired by the community.
The purposes of this study were to a) Better understand the dynamics of the position of superintendent, b) Inform superintendents, school …
Balancing Hamiltonian And Jeffersonian Contradictions Within Organizations, Anil Nair, David Ahlstrom
Balancing Hamiltonian And Jeffersonian Contradictions Within Organizations, Anil Nair, David Ahlstrom
Management Faculty Publications
This article describes how institutions get infused with competing logics and analyzes how such competing logics might aid the design of contemporary organizations. It does so by exploring the contrasting views of American founders Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson on the issues they confronted in the years leading up to and after the United States' independence from the British. Their views have had a lasting influence on the character and efficacy of the U.S. government. Although Hamilton and Jefferson contemplated issues related to the governance of the United States, the authors argue that their writings offer insights that can be …

Power Relationships In Information Systems Security Policy Formulation And Implementation, Michael Stephen Lapke
Power Relationships In Information Systems Security Policy Formulation And Implementation, Michael Stephen Lapke
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that organizational power impacts the development and implementation of Information Systems (IS) Security policy. The motivation for this research stems from the continuing concern of ineffective security in organizations, leading to significant monetary losses. IS researchers have contended that ineffective IS Security policy is a precursor to ineffective IS Security (Loch et al. 1992; Whitman et al. 2001; David 2002; Solms and Solms 2004). Beyond this pragmatic aspect, there is a gap in the literature concerning power relationships and IS Security policy. This research intends to bridge the gap. The dissertation is a two phased study whereby …
How Do Defense Companies Understand And Measure Human Capital, Alexander Eksir
How Do Defense Companies Understand And Measure Human Capital, Alexander Eksir
Student Scholarship
How do we reliably sustain performance of the US defense assets over their expected life cycles in an industry where the legacy skills of employees at an average age of 49 will soon be lost to attrition? While the defense industry has illustrated reliable results in the past, we now must pay serious attention to the Human Capital if we are to continue to sustain performance. This study examines the ways that HC is understood and monitored by upper echelon who work in high-tech defense companies, government as well as individuals in academia who are familiar with the defense industry.
A Model For Managing Civil Construction Company Systems, Carlos Alberto Pereira Soares, Christine Kowal Chinelli
A Model For Managing Civil Construction Company Systems, Carlos Alberto Pereira Soares, Christine Kowal Chinelli
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
At the beginning of the 20th century, organizations in a globalized and highly competitive environment face two options—either they stagnate by keeping their traditional old fashioned procedures, or they make the decision to look forward and change their current procedure, as they attempt to survive competition and become new competitive organizations that can play a more active role in the future market. Organizational changes are naturally linked to risks, and risks mean opportunities, as well as losses. However, as companies try to modify their procedures and adapt their staff and routine to some novelty, they have a good chance to …

We introduce management and spirituality scholars to the “knack” passages from the c. 4th century B.C.E. text, the Zhuangzi. The knack passages are parables about low status figures, such as wheelwrights, furniture makers and cooks, whose actions offer insights into the spirituality of ordinary work and, we argue, of entrepreneurship. Such non-corporate settings are lesser-studied domains for spirituality. Ancient Chinese writings have been noticed by spirituality and management writers but we call for deeper scholarly textual attention. We seek also to model more attention to the renaissance in scholarship on classical China. More ambitiously, we hope to show that these …
Ict Perceptions And Meanings: Implications For Knowledge Transfer, Anne P. Massey, Taylor M. Wells
Ict Perceptions And Meanings: Implications For Knowledge Transfer, Anne P. Massey, Taylor M. Wells
Faculty Publications
Driven by global competition and economic pressures, organizations are increasingly interested in transferring and leveraging local expertise at the global level. While many of the challenges of knowledge transfer (KT) have been discussed in the literature (e.g., incentives, cognitive limitations), the challenge of KT in distributed, or “virtual”, settings and the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) have received limited attention. While any given ICT may be described in terms of one’s perceptual awareness of its capabilities (e.g., richness, interactivity), it may also be described relative to the meanings an individual attaches to it, i.e., the idea of it …
The Ethical Lacunae In Friedman's Concept Of The Manager, Jonathan B. Wight, Martin Calkins
The Ethical Lacunae In Friedman's Concept Of The Manager, Jonathan B. Wight, Martin Calkins
Economics Faculty Publications
This article challenges along two lines Milton Friedman's injunction that the sole role of the business manager is to maximize profits for shareholders using all legal and ethical means. First, it shows how Friedman overly narrows the manager's moral duties to consequentialist profit maximization and thereby fails to account for a wide range of values and virtues necessary for good management. Second, it illustrates how more oblique approaches to management as well as Adam Smith's virtue-based model better capture the moral imagination and relational aspects of leadership that are critical to good management today. In the end, this article suggests …

Organizational Imprinting: Informing Firm Behavior In Domestic And International Contexts, Aldas Kriauciunas, George Shinkle
Organizational Imprinting: Informing Firm Behavior In Domestic And International Contexts, Aldas Kriauciunas, George Shinkle
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
We argue that organizational imprinting theory provides an important causal mechanism and originating source for numerous behaviors which are applicable to several research literatures. We briefly explain the imprinting process, how the imprinting process can be informed by other theories, and how imprinting may be better utilized than some frameworks such as inertia or social embeddedness to understand the initiation of firm behavior. We follow with examples from organizational behavior, organizational change and learning, entrepreneurship, and mergers & acquisitions where imprinting theory could be used to explain observed behaviors along with potential avenues and ideas for future research in these …

Determinants Of Export Growth In Transition Economy Firms: Instituions, Aspirations, Incentives, And Inertia, George Shinkle, Aldas Kriauciunas
Purdue CIBER Working Papers
Exports are an important source of revenue, especially in transitional economies. To better understand export growth, we examine the influence of institutional development, managerial aspirations, private ownership, firm size, and age with a sample of Central and East European firms. We find that institutions affect export growth through their interaction with firm size and age, though in opposite ways. Also, while the impact of private ownership is conditional on the level of institutional development, managerial aspirations support export growth across all institutional environments examined. These results indicate the importance of institutions and their limits when behavioral factors are considered.
A Study Of Innovation In Collegiate Business Education, Clair Don St.
A Study Of Innovation In Collegiate Business Education, Clair Don St.
Theses and Dissertations
Innovation and the creation of innovative organizations have become increasingly important in virtually every professional endeavor. The pressure to create new products and services, new business processes, and new approaches to solving old problems is immense. This study explores the dynamics of innovation in accredited schools of business, focusing upon sources of innovation, systems to support innovation, and obstacles to innovation. For the purposes of the study, innovation was defined in the broadest term. The concept of business concept innovation, innovation in any phase of a business model, serves as the foundation for defining innovation. Relatively little study has been …

Implementation Of Simulation For Network Service Delivery Point Capacity Analysis, Tiffany Jill Harper
Implementation Of Simulation For Network Service Delivery Point Capacity Analysis, Tiffany Jill Harper
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
As businesses consolidate and modernize their operations, the impact on their network and computing infrastructure is a major consideration. In this thesis, discrete event simulation is used to show how implementation of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system can impact network performance and ultimately affect end-users. More specifically, the model simulates the flow of data packets across a network, through a Service Delivery Point (SDP), which is comprised of routers, switches, and firewalls that connect a Local Area Network to a Wide Area Network.
The model was used to run to determine the affect of more network traffic and additional …

Effects Of Subcutaneous Postnatal Choline Supplementation On Hippocampus-Mediated Learning And Memory In Rat Pups, Jeremy Alan Moore
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The effects of postnatal injections of choline on the acquisition of two variants of eyeblink conditioning were examined in developing Long-Evans rat pups. Choline administration on postnatal days (PND) 15-27 was followed by evaluation of trace eyeblink conditioning (Experiment 1) and delay eyeblink conditioning (Experiment 2) on PND 28-29. The results of these experiments show that choline produced greater improvements in learning and memory during the trace condition than in the delay condition, presumably due to its effect on the hippocampus. Trace eyeblink conditioning relies heavily on an intact hippocampus but delay eyeblink conditioning does not, and it is understood …

Environmental Context, Managerial Cognition, And Strategic Action: An Integrated View, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pamela S. Barr
Environmental Context, Managerial Cognition, And Strategic Action: An Integrated View, Sucheta Nadkarni, Pamela S. Barr
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
This study addresses an apparent disconnect between two views of strategic action: the “economic view,” which contends that industry structure is the primary influence on strategic action, and the “cognitive view,” which suggests that managerial cognition drives strategic action. We argue that this disconnect has created artificial boundaries between the two perspectives and has limited our ability to develop holistic explanations of strategic action. In response, we develop an integrated model that answers two questions: 1) Does industry context affect managerial cognition? 2) Does managerial cognition mediate the relationship between industry context and strategic responses to environmental changes? To examine …
The Utility Of Transactional And Transformational Leadership For Predicting Performance And Satisfaction Within A Path-Goal Theory Framework, Robert P. Vecchio, Joseph E. Justin, Craig L. Pearce
The Utility Of Transactional And Transformational Leadership For Predicting Performance And Satisfaction Within A Path-Goal Theory Framework, Robert P. Vecchio, Joseph E. Justin, Craig L. Pearce
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
In a test of hypotheses derived from the integration of principles of path-goal theory (House, 1996) and transformational leadership theory (Bass, 1985), data collected from 179 high school teachers and their principals were examined with hierarchical regression analysis. Augmentation analysis indicated that transactional leadership had a stronger role in explaining unique criterion variance beyond the contribution of transformational leadership, than did transformational leadership relative to transactional leadership. In addition, both the transactional and transformational leadership had a negative interactive relationship for predicting the outcome of performance, such that leader vision and leader intellectual stimulation were more positively correlated with employee …
Expanding Group Support System Capabilities From The Knowledge Management Perspective, Shin-Yuan Hung, King-Zoo Tang, Tsan-Chuan Shu
Expanding Group Support System Capabilities From The Knowledge Management Perspective, Shin-Yuan Hung, King-Zoo Tang, Tsan-Chuan Shu
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
A group support system (GSS) is a computer-based system that enables people in different places to discuss and make decisions on connected computers. Expanding GSS capabilities from the knowledge management perspective is believed to significantly improve the performance and satisfaction of group meetings. This study develops the organizational knowledge management process, proposed by Alavi and Leidner (2001), to expand the capabilities of a GSS. Additionally, a prototype system has been implemented. Finally, an experiment is conducted to evaluate the system and demonstrate its applicability and usability. Experimental results indicate that users perceive a web-based GSS with knowledge management capabilities to …

Information Relevance And Availability: Toward Effective Management Of Projects In Public Sector, Carlos F. Gomes, Mahmoud M. Yasin
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Information plays a critical role in the different stages of managing a project. This study examines the views of one hundred and two (102) Portuguese Public sector officials on the relevance, availability and sharability of information as practiced in their organizations. Cluster analysis, gap analysis and confirmatory factor analysis procedures are utilized to analyze the collected data. The results of this study tend to underscore the growing need to have well- designed information systems, which are capable of enhancing the availability and promoting the sharability of relevant information.
Strategies, Contributions And Inhibitors Of Information Systems To Organizational Competitiveness: An Empirical Analysis Within The Caribbean, Stephen Louis, Ashley Braganza, Ray Hackney
Strategies, Contributions And Inhibitors Of Information Systems To Organizational Competitiveness: An Empirical Analysis Within The Caribbean, Stephen Louis, Ashley Braganza, Ray Hackney
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The study examines the impact of Information Systems (IS) through a consideration of improved competitiveness within a multi-business Caribbean firm. The methodology draws on a participant-observer approach for data collection and compares the application of IS by three business units within each of three organizations. It is argued that while there is already a substantial amount of research on IS effectiveness its value in the context of developing countries such as those of the Caribbean will be most significant. In this context firms are perceived to face more constraints than in developed countries so there is a need to explicitly …
