Cancer fatalism, which can be understood as the belief that cancer is a death sentence, has been found to be a deterrent to preventive cancer screening participation. This study examines factors associated with breast cancer fatalism among women. We analyzed data from a 2003 survey of women 40 years of age. The survey collected information about respondents' knowledge and attitudes regarding breast health. Analyses compared the characteristics of women who reported and those who did not report a fatalistic attitude. Women with a fatalistic attitude were more likely to be African American, to have a family history of breast cancer, …
Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone
Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone
Defense Horizons
The abuse of prisoners by U.S. Soldiers at Abu Ghraib had broad strategic consequences, leading many people around the world to question the legitimacy of U.S. goals and activities in Iraq. This paper draws on extensive unclassified reports from multiple investigations that followed Abu Ghraib, and applies key psychological as well as social-situational perspectives to develop a better grasp of the causative factors. From a psychological standpoint, most young adults are powerfully inclined to behave in accord with the social conventions and pressures around them. Especially in ambiguous circumstances, then, it is important that standards of behavior be clear and …

Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey
Faculty Works
Interscholastic athletic directors have a tremendous responsibility in guiding athletic programs in today’s ever-changing society. Their decisions on the numerous issues confronting them reflect what they perceive as ethical (Conn & Gerdes, 1998). The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of selected athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex regarding the issues and factors related to the ethical conduct of personnel involved in the directing of interscholastic athletic programs. To accomplish this, the researcher collected qualitative data from eight athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who are responsible for at least three interscholastic athletic programs that …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are present in all known plant and animal tissues and appear to be somewhat concentrated in the mammalian nervous system. Many different miRNA expression profiling platforms have been described. However, relatively little research has been published to establish the importance of 'upstream' variables in RNA isolation for neural miRNA expression profiling. We tested whether apparent changes in miRNA expression profiles may be associated with tissue processing, RNA isolation techniques, or different cell types in the sample. RNA isolation was performed on a single brain sample using eight different RNA isolation methods, and results were correlated using a conventional …
A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell
A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell
College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Jargon is a barrier to effective patient-physician communication, especially when health literacy is low or the topic is complicated. Jargon is addressed by medical schools and residency programs, but reducing jargon usage by the many physicians already in practice may require the population-scale methods used in Quality Improvement.
Objective
To assess the amount of jargon used and explained during discussions about prostate or breast cancer screening. Effective communication is recommended before screening for prostate or breast cancer because of the large number of false-positive results and the possible complications from evaluation or treatment.
Participants
Primary care internal medicine residents. …

Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure were amended effective December 1, 2006 to address concerns about discovery of electronically stored information. One of those amendments, Rule 37(e), created a safe harbor for parties who destroy relevant information as a result of the good faith, routine operation of their electronic storage systems. The rule recognizes the enhanced difficulty of preserving relevant information in the electronic context due to the automatic operation of electronic storage systems and the necessary deletion and modification of such systems' contents from time to time due to storage constraints and other technological limitations. The rule's good-faith requirement …

Linking Mine Action And Development | Humanitarian And Development Ngos, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
Mine action programmes often are not linked early and strongly enough with key development actors. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. More specifically, the guidelines seek to:
- Increase awareness that landmines and other remnants of conflict block development in many affected countries
- Strengthen coordination between mine action and …

Building-Level School Administrators' Perceptions Of Cyber Bullying , Among Students Under Their Supervision: Implications For Prevention And Intervention, James P. Colt
Education Doctoral
Research has indicated that both technology use and cyber bullying behavior by teenagers are increasing. Despite the importance of the role of building-level school administrators in establishing climate and addressing violence, the research on cyber bullying to date has not included the perceptions of building-level school administrators. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of building-level school administrators about cyber bullying, the factors that influenced their response to cyber bullying, and the measures they and their schools are taking in regard to prevention and intervention of cyber bullying. This study employed a sequential explanatory mixedmethods strategy, which …
Perceptions Of School Superintendents And A Community Task Force Regarding The Health, Pedagogical, Social, And Economic Policy And Planning Decisions For Longterm School Closure Due To Pandemic Influenza-A Multi-Method Approach, David G. Duford
Education Doctoral
The research focused on the impact pandemic influenza could have on K-12 school systems. The research looked at responses of school leaders regarding the pedagogical, community health, social, and economic impacts of a pandemic. During an influenza pandemic school districts may be asked to close for as long as 12 weeks to reduce contact among children and stop the spread of disease. School superintendents' perceptions and attitudes were sought regarding school policy implications associated with long-term closure of K-12 school districts. The research methods used for this study included: (a) electronic survey, (b) face-to-face interviews, and (c) focus group. Information …

"I Just Decided To Do My Work:" An Investigation Into Factors Leading To Academic Improvement Among Multiple-Time Retained Seventh Grade Students, Deasure A. Matthew
Education Doctoral
The problem that this study examined was the academic improvement of two- and three-time retained seventh grade students in low-performing middle school after modifying the school's leadership team and academic program. This study examined the effects of grade retention, school climate, motivation, and teacher-student relationship on academic performance. Review of research findings suggest retention yields no benefit (Jimerson (2001), Holmes & Matthews (1984), and Jackson (1975). Despite research suggesting little benefit from retention, it remains a common practice among educators (Holmes & Matthews, 1984; Jackson, 1975; Jimerson, 2001). A qualitative case study design using document analysis and structured interviews was …

Predictors Of Emesis And Time To Goal Intake After Pyloromyotomy: Analysis From A Prospective Trial., Shawn D. St Peter, Kuojen Tsao, Susan W. Sharp, G W. Holcomb Iii, Daniel J. Ostlie
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Background: Emesis after pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis is a common clinical phenomenon and the limiting factor in time to goal feeds. The amount of emesis that can be expected after myotomy is unknown. No data have been published that equip caregivers with the ability to understand which patients are more likely to have emesis and take longer to advance to goal feeds after pyloromyotomy. Therefore, we performed analysis of prospective data obtained from a randomized trial to determine if outcome can be predicted from preoperative or intraoperative variables.
Methods: The dataset was prospectively collected from a randomized trial comparing open …

Parenting Latino Toddlers And Preschoolers: Clinical And Nonclinical Samples, Marie E. Perez, Robert A. Fox
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Parenting practices contribute significantly to the social-emotional development of young children. There is limited literature that addresses the role of culture in parenting, particularly among Latino families who have very young children with significant behavior problems. The current study compared the parenting practices of 30 low-income Latino mothers whose young children had been referred for mental health services for their behavior problems with a similar group of 30 mothers of children without behavior problems. Results showed that mothers in the clinical sample nurtured their children less often and used more frequent verbal and corporal punishment as discipline than the nonclinical …
Positive Affect And Adjustment To Perceived Racism, Anthony D. Ong, Lisa M. Edwards
Positive Affect And Adjustment To Perceived Racism, Anthony D. Ong, Lisa M. Edwards
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
This research provided the first empirical investigation of the role of positive affect in moderating the relationship between perceived racism and depressive symptoms. A sample of 215 racial and ethnic minority young adults completed measures of perceived racism, daily race–related stress, positive affect, optimism, and depressive symptoms. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that positive affect and perceived racism accounted for a significant portion of the variance in depressive symptoms. Most notably, above and beyond the effects of optimism, positive affect interacted with perceived racism to weaken its influence on depression. Implications for future research directions that build on these initial findings …

The Torturing Debate On Torture, Mohammed Saif-Alden Wattad
The Torturing Debate On Torture, Mohammed Saif-Alden Wattad
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The War on Terrorism generated a correlation between terrorism and torture. This article analyzes the basic premises of the torture debate by addressing the following issues: (1) defining torture; (2) punishing torturers; (3) justifying, excusing, or pardoning torturers; and (4) conducting legal interrogation. The article criticizes existing law on the torture debate for its lack of conceptuality and coherency, thus arguing that the articulation of the existing definition of torture has been politically motivated. The article offers a conceptual understanding of the torture phenomenon as premised on five conceptual distinctions: (1) superior versus inferior, (2) active versus passive, (3) theatricality …
