Exploratory Study Of Environmental Effects On Physical Activity And Overweight In Older Women: Research Update, Heather A. Whitcomb, Kosuke Tamura, Lauren Milius, Francine Laden, Steve Melly, Peter James, Robin Puett, Ellen Cromley, Eran Ben-Joseph, Philip J. Troped

GIS Day

Background: Physical inactivity and obesity are major public health issues. Recent studies have provided evidence that attributes of the built environment influence physical activity among adults and that factors such as greater urban sprawl are related to overweight and obesity. Few studies have developed objective individual-level measures of the built environment, a geographic scale that may be more relevant to certain types of physical activity, such as walking. In addition, further research is needed to assess the associations of both objective and perceived environmental factors with physical activity. In this 2-year exploratory study funded by the National Cancer Institute, we …

Voice Onset Time As A Clinical Indicator Of Hypofunctional Voice Disorders., Amanda Arnold, Lisa Phillips, Lindsay Pickler, Whitney White, Amanda Mccamey, Christopher Mccrea

ETSU Faculty Works

The purpose of this study was to measure and compare the voice onset times (VOTs) of healthy individuals using a normal and breathy voice in an effort to determine if VOT can be used as a noninvasive clinical indicator of laryngeal function. Recordings were made of 20 adults between the ages of 20-48 with normal laryngeal function, each using a normal (Group 1) and breathy voice (Group 2). The participants’ productions were designed and collected in such a manner to control for speaking rate, vowel context, pitch, and loudness; all of which have been shown to influence VOT. A mixed …

Diagnosis And Management Of Piriformis Syndrome: An Osteopathic Approach, Lori A. Boyajian-O'Neill, Rance Mcclain, Michele K. Coleman, Pamela P. Thomas

Faculty and Staff Publications

Piriformis syndrome is a neuromuscular condition characterized by hip and buttock pain. This syndrome is often overlooked in clinical settings because its presentation may be similar to that of lumbar radiculopathy, primary sacral dysfunction, or innominate dysfunction. The ability to recognize piriformis syndrome requires an understanding of the structure and function of the piriformis muscle and its relationship to the sciatic nerve. The authors review the anatomic and clinical features of this condition, summarizing the osteopathic medical approach to diagnosis and management. A holistic approach to diagnosis requires a thorough neurologic history and physical assessment of the patient based on …

Torts And Innovation, Gideon Parchomovsky, Alex Stein Nov 2008

Torts And Innovation, Gideon Parchomovsky, Alex Stein

Michigan Law Review

This Essay exposes and analyzes a hitherto overlooked cost of tort law: its adverse effect on innovation. Tort liability for negligence, defective products, and medical malpractice is determined by reference to custom. We demonstrate that courts' reliance on custom and conventional technologies as the benchmark of liability chills innovation and distorts its path. Specifically, recourse to custom taxes innovators and subsidizes replicators of conventional technologies. We explore the causes and consequences of this phenomenon and propose two possible ways to modify tort law in order to make it more welcoming to innovation.

The Politics Of Economic Performance, And The Trade Union Movement, 1970-1982, John Hogan, Gary Murphy Nov 2008

The Politics Of Economic Performance, And The Trade Union Movement, 1970-1982, John Hogan, Gary Murphy

Articles

Here we argue that the relationship between the main Irish political parties and the trade unions, in the 1970s, was largely based upon political imperatives, with an economic subtext. The absence of strong ideological difference between the two largest Irish political parties meant they were willing to deal with the trade union moment in a somewhat similar fashion. At the start of the 1970s, the Fianna Fail government prodded the ICTU into a “voluntary” national wage agreement. This agreement was regarded as a means of stabilising the economy, attracting foreign investment, and improving Fianna Fail’s image with the electorate. While …

Pakistan’S Trade Liberalization Experience: Lessons And Way Forward, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2008

Pakistan’S Trade Liberalization Experience: Lessons And Way Forward, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistanhas been one of the fastest growing economies inAsiafor last five years. Economic growth rates have risen from 1.8 percent in 2000/01 to average 6-7 percent a year. ForPakistanthese rates are not spectacular but a reversion to mean. It may be recalled that the average annual growth rate of GDP over 60 year period ofPakistanhas been 5.2 percent. Manufacturing sector output growth was over 15 percent, exports have doubled in US dollar terms in 5 years and an open trade regime has allowed imports to triple. Tax revenues have risen by 14 percent a year reducing fiscal deficit which used …

Pakistan's Trade Liberalisation Experience And The Way Forward, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2008

Pakistan's Trade Liberalisation Experience And The Way Forward, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The article reviews Pakistan's economic growth and trade liberalisation reforms over the preceding decade, noting reduced tariffs, eliminated quantitative restrictions and improved export performance. It draws five lessons from Pakistan's reform experience, including the importance of political stability, effective communication, inter-agency coordination, adaptable policy objectives, and institution building at provincial and local levels. The author also discusses prospects for greater regional trade integration with India and South Asia.

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks Nov 2008

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bat hemoparasite studies have focused on bats as vectors for viruses that cause human diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Henipavirus, while ectoparastite studies have looked at a broad range of ecological and abiotic factors that influence ectoparasite prevalence including age, sex, roosting ecology, and habitat. Yet diet had been largely ignored in both hemoparasite and ectoparasite studies. In this study, I looked at diet as a possible factor in hemoparasite load and also looked at the relationships between hemoparasites, health (with weight as a proxy), and ectoparasites. Four guilds were compared, sanguinivores, omnivores, frugivores, and nectarivores, with an overall …

Foxm1b Transcriptionally Regulates Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression And Promotes The Angiogenesis And Growth Of Glioma Cells, Yujian Zhang, Nu Zhang, Bingbing Dai, Mingguang Liu, Raymond Sawaya, Keping Xie, Suyun Huang Nov 2008

Foxm1b Transcriptionally Regulates Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Expression And Promotes The Angiogenesis And Growth Of Glioma Cells, Yujian Zhang, Nu Zhang, Bingbing Dai, Mingguang Liu, Raymond Sawaya, Keping Xie, Suyun Huang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We previously found that FoxM1B is overexpressed in human glioblastomas and that forced FoxM1B expression in anaplastic astrocytoma cells leads to the formation of highly angiogenic glioblastoma in nude mice. However, the molecular mechanisms by which FoxM1B enhances glioma angiogenesis are currently unknown. In this study, we found that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a direct transcriptional target of FoxM1B. FoxM1B overexpression increased VEGF expression, whereas blockade of FoxM1 expression suppressed VEGF expression in glioma cells. Transfection of FoxM1 into glioma cells directly activated the VEGF promoter, and inhibition of FoxM1 expression by FoxM1 siRNA suppressed VEGF promoter activation. …
