Quantitative Trait Locus Mapping For Seed Mineral Concentrations In Two Arabidopsis Thaliana Recombinant Inbred Populations, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak Jan 2008

Quantitative Trait Locus Mapping For Seed Mineral Concentrations In Two Arabidopsis Thaliana Recombinant Inbred Populations, Brian M. Waters, Michael A. Grusak

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Biofortification of foods, achieved by increasing the concentrations of minerals such as iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), is a goal of plant scientists. Understanding genes that influence seed mineral concentration in a model plant such as Arabidopsis could help in the development of nutritionally enhanced crop cultivars. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping for seed concentrations of calcium (Ca), copper (Cu), Fe, potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), and Zn was performed using two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, Columbia (Col) × Landsberg erecta (Ler) and Cape Verde Islands (Cvi) × Ler, grown …

Chemical And Sensory Properties Of Beef Of Known Source And Finished On Wet Distillers Grains Diets Containing Varying Types And Levels Of Roughage, B. E. Jenschke, Joshua R. Benton, Chris R. Calkins, Timothy P. Carr, Kent M. Eskridge, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Beef knuckles (n = 160) were obtained from source-verified cattle finished on 30% wet distillers grains plus solubles enriched with varying levels of alfalfa hay (4 or 8%), corn silage (6 or 12%), or corn stalks (3 or 6%) based on NDF. Proximate analysis, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, fatty acid composition, and sensory analysis were conducted on the rectus femoris muscle to determine if roughage inclusion, in conjunction with wet distillers grains plus solubles and cattle source, affects beef flavor with particular interest in liver-like off-flavor. Proximate analysis, fat content, and oxidation-reduction potential were unaffected (P ≥ 0.129) by diet or …

Dental Health At Oakwood Mound, Will County, Illinois, Daniel L. Osborne Jan 2008

Dental Health At Oakwood Mound, Will County, Illinois, Daniel L. Osborne

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Human dentitions from Oakwood Mound were examined to ascertain dental health in this population. Attrition rate, carious lesions, and antemortem tooth loss were scored for each adult. No significant differences were present between the aforementioned variables by age or sex. The attrition rate supports the hypothesis that the individuals interred in Oakwood Mound shared similar subsistence strategies. The prevalence of carious lesions suggests a dependence on carbohydrates as a major dietary resource. High rates of antemortem tooth loss also may have resulted from reliance on this food source, although this connection is not as direct as the caries data. These …

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

In a clinical trial where cattle were either given Excede® or not on arrival, ADG increased and F:G was numerically improved for cattle that received Excede compared to control cattle. There were no differences between initial or final BW, or DMI observed during the receiving period due to the administration of Excede. The incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) for the 32 days of the study was 4.4% for cattle that received Excede at arrival and was different compared to the control cattle which was 12.2%. The correlation (-0.157) between DMI and morbidity observed in this study was not significant. …

Access To Justice: The Use Of Contingent Fee Arrangements By Public Officials To Vindicate Public Rights, Neil F. X. Kelly, Fidelma L. Fitzpatrick Jan 2008

Access To Justice: The Use Of Contingent Fee Arrangements By Public Officials To Vindicate Public Rights, Neil F. X. Kelly, Fidelma L. Fitzpatrick

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines the legality and efficacy of contingent fee agreements in public nuisance litigation, particularly in the context of childhood lead poisoning cases. It argues that such agreements are valid, ethical, and necessary for governments to pursue justice and remediation in cases where public health and safety are at risk. The analysis focuses on the landmark Rhode Island case against lead pigment manufacturers, highlighting how contingent fee arrangements ensure fair representation and accountability without compromising due process or impartiality.

Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick Jan 2008

Pesticides And Children: Unwitting Participants In Experimentation, Valerie Watnick

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the regulatory system in the United States has failed to adequately protect children from the dangers of toxic pesticides, particularly Malathion and Lindane, which are used in shampoos despite their well-documented health risks. The Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) was intended to address these risks but has not been effectively enforced, leaving children, especially those in underserved populations, vulnerable to severe health consequences. The continued approval of these harmful products highlights a broader regulatory failure to prioritize human health over industrial interests.

Change Of Sex Designation On Transsexuals' Birth Certificates: Public Policy And Equal Protection, Stephanie Markowitz Jan 2008

Change Of Sex Designation On Transsexuals' Birth Certificates: Public Policy And Equal Protection, Stephanie Markowitz

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the legal inconsistencies in the United States regarding the amendment of birth certificates for postoperative transsexual individuals, highlighting the disparity in treatment between male-to-female (MTF) and female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals. It argues that these inconsistencies violate the Equal Protection Clause by subjecting similarly situated individuals to different standards, often requiring MTF transsexuals to undergo more invasive surgeries than FTM transsexuals. The author advocates for a more equitable approach, emphasizing the importance of medical professionals' opinions and aligning legal standards with modern understandings of gender identity.

It Takes Three, Baby: The Lack Of Standard, Legal Definitions Of "Best Interest Of The Child" And The Right To Contract For Lesbian Potential Parents, Harvey L. Fiser, Paula K. Garrett Jan 2008

It Takes Three, Baby: The Lack Of Standard, Legal Definitions Of "Best Interest Of The Child" And The Right To Contract For Lesbian Potential Parents, Harvey L. Fiser, Paula K. Garrett

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

In order to consider the plausibility of contracts regarding Artificial Insemination, or Al, this article will first review various options and legal ramifications for choices regarding Al and then focus on the effect of inconsistent application of the Uniform Parentage Act, or UPA, among states that have chosen to adopt any legislation. This legal conundrum creates major obstacles for lesbian couples in procreation and in legal protection for children and often denies lesbian Americans the right to equal enforcement of contracts. This article will consider how the current standard of "best interest of the child" is being used in the …

Letting "Privates" Be Private: Toward A Right Of Gender Selfdetermination, Samuel E. Bartos Jan 2008

Letting "Privates" Be Private: Toward A Right Of Gender Selfdetermination, Samuel E. Bartos

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the contradictory landscape of transgender jurisprudence, particularly focusing on the legal struggles of transgender individuals to achieve recognition of their gender identity. It highlights the Kansas Supreme Court's decision in In the Matter of the Estate of Marshall G. Gardiner, which denied legal recognition of a transgender individual's marriage, contrasted with more progressive rulings in other jurisdictions. The analysis underscores the need for a consistent and inclusive legal framework to address the rights of transgender individuals, emphasizing the potential for future Supreme Court intervention to establish uniform standards.

Allies Not Adversaries: Teaching Collaboration To The Next Generation Of Doctors And Lawyers To Address Social Inequality, Elizabeth Tobin Tyler

Pro Bono Collaborative Staff Publications

Recent reports from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as well as from other medical and legal educators, stress that professional training of doctors and lawyers focuses too narrowly on knowledge-based learning, and not enough on context-based problem solving, professionalism, and ethics. Tracing recent calls from both legal and medical educators to increase the teaching of ethics, social responsibility, the lawyer-client and doctor-patient relationship, and holistic problem-solving, this article offers a model of interdisciplinary medical-legal education focused on developing practitioners sensitive to the needs of diverse and disenfranchised clients and patients. It highlights a burgeoning medical-legal partnership model, …

The Effects Of Quercetin On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Oxphos Regulation, Jeff Lee Soileau Jan 2008

The Effects Of Quercetin On Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis And Oxphos Regulation, Jeff Lee Soileau

LSU Master's Theses

A high fat diet causes a reduction in the expression of the genes of the electron transport chain, mitochondrial carrier proteins, and PGC-1α and PGC-1ß mRNA. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to numerous chronic diseases. The antioxidant quercetin has been shown to protect against damage caused by exogenous and endogenous free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine if quercetin would protect the genes of mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC-1α and PGC-1ß) and OXPHOS regulation (NDUFB5 and SDHB) from the downregulation caused by consumption of a high fat diet. The quadriceps muscle was removed from 21 male, C57BL/6J mice that …

The Developmental Continuity Of A Cognitive Model Of Worry, Kimberly Rae Zlomke Jan 2008

The Developmental Continuity Of A Cognitive Model Of Worry, Kimberly Rae Zlomke

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Research on the construct of worry has increased dramatically in the past two decades. This research has also tended to focus on adults, with only a limited number of studies examining adolescent populations. With the continued dominance of developmental psychopathology and a lifespan approach to development, it has become apparent that downward extensions of adult models of psychopathology are inadequate (cf. Mash & Dozois, 2002). As a result, investigations in adolescents are essential due to the potential developmental differences and heterotypic continuity in worry between adolescents and adults. These developmental differences and changes associated with the period of adolescence may …

Gas-Phase Formation Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals From Thermal Degradation Of Catechol, Hydroquinone, Phenols And Tobacco, Julien Gnonlonfoun Adounkpe Jan 2008

Gas-Phase Formation Of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals From Thermal Degradation Of Catechol, Hydroquinone, Phenols And Tobacco, Julien Gnonlonfoun Adounkpe

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Catechol, hydroquinone and Phenol are major constituents of the mainstream tobacco smoke. The toxicity of tobacco has been attributed to the ability of catechol and hydroquinone to undergo endogenous or exogenous redox cycling to form semiquinone type radicals responsible of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation. ROS such as hydroxyl radicals can cause severe oxidative stress on biological tissues and can provoke severe signaling pathways leading to cardiovascular and pulmonary dysfunctions and carcinogenesis. Given that semiquinone type radicals are organic radicals, characterized by their high instability and reactivity; it is somewhat surprising that they can live long enough mostly when associated …

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling Jan 2008

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Preliminary research isolated a set of thirteen candidate principles that military officers need to understand to conduct effective and humane counterinsurgency. A meta-synthesis of eight classical theorists of counterinsurgency sought support for and consensus on these principles and discovered considerable consensus on all of them. Therefore, this set could be considered a “classical” model of counterinsurgency for use in counterinsurgency campaign planning. The contemporary global political environment is very different from that the classical theorists faced. Therefore, additional research attempted to understand the changes in the environment and in the nature of insurgency to determine the changes necessary to update …

Postcolonial Writing In Louisiana: Surpassing The Role Of French Traditionalism In Alfred Mercier's L'Habitation Saint-Ybars, Mary Florence Cashell Jan 2008

Postcolonial Writing In Louisiana: Surpassing The Role Of French Traditionalism In Alfred Mercier's L'Habitation Saint-Ybars, Mary Florence Cashell

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis explores the roles of French patriarchal ideologies of the Enlightenment and exoticism in Alfred Mercier’s novel, L’habitation Saint-Ybars. His novel portrays the antebellum Creole plantation as a hierarchy of strict gender roles similar to those that Enlightenment philosophy espoused. I use the family in Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s classic, Paul et Virginie, as one example of such a hierarchy. There are also, however, several instances where Mercier departs from the paternalistic norm. I interpret Mercier’s moving away from this model to be a declaration of a unique Louisianian identity.

Moderately-Rapid Assessment Of Alkaline Desiccation Environmental Systems, David Alan Bates Jan 2008

Moderately-Rapid Assessment Of Alkaline Desiccation Environmental Systems, David Alan Bates

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A moderately-rapid assessment tool was developed to analyze the waterless desiccation compost toilet investigated in a rural Mexican setting. Over 100 social factors were identified along with the applicable technical factors that influenced the low acceptability of the toilets. A 4-point rating scale was developed to increase the ability and speed of analyzing both the social and technical data. The treatment process was an alkaline-desiccation process with mean pH values of 8.2 ± sd 1.1 and water content of 18.3% ± sd 9.9, which resulted in mean fecal coliform values of 15.0 MPN/g ± sd 31.8, drastically lower than the …

Applying original data from the author’s nationwide survey of state-focused bloggers conducted during the summer of 2007, this study addresses three primary research questions: Who are the people creating blogs focused on state politics? What motivates these people to initiate and maintain their blogs? Do these blogs play a discernable role in a given state’s politics, and if so, how? Rooted in the literature of framing; agenda setting; uses and gratifications; news norms and routines; media and …

Understanding Indigenous Canadian Traditional Health And Healing, (Gus) Louis Paul Hill Jan 2008

Understanding Indigenous Canadian Traditional Health And Healing, (Gus) Louis Paul Hill

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This qualitative research study is situated within an Indigenous research methodology. The goal of the research was to develop an in-depth understanding of traditional healing from the perspectives of practitioners of traditional healing. It was important to explore the experiences of practitioners of traditional healing because there continues to be a lack of literature on this subject, as well as a significant lack of understanding and awareness about traditional healing and Indigenous Canadian people in mainstream society. The theoretical underpinnings of this research are holism and the four aspects of the self, visually represented in the Anishnaabe medicine wheel.

In-depth …

Perspectives On The Post-Degree Supervision Needs Of Ontario Social Workers, Heather Jane Hair Jan 2008

Perspectives On The Post-Degree Supervision Needs Of Ontario Social Workers, Heather Jane Hair

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The dominant contemporary post-degree supervision literature reflects a long held belief that social workers employed in various practice settings need a combination of further education, support, and administrative guidance from someone more expert than themselves. In spite of these claims, a noticeable gap in knowledge is learning what, if anything, social workers need from supervision to help them provide effective services.

My particular interest is post-degree supervision within the social work landscape of Canada. I chose to focus this research project on the supervision needs of social workers in Ontario, the province where I have spent many years working as …
