Is She Chinese Or American? On The Identity Communication Patterns Between Caucasian Parents And Their Adopted Chinese Daughters In The U.S., May H. Gao, Deanna F. Womack

Faculty Articles

This study explored patterns of identity communication between Caucasian parents and their adopted Chinese daughters. As they grow up in "biracial" and "bicultural" families, adoptees must integrate multiple identities of being "ethnically Chinese," "culturally American," "female," "abandoned," and "adopted." Using qualitative methods, the researchers conducted 1-1 ½ hour in-depth interviews of adoptive parents to identify communication patterns and strategies used to create and manage the bicultural identities of their Chinese daughters.

Power Paradox: The Algorithm Of Carbon And International Development, Steven Ferrey Jan 2008

Power Paradox: The Algorithm Of Carbon And International Development, Steven Ferrey

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

The world is increasingly becoming smaller -- and hotter. The Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism, designed to reduce carbon emissions in developing nations and provide tradable Carbon Emission Reduction credits, has not motivated significant renewable energy investments in developing nations. Without such investments, especially in Asia which is expected to account for more than half of future growth in carbon emissions, world efforts to significantly reduce global warming have zero chance of success. The problem is not technological, but rather an institutional challenge to develop the correct laws, incentives and contract documents and tariffs to succeed in developing countries. This …

Enzymatic Production And Biological Activities Of Cellobio-Oligosaccharides From Lignocellulose, Misook Kim Jan 2008

Enzymatic Production And Biological Activities Of Cellobio-Oligosaccharides From Lignocellulose, Misook Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer in nature and is the major component of lignocellulosic biomass. It has potential to produce not only glucose but value¨Cadded products such as cellobiose and oligosaccharides. Typically, enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose produces glucose and a small amount of cellobiose. Modification of cellulase solutions altered ratio of glucose to cellobiose produced. The addition of glucose oxidase, gluconolactone, or gluconic acid significantly increased the amount of cellobiose remaining at the end of cellulose hydrolysis. Addition of glucose oxidase resulted in cellobiose being 23.7% of the product sugars from pure cellulose and 14.1% from ligonocellulose (sugarcane bagasse). …

A Century Of Land Use And Water Quality In Watersheds Of The Continental U.S., Whitney P. Broussard Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Human endeavors, particularly the agricultural and industrial activities of the last half century, now produce more biologically available nitrogen (N) than all other natural sources combined. The increased N availability can have consequences for the health of aquatic biota on the local, regional, and global scales. One manifestation of this problem is the formation of coastal hypoxic zones where terrestrial N loading creates eutrophic conditions in coastal waters. This dissertation examines a century of changes in land use and water quality to quantify the relationships between agricultural land use practices and riverine N yields in the Mississippi River Basin and …

Segmented Field Electron Conformal Therapy Planning Algorithm, David Jaquet Perrin Jan 2008

Segmented Field Electron Conformal Therapy Planning Algorithm, David Jaquet Perrin

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: Segmented-field electron conformal therapy (SFECT) is rarely used, or if used, used sub optimally, primarily due to inadequate tools for its planning. The development of SFECT planning tools could help begin to bring electron therapy to the same level of sophistication as x-ray and proton therapy, resulting in greater consideration by radiation oncologists. The purpose of this work was to develop a forward planning algorithm that will improve segmentation of the SFECT treatment field. It was hypothesized that a forward planning algorithm can produce segmented-field ECT fields that improve dose conformity as the number of beam energies is increased …

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Stream Water Chemistry In A Headwater Catchment Of Central Louisiana, April Bryantmason Jan 2008

Spatial And Temporal Dynamics Of Stream Water Chemistry In A Headwater Catchment Of Central Louisiana, April Bryantmason

LSU Master's Theses

One of the dominant themes of stream water quality research has been the effect of nutrients and organic materials on eutrophication of coastal waters. Despite this prevalence in water quality research, few studies have been conducted on water quality changes in low-gradient watersheds under a humid, warm subtropical climate, such as those in the coastal plains of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. This study addresses: (1) the nutrient conditions in headwater streams of a low-gradient, subtropical watershed, especially as it relates to the suggested criteria by the Environtmental Protection Agency (EPA), (2) organic and inorganic carbon dynamics in the headwaters …

Reciprocal Regulation Of Par-4 And Caspase-8 In The Trail Signaling Pathway, Padhma Ranganathan Jan 2008

Reciprocal Regulation Of Par-4 And Caspase-8 In The Trail Signaling Pathway, Padhma Ranganathan

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Par‐4 is a pro‐apoptotic tumor suppressor that is mutated, suppressed or inactivated in cancer. Par‐4 exploits components of the extrinsic pathway to cause apoptosis selectively of cancer cells. This study identified Par‐4 as an essential component of the apoptotic pathway induced by TRAIL, which selectively targets cancer cells. RNA interference‐mediated knockdown of Par‐4 rendered cancer cells unresponsive to TRAIL‐induced apoptosis. Cells with knocked‐down levels of Par‐4 were deficient in the activation of the apoptosis‐initiator caspase‐8 and the apoptosis‐effector caspase‐3 in response to TRAIL. Par‐4 was identified as a critical mediator of membrane translocation of caspase‐8 and the adapter protein FADD. …

Effect Of The SmartstepTm Stabilization System On Balance In Older Adults In An Independent Living Residence, Ann L. Livengood

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

An increase in postural sway is one of the risk factors that have been linked to an increased incidence of falls in the older adult population. Researchers have shown that peripheral sensation is crucial in maintaining a static posture for adults of all ages. It has been reported that older adults have decreased tactile sensation of the plantar surface of their feet. and when the sensory feedback was increased older adults had improved postural control. It was hypothesized that facilitation of the sole of the foot with the use of a semirigid foot orthotic would result in improved postural stability …

Neonatal Respiratory Virus Infection Shapes Pulmonary Function In Adult Mice, Dahui You Jan 2008

Neonatal Respiratory Virus Infection Shapes Pulmonary Function In Adult Mice, Dahui You

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza are the two most common causes of acute lower respiratory tract infections in infants. Epidemiological data suggest that both severe RSV and influenza infections during infancy are associated with long-term pulmonary function abnormalities. Despite of the severe burdens of RSV and influenza infections in infants, no efficacious vaccines are available for RSV and the current vaccine strategy for influenza is inconvenient due to the fact that vaccines are made annually based on the prediction of circulating strains in the next season. New strategies in vaccine development have been slow to arrive partly due to …
