Host Community Acculturation Expectations Toward Immigrant Groups; An Evaluation Of Theoretical Models, Perspectives, And Factors Encouraging The Development Of Multicultural Societies, Carmen Vakis Jan 2008

Host Community Acculturation Expectations Toward Immigrant Groups; An Evaluation Of Theoretical Models, Perspectives, And Factors Encouraging The Development Of Multicultural Societies, Carmen Vakis

Theses : Honours

The ability of immigrants to integrate into a new society is dependent on a number of factors including the strength of an immigrant's ethnic identity, willingness of the immigrant to accept the beliefs, values, and cultural practices of the host society, and attitudes of members of the host society toward immigrants. This paper reviews research on attitudes toward immigration, in relation to theoretical approaches including Berry's (2003) model of acculturation expectations. Factors discussed throughout this review as contributing to host community acceptance of immigrants include cultural awareness and understanding, preconceived misconceptions and stereotypes, and perceptions of threat to resources and …

The Impact Of Implementation Of Voip In Call Centres : A Western Australia Perspective, Syed Moniruzzoha Jan 2008

The Impact Of Implementation Of Voip In Call Centres : A Western Australia Perspective, Syed Moniruzzoha

Theses : Honours

By fostering the finalization of open standards and the convergence of voice, video and data, the internet protocol provides an ideal driver for the definition of the infrastructure of new multimedia and advanced communications applications (Adams & Bhalla, 2005). The key advantages of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoiP) for enterprises have been the promise of lower costs, infrastructure consolidation and increased flexibility. Carriers are also positioning VoiP as a cost-saving business solution. It is an application which seemed like a godsend to business and people alike who rely on telephony services (Blood, 2005). The aim of this study was to …

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger Jan 2008

Do We Want To Measure The Quality Of Care For Vulnerable Older People? The Acove Approach., Neil S. Wenger

Center for Policy Research

There's limited information available about measuring the quality of medical care that is targeted to the needs of older patients. And there's very limited pressure on the system to provide high quality geriatric care. Why is that? Because the quality measures haven't been adequately developed and implemented, and it's more difficult to measure care for an older sample. Measuring care for ill older adults is complex, because they tend to have multiple medical conditions, and they demonstrate substantial variation in goals for care (Wenger and colleagues 2007). The Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) project began in 1998 as a …

Bridging The Theory To Practice Gap Using Performance Based Simulation, Christopher Churchouse, Cobie Rudd Jan 2008

Bridging The Theory To Practice Gap Using Performance Based Simulation, Christopher Churchouse, Cobie Rudd

EDU-COM International Conference

Simulation is a technique, not a technology, to replace or amplify real experiences with guided experiences, often immersive in nature, that evoke or replicate substantial aspects of the real world in a fully interactive fashion. (Gaba, 2004). There has been a growing acceptance on the use of simulation in teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), cardiology skills, anaesthesia skills, and crisis management largely focusing on responding to physiological events. However its use in other health and education arenas is less common due to their complexity of characterisation. There are a number of reasons for this: Complex performance based scenarios can be difficult …

Higher Education And The Challenge Of Growth And Sustainability, Arsalan Ghorbani Sheikhneshin Jan 2008

Higher Education And The Challenge Of Growth And Sustainability, Arsalan Ghorbani Sheikhneshin

EDU-COM International Conference

The first part of this paper explains the linkage among higher education, internationalization, development and social justice. The paper argues that universities are institutions that, in all societies, have performed basic functions which result from the particular, combination of cultural and ideological, social and economic, educational and scientific roles that have been assigned to them. They are multi-purpose or multi-product institutions, which contribute to the generation and transmission of ideology, the selection and formation of elites, the social development and educational upgrading of societies, the production and application of knowledge and the training of the highly skilled labour force. This …

Embedding Indigenous Content Into Qualitative Research In Psychology In Reflective Case Studies: A Case For Social Change, Andrew Guilfoyle Jan 2008

Embedding Indigenous Content Into Qualitative Research In Psychology In Reflective Case Studies: A Case For Social Change, Andrew Guilfoyle

EDU-COM International Conference

Australian universities recognise cultural competency as an essential attribute for graduates. Within this context, The Australian Psychology Accreditation Committee (APAC) has enforced requirements for students within psychology programmes to have access to Indigenous content. Though Indigenous participation rates are low, the inclusion of Indigenous content or what is often labeled ‗Indigenous psychology‘ acts at least as a symbolic gesture and important step forward in reconciling the massively disadvantaged position of Indigenous Australians. However there is little to date in that way of guides to help develop appropriate teaching methods to include such content more substantially in programmes. This paper reflects …

Moving Beyond National Borders: Globalization, Higher Education, And International Politics, Reza Simbar Jan 2008

Moving Beyond National Borders: Globalization, Higher Education, And International Politics, Reza Simbar

EDU-COM International Conference

Globalization has at least four far reaching implications for higher education. First is the constriction of monies available for discretionary activities, such as post secondary education. Second is the growing importance of techno science and fields closely involved with the markets, particularly the international markets? Third is the tightening relationship between multinational corporations and state agencies concerned with product development and innovations. Fourth is the increased focus of multinationals and established industrial countries on global intellectual property strategies. This paper argues interconnections among globalization, higher education and international politics, their different impacts and implications. In this paper the author offers …

Cross-Cultural Perspectives Of Knowledge Sharing For Different Virtual Classroom Environments: A Case Study Of Thai Students In Thai And Australian Universities, N Thongprasert, J M. Cross

EDU-COM International Conference

Collaborative learning has been accepted as an effective learning style that can enhance students‘ and instructors‘ ability to create knowledge and develop understanding. To enhance an effective collaboration learning environment needs the sharing of similar knowledge, background and experience through information communication technologies (ICT). There are a number of ways in which culture influences the use of these information technologies. The cultural characteristics, which can be viewed as the influencing factors on knowledge sharing in a virtual classroom, are power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and collectivism. The main purpose of this study was to investigate how the differences in cultural …

Emoderation: Contextualising Online Learning In Undergraduate Nurse Education, Adrian K. Morgan Jan 2008

Emoderation: Contextualising Online Learning In Undergraduate Nurse Education, Adrian K. Morgan

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

The wide availability of flexible, mixed-mode methods of course delivery to nursing students places increased demands on the skills and adaptability of nurse educators. The rapid uptake of computer-moderated learning, in particular, has required educators to reconsider some of their long-established pedagogical beliefs and practices which, over time, have faithfully sustained face-to-face teaching in classrooms. Inevitably, a certain degree of pedagogical adjustment is required when teaching online to ensure that the qualities of educational processes are consonant with expected learning outcomes. This paper discusses these important aspects, together with strategies that can help optimise educational practice, with a view to …

Traditional Pedagogical Tools: Examining Peer Feedback In The Basic Communication Course, Julie Semlak Jan 2008

Traditional Pedagogical Tools: Examining Peer Feedback In The Basic Communication Course, Julie Semlak

Basic Communication Course Annual

Peer feedback is used in many basic communication courses, yet little is known about the pedagogical value of the written peer feedback provided for speakers, or the process of providing peer feedback. Using social learning theory as a theoretical foundation, this study explores the use of peer feedback in the basic communication course.

Findings indicate the content of peer feedback is less useful than instructor feedback for preparing future speeches. However, this study also reveals the process of providing peer feedback provides a model for vicarious learning, allowing basic course students to critically analyze a speech presented by a peer. …

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart Jan 2008

Breast Health Behavior Among Lesbians: The Role Of Health Beliefs, Heterosexism, And Homophobia, Dana Dehart

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Health Belief Model was used as a conceptual framework for exploring how health beliefs and perceptions of heterosexism and homophobia in health care relate to lesbians' breast health behaviors, including use of breast exams and mammograms, visits to health care providers, and use of complementary/alternative care. A total of 173 exclusively homosexual women completed survey measures assessing health beliefs, experiences of heterosexism/homophobia, and health maintenance behaviors as these related to breast health. Findings indicated that women perceived heterosexism and homophobia from providers to influence the amount of discussion they had with providers and, to a lesser extent, care received, …

How Do Defense Companies Understand And Measure Human Capital, Alexander Eksir Jan 2008

How Do Defense Companies Understand And Measure Human Capital, Alexander Eksir

Student Scholarship

How do we reliably sustain performance of the US defense assets over their expected life cycles in an industry where the legacy skills of employees at an average age of 49 will soon be lost to attrition? While the defense industry has illustrated reliable results in the past, we now must pay serious attention to the Human Capital if we are to continue to sustain performance. This study examines the ways that HC is understood and monitored by upper echelon who work in high-tech defense companies, government as well as individuals in academia who are familiar with the defense industry.

Agricultural Systems: Agroecology And Rural Innovations For Development, Edited By Sieglinde Snapp And Barry Pound [Book Review], Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

To welcome yet another book on sustainable development, a reviewer must look for what is unique and what adds value to the volumes already published. In Agricultural Systems, editors Sieglinde Snapp and Barry Pound have assembled a collection of chapters that goes beyond the usual praise and criticism of the green revolution and the focus on economic development. Their book provides a first-hand story by people with lengthy experiences in the field, especially in Africa, who have developed and tested grassroots, participatory development approaches. The result is a valuable set of principles, strategies and case studies that paint a new …
