Bootstrap Confidence Intervals And Coverage Probabilities Of Regression Parameter Estimates Using Trimmed Elemental Estimation, Matthew Hall, Matthew S. Mayo
Bootstrap Confidence Intervals And Coverage Probabilities Of Regression Parameter Estimates Using Trimmed Elemental Estimation, Matthew Hall, Matthew S. Mayo
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Mayo and Gray introduced the leverage residual-weighted elemental (LRWE) classification of regression estimators and a new method of estimation called trimmed elemental estimation (TEE), showing the efficiency and robustness of TEE point estimates. Using bootstrap methods, properties of various trimmed elemental estimator interval estimates to allow for inference are examined and estimates with ordinary least squares (OLS) and least sum of absolute values (LAV) are compared. Confidence intervals and coverage probabilities for the estimators using a variety of error distributions, sample sizes, and number of parameters are examined. To reduce computational intensity, randomly selecting elemental subsets to calculate the parameter …

The Multinomial Regression Modeling Of The Cause-Of-Death Mortality Of The Oldest Old In The U.S., Dudley L. Poston Jr., Hosik Min
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The statistical modeling of the causes of death of the oldest old (persons aged 80 and over) in the U.S. in 2001 was conducted in this article. Data were analyzed using a multinomial logistic regression model (MNLM) because multiple causes of death are coded on death certificates and the codes are nominal. The percentage distribution of the 10 major causes of death among the oldest old was first examined; we next estimated a multinomial logistic regression equation to predict the likelihood of elders dying of one of the causes of death compared to dying of an “other cause.” The independent …

The Foundations Of The American Common Market, Norman R. Williams
The Foundations Of The American Common Market, Norman R. Williams
Notre Dame Law Review
The United States Constitution commits the United States to a common market system, yet, unfortunately, the nature and scope of the American common market have been incompletely — and, at times, inconsistently — described by the U.S. Supreme Court. This Article provides an original, theoretical account of the Court's commitment to national economic union. As I argue, the central constitutional commitment is one of deliberative equality — that is, states and localities may regulate or tax interstate commerce if and only if the government gives equal regard to similarly situated in-state and out-of-state interests burdened by the regulation or tax. …

To Travel Or To Compete? Motivations Of Masters Swimmers, Nancy M. Hritz, William D. Ramos
To Travel Or To Compete? Motivations Of Masters Swimmers, Nancy M. Hritz, William D. Ramos
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
The underlying motivations behind participating in sports event such as a swim meet are complex and varied especially for adult participants. These motivations may be related to the thrill of the competition, or the excitement of traveling to a new pool or aquatic facility. Investigation of motivations behind participation can enable aquatic facility managers to create memorable experiences that boost participation and encourage repeat visitors that have social and economic benefits for the aquatic facility and event. We motivations of Masters swimmers using the Participant Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ) modified for swimmers and the Travel Career Ladder (TCL) at the 2006 …

Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon
Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon
Scholarly Works
Most states make an exception to their statutory rape laws for sexual acts involving an adolescent victim, who is below the age of consent, when the defendant is close in age to the victim (i.e., generally no older than three or four years). However, a few states explicitly limit such exceptions (commonly referred to as Romeo and Juliet exceptions) to only those situations involving teens who are of the opposite gender. Thus, adolescents in these states who have sex with someone below the age of consent, and who are also the same gender as the defendant, cannot avail themselves to …
Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers
Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The present study examined the correlations between implicit and explicit self-esteem and codependency. Implicit self-esteem involves automatic, over-learned self-evaluations and explicit self-esteem refers to conscious feelings of one’s self. It was predicted that participants who scored higher on the implicit self-esteem measure would score lower on the codependency scale, regardless of scores on the explicit self-esteem scale. Participants engaged in a timed task involving me/not-me primes and positive/negative words to measure implicit self-esteem. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Spann-Fischer Codependency Scale were used to measure explicit self-esteem and codependency, respectively. Should a strong negative correlation be found between codependency …

A Paradox Of Altruism: How Caring About Future Generations Can Result In Poverty For Everyone (Game-Theoretic Analysis), Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich
A Paradox Of Altruism: How Caring About Future Generations Can Result In Poverty For Everyone (Game-Theoretic Analysis), Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Political and social activists are rightfully concerned about future generations: whenever a country borrows money, or an environmental situation worsens, this means, in effect, that we impose an additional burdens on future generations. There is clearly a conflict between the present generation's actions and interests and the welfare of the future generations. There exists a mathematical toolbox that provides solutions to many well-defined conflict situations: namely, the toolbox of game theory. It therefore seems reasonable to apply game theory techniques to the conflict between the generations. In this paper, we show that we need to be very cautious about this …
Now He Belong To The Ages: Memorializing Abraham Lincoln, Jonathan Jeffrey
Now He Belong To The Ages: Memorializing Abraham Lincoln, Jonathan Jeffrey
SCL Faculty and Staff Publications
Reviled by many of his fellow Kentuckians while he was president, Abraham Lincoln became Kentucky’s, and America’s, idol during the 20th century. The Commonwealth is home to a growing list of notable Lincoln memorials. This article examines the history and folklore surrounding a number of these monuments.

Resisting And Transforming: Pastoral Theology And Care Of Korean Military Wives, Bocheol Chang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Korean military wives have been symbolized as "dirty," "nothing," and "evil" by Koreans, Korean Americans, and their American families. They also experience same level of oppression and discrimination within Korean American congregations. In Korea, the women suffered poverty, sexual violence, and Confucian gender discrimination. They have also experienced racial and sexual oppression, intercultural familial conflicts and violence, and identity crisis in America. All of those experiences are caused the sense of not belonging of Korean military wives.
The sense of not belonging and desperation can be explained well by Andrew Sung Park's theology of han. The theology of han …
Role Of Perceived Partner Responsiveness On Mexican American Males' Pain Severity And Depressive Symptomatology, Carolyn M. Freedman
Role Of Perceived Partner Responsiveness On Mexican American Males' Pain Severity And Depressive Symptomatology, Carolyn M. Freedman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the role of cultural indicators in moderating the influence of perceived partner responses and relationship satisfaction on pain severity and depressive symptomatology among a sample of 62 married and cohabiting Mexican American men, the majority of whom were first generation Mexican Americans, with chronic back and/or neck pain. The cultural indicators were not found to act as moderators in the analyses that involved pain severity and depressive symptomatology as outcome variables. Nevertheless, this study's findings are an important initial step in understanding the relationship dynamics among an understudied population with chronic pain and raise many important questions …
A Study Of Colorado's Tabor Law And Its Influence On Public Finance During The 2001 Recession, Zak Brewer
A Study Of Colorado's Tabor Law And Its Influence On Public Finance During The 2001 Recession, Zak Brewer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Colorado's constitutional Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR) is a product of the citizen initiative process, a mechanism of direct democracy that allows citizens to circumvent legislatures and enact laws themselves. A prominent argument against this process is that such a mode of lawmaking can generate conflicts within state constitutions and bring about unintended consequences. This paper considers the Colorado state budget difficulties that arose during the 2001 recession, the relationship of TABOR and those difficulties, and finds that TABOR resulted in unintended consequences that were unforeseen by voters who approved the measure. Examples of these unanticipated, unintended consequences include: significant …

Is Bigger Better Or Is Less More? : American Compared To Non-American Consumption Habits, Amanda Bratcher, Sofia Aneas, Jesus Lopez
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The purpose of this experiment was to determine if American participants compared to non-Americans participants would choose a bigger consumable item regardless of its cost when asked to choose between a smaller and larger item. Participants were shown a series of items that consisted of five pairings of two different-sized consumable items and asked to state their preference after each set of items was presented. This process was administered one time with pricing information of the items made known to the participants and one time without pricing information, counterbalancing of pricing information was utilized. The results concluded that price did …

Red Bull Marketing Techniques, Jennifer Hogenmiller, Kailey Steuber
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The differences in marketing techniques using the product Red Bull Energy Drink was investigated in this research project. Three techniques were used: the participant was read aloud information, the participant read information from a pamphlet, and the participant was shown a power point presentation. These techniques were tested to discover whether the marketing technique influenced the consumer purchase of the product. 64 participants were tested, but only 31 participants’ data was used. Many participants’ data had to be excluded due to factors of affiliation and missing data. After conducting a one-way ANOVA, we did find statistical significance between the presentation …

Can’T Test This: Test Performance And Anxiety, Brian Judd, Danielle Merli, Jamie Zagar
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
We analyzed test anxiety with performance on a standardized test. We had four groups of participants. We looked at two variables: time warning and presence of a confederate. We hypothesized that the performance of participants in a more natural test environment (testing in the presence of another test taker, i.e., the confederate) would perform worse than those who were tested by themselves, and that those who received a time warning would perform worse than those who did not receive a time warning. Those with a higher GPA would have performed better overall on the test. There was not a significant …
