The International Joint Commission And Great Lakes Diversions: Indirectly Extending The Reach Of The Boundary Waters Treaty, A. Dan Tarlock
The International Joint Commission And Great Lakes Diversions: Indirectly Extending The Reach Of The Boundary Waters Treaty, A. Dan Tarlock
All Faculty Scholarship
The 1909 Boundary Waters Treaty (Treaty) is a model of, international water resources cooperation because it provides a permanent dispute mechanism, the six member International Joint Commission (IJC). Thus, both Canada and the United States have much to celebrate on the 100th anniversary of the Treaty. However, the most interesting aspect of the Treaty is the regime's ability to evolve through state practice beyond its original dispute resolution function, despite the inconsistent support for IJC involvement in transboundary water issues of the United States. The Treaty has been severely criticized by governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), especially in, Canada, for …

Distributing Discipline: Race, Politics, And Punishment At The Frontlines Of Welfare Reform, Richard Fording, Joe Soss, Sanford F. Schram
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Numerous studies have confirmed that race plays an important role in shaping public preferences toward both redistribution and punishment. Likewise, studies suggest that punitive policy tools tend to be adopted by state governments in a pattern that tracks with the racial composition of state populations. Such evidence testifies to the enduring power of race in American politics, yet it has limited value for understanding how disciplinary policies get applied to individuals in implementation settings. To illuminate the relationship between race and the application of punitive policy tools, we analyze sanction patterns in the TANF program. Drawing on a model of …

Maps of science help us visualize and conceptualize how different scientific disciplines relate to each other. Although many maps assume a hierarchy of disciplines, Richard Klavans and Kevin Boyack believe the structure should be circular.
Cost Of Lifetime Immunosuppression Coverage For Kidney Transplant Recipients., Timothy F. Page, Robert Woodward
Cost Of Lifetime Immunosuppression Coverage For Kidney Transplant Recipients., Timothy F. Page, Robert Woodward
Health Management & Policy
On January 1, 2000, Medicare extended the coverage of immunosuppression medications from 3 years to life for elderly and disabled kidney transplant recipients. This research estimates the impact of extending this lifetime coverage to all kidney transplant recipients on Medicare's cash flows. The study finds that extending coverage to all kidney transplant recipients would have increased Medicare's net cash outflows if the coverage were extended for patients of all income levels. There is evidence that extending coverage to only patients in the lowest income quartile could have resulted in a net cost savings to Medicare.

Variation in the temporal pattern of vulnerability can provide important insights into predator-prey relationships and the evolution of antipredator behavior. We illustrate these points with a system that has coyotes (Canis latrans) as a predator and two species of congeneric deer (Odocoileus spp.) as prey. The deer employ different antipredator tactics (aggressive defense vs. flight) that result in contrasting patterns of age-dependent vulnerability in their probability of being captured when encountered by coyotes. We use longterm survival data and a simple mathematical model to show that (1) species differences in age-dependent vulnerability are reflected in seasonal predation rates …

Southwest Missouri Water Quality Improvement Project (Wqip) Elk River Basin Water Quality Gap Analysis, Mec Water Resources, Inc., Ozarks Envrionmental Water Resources Institute
OEWRI Technical Reports
Rapid growth and expansion in southwest Missouri are threatening the water resources this region’s population, agriculture, and tourism industry so heavily depend upon. In response to this threat, several watershed groups in southwest Missouri collaborated to secure federal funding for water protection efforts in this region. As a result of this effort, the Environmental Resources Coalition (ERC) received a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant to develop and manage the Southwest Missouri Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP), a mult-year, multi-stakeholder effort to address water quality issues in this region. WQIP has initially been tasked with assembling, evaluating, and interpreting existing …
Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Contact Rates In Female White-Tailed Deer, Lene J. Kjaer, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen
Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Contact Rates In Female White-Tailed Deer, Lene J. Kjaer, Eric M. Schauber, Clayton K. Nielsen
Publications
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are important game mammals and potential reservoirs of diseases of domestic livestock; thus, diseases of deer are of great concern to wildlife managers. Contact, either direct or indirect, is necessary for disease transmission, but we know little about the ecological contexts that promote intrasexual contact among deer. Using pair-wise direct contacts estimated from Global Positioning System collar locations and joint utilization distributions (JUDs), we assessed habitats in which contacts occur to test whether direct contact rates among female white-tailed deer in different social groups differs among land-cover types. We also tested whether contact rates …

In Vitro Phytochemical Screening And Antibacterial Activity Of Organic Leaf Extracts Of Spathodea Campanulata P. Beauv Against Hospital Isolated Bacterial Strains, Rangasamy Dhanabalan Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Spathodea campanulata P. Beauv is extensively used in Indian traditional and folklore medicines to cure various human ailments. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, steroids and terpenoids. In vitro antibacterial studies of the leaf extracts were carried out on eight medically important bacterial strains using agar disc diffusion method. The antibacterial assay using petroleum ether leaf extracts showed good inhibitory activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae and compared with standard antibiotic Streptomycin.

We wanted to see if there was a correlation between sleep and/or caffeine and students’ grade point average (GPA). To do this we surveyed 101 Lindenwood undergraduate students. We asked them how much caffeine they consumed in a day, how much sleep they get within a seven day period, and their GPA, as well as basic demographic questions. Our study found that there was a weak negative relationship between sleep and GPA whereas no relationship between caffeine consumption and GPA. We conclude that since no relationship has been found, we have made suggestions on how to investigate further given some …

Using the self-efficacy literature as a theoretical framework, this article discusses the reality of academic achievement and academic performance among selected African American middle school girls. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches are used to investigate the influence of selfefficacy. Thirty-seven African American middle school girls filled out an adversity questionnaire and also responded to the Children’s Self-efficacy Survey. Based on the results, 10 girls were selected for in-depth interviews. Responses to interview questions reveal how these girls’ self-efficacy helped them not only cope with obstacles in their lives but also excel academically. These responses provide important insights for educators …

Application Of Dynamic Poisson Models To Japanese Cancer Mortality Data, Shuichi Midorikawa, Etsuo Miyaoka, Bruce Smith
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
A dynamic Poisson model is used with a Bayesian approach to modeling to predict cancer mortality. The complexity of the posterior distribution prohibits direct evaluation of the posterior, and so parameters are estimated by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The model is applied to analyze lung and stomach cancer data which have been collected in Japan.
