Successful Weight Loss Maintenance In Relation To Method Of Weight Loss, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Amy A. Gorin, Hollie A. Raynor, Deborah F. Tate, Joseph L. Fava, Rena R. Wing

Publications and Research

This study examined the relation between method of weight loss and long-term maintenance among successful weight losers enrolled in a weight-loss maintenance trial. Participants were 186 adults (mean age = 51.6 +/- 10.7 years, mean BMI = 28.6 +/- 4.7 kg/m(2)) enrolled in the STOP Regain trial who had lost at least 10% of their body weight in the past 2 years using a very low-calorie diet (VLCD; n = 24), commercial program (n = 95), or self-guided approach (n = 67). Participants were randomized to a weight-maintenance intervention delivered face to face or over the internet or to a …

Neuroendocrine Peptides Neuropeptide-Y (Npy) And Peptide-Yy (Pyy) Suppress Cl- Secretion And K+ Secretion In Guinea Pig Distal Colon Through Action At Y2-Receptors, Susan T. Halm, Jin Zhang, Dan R. Halm Nov 2008

Neuroendocrine Peptides Neuropeptide-Y (Npy) And Peptide-Yy (Pyy) Suppress Cl- Secretion And K+ Secretion In Guinea Pig Distal Colon Through Action At Y2-Receptors, Susan T. Halm, Jin Zhang, Dan R. Halm

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Electrogenic Cl– and K+ secretion in isolated mucosa from guinea pig distal colon measured as short-circuit current (Isc) and transepithelial conductance (Gt) were stimulated by epinephrine (epi), prostaglandin-E2 (PGE2) and carbachol (CCh). neuropeptide-Y (NPY) and peptide-YY (PYY) inhibited by 60% Cl– secretion activated by either PGE2 or PGE2+CCh with EC50’s of 16nM and 6nM, respectively. Neither peptide markedly inhibited the transient component of the PGE2+CCh response. Immunoreactivity (IR) for NPY was present in enteric ganglia and in proximity with crypts. Basolateral membranes of …

Behavioural Analysis Of A Nociceptive Event In Fish: Comparisons Between Three Species Demonstrate Specific Responses, Siobhan C. Reilly, John P. Quinn, Andrew R. Cossins, Lynne U. Sneddon Nov 2008

Behavioural Analysis Of A Nociceptive Event In Fish: Comparisons Between Three Species Demonstrate Specific Responses, Siobhan C. Reilly, John P. Quinn, Andrew R. Cossins, Lynne U. Sneddon

Sentience Collection

Nociception is the sensory mechanism by which potentially harmful stimuli are detected in animals and humans. The behavioural responses to noxious stimulation have been studied in two fish species thus far. However, since species-specific differences are seen in mammals, more species need to be examined to determine whether nociceptive responses are generic in fish. The present study investigated the behavioural and respiratory response to an acute noxious or potentially painful stimulus in common carp (Cyprinus carpio), zebrafish (Danio rerio) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Behavioural parameters such as frequency of swimming, use of cover and any anomalous behaviour were measured …

A Mapping Of Ethnic Entrepreneurship In Ireland, Thomas Cooney, Anthony Flynn Nov 2008

A Mapping Of Ethnic Entrepreneurship In Ireland, Thomas Cooney, Anthony Flynn

Reports

The research findings presented in this report represent the first major attempt to map in a systematic fashion ethnic entrepreneurial activity in Ireland. The rapid transformation of the demographic profile of Ireland in this decade through unprecedented levels of immigration has stimulated debate on the economic and social policy implications of the new multi-racial Ireland. One facet to this policy debate is the potential for non-Irish nationals to bolster indigenous business activity. It was the aim of this research to capture the essential nature of ethnic entrepreneurship in Ireland in 2008 with a view to better informing policy formulation as …

Mental Rotation In Human Infants: A Sex Difference, David S. Moore, Scott P. Johnson Nov 2008

Mental Rotation In Human Infants: A Sex Difference, David S. Moore, Scott P. Johnson

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

A sex difference on mental-rotation tasks has been demonstrated repeatedly, but not in children less than 4 years of age. To demonstrate mental rotation in human infants, we habituated 5-month-old infants to an object revolving through a 240° angle. In successive test trials, infants saw the habituation object or its mirror image revolving through a previously unseen 120° angle. Only the male infants appeared to recognize the familiar object from the new perspective, a feat requiring mental rotation. These data provide evidence for a sex difference in mental rotation of an object through three-dimensional space, consistently seen in adult populations.

Evaluating Online Health Information: Beyond Readability Formulas, Gondy Leroy, Stephen Helmreich, James Cowie, Trudi Miller '08, Wei Zheng '08

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Although understanding health information is important, the texts provided are often difficult to understand. There are formulas to measure readability levels, but there is little understanding of how linguistic structures contribute to these difficulties. We are developing a toolkit of linguistic metrics that are validated with representative users and can be measured automatically. In this study, we provide an overview of our corpus and how readability differs by topic and source. We compare two documents for three groups of linguistic metrics. We report on a user study evaluating one of the differentiating metrics: the percentage of function words in a …

The Effect Of Managed And Traditional Care Insurance Plans On Horizontal Inequity In Access To Health Care In The United States, Frank Puffer, Elizabeth Pitney Seidler Nov 2008

The Effect Of Managed And Traditional Care Insurance Plans On Horizontal Inequity In Access To Health Care In The United States, Frank Puffer, Elizabeth Pitney Seidler

Economics Department Working Papers

This study examines income inequity in access to health care in the United States. Given the predominant and growing presence of managed care organizations as a source of medical insurance and care in both the private and public settings, replacing traditional indemnity plans as a lower cost prophylactic alternative, we speculate that the presence of Managed Care Organizations would reduce, if not eliminate, any pro wealthy bias in access to health care for the insured population in the U.S. We rely on previously developed methodology from the EcuityII project, incorporating the health inequity index (HIWV), to estimate income inequity in …

A Global Education Transition: Computer Simulation Of Alternative Paths To Universal Basic Education, Mohammod T. Irfan Nov 2008

A Global Education Transition: Computer Simulation Of Alternative Paths To Universal Basic Education, Mohammod T. Irfan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As an acknowledgment of the critical role of education in realizing other development targets, the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of the United Nations include education in a framework of development targets. The MDG targets for education include achieving universal primary education and gender parities in all levels of education by 2015.

Recent global campaigns have added to the momentum of the rapid progress of educational expansion, which began in roughly the 1960s. Countries with universal or near universal participation and completion in elementary education have started to look beyond primary, towards free and compulsory basic education- education up to lower …

Church Doctrine: Effects On The Self-Worth Of Married Women, Mary Claire Kondro Nov 2008

Church Doctrine: Effects On The Self-Worth Of Married Women, Mary Claire Kondro

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study examines if married women who attend churches that teach patriarchal marriage roles have lower self-esteem than married women who attend churches that teach egalitarianism in marriage. Forty participants from two churches were administered the Contingencies of Self-Worth Survey (Crocker, 2003). Although the difference in self-esteem between the two groups was not found to be statistically significant, this study brought to light several issues that could be better controlled in a large-scale study in the future.

How Lindenwood Students Get To Class: A Study Of Driving Versus Walking, Sara Ohlms Nov 2008

How Lindenwood Students Get To Class: A Study Of Driving Versus Walking, Sara Ohlms

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a lack of parking at Lindenwood University (LU), and if that problem could be solved if more students who currently drive to class would walk instead. Research shows that college students in America are not getting enough exercise, and that walking has many health benefits. Data were collected using a survey with 40 LU students. Data were also collected through observations of the parking lots on campus. The results show that there are always empty parking spots on campus, 67.5% of participants believe that there is not enough parking …
